Review: Last year saw Cultures of Soul, American crate diggers extraordinaire, serve up a fine compilation of Caribbean disco, soul, and boogie in the shape of Tropical Disco Hustle. Clearly they were only getting started as a year later we find a second installment from Cultures of Soul which broadens the remit to take in the flavours of St. Lucia and Guadeloupe too. Trinidad & Tobago calypso act Wild Fire feature prominently, providing three tracks of which the Moog laden "Try Making Love" is a compilation highlight. "Music Makes The World Go Round" by The Hamilton Brothers being another, a delicious horn laden, rasping disco bumper that DJs will find a lot of mileage in. A fine compilation.

Review: A themed release with a curious concept, the Yacht Soul series collects specific songs by r&b and soul artists mining the songbooks of their white contemporaries for cover versions, that serve the dual purposes of potentially garnering crossover radio airplay, as well as introducing great songs to segments of the listening public who might otherwise miss them. Producing a rather exquisite album of soul slow jams and crisp productions, Volume 2 here charts contributions from Patti Labelle, Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Keni Burke and The Isley Brothers, scouring their lesser-known contributions to the music world, specifically on commission by those pulling the strings of the music industry behind the scenes.

Review: De La Soul is never far away from the conversation about great music but as of late, they have been back in the headlines more than ever as their music finally got added to digital streaming sites. Buhloone Mindstate is a lesser-known but just as good album as the most famous Three Feet High and Rising and was a critical success at the time. The lead single has samples of Michael Jackson's 'I Can't Help It' and Smokey Robinson's 'Quiet Storm', there is a collab with Biz Markie on 'Stone Age' and MC Shortie No Mas appears on many tracks including the particularly standout 'In The Woods'.

Review: This is the original soundtrack for Canadian comedy series The Pentaverate, created by and starring comedian Mike Myers, and whose OST was commissioned for electronic music legends Orbital (brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll). The soundtrack features a brand-spanking 50 new motifs by Orbital, which - through its many Lynchian, hybrid-jazz-synthpop-orchestral twists and turns - reflects the series' story of a secret conspiracy of five individuals, who since the Black Plague of 1347, have been surreptitiously, insidiously working to influence world events.

Review: It has been five long decades since the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving episode first hit US TV screens. Originally aired in 1973, the show proved beyond any doubt that Peanuts was the coolest and most sophisticated cartoon of the day, and that's in no small part down to the original scores, which were the responsibility of Vince Guaraldi, and all of which are worth picking up if you see copies on sale.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving has never been available on record before, having only recently been rediscovered in the vaults and then primed for this autumn 2023 debut. Remixed and remastered to elevate some of the details that had been lost in the old recordings, tracks run between lounge jazz and soul funk, with 'Little Birdie' arguably the pick of the lot (and not just because it stands out with those iconic vocals).

Review: If you've been paying attention then Augustus Muller will be familiar thanks to the wonders of Boy Harsher. Here casting off the expectations that live act create to focus instead on a debut solo feature film score, those who really have been studying will also know this is actually his third soundtrack following music created for two experimental porn movies a little earlier. Focusing on My Animal, the flick itself is a genre (and mind-)bending romantic horror about a woman tormented by a family curse. Sonically, this translates as tracks which at once play out like an homage to the glory days of atmospheric synth sounds made for movies, from Phantasm to Assault On Precinct 13, while also feeling genuinely fresh and innovative. Suspense by the background refrain and curious key-load, you can listen to it with or without the visuals and still feel immersed.
