Exit Planet Earth: Nitrogen
Exit Planet Earth: Nitrogen (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EPE 03. Rel: 23 Nov 20

  1. Radioactive Man - "One Out" (6:09)
  2. Annie Hall - "Invisible Dust" (5:10)
  3. Sansibar - "Tamagotchi" (7:28)
  4. VC-118A - "Moss" (5:55)
Review: 20/20 Vision continue to celebrate their renewed electro vigour with the third part in the Exit Planet Earth series, once again calling on a crack team of machine funkers to deliver the robo-goods. Radioactive Man is up first with 'One Out', which finds the original Lone Swordsman on impeccable form teasing and testing his rubbery synth flex around a needlepoint groove. Annie Hall follows up in fine style with the dreamy lilt of 'Invisible Dust', while Sansibar locks into something a little dirtier on the dungeon boogie of 'Tamagotchi'. VC-118A's 'Moss' completes the set in a spellbinding fashion, dropping the tempo for something a little more exploratory with plenty of mystical atmospheres and tweaked FX fills marking out an evocative soundscape.

  3. Si Gaita (8:07)
Review: The Botanic Minds stable continue to inject the vague framework of minimal club music with some colour and sass with this excellent EP from Romanian mainstay Sepp. 'Fluturul' is a perfect 10-minute escapade with a seriously funky bassline and dreamy but snappy melodic hooks on top to carry you away in a reverie of sunkissed psychedelia. 'Vulturul' takes things in a deeper direction without losing the panache and personality that made the A side a winner. 'Si Gaita' seals the deal with a sundown delight that weaves together more of those interlocking melodic lines to get bodies shaking in an effortless, day-into-night fashion that spells out a long and fruity session ahead.

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng Records turned ten earlier in the year, so they've decided to mark the occasion by drawing together tracks from the last decade - most previously released, but some unheard - that deftly showcase the label's ear-pleasing mix of psychedelic, Balearic, cosmic and dub disco influences. Highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out insanity of the Idjut Boys vintage remix of 'Golden Chalk' by Mountaineer and Mudd's chugging, acid-fired 'Slow Rave Mix' of Tiago's 'The Source', to the hypnotic pscyh-disco exotica of Ali Kuru's 'Luna' and the hazy Bay Area disco-chug of 40 Thieves 'Backwards Love'. Vinyl copies of the album come shipped with a bonus 10-inch containing cuts from recent label signings Lex (not to be confused with Lexx) and Harvey Couture.

  1. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Like I Fell In Love With You) (feat Vanessa Haynes) (6:25)
  2. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Like I Fell In Love With You) (Disco instrumental) (6:13)
Review: This record is a re-make of a Carmen Amez disco and boogie gem from 1983. The original goes for well over L200 and isn't even that good a pressing. This cover first saw the light of day as a 12" in September that was only acquired by certain DJs. It soon started trading for high prices as people wondered what the hell it was, who it was by, and whether it was a shifty bootleg. That's all resolved now as it gets a proper out with a freshly re-recorded version with strings, horns, bells, whistles and Vanessa Haynes on vocals. It's a lush bit of floor filling heart swelling disco, funk and soul gold with soaring strings to boot.

Review: Celebrity BBQ Sauce may be a new name, but its' members - Gerald Mitchell and Billy Love - have long been members of the extended Underground Resistance family. They're both an established part of the Motor City music community, and their self-titled debut album for Moodymann's Mahogani Music is undeniably rooted in Detroit's ongoing musical story. Effortlessly soulful and musically rich, its' eight killer cuts various touch on Parliament/Funkadelic style P-Funk (the superb title track), up-tempo, slap-bass propelled '80s boogie ('Music is My Hustle'), warming deep house-soul ('Please Don't Fail Me'), beatdown (the sleazy brilliance of the Amp Fiddler-esque 'Formula of Passion'), and inspired fusions of all of the above ('Lifeline').

First up is this Night Magic collection with 2020 mixes of all the classics. It shares a name with the five-month Brooklyn Museum exhibition that premiered on March 13, then shut because of Corona, and is due to re-open sometime soon. Until then, get up and then get down to the soul, funk and disco fusions presented here - they ooze authenticity but all boast crisp modern production.

Review: The irrepressible Gamm label have said that all profits from this release will be handed to charity in Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's honour. It's a super EP of edits by UK legend Ashley Beedle who teams up with his pal Abi Clarke. The opener is a real gem that reworks the buttery tones of Barry White with real sympathy, 'Hold Fast' is then a glossy r&b tinged slow motion disco tune with steamy and sensors vocals and a fine funky bass riff, then closing the show is a classy boogie anthem
'Yes Indeed (Rock Free For Trouble)' from Steve Arrington that dazzles and pleases in equal measure.

Funk/Reissues
  1. De La Smoove: Lesson 1 (4:30)
  2. Hall & Soul (4:24)
Review: Smoove returns to his hip-hop roots via a brilliantly simple but wonderfully crafted tribute to Del La Soul's "daisy age" era and cut-and-paste pioneers Double Dee & Steinski. 'De La Smoove' is a simple idea that has been expertly executed. Subtitled 'Lesson 1', it sees Smoove stitch together snatches of tracks sampled by De La Soul (or more specifically, Prince Paul) on the peerless Three Feet High and Rising album, throwing in all manner of well-known vocal snippets previously used by Steinski and others. He flips the script on B-side 'Hall & Soul', sneakily blending elements of De La Soul classic 'Say No Go' with one of the tracks that it sampled, blue-eyed soul favourite 'I Can't Go For That'.

Review: The amount of ultra-rare, hard to find, essential Northern Soul classics seems to be infinite. Here comes another reissue that aims to right that wrong with an officially licensed pair of tunes from the Phase One Network that has artwork based on the original promo version. 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' is brimming with soul and immediately swells your heart with its elegant strings, graceful piano chords and swirling sense of groove all lifting you off your feet. 'Try To Leave Me If You Can' is a heartbroken slow song to conjure up memories of all the loves you've lost, or maybe never had.

Review: Given that they started their ascent to EDM superstardom over a decade ago and have already released a string of genuine crossover anthems, this debut album from Camelphat is undeniably overdue. So, was it worth waiting for? If you like their brand of festival-friendly dance music hedonism, then you will genuinely love it. The assembled 21 tracks scattered across three action-packed slabs of wax draw influence from many interconnected styles - mostly electro-house, tech-house and techno, but also indie-dance, synth-pop, nu-disco and more bass-heavy flavours - and repackage them as distinctively Camelphat style productions, complete with contributions from numerous collaborators and guest vocalists (Noel Gallagher, Skream, Jake Bugg, Yannis Foals, Jem Cooke and Christoph all feature).

Yet Love & Light, his surprise third full-length, could well be his most sonically stunning set to date. Beginning with the gaseous ambient opaqueness of 'London Island', the set sees him blaze a trail through 1990s style Sabres of Paradise/Sabresonic techno, hazy dub techno, beatless soundscapes and intense drone tones, before switching focus to deep, gentle and melodious mutations of breakbeat, IDM and electronica.

Review: Given their shared musical heritage - both are members of the extended Firecracker Recordings crew - it's perhaps something of a surprise to find that Face The Facts marks the first serious collaboration between Linkwood and Gav 'Fudge Fingaz' Sutherland AKA Other Lands. It's less surprising that the album is really, really good. Touching on warming synth-boogie, head-nodding downtempo jams, mutant beatdown, Balearic beats, sunset-ready soundscapes and warming analogue deep house, the 13-track set is notable for the pair's extensive use of dusty old drum machines, tactile instrumentation (think smooth Rhodes solos, languid guitar solos and blissed-out synths) and Sutherland's hazy, sometimes seductive singing voice.

  1. Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus" (2:57)
  2. Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John" (2:24)
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Review: Had it not been for the cursed pandemic, Davie's 'Testify' - a righteous fusion of neo-soul, gospel and nu-disco - would have been an anthem throughout the many festivals dotted around the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Here the superb original is twisted into even more celebratory new dancefloor shapes across another essential EP. Mousse T sets the tone by turning it into a jazzy, percussive and stomping chunk of disco-house pleasure, before KDA re-imagines it as a thrusting, hard-edged house loop jam that wisely showcases Davie's inspired bassline. Over on the flip, Danny Krivit gets out his scalpel and successfully extends the mid-tempo original, while Alex Dixon pops a pill or two and reworks it into a rushing piano-house special.

Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. It's a real dancer. Things get more impassioned on the high speed funk chase that is Rita Pavone's 'Il Geghege.'

Review: A new record from Malin Genie is always an intriguing proposition, and on this occasion the prolific, chameleonic producer is working in the realm of sharply focused techno with a dubby sensibility at its heart. That's especially true on 'Drek', which does a great job of bringing a fresh texture to the well worn dub techno palette thanks to some canny FX processing. 'Mastodon' is bigger still thanks to its own assortment of pulsing chord tones, and 'The Foolish & The Senseless' brings things into a new realm of expression with some forthright melodies that aren't typically associated with the dub techno tradition. Top shelf stuff as always from this inventive and accomplished producer.

Review: The shadowy Black Rox label out of Brighton returns after two years silence with some more dusty deep house delights that place the Black roots of the music front and centre. That's especially true of A side cut 'This Poem (Roots Unit alternative version)', which reframes the classic Bobby Konders track and the iconic 'Dis Poem' by Mutabaruka. This 2020 update drapes the track in plush swathes of string pads and undulating percussion perfect for mellower moments on and off the floor. Then Roots Unit tackle further aspects of Jamaican music culture with 'Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor Version)', which samples a spread of vocal samples and straps them to a sparse but funky groove.

Review: Taking the term prog and running with it to the nth degree, Danish band Causa Sui present their 6th full length studio album, and 14th outing if you include session and live recordings. Phrases like 'vast tapestry' quickly spring to mind when you're skipping through the running order, although for the sake of avoiding cliches let's stick to the basics - it's as quiet as it is loud, as groove-laden and psychedelic as it is rowdy.

Compare and contrast the star-gazing melodies and atmosphere of 'Honeydew' with the gritty guitar riffs and wails of title track 'Szabodelico', or the constant building energy of 'Vibratone''s cosmic freight train with the smoky, sticky heat and flutes of bluesy 'Laetitia'. It's a long ride through innumerable iterations of rock that invokes images of wild eyed artists immersing themselves in epic soundscapes of their own making.

Review: The Smashing Pumpkins' transformation from melodic alt-rock deities to synth-driven electronic boppers is complete. Well, almost. The titular single certainly fits that easy narrative, laser beam chords and string refrains bursting from behind a track that bounces with a light disco punk energy. In truth, of course, there has always been far more to Bill Corgan et al than the alternative rock tag often implies, and even right back to their formative years the crew were toying with expectations.

2018's Rick Rubin-produced Shine And Oh So Bright... album may have emphasised their rock roots, but now we're given their creative juices in full flow on their poppiest outing yet, partly inspired by the roster of seminal Chicago label Wax Trax!, the US home to Underworld and The KLF among others. Needless to say, though, the Pumpkins make it sound like they've lived here all along; testament to their unwavering dedication to trying new ideas and knack at pulling them off.

It was one of only a few that came under his sporadic Morganistic alias but really sits up there with the best albums of its era. It's linear, straight ahead techno from an interplanetary space that is alive with scurrying sonic motifs and alien life forms, streaming synth lines that leave neon trails in their wake and, on tracks like 'Crimes & Misdemeanours', it has a real trance inducing intensity. The original material has been remastered by the revered Matt Colton at Metropolis which lends it extra heft.

Review: This exclusive Record Store Day 2020 7" pairs two hit singles from Detroit rapper Eminem's highly acclaimed Slim Shady LP in limited quantities. The a-side offers up one of his most iconic singles, one that truly helped establish his confrontational lyrics and loose lipped 8-mile style. It first came in 1999 and garnered Eminem his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Mixing up comedy, horror and hardcore rap, it was produced by Dr Dre and is utterly attention grabbing. Flip it over for another Dre produced join in 'Bad Guys Always Die' (From Wild Wild West Soundtrack).

Review: Here's something to get the juices flowing: a killer, dancefloor-friendly cover version of Barrabas's 1972 funk-rock classic 'Woman' by salsa singer George LaMond, legendary producer Louie Vega, and the latter's expansive Elements of Life band. Vega's EP-leading 'Main Mix' is a richly percussive, 11-minute fusion of Latin disco and funk rock topped off with clipped guitar riffs, heavy organ chords and a killer lead vocal from LaMond. Vega provides numerous remixes himself, including an extra-percussive rhythm track ('Quintero Beats') and a salsa-inspired "Latin Soul Mix" that's almost as essential as the main version. Elsewhere, old pal David Morales provides a breezy salsa house remix and an organ-heavy dub, while Frankie C's "Brazilian Mix" is a carnival-friendly affair that's seriously infectious and life-affirming.

  1. Sirocco (3:17)
  2. Nymphea (3:13)
Review: This year, Russian outfit the Diasonics have delivered a swathe of seven-inch singles, each of which acts as a showcase for their unique "Hussar funk" sound - an "outernational" style blend of deep funk grooves, psych-funk flourishes and melodic refrains that draw on their native Eastern European musical culture. They're at it again on their first Mocambo outing, which opens with the stunning strains of 'Sirocco', where Pierre Henry style synth motifs and decidedly Russian melodies rise above booming bass guitar, crunchy drum grooves and surprisingly creepy jazz guitars. Turn to side B for the slightly bolder and arguably even creepier 'Nymphea', another solid slab of quirky deep funk that should appeal to those who like eccentric 1970s library music and unusual musical mutations.

Review: If you've got even the slightest interest in the cutting edge, synthesizer-heavy Tokyo scene of the 1980s, this killer compilation from Japanese music crate-digger Nick Luscombe and Wewantsounds is simply essential. It features tracks plucked from the vaults of cult labels Nippon Columbia and Better Days, with Luscombe offering up inspired selections that variously touch on deep synth-pop, electro, post-punk experimentation, jazz-funk, ambient and what would now be classic as Balearica. It's such a good collection that we're finding picking highlights difficult, though our current faves include the disco-tinged punk-funk of Juicy Fruits' 'Jenie Gets Angry', the slow-motion jazz-funk of Yumi Murata, Chiko Asamoto's smooth and sensual synth-pop, and the synth-reggae eccentricity of Akira Sakata.

Back in 2008 he dropped this EP and now leading Dutch electro titans Creme Organization's Classics offshoot remasters it and reissues it complete with a bonus joint from DJ K1. 'Electro Muzik' is fierce from the off, with vocoded vocals and squelchy bass ripping up raw analogue drums. 'Interstellar Funk' is pure and perfect body music, with super-funk in the drum and bass combo and smeared sci-fi chords bringing all the feels. 'Alia Life Form' is another dark interplanetary trip then that DJ K1 tune 'Just Don't understand' locks you in a hall of reflective melodies and restless bass.

Review: In recent times Daniel Avery has been busy collaborating with the likes of Alessandro Cortini and Roman Flugel (the latter as Noun), so few expected him to drop a new solo album in 2020. The limited-edition CD also comes bundled with a bonus disc containing the music from Falling Light, a sound and vision installation he created for the 2019 Leeds International Festival.

Review: To celebrate the album's 25th birthday, Bobby Bird has decided to release a freshly re-mastered version of his second studio album as Higher Intelligence Agency, Freefloater. It further distils the saucer-eyed musical template he developed (initially with the assistance of then studio partner Steve Chandra Savale) on 1993 debut Colourform. That means a decidedly intergalactic, frequently psychedelic blend of IDM electronics, mind-mangling TB-303 lines, dub basslines, ambient textures and mutant electro beats. It's considered by many to be an "ambient electro" classic and we'd have to agree. Thanks to Bird's painstaking re-mastering work, it also sounds better than ever.

Review: Drop 6 is the latest in an ongoing mix series that finds British rapper Little Simz flexing her skills over an extended release. It's a fine work that puts her lucid vocal flow front and centre. She muses on meditation, self-reliance and occasionally stores a moment to big up herself. It has an alluring vibe, gloomy in places, empowering in others, and often feels as lonely as lockdown will have been for many. The artist has said before she pushed through something of a crisis to get the record finished and that always shines through, but only to the betterment of the results.

Review: Five tracks from Paul Weller's critically acclaimed 2020 LP On Sunset, with five remixers taking the stems and crafting something new from that original material. And what remixers they are, comprising James Skelly of Liverpool band The Coral (Skeleton Key), Welsh synth-y songwriter Gwenno, Senegalese drummer Seckou Keita, psychedelic folk star Jane Weaver and French indie pop troupe Le SuperHomard.

With that lineup you'd expect the results to be varied, but that's something of an understatement in reality. From the tripped out surrealism of 'Rockets' as read by Weaver, through Keita's pared back percussive take on the same track, the sparse minimalistic harmonies of 'Old Father Thyme' to the sublime and sexy downtempo jazziness of 'More', it's a taster menu right down to the number of dishes.

Review: UK stalwarts Audiojack are real workhorses who have provided a myriad of club-ready weapons for DJs all across the board in recent years. Most of it has come on their own Gruuv label, which is where they return now. They open this latest missive with 'Intimacy (feat Lady Vale)', a slow building tune that awakens from a subtle, deep roller into a rather spiritual cut thanks to the fine vocals. 'Outta Limits' indeed explores the sort of deserted distant planets you'd expect from the title, while 'Neo City Lights' could well be the sound of a future disco found on one such exploration.

Review: Eglo continues to offer up choice reissues of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. The latest to get the treatment is 2011 12" Marilyn, which appeared at a time when Shepherd was just beginning to expand his sound palette following a few years of distinctively-swung deep house singles. The title track still boasts the distinctive, jammed-out synthesizer lead lines that were then a hallmark of his productions, as well as the shuffling house beats that we all love dearly, but also makes use of lots of extra percussion, Motor City-influenced chords and some sweet scat singing. Flipside 'Farukx' is a little more revolutionary, with the Eglo co-founder wrapping jazz-fired broken beats in drowsy chords, twinkling synth sounds and wavy female vocal snippets. Likethe A-side, it's one of Shepherd's best.

Review: German producer Kapote has previously been involved in a number of Toy Tonics compilations, so it's little surprise to find him at the controls on Mushroom House, a rather fine trawl through the more Afro-cosmic and Balearic-influenced ends of the label's vast back catalogue. There's much to set the pulse racing across the set's two slabs of wax, from the rubbery, dubbed-out Afro-house bounce of Ponty Mython's 'Slippin' Into Darkness' and the dusty Afro-disco haziness of Munk's 'Nigerian Jam', to the intergalactic electro trip of the Asphodells' killer remix of 'The Circular Path' by the Deadstock 33s, and the deep space Italo-disco chug of Baldelli's sparkling 'Phobos (2020 Version)'.

This fabric mix is further proof of that, a real boon that will lift your spirits while we continue to be deprived of actual club experiences, and it was all recorded from their cabin in the forest of New Hampshire.

Review: Since they made their debut in 2012, Potatohead People's music has been championed by some serious players in the instrumental hip-hop and downtempo grooves community, most notably Nightmares on Wax, Phife Dawg and Big Boi. Listening to Mellow Fantasy, their third full-length and first in two years, it's easy to see why. From start to finish, the album lives up to the promise of its' title, with the Vancouver-based duo delivering rich and warming cuts that make extensive use of some seriously seductive and jazzy instrumentation. While rooted in hip-hop (there are a number of rap cuts scattered across the set), the album's genius lies in the Canadian twosome's ability to also turn their hand to jazz-funk, broken beat, P-funk flavoured soul, seductive slow jams and decidedly Balearic, synth-heavy soundscapes.

Review: Buckle up for this much hyped debut on Locus from Rising London-based artist Casey Spillman. He is clearly a student of the prime tech house era of the mid-nineties, but also someone with his ear to the contemporary underground house sounds coming from Berlin. 'What I Say' cuts up a nice subtle vocal, then lets it ride over a heavy but undulating beat as the crisp percussion flutters up top. 'Gambling Man' is more freaky for those playful after-hours sessions and 'Humidity Metre' then gets even more wonky, with darting synths keeping you on your toes before the closer 'Commands' is a full on tech workout. Classy stuff.

Review: Two years ago, Z Records gave Colin Curtis - one of the UK's longest-serving DJs, and a pioneer on the Northern Soul and jazz-funk scenes - a chance to dig deep into the crates and showcase some of the music he's used to make jazz dancers spin, shuffle and footwork over the previous 50 years. Here he delivers a sequel, and the good news is that it's also full-to-bursting with Latin jazz, fusion and jazz-dance treats. The plentiful highlights include - but are in no way limited to - the high-octane heaviness and life-affirming piano solos of Marita Alban Juarez Quartet's 'Upa Neguinho', the carnival-ready cheeriness of Steven Kroon's 'Tombo 7/4', the deep jazz-dance soul of 'Brasila' by Raffaela Renzulli Ensemble and 'Manteca', a killer drum workout by Jam Session Goes Latino.

Review: Although instalments are few and far between (the last one dropped eight years ago), Terrence Parker's From The Far Future album series contains some of the Detroit veteran's finest work. The latest volume - Part 3, fact fans - continues this trend, mixing weightless, deep space ambient with a wealth of Afro-futurist techno and tech-house works that make great use of impeccably programmed, loose-limbed rhythms, twisted synth lines, and aural textures that are genuinely cinematic in sound and vision. The plentiful highlights include warehouse-ready club cuts 'Unconditional Love', 'Spectrum of Light' and 'Out of Darkness', and the ambient sprawl of 'Remarkable Wanderer'. Sci-fi techno at its finest.
