Review: Having touched on all manner of post-punk gems in the past, Soul Jazz have now turned their attention to the development of underground punk in the United States. The period covered by Punk 45 - from 1973 until 1980 - spans the seven years where fuzzy heavy rock morphed into punk, before hitting the mainstream. As such, it provides a fascinating history. While punk enthusiasts may have heard have some of the names present (scene stalwarts Pere Ubu and Deadbeats being the headline-grabbing inclusions), the tracklist reads like a who's who of obscure early American punk. Musically, it's great, too, providing a mix of anger, attitude and genre-defining swagger.
