Review: Italo-Disco, (at times abbreviated as Italo) is a music genre which originated in Italy and was mainly produced from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. The origin strongly tied to marketing efforts of the ZYX record label, which began licensing and marketing the music outside Italy in 1982. The genre faded in the early 1990s.
Italo disco evolved from the then-current dance music (including hi-NRG) and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employs drum machines, synthesizers, occasionally vocoders and usually sung in English.
This compilation contains some of the long lost tracks of the genre restored for the first time on CD. Vivien Vee "Remember" and Capricorn "I Need Love," are early work by Italian pioneer Claudio Simonetti (Goblin). All tracks digitally remastered along with its booklet, the original artwork and the original recording and extended versions.

Review: Emotional Rescue label boss Stuart Leath is particularly excited about this release, and it's not hard to see why. While Spanish singer/songwriter Javier Bergia is not widely known in the UK, his releases - either solo, or as part of the Finas Africae and Arium Musicae groups - are held in high regard by those of a Balearic persuasion. Eclipse is something of a treat, gathering together the best of Bergia's solo work from 1985 to the present day. Featuring Bergia's spoken and sung vocals atop a mix of gentle acoustics, atmospheric strings, delay-laden percussion and subtle global rhythms, Eclipse impresses from start to finish. It should be essential listening for anyone with even the tiniest interest in Balearica.

Having clocked up eight releases on Street Tracks, it's the ideal time to throw down a milestone and document the sound of the label in one package and W&O Street Tracks does so with panache. The result of Waze & Oddyssey's plunge into their address book is a 12 track compilation that neatly reflects modern house music. Ejeca, Citizen and W&O themselves sit alongside newcomers like Mediman and Sage Caswell while the emergent talents of New Jack City and Eliphino make for a nicely profiled piece of work

Review: San Francisco-based DJ/producer Nick Monaco has long been part of the Soul Clap family, releasing his first 12" on the label back in 2012. Mating Call, a double 12" set running at album length, is easily his most expansive release yet. It's typically eccentric, delivering a range of songs - featuring his own distinctive vocals - that blend numerous styles whilst retaining a loose, funky and altogether rather kaleidoscopic feel. It's rooted in Balearic pop, but also touches on dub, deep house, boogie, dub disco and a strangely deep and contemporary take on the triple-beat rhythms of glam rock. It's hard to accurately describe, but is really rather good; certainly, it's one of Soul Clap's strongest releases of recent times.

Interestingly, Keep Up Appearances is an altogether warmer, melodious and more evocative set than you'd perhaps expect, with a smattering of rich downtempo cuts joining a solid selection of dancefloor-friendly deep house. You can hear a classic dub techno influence in cuts such as "Keep Up Appearances" and "Shadow Theory", while the acid-flecked, soul-soaked "Make It True" sounds like classic Osunlade. Best of all, though, are the more forthright efforts, with the ragged "Seraphim" standing out.

Review: Remote working is not new - artists have collaborated by exchanging files since Internet connection speeds allowed it - but few have pursued it more enthusiastically than Sons of the Sun, a duo made up of South East London beat-maker/multi-instrumentalist Maverick Quest and Texas-based singer and rapper JTronius. The duo initially met online and decided to spark up a Transatlantic collaboration. The results, as showcased on this fine debut album, are rarely less than inspired. Casually joining the dots between future soul, synth-powered P-funk, Afrobeat, jazz and hip-hop, it's a set that oozes musical quality from start to finish. At times it sounds a little like Plantlife or Thundercat, at other times like a hip-hop head's take on 21st century London jazz; throughout, you'll be royally entertained.

Review: Alex Green and Damon Kirkham's debut album has been a long time coming. It follows an action-packed decade that's seen them morph from drum & bass punishers to dubstep fusionists and, more recently, bass music experimentalists. With such experience behind them, it's perhaps no surprise that Resolution 653 is an eclectic set. What's more surprising is the expansiveness of their approach. Within the album's 13 tracks lies glass-clear electronic futurism, brain-warping acid tracks, murky dusbtep, slo-mo 4/4 sweetness, hard edged electro bounce, off-kilter IDM and, naturally, 140 BPM bass bangers. As a summary of where British bass music's at in 2011, it's unsurpassed.

Review: It won't have passed you by that the world's longest running (and most commercially successful) rock band is back. The big news, of course, is that the Rolling Stones have recorded their first album of new material in 18 years, Hackney Diamonds, which will appear in stores and online next month. To whet the appetite of fans old and young, they've served up 'Angry' - a one-track CD single that has been manufactured in relatively limited numbers. To be fair to the old timers, it's genuinely 'prime' Stones fair - all gnarly rhythm and blues riffs and sprawling solos (courtesy of Keith Richards, of course), yelp-along vocals from the effervescent Mick Jagger, and a suitably sturdy rhythm section. A return to form, as many critics have already pointed out.

Review: When Hospital Records launched some 16 years ago, it was primarily to focus on the more soulful side of drum & bass. While London Elektricity's imprint is now about so much more than that, many of its' releases still bristle with an expansive soulfulness. This mixed, mid-price, two-disc affair pays tribute to the label's soulful side, delivering sinewy, string-laden gems, vocal anthems, and liquid D&B classics from the likes of SPY, High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Phuturistix and, of course, London Elektricity. Who mixed it isn't revealed, but they've done a great job; both discs ripple with melody, emotion and, of course, skittering dancefloor rhythms. This is Fast Soul Music, after all.

Review: Roisin Murphy seems to be getting more prolific with age. It's less than a year since the release of the critically acclaimed off-pop thriller Hairless Toys, and the Irish artist and former Moloko singer is ready to release the follow-up. Where its predecessor was bold, brassy and cheery, Take Her Up To Monto is an altogether more atmospheric affair, arguably closer in feel to her work with Moloko during the late '90s and early 2000s. Musically intriguing and largely downtempo in tone, it sees Murphy taking her left-of-centre take on pop in eccentric and evocative new directions. Even the album's most obviously upbeat moments - such as the cheery "Romantic Comedy" - feature musical backdrops that bristle with leftfield ideas and fuzzy, off-kilter electronics.

Review: Past Inside The Present is at it again, and by 'it' we mean both releasing great music and also doing so on unusual formats. This new single 'Cadere' is taken from Dawn Chorus and the Infallible Sea's forthcoming long-player, which will arrive in the Spring of next year, and it comes on a rather unusual glass-mastered 3" mini-CD which includes a download link and code. It's a lush and widescreen ambient single detailed with subtly uplifting chords coated in lo-fi hiss and hum. Also included is a live version of 'Alpha' which in its original form was on a previous album of the same name. It's from James Bernard and Kevin Sery and was recorded live at the Gothic Chapel in Indianapolis so has a decidedly spiritual edge.

Review: Album number six from the Ruffians certainly means business. Honest and painfully on-point in terms of overarching themes, its sonically highly polished and - while not a concept record - incredibly well conceived as a coherent whole. A rock 'n' roll offering that grabs your body to make it move while boring into your mind and soul to make you think and feel. Word on the street is this was some three years in the making, and it certainly feels like an un-rushed process will have led to this package. Tracks kick and punch in all the right places, but they never forget the need for balance, peaks and troughs. It's more than likely that you'll walk away from this with the scale of the anthems cemented to the mind, though, rather than the more tender moments. After all, it's a masterclass in major key melodies, and a striking example of the powerful effect those have on listeners.

Oscar-winning Broadway megastar Lin-Manuel Miranda is one of the standouts in an album full of wild different and expressive sounds. This is certainly a collaborative free-for-all that is well worth hearing.

Review: Put it down to geographical isolation or simply a more vivid imagination that most, but this Russian troupe had already set their stall out as an outfit fit to take shoegaze and dreampop paradigms and reinvent them in innovative and startlingly luminous style. Review: The 21st Century has been quiet thus far for New Order, with only two full albums to date, and only an out-takes compilation in the last decade. Moreover, 'Music Complete' marks their first album to date without founding bassist Peter Hook, and the return of Gillian Gilbert to the ranks. Yet from this turbulence and inertia they've somehow managed to create a collection of songs that rank as their strongest set since 'Technique' in 1989. Review: Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, the Compton-based rapper's first album since 2012's major label debut, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, has been receiving rave reviews. In truth, it's not hard to see why. Imaginative, soulful, and blessed with the looseness of live performance (a result of the use of jazz-minded live players as much as anything else), it sounds like the kind of album that may one day be hailed as a hip-hop classic. Sure, there are big name guests - Dre, Snoop, George Clinton and Thundercat included - but the focus remains on Lamar's distinctive flow and almost cinematic tales of life on L.A's streets. Given the quality of his lyrics, that's no bad thing.

Review: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - was there ever a group who created such a phenomenon and fell apart so soon afterwards? The seismic shockwave created by 'Relax' resounds eternally through pop culture, from the provocative video to the throbbing proto house production. Alas, the success dissolved the band before they could build on their undeniable talent, but there's still a rich trove of classic songs and more than enough alternative mixes to fill out this definitive three-disc collection. Review: Those who still pay attention to the music press may have noticed a fair bit of chatter about post-punk outfit Yard Act's debut album, The Overload, which one esteemed organ described as being "wonderfully wacky". That arguably does the album a disservice - "wacky" has negative connotations to some - but it is certainly a fun, freewheeling affair, whose tongue-in-cheek lyrics are frequently rip-roaringly funny. Sitting somewhere between vintage post-punk, Idles, Sleaford Mods and the Arctic Monkeys (the Leeds' band's vocals are often heavily accented), it's a riotous mix of gnarled guitar riffs, bombastic bass, shout-along choruses, drum machine beats and surprise nods to disparate musical styles (EG West African rhythms on 'Payday', Juju guitars on 'Land of the Blind') .

Review: If you read any interviews around Elbow's ninth studio album, Guy Garvey's open admissions that this is the Bury, Greater Manchester band's most patient and hushed work to date are unlikely to pass you by. The frontman is clearly pleased with what the outfit managed to pull together, offering a great example of why remote working during lockdown actually led to some pretty inspired projects if you look in the right places.

The group themselves are probably still pondering that one. Review: London's krautrock, prog, electronica, free jazz and funk rock fusion specialist returns with his fourth full length for the mighty City Slang! "Depayse" remains fully laced with Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab's subtle Sudanese flair, singing praises and the word of love in "Everyone". The title track sees ambient jazz percussion give a giant runway for a massive guitar solo to take flight while album closer "Mango" delivers something of a West London-Caribbean vibe. In between is an album full of dips and climbs through the hill tops of a sunny afternoon somewhere in the feel-good malaise of Sinkane's multi-instrumental talents.

Review: Based in London, UK, but originally hailing from Argentina, Malena Zavala is nothing if not disinterested in picking a style and sticking with it. Following on from her 2018 debut album, 'Aliso', 'La Yarara' again sees her combining some bold and often disparate genres, and playing with language - Spanish and English - to dazzling effect. The result being a record that's devastatingly effective and equally original. 'What If I' is a positive, upbeat and hypnotic pop lullaby. 'Compay' is saturated in a bluesy atmosphere, melding this with downtempo electronica. 'I'm Leaving Home' is a lackadaisical, whispered slice of reflective chill out. The title track is South American exoticism, canned and then opened on record. A huge talent diving deeper into sonic possibilities, and following what sounds good rather than familiar.

Review: With their penchant for off-kilter psychedelic explorations, deep-rooted spiritual jazz excursions and cacophonous, otherworldly workouts, The Comet Is Coming is undoubtedly one of the most groundbreaking and essential jazz combos of recent times. It's for this reason that "Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery" - their first outing on legendary jazz label Impulse - feels like an event release. It is another stunning album, with the inspired trio flitting between sweaty, dancefloor-ready tracks soaked in psychedelic electronics and more melodious, laidback numbers that sail closer to traditional jazz pastures. Throughout, the level of imagination, creativity and uniqueness remains dizzyingly high.

Ora is in fine form throughout, singing confidently (and sometimes passionately) atop backing tracks that offer a 21st century synth-pop take on dance music culture - as has been the fashion for a number of years. It also contains a genuine club anthem in the shape of 'Praising You', an inventive, hands-aloft, festival-friendly banger that makes extensive use of Fatboy Slim big beat classic 'Praise You' (for which he gets a 'featured' credit).

Review: Tony Allen is on record as saying that The Source, his first album on iconic jazz label Blue Note, is the best recording he's made. Given his length of service and vast discography, that's a bold claim. Certainly, it's a fine album, with the legendary drummer and his selected musicians - mostly jazz players from Paris, plus a Cameroonian guitarist and previous Allen collaborator Damon Albarn on one cut - effortlessly blur the boundaries between Afrobeat and the kind of jazz pioneered by Allen's percussion heroes Art Blakey and Max Roach. It's a brilliant hybrid that fits Allen's unique style of drumming like a glove, and there's no doubt that the former Fela Kuti sticks-man is the real star of the show.

Review: As the title suggests, this excellent collection gathers together tracks from three live sessions the Sisters of Mercy recorded at the BBC's Maida Vale studios between 1982 and '84, during the formative years of their lengthy career. The first session, recorded for John Peel in August 1982, contains a quartet of early live favourites, including their popular cover of the Stooges' '1969', while the second - a session for David 'Kid' Jenson' - boasts versions of tracks from the classic goth-rock EP The Reptile House (as well as a surprise Dolly Parton cover). Best of all though are the tracks from their 1984b Peel Session, which were laid to tape around the same time as the Leeds outfit was recording its debut album.

Review: Released back in 20916, Thanya Iyer's debut album Do You Dream was a gleefully hard-to-pigeonhole affair, with the artist's sweet and evocative vocals rising above a surprisingly eclectic, and at points experimental, musical palette. Kind, her belated follow-up, distils this formula further, with the Montreal singer-songwriter variously combining her evocative vocals with elements of lo-fi jazz, experimental pop, sample-based electronica, pastoral folk, stirring harps and strings, intense jazz-rock noise, ghostly ambient and dusty, slack-tuned trip-hop. That it hangs together wonderfully and entertains throughout, despite its disparate musical directions, is testament to Iyer's growing skill as a performer and producer.

Review: Ambient explorer Tapes & Topographies (real name Todd Gauthreaux) tends not to talk too much about his work. Instead, he's content to simply serve up new albums and let the music do the talking. 'Microtones', his latest full-length, is another softly spun, exceedingly immersive affair in which enveloping, dream-like electronic textures, sustained drones and slowly unfurling chords wrap around effects-laden instrumentation (we can identify pedal steel, piano and strings). There are subtle nods to neo-classical, jazz and cinematic soundtracks, but this is grown up, headily emotional, entirely beat-free ambient music of the sort you'll want to get lost in time and again.

Review: Justin Vernon's voice has always been the people's main attraction to Bon Iver, and the fact his pseudonym even exists is certainly no coincidence. As fragile and heartbroken as it is forthright and experienced, when you're wearing a shredded heart on sleeve and confessing to all your deepest insecurities using a pen name can help immensely. Album number four perhaps proves this more than any of its predecessors. While the three previous chapters have all made his thoughts, feelings, insecurities and fears clear, this one takes honesty to new heights. Combining the frail electronics that have gradually slipped their way into his back catalogue with the acoustics of his earliest, rocket-to-fame efforts, it's a culmination of all that's been in the truest sense. Perhaps even more intimate than the breathtakingly personal "For Emma, Forever Ago", "i,i" is a striking work to say the least.

Review: As much as we all love vinyl, it's refreshing to see an artist who still wants to put out their music on CD, which is what we get here from Romare. His latest album Fantasy finds the widely admired artist take something of a new approach to his work. The man born Archie Fairhurst gets nice and abstract with his samples as he also layers in his own vocals and instrumentation. He has said the album was inspired by log walks and watching films doing lockdowns, and it shows. Hints of 70s fantasy cinema also features and his trademark off-kilter electronic rhythms and kinetic grooves also play a big part in making this one another winner.

Review: Given her length of service (her first appearance as a guest vocalist was way back in 1992), it seems extraordinary that The Love Invention is officially Alison Goldfrapp's debut solo album. It's a typically sparkling, colourful and entertaining affair, taking the synth-pop sound that marked out her long collaboration with Will Gregory as Goldfrapp, and injecting it with a big dose of dance-pop energy. It's hardly a radical recalibration of her sound, though the influence of some of her collaborators - most notably co-producer Richard X (who was involved in some of the album's strongest moments) - is certainly evident. Goldfrapp naturally stars throughout, channelling her inner Roisin Murphy, with highlights including the sub-heavy, house-influenced synth-pop strut of 'So Hard So Hot', the vibrant 'The Love Injection' and catchy opener 'Never Stop'.

Review: Mac Demarco has a certain cachet as a happy-go-lucky slacker, with campfire atmosphere to spare and chorus pedals set to stun, somewhat in the manner of a millennial Cat Stevens. Review: Over the last few weeks, Jazzman's ongoing "Holy Grail" reissue series has focused on obscure but in-demand albums from the Fable Records catalogue. The latest to get the deluxe reissue treatment is Steamheat's "Austin Funk", a 1975 set that's notably harder and funkier than the Texan label's usual jazz-funk fare. Review: It's taken a while, but finally Knxwledge has delivered the follow-up to his "official" debut album, 2015's "Hud Dreems". A concept album of sorts - the tall tale behind it being that the beats were created in 1988 by an infant version of our musical hero after he climbed inside an SP-12 sampler and mastered the machine - the set sees Knxwledge sprint through a beat-tape style assortment of short, sweet and often sublime instrumentals that make use of a variety of period samples. Given his track record, it's an impressive album, regardless whether the beats were genuinely made when he was in "Nike diapers" (as the press release amusingly claims) or not.
