Review: Up until his death in 2003, Hiroshi Yoshimura spent decades offering up immaculate albums that blurred the boundaries between ambient, new age and minimalism. For those not versed in the Japanese ambient pioneer's vast catalogue, 1986's "Green" - which is here reissued by Light In The Attic - remains one of his most impressive works. Created using a minimal number of instruments (mostly synthesizers and electric pianos), the set is as quietly jazzy as it is relaxing. Highlights include the meditative, Terry Riley influenced bliss of "Feel", the pulsing organ stabs and blissful electronics of "Sheep", the garden-ready musical hug that is "Green" and the swelling opener "Creek".

Review: Two years ago, Jon Hassell made more than a few jaws drop with "Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume 1)", the genre-bending trumpeter and composer's first studio album in nine years. On that album, he effortlessly updated his trademark "Fourth World" sound - a decidedly cosmic, impossible-to-pigeonhole mix of traditional, otherworldly, exotic and cutting-edge sounds - for a new era. He takes a similar approach on this "companion album", somehow fusing experimental jazz, disparate global sounds, ambient, electronica and digi-dub in a myriad of thrilling, boundary blurring ways. It's a startling piece of work and one that defiantly rewards repeat listens, but then we expect nothing less from someone of Hassell's skill and standing. Recommended.

Review: Earlier in the year, experienced ambient producers 36 and Zake released two different versions of the same album, "Stasis Sounds for Long Distance Space Travel", with the vinyl and cassette releases featuring totally different mixes. Happily, they've now decided to compile all of these contrasting takes on one limited-edition CD. It's well worth a listen, because in our opinion it's one of the best ambient albums of 2020 to date. The included tracks mix echoing sonic tones, drifting sound effects, drone-style aural textures, slow-burn electronic melodies, swelling, near neo-classical musical movements and the kind of immersive, sustained chords that were once the preserve of the late, great Pete Namlook.

Review: When asked to describe the thinking behind her first album for Ghostly International in one sentence, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith told the label that is was an, "expression of love and appreciation for electricity". There are some deeper and more complex concepts at play, too, but it seems a little unnecessary to list them here; after all, Smith's majestic and mesmerising modular movements can be enjoyed regardless of the admirable inspirations behind them. From start to finish "The Mosaic of Transformation" ripples with ear-catching electronics, unfurling melodic refrains, attractive otherworldly sounds, dreamy layered vocals and emotive, meditative motifs. At times, her synthesizer compositions are almost neo-classical in structure and feel, making the album one of Smith's most widescreen works to date.

Review: According to Rafael Anton Irisarri, his first album for Dais was inspired by a desire to "focus on the personal in order to tell a wider human story" - itself a reversal of his usual more impersonal approach to music-making. Musically the eight-track set also offers a slight stylistic shift, too, with Irisarri's usual ghostly ambient chords, grandiose sound design and heavily processed electronic textures being joined by fractured snippets of choral recordings, similarly fuzzy string songs, and the kind of densely layered and intense sounds that recall the dark weightiness of heavy metal. Throw in a bittersweet and melancholic tone, and you have one of Irisarri's most striking albums to date.

Review: Soon Jon Hassell will release a freshly re-mastered reissue of his groundbreaking debut album, "Vernal Equinox". Before that arrives, there's the small matter of this re-mastered pressing of another classic LP from his expansive discography. "Flash Of The Spirit" was created in collaboration with Farafina, a group of musicians from Burkina Faso whose extensive contributions undoubtedly shaped the outcome. Rich in West African percussion, enlightened horns, alien synthesizer sounds and group vocals, the album is undoubtedly more up-tempo in tone than some of Hassell's "Fourth World" work, despite the presence of a number of sublime ambient cuts. For that reason alone, it's essential listening.

Review: The latest missive from ROHS! offshoot Lontano Series is a first label appearance, and second album in total, from Roberto Galati and Federico Mosconi's collaborative Galatimosconi project. According to the label, Dissolve's six-track suite was recorded as a "stream of consciousness" during a few productive days in the studio. Musically, it's impressively hazy, spaced-out and blissful, with the Italian duo adding a range of attractive, echoing sounds - think gentle guitar passages, slow-burning electronic melodies, picturesque harp sounds and becalmed ambient chords - to densely layered audio collage of droning tones, heavily processed electronics, field recordings and effects-laden noises. It's undoubtedly beautiful, but also surprisingly loud and intense thanks to the copious amounts of delay and reverb involved.

Review: Norwegian ambient legend Geir Jenssen is enjoying a particularly good year. Having earned significant praise for his first new album in many years, Departed Glories, the veteran producer has decided to reissue another sought-after gem from his vast back catalogue. Cirque, which was apparently inspired by the real-life story of a walker who died in the Alaskan wilderness, earned hearty praise on its initial release back in 2000. This two-disc edition not only contains the original album - a typically evocative and atmospheric fusion of glacial ambience and icy soundscapes - but also a new bonus disc. This contains a mixture of enjoyable alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period, all of which are - somewhat unsurprisingly - superb.

Review: Sound scientist Brock Van Wey decided to mix things up during the making of his latest album, the decidedly bittersweet and weary "Ten Times The World Lied". To begin with, he decided to deliver an album without vocals - the first time he's ever done that - before opting to record a track a month, on the tenth day of each, for ten months. Furthermore, each densely layered track was recorded and mixed live. The results are impressive, with Van Wey offering mostly melancholic - but intensely beautiful - collages of layered ambient chords, effects-laden melodic movements and extreme aural textures that fill every invisible nook and cranny of the sound space.

Review: Dusk is the latest collaboration between HSP & PITP artist Low Howl and zake. Venturing away from the blissful and gentle dronescapes both artists have become known for, Dusk introduces a more structured output by inviting subtle rhythmic bass hits at slightly different bpms for each hypnotizing arrangement.

Dusk is yet another contemplative journey that encompasses various field recordings and climatic hiss. Each track unfolds patiently, while becoming more hypnotizing as the bass murmurs and layers of sound become one together.

Review: Given the sheer volume of material made and released by kosmiche and krautrock pioneers Tangerine Dream throughout their career, it's perhaps fitting that this staggeringly epic box contains well over 24 hours of music. It focuses on the synthesizer-wielding German band's pioneering period in the 1970s, combining re-mastered versions of seven studio albums (some with additional 5.1 surround sound mixes by Steven Wilson) with no less than eight discs of previously unreleased material. This includes outtakes, unheard tracks, alternate versions, multiple recordings of legendary live shows and the band's near-mythical "Oedipus Tyrannus" soundtrack - something that will delight fans if Tangerine Dream forums are anything to go by. If that's not enough to set the pulse racing, the box also boasts a heavy hardback book and two Blu-Ray discs.

Review: Niklas Paschburg debuted in style with the moving "Oceanic" album on a !K7 sublabel back in 2018, and now he returns with more of his modern classical orchestrations. Very much in the vein of Frahm, Hopkins and the like, he deftly fuses beautifully composed orchestrations with electronic in subtle but powerful ways. On "Svalbard", the piano is front and centre a lot of the time, which lends the album a defined character. The album moves through a surge of different emotions from the taut (on "Cyan") to the scenic (on "Little Orc"), but Paschburg's deft touch on the keys remains the strongest sender. "Season Shift" is rightly an album centerpiece that tastefully balances occasional flourishes of electronica in amongst the classicisms.

Review: Since the release of 2016's epic Gas retrospective, Box, the pioneering drone ambient producer (real name Wolfgang Voigt) has been surprisingly productive. Rausch is the lauded electronic musician's speedy follow-up to last year's Narkopop, which happened to be his first full-length for over 15 years. As you'd expect, Rausch is superb, with Voigt variously turning cinematic orchestral tracks into hybrid electro-acoustic epics. While some are beat-less and fluid, others are loopy, hypnotic and otherworldly, with the German building tension via subtle rhythm tracks that draw on techno and IDM. The results are near faultless, as Voight once again proves that he's a true master of his ambient art.

Review: Last year, Nils Frahm initiated the "Encores" series: a trilogy of EPs exploring different aspects of his musical world. Here, those sets get gathered together on CD for the very first time. Listened to in sequence, it sees the Berlin-based pianist and composer offer up solo acoustic pieces for piano and harmonium (tracks 1 to 5), before layering up piano, processed field recordings and complimentary instrumentation on a suite of sublime ambient tracks (6 to 9). The final section of the album - originally "Encores 3" - sees him flip the script entirely, working almost exclusively with a combination of modular and analogue synthesizers and electronically processed voices. That the collection hangs together as a coherent album despite these stylistic shifts is testament to Frahm's abilities both as a performer and producer.

Review: Ruins is the 10th LP from Portland artist Grouper, an incredible set that's found it's home on the inimitable and always on- point Kranky label...and yes, it's another fine outing from the voco-noise head. Tracks like "Clearing", however, show another side to Grouper's usual rough edge. There's an element of smoothness to those sombre keys and far-out vocals. It's basically an ambient album with an extra layer of soul in its core - check "Made Of Air" for a seriously trippy set of soundscapes.

Review: Saxophonist and keyboardist Jorja Chalmers has accomplished much over the course of her career - she's toured and recorded extensively with Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music - but debut album "Human Again" marks the first time she's stood centre stage as a solo artist. She has all the ingredients to succeed on her own, though: a bold look, a supportive label in Italians Do It Better and a signature style that's in turns creepy, claustrophobic, cinematic, atmospheric and seductive. More importantly, "Human Again" is superb, offering a synthesizer-powered mix of dark ambient instrumentals, David Lynch style soundtrack pieces, drowsy and clandestine sounding songs and cuts that wrap her distinctive saxophone solos around the most evocative of electronic soundscapes.

Review: Hidden Amongst the Trees and Foothills' was recorded this past spring during what I would describe as a very weird time for me. I was experiencing a constant sense of isolation and feeling disconnected with both myself and others. Playing guitar has been a constant source of peace for me and these are some tracks that came out of this difficult period. Looking back now, I feel like I'm in a different, better place now. I hope this music will bring peace to others just as it has done for me.

Review: Michal Jacaszek's music has always been filmic to varying degrees, but it's only in the last decade that filmmakers have commissioned him to write, record and produce music for their big and small screen projects. His latest album, "Music For Films", riffs on this; while some of it was indeed created with specific cinematic projects in mind, some of it wasn't. Listening through from start to finish, where it comes on like a genuine soundtrack to a melancholic, noir-ish film, it's hard to spot the difference. Combining neo-classical string sounds with field recordings, electro-acoustic textures, ambient style chords and melodies, and nods to music concrete, it's an evocative musical journey that stirs the senses and toys with your emotions. In a word: stunning.

Review: Brian and Roger Eno have their own accomplished legacies in music - Brian as a polymath producer and artist, and Roger as a composer. Now the brothers have pooled their talents into their first collaborative album, Mixing Colours, which has taken shape over a 15 year period. The overall process involved Roger recording piano parts in MIDI to send to his older brother for processing, resulting in a mass of work which they finally whittled down to this exquisite collection. Lovers of both artists will be immensely satisfied, as the fusion of classical piano composition and adventurous ambient electronics merge for an engaging, hypnagogic listening experience.

Review: Any new release from reclusive Norwegian ambient colossus Geir Jennsen is cause for celebration. The Petrified Forest was inspired by a 1936 movie of the same name, the plot of which revolves around a world-weary British writer meeting a fellow idealist in an isolated diner in the middle of the Arizona desert. Jenssen's music has always been cinematic in tone - think widescreen visions with multiple related movements, sitting somewhere between icy loneliness and comforting homeliness - so it's little surprise to find that The Petrified Forest regularly hits the mark. Evocative, atmospheric and quietly melodiousness, it's a mini album chock full of brilliant downtempo electronica.

Review: Steve Hauschildt's profile has been on a steady rise since he moved from his long time home of Kranky to Ghostly International. It was a logical move to partner up with the Ann Arbor label as it encouraged the emotional side of his regal ambient pieces to shine through in line with the sensitive tones of other Ghostly alumni (Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, for example). On his second album for the label, Hauschildt sounds more moving than ever, his winsome compositions reaching towards bigger spaces especially on rhythmically charged tracks like "Subtractive Skies". This is no drastic departure from his established identity, but rather a considered evolution towards a new space in which his muse can reside.

Review: Despite having a name that sounds like a Scandinavian conductor, Petr Aleksander is actually the combined efforts of Eliot James and Tom Hobden, two musicians who met while working on Noah and the Whale's debut album, and combine for this project that comes with very strict rules - create more considered, precise music by limiting instruments to piano and strings, but refuse to sacrifice raw emotion. This record sees that philosophy applied to 'This Is Not A Safe Place', the beloved sixth album from Ride, an outfit that have penned some of the most important shoegaze tracks of all time. Accomplished ingredients, the result of this cross-pollination is a stunning and subtle slice of intelligent pop music, rooted in modern classical, complete with ambient touches, but strikingly playful and easily saleable. A unique and highly polished addition to the list.
