Review: The Get Darker crew are back with their second instalment of This Is Dubstep. Featuring 40 of the biggest tracks and artists on the scene, this is the most comprehensive collection of dark dubs out there.

This Is Dubstep Vol 1 has gone on to become the biggest selling dubstep compilation of its kind, prompting Get Darker to follow up with a sequel whilst the iron is hot. This time though, they take the series to the next level by showcasing more angles of the dubstep scene. Throughout the 40 tracks, the compilation journeys through a multitude of moods, tempos and influence whilst maintaining a healthy balance between rave tracks and songs more geared towards listening at home. It is an all encompassing snapshot of the scene, showcasing the artists at its forefront and its biggest anthems including upfront tracks, unreleased gems and classic anthems.

We see ragga influence on Caspa & The Others' remix of Breakage, delicate bass structures on Skream's "Memories Of 3rd Base" and the slower dubs of Benga's "Eye Tunes." Benny Page & Zero G deliver psychedelic bass twists, we get some tribal action from Ruckspin & Planas, some rolling future bass from Hatcha and even some blissed out, spacey dubstep courtesy of Ironika. The true rave smashes come from the likes of Chase & Status, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Sub Focus, Nero and Caspa.

Featuring all the most important names and touching on all the sounds that are making the biggest waves in the scene at the minute, this compilation is like an audio time capsule of dubstep in 2010. Get stuck into this double CD package to become part of it now.

People Get Ready (vox)
People Get Ready (dub)
Review: Romanian powerhouse All Inn returns to its intermittent Limited series for another pair of anonymous edits that pile the hooks on with a deft touch to create a fiery atmosphere in the context of the stripped down house scene the label operates in. Billed as a tribute to Eva Cassidy and Curtis Mayfield, "People Get Ready" takes a deadly piano loop and works the respective vocals with the skill required to make an edit stand on its own two feet. The dub mix on the flip homes in on the melodic loops for a more heads-down end result, but whichever side you pick the results are likely to be rapturous in the kind of parties that last for two days or more.

Review: No one makes house music as steamy and rapturous as Floorplan aka Detroit's Robert Hood and his daughter Lyric. And there are few better labels for it than Classic, who now serve up this superb three tracker. 'Get My Mansion Ready' is family in structure - chunky but simple drums with a sermon-style vocal over the top and warm organ chords. 'Out Of Control' gets a little more loose with clattering hits broken bass loops, but still a church-like vocal. To finish off, Hood serves up a dub of 'Get My Mansion Ready' that has more turbocharged chords and even more uplifting energy.

Do Your Funky Strut (2:51)
Review: From the late nineties onwards, the Tito Lopez Combo has been serving up their fresh take on funk across six albums and a bunch of EPs. Now they serve up a brand new and red hot 7" for Swiss label Burning Sole. 'Get Ready Everybody' features Mel Superbad Day and has hard horn, taught guitars and fluttering flutes bringing the soul way up top over the tight rhythm section. Flip it over and you will get the more loose limbed groove of 'Do Your Funky Strut' with its suggestive horns and elastic bass lines.

Get Ready (Ben Liebrand Classic Groove) (6:36)
Review: The SOS band is one of disco's most loved outfits. They always bring plenty of funk and soul to their work and have a signature sound that is feel good and sultry. This time their latest comeback single 'Just Get Ready' gets a fresh lick from legendary remixer Ben Liebrand. His opening funk groove version is all glossy vocals, rich chords and nice fat bass riffs. Michael Grey then offers an even brighter, more optimistic version before Liebrand then closes out with a Classic Groove. It's slowed right down, has brilliantly old school 80s production and a killer b-line.

Get Ready Now

Pleasure & Pain
Fiction Dancer
Review: Taken from Rinocerose's "Schizophrenia" album which never saw a vinyl release, this Plant offering features four rocking joints with "Get Ready Now" kicking it all off. The track features Nuutti from NYC synth rockers Dead Combo (Output) and a punky aggressive attitude which will go over big time with fans of the Rapture, Boyz Noise and Midnight Mike. Next up is a joint production from Rinocerose and Shakedown which features Dominique from The Glass on vocals, more rocking dance/rock hybrid action with grinding bass, funky and aggressive guitars and Dominique's oh so catchy vocals. On the flip is "Pleasure & Pain" has a wicked New Order meets Marathon Man vibe with a slick backing breakbeat and vocals coming from Ride's Mark Gardener. Rounding off the EP is "Fiction Dancer" a track that borrows some AC/DC guitar riffs and features Florian Brinker on vocals.

Review: While lots has been written about the influence of Black American soul and R&B artists on Britain's most successful (white) bands of the 1960s, little focus has previously fallen on the music of black Britons - and others from elsewhere in the Commonwealth who called the UK home - during the same period. Gotta Get A Good Thing, which tells the story of black music in Britain in the "swinging sixties", is therefore long overdue. Musically, it skips through soul, rhythm & blues, ska, rocksteady and more besides, offering up tracks from both well-known names and overlooked artists. Throw in extensive liner notes - including an introductory essay from Fitzroy Facey of the Soul Survivors - and you have a genuinely essential compilation.

Review: What could happen when Miss Jale, (a make up artist and stylist, in NYC for fashion week), and Sven Schoene, (a recording artist for renowned labels such as Mouse T's Peppermint Jam, Ralf Gums GoGo label, and the Berlins Komfort Musik label) just happen to meet each other at a New York City airport while waiting in the departure lounge to catch their flights home to Europe? Especially when it comes out in conversation that she is a singer as well, and he just happens to have an albums worth of really fine music that seems to be lacking that finishing touch that could elevate it from good to great! What happens is a project called "Jester" and their debut 10 track long player, a release which takes us on a journey through lounge, jazz, and easy listening soundscapes, whilst incorporating soul, rap, and jazz-funk with just a touch of electronic dub. Variety is defiantly the spice of life as portrayed in this release, especially when each ingredient is used just at the right moment, just the right amount.

Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: Since the early 90s, Ministry of Sound's yearly Annual compilations have done an excellent job in chronicling crossover dance hits, mainstream dancefloor killers, and popular underground workouts that make their way into the wider public consciousness. This year's edition (confusingly dated 2024, despite being released in late 2023) continues the successful franchise via two unmixed discs of radio-friendly dance favourites. It naturally ticks all of the usual boxes, contrasting breakout big room hits by underground heroes (Young Marco, Adelphi Music Factory, Ewan McVicar) and sizable tracks from established dance heavyweights (Chemical Brothers, Sub Focus and Dimensions, Rudimental, MK), with gigantic EDM works (Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding) and the odd out and out dance-pop hit (Kylie Minogue).

The genre innovator has the smoothest of smooth voices and shows that again on Sings Rock & Soul, which is actually heavy on the soul and light on the rock. This limited edition reissue on Studio 1 sounds superb and all of the 12 tracks are gorgeous things with unhurried reggae rhythms and his soaring vocals backed by sympathetic guitar riffs and neat chords.

Review: In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the US army held a 'battle of the bands' contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East Of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Funkadelic. The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, and the devouring drums...

Review: Unknown Label presents 'Ladies First'. Look who's the ladies man. Straight from the Stones Throw tour, this special mix is the newest from Peanut Butter Wolf, giving it up to the flyest girls of hip hop. Hold any scoffing, this is not a novelty my dudes. If you were expecting Salt n' Pepa Queen Latifah remixes, you should slap yourself, this is the Wolf fool. He's only the label head and his mixtapes have always been impeccable. There's over 30 of the baddest female MC's you've never heard. Not only that, the beats are banging. Every style from sick early 90's hip hop, hip house, and bass-a-delic Miami tracks.

Review: Cafu is a new promising talent from Lucerne, Switzerland. He started his musical career at young age with playing trumpet and drums. He then started to play in bands which differed in style - from funky-blues rock to hard metal - and he took lessons in a jazz school. In 1997 he got in touch with electronic music and started DJing trance and psy-trance. In 2002 he decided to produce his own music. Since then progressive trance got more and more important for him and this style became his main focus. "Wake Up" is his first full length album.

The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, and the devouring drums. This is an excellent album out on Wax Poetics.

Review: Re-release of Virus Syndicate's genre-defining 2005 Manchester grime album featuring 4 new tracks: the new MTV/Radio 1 played single 'Ready To Learn', 'Major List MCs' (featuring Roll Deep's Trim, Fallacy and Neckle crew's, Jammer and Ears), and two new exclusives: 'Gun Talk' and 'Catch 22'. Also features the MTV base played single 'Slow Down', and great new artwork to boot. Virus Syndicate are DJ/producer Mrk 1 (formerly Mark One) and MCs Goldfinger, JSD and Nika D - Manchester's foremost grime crew, representing the North-West UK scene in their inimitable style. Virus are an integral part of the Grime scene having played numerous Sidewinder raves and countless shows on Rinse FM and Manchester's Unity, as well as radio support from Cameo, Semtex, Mary Anne Hobbs & Ras Kwame. Their debut album 'The Work Related Illness' is everything you could ask for; a cartoon gangsta movie of an album with a beginning, middle and end, and all the tracks linking into each other in a narrative. The entire album tells a story in the life of the Virus Syndicate! The MC's delivery and Mrk 1's fantastic production may be straight from the Grime scene, but the content reveals a far wider influence - from both UK and stateside hip hop's lyricism. We see this album's heritage in a long line of Mancunian acts, from Ruthless Rap Assassins and Krispy 3 to Happy Mondays' gang-like mentality and A Guy Called Gerald's ravey stripped down production. They also let their northern accents and colloquialisms proudly sit centre stage.

Review: It's been a minute but the Underdog finally bites back with 2 Norman Harris produced warehouse classics: 'Are You Ready For This?' & 'Get On Down' that were hammered by both Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy in their day. Neither of these classic cuts were ever released on 12" and both as rare as ****!

Trescem - "Turn On The Music" (One More Tuuuune! re-edit)
Review: It's hard to imagine what minimal techno artists like Gary Beck and Spain's Paco Osuna are doing on a Defected compilation. However, Beck's contributions display none of his usual white knuckle fury, and the rolling grooves of "Hands in Mine" and "Get Down" are full of seductive vocals and filters. The same can be said of Osuna's collaboration with Daniel Sanchez, a deep, summery groove propelled by a sexy filter. There are darker moments on this compilation, like Riva Starr's own bleepy, analogue version of Cajmere's "Percolator", but in the main, it focuses on the style favoured by Osuna, Beck and the ivory tinkling, jazzy nuanced tracks from Guti & Dubshape, Santos and Deniz Kurtel.

Review: Two years after Congo Natty announced the jungle revolution on Big Dada, he's back with yet another paradigm shifting selection. Effectively this is a remix album but the artists have been hand-picked to ensure the same consistency and complete finish as the original. Dub maestros old and new lay down some serious twists; Sukh Knight fires up "Get Ready" with bellowing synths, Jinx In Dub adds an obese bulbous digidub version of "Nu Beginningz" while the hugely influential UK pioneer Adrian Sherwood unleashes his inner ragamuffin with the skank-happy junglist "UK Allstars In Dub" shakedown. Another smooth and explorative session, the revolution will be dubwised.

Review: London's Horse Meat Disco club really has beaten all comers in the -disco stakes: if a decade of packed parties, international DJ gigs and bringing the disco sleaze to Rinse FM isn't enough, they now deliver their fourth(!) compilation for Strut Records. James Hillard, Jim Stanton, Luke Howard and Severino all share the selection of a 16-strong tracklist, which also appears in mixed form too. Highlights include the quirky Chaka Khan-esque "Ain't No Way" by Opal, the sumptuous luxury vibes of "Stop" by Valery Allington and the legendary low-slung bass-fest "Barah" by Cleavage. Full marks again, how do they do it?!
