Review: The Get Darker crew are back with their second instalment of This Is Dubstep. Featuring 40 of the biggest tracks and artists on the scene, this is the most comprehensive collection of dark dubs out there.
This Is Dubstep Vol 1 has gone on to become the biggest selling dubstep compilation of its kind, prompting Get Darker to follow up with a sequel whilst the iron is hot. This time though, they take the series to the next level by showcasing more angles of the dubstep scene. Throughout the 40 tracks, the compilation journeys through a multitude of moods, tempos and influence whilst maintaining a healthy balance between rave tracks and songs more geared towards listening at home. It is an all encompassing snapshot of the scene, showcasing the artists at its forefront and its biggest anthems including upfront tracks, unreleased gems and classic anthems.
We see ragga influence on Caspa & The Others' remix of Breakage, delicate bass structures on Skream's "Memories Of 3rd Base" and the slower dubs of Benga's "Eye Tunes." Benny Page & Zero G deliver psychedelic bass twists, we get some tribal action from Ruckspin & Planas, some rolling future bass from Hatcha and even some blissed out, spacey dubstep courtesy of Ironika. Review: Jerker Kluge and Florian Reidl's Hi Fly Orchestra first popped up in 2005, and ever since has quietly impressed with its breezy, occasionally summery takes on classic, swingtime-era jazz (and, on occasions, Latin jazz). This third full-length, their first since 2008, continues their explorations into Blue Note-inspired territory. There's enough variety to impress - contrast the sun-bright samba of "Sambinha" and baggy big band soul of "I Got Hop" with the intricate flutes of "Forro" and fluid "How Beautiful" - while the playing is, naturally, impeccable throughout. It's got an old-fashioned feel, all right, but that's the point; this is the sort of thing that will transport you back to a bygone age of jazz.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Review: James Taylor Quartet have been doing their thing since the late 80s, spanning styles but always anchored by a heavy groove and Taylor's keys and Hammond organ lines. The sound on this latest album, recorded at Abbey Road in October 2019, is full-bodied and joyous, especially on "Who's Gonna Break The News?" featuring vocals from Natalie Williams. Some of the Quartet's beloved cop show themes can be heard in the dramatic brass stabs, while there's plenty of funk and disco spilling out of the rhythm section. Spotless production and polished playing make this an immensely satisfying listening experience all round - another sure shot from James Taylor and crew!
