Review: American singer Eva Cassidy released Nighbird posthumously in November 2015. It came 19 years after her death and was recorded at the Washington club Plus Alley in 1996. Some of the tunes had already been released as part of a live album the same year but for this album the recordings have been remixed and remastered from the original tape. It has some big jazz standards such as 'It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)' and 'Fever' as well as eight tunes that were previously unheard at the time. An exceptional record from one of the best female jazz singers of all-time.

It is a super special package on 180-gram, half-speed vinyl across four different slabs. There is also a a 45rpm 12-inch vinyl EP as well as a large 105-page book in its own tasty die-cut slipcase. There are 57 tracks in all, all of which are in new stern mix format thanks to some great work by Giles Martin and Sam Okell. In this instance, though, its' use is both fitting and necessary; Traxbox is, for want of a better word, the definitive story of Trax Records, Chicago house's most influential label in that key period between 1985 and 1990. Across 16 CDs (yes, you read that correctly) and an authoritative 100-page booklet, it tells the (almost) complete story of the label that did more than any other to popularize jack tracks and acid house. All the familiar favourites are present, alongside plenty of overlooked gems (see Dallis' "Rock Steady", Two of a Kind's low-down "Somewhere in West Hell" and Phuture's hissing, lesser-known masterpiece "Spank-Spank").

It is a long awaited, much talked about, often delayed 50th anniversary edition of the Liverpool band's Let It Be album. It is a super special package on 180-gram, half-speed vinyl across four different slabs. There is also a a 45rpm 12-inch vinyl EP as well as a large 105-page book in its own tasty die-cut slipcase. There are 57 tracks in all, all of which are in new stern mix format thanks to some great work by Giles Martin and Sam Okell. What else is there to say other than make suer you cop this true collector's masterpiece?

Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. Review: There's no doubt that The Odyssey was a labour of love for its' creator, former Northern Soul DJ and current Harmless Records boss Ian Dewhirst. His aim was simple: to put together the single most authoritative and expansive retrospective of that most British of underground dance cultures. Fittingly, he's more than succeeded; the 175-track, eight-CD collection boasts not only a wealth of popular "Northern" hits, but also plenty of sought-after obscurities. As if that wasn't enough to get the juices flowing, the box set also features two DVDs - an excellent documentary about the scene, and extensive interviews with key scene players - plus a 160-page book containing excerpts from Mike Ritson's definitive Northern Soul book, "The In Crowd". In other words, it's superb.
