Review: Gilles Aiken is not short of space in which to express his distinctive ideas about fusing dancefloor minimalism with a global palette. While his more streamlined house and techno fare is generally released under his Edward alias, Desert Sky has carried some of his wilder ideas with stunning results. The first few releases came shrouded in mystery on a self-titled label, but since then Desert Sky has landed on Assemble Music and Baby Ford's iconic PAL SL. Aiken returns to the latter now with a hefty album project that gives Desert Sky the appropriate room to breathe, and Aiken sounds free spirited and expressive through every inch of tumbling percussion, deft handclaps, spooked out textures and more besides. It's a heady trip through dusty samples configured in fresh, invigorating ways, ranking among the strongest artistic statements Aiken has made to date thanks to its worldly inspiration and otherworldly end results.

Review: Aptly setting the scene with some dance-floor absurdity, Komodo comes Running into The Sun for NAAR 015.

Perfectly obtaining the dance-floor ambiance, 'Running into The Sun' produces the visceral beat that gets the party started, with quintessential house stabs channeling the tracks inner balearic heat. Next on the A, Eric Duncan's remix of 'Running into The Sun' funnels the original's heavier elements and pours them into a rattling house shaker. A

On side B, the steady pace of 'Slow Burning' swiftly evaporates with blissful counter melodies that intertwine with arpeggiated synths, sludgy 303s and propulsive drums that create a hypnotic timbre. 'Between Shadows' explores the balearic-beat once more, with opposing guitar melodies vibrating as the soundtrack to this drive-time burnout. Finally, new kids on the block, Latrec add their intrusive Techno remix of 'Slow Burning' to complete the release.

Review: Especial is delighted to welcome Alphonse back to the label for a third EP to again show his deep knowledge of the past to make a future. After the debut dub-breaks-poem of Same For Me and success of his warrior afro-dance Smokey 12", Alphonse made new friends with acclaimed releases for Klasse Wrecks, Hypercolour and Black Orpheus, before here returning like a chosen one with four sun kissed blessings.

Before the fields of Letchlade, hills of Castlemorton or beaches of Skegness had witnessed Alphonse exploring the sounds of many a free party sunrise, summers were misspent travelling the "disco" buses of Europe, tripping the light fantastic from Spook to Amnesia, Disco Piu to Euritimia.

The music, shared experiences and inclusion all led to an acute understanding apparent in his production skills. Ambient dreamscapes, warm bass lines, 808 breaks, 909 kick, piano, flute and horn melodies atop all lift to the heavens. In Moan Up and White Pepper Alphonse takes, reshapes, rebuilds and rewrites to create anew, expanding minds and hearts like never before.

Long stories, short stores, a nod and wink, at its heart Stolen Sunrise is an EP of wonderful expression, a producer peaking, providing a soundtrack to share for those that look to the future horizons with love.

  4. Voice Inside (Craig Richards Authority Clash remix)
Review:
Things I see. Things I hear. Things I say. Things I wish I'd said. Things I do. Things I'm meant to do. Things I wish I'd done. Things I love. Things that make me love. Things that make me smile. Returning to Not An Animal for the 4th time, Ess O Ess create the 'Voice Inside' on NAAR 16.

Instantly tom rolling into a neo-electro commodity, 'Voice Inside' undulates with lustrous vocals that stand as the tracks core. Pads cling to bleeps and guitar chunks that evaporate with alternating delays. 'Voice Inside (French)' adds a sensual linguistic twist, although the elements remain the same, they feel so different. 'Voice Inside (Dub)' completes the A, stripping tones back and chopping the duration to find yet another gorgeous avenue.

On the flip, Backwoods Remix adds to the original atmosphere with a face scrunching bass-line and pulsating 4/4 kicks that embraces the not so distant future. Last but by no means least, the mighty Craig Richards' signature 808s pound on the remix to close the B. Pulling darker tones to pitch shifted vocals, this minimalist beat composition is perfectly suited for vigorous floors.

Review: The latest release on Verdant is brimming with talent, both from the original artists and the remixers. Sirko Muller leads the charge with the enveloping reverb immersion of "Affinity," a stately slice of dub techno if ever we heard one. RV800's "Bmax Hyperbole" version of the track inserts a more forthright groove, transmuting the spacious meditation into heads down dancefloor connection. Jonno & Tommo's "Efficacy" sparks up the B side with a moody strain of deep house loaded with noirish tension and peppered with needlepoint sound design wriggles. Then Havantepe delivers a remix of "Efficacy" that positively flips the script with a melancholic strain of electro that still bangs where it counts.

Review: Alex Arnout returns with a second EP for the Jack's House imprint. His first EP for the label (Confirmation Bias) was the first release on the label and hit the top 10 best sellers within days of release. The Sync Jam EP features 3 distinctly different tracks. 'Sync Jam' (the lead track) is a true winner with an incredibly infectious loop that creeps in quite early into the track, then the baseline drops in and you are instantly hooked and most likely want to play on repeat. It is the kind of track you wish you had made yourself as the arrangement is stella in the way it builds and engages you. This is a true favourite. 'Calling U' is a really quirky rolling number with both dark and bright tones mixed together perfectly to create a deep atmosphere using lots of interesting catchy keys and patterns throughout the arrangement. 'Resurgen' is a beautiful piece with a true quality mature Balearic sound to it. Warm pads and gentle but effective percussion roll continuously throughout. It is a smooth track that travels, creating a certain of peace of mind.

Review: Italian crew Unknown Collective come correct on this latest Purism joint as they drop some seriously bumping deep house heat to get bodies popping with approval. "Nodi" is the consummate A side jam, all exuberant energy and rock solid functionality, just like a DJs best friend should be. "Virgo" is, on the surface, a slinkier affair, but don't be fooled as there's some serious weight in that bassline which will absolutely rock on a proper soundsystem. "Arya" is the dreamier cut on the record - the groove is still solid, but there's a dreamy tone to the pad hovering in the background and the track is sprinkled with all kinds of extra sonic delights to toy with your mind at the hazy end of the dance.

Machines of Loving Grace is aptly named with four stunning tracks we have come to expect from studio maestro Jacksonville. The title track Machines of Loving Grace pulls no punches and takes you on a captivating voyage with its unique blend of vocal lines, chords, bassline, broken beats and percussive sounds. This is followed by Nepune 4; a cosmic spacey hypnotic track with acid lines and a harder 4/4 beat. On side B the track Sebastopol Rd has a gorgeous depth with its warm chords and vocal line over a deep house rhythm that takes you on a mesmerising journey. The EP finishes with a nod to Jacksonville's first EP on the Inner Shift label with Fragment 7, this track has a more ethereal feel with subliminal synthesised pads interweaving over a vibrant dance beat.

This EP for Malin Genie's label finds him exploring further deep cover plains of expression through the medium of experimental house and techno, leading in with the rippling textures and haunting piano refrain of "Spoit." This speedy follow-up for Half Baked Records (under the truncated SIT pseudonym) is rather good, too. Check first A-side "Spectral", a typically epic excursion where warm ambient chords, deep space electronics and glistening electric guitar motifs bob and weave around a chunky analogue bassline and locked-in tech-house drums. B-side opener "Owl Farm" is notably wonkier and weirder, with druggy drums, mind-altering electronics and the trademark glitch-laden shuffle we've come to expect from Romanian electronic music. That vibe is explored further on twisted closing cut "Animation", a particularly alien example of skewed tech-house funk.

There's definitely a whiff of Detroit about opening cut "Can't Be To Paradise," but it's offset by a Mediterranean mellow tint to the dynamic hardware interplay. "Four Eyes" has a spacier feel thanks to a particularly fizzy pad tone and some artful reverb, while "Ind Soul" is a melancholic jam shot through with lingering keys and a bubbling acid line dedicated to Fon. On the B side, "Gem Vmu" lightens the mood with some sprightly piano, and then "Juno Space" takes us out of orbit once more with some gorgeous lead lines that fall like pearl drops around Rico's tasteful grooves.

A glossy yet textured elegance from these guys. Top tip for the Summer.

Review: Dan Piu is the man behind the long running techno label "Moto Music" and also the driving force behind "deepArtSounds". The Alphaville ep is nothing less than a showcase of his signature atmospheric, textured sound that defines his overall production style. Having releases as early as 1997, we're sure you'll enjoy the music from this seasoned veteran of electronic music.
