Play With Me (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: ATH 080. Rel: 07 Nov 19
Funk/Reissues
  1. Play With Me (4:22)
  2. In Action (4:16)
Review: Athens Of The North hitting us with big fat juicy slap bass feels right here as an ultra-rare joint from Miami's Frank Cornelius and Gary King aka Myth comes our way. "Play With Me" comes live and direct from 1985 and you can tell in every direction. The production is fat and roomy and the boogie flavours are off the Scoville scale. Meanwhile on the B we have the duo's first single "In Action". Equally funky, salubrious and widescreen but with a little more vocal action, it's another boogie triumph from the Scottish reissue kings.

  7. Change (5:49)
  8. TFI (8:03)
Review: Try as he might, Ray Mang can't hide behind an anagram as he drops this, his first LP in 10 years breaking in new imprint Keeps Going. While he's regularly dropping dancefloor gold in the disco-edit sphere, this record gives our man the chance to explore some more expansive sounds without losing that all important sense of groove. Take the dusty deep south boogie of "Revolver" or the shuffling, subliminal jazz funk delights of "Doh!" - these are jams that reach far beyond obvious dancefloor genres but they're rich in groove. As the saying goes, buy the ticket, take the ride and let Any Gram take you somewhere new.

Anna Melara EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LIH 037. Rel: 04 Nov 19
Deep House
  1. Feel Yo (4:09)
  2. Where They're From (4:33)
  3. Want You (5:14)
  4. Get Over (5:26)
Review: German percussionist Kolja Gerstenberg makes no attempt to hide his love for the drums on this razor sharp drop for Lumberjacks In Hell, building on his previous outings on Suol and Smile For A While. The drums are sizzling hot on "Feel Yo", tastefully overdriven and embellished with some MPC-style sample juggling that should satisfy those who like their house tracks hot as Dante's inferno. "Where They're From" is no slouch either, keeping the pressure up with a liberal dose of soul poured in for good measure. The keys and live bass on "Want You" add to the feverish mood, and then "Get Over" sends things spiraling out on a Latin-spiced cosmic journey.

  3. Jo Bisso - "The Mistery With Me" (Glowing Palms edit) (6:52)
  4. Charly Kingson - "Manyaka" (Shan dub) (5:09)
Review: A mixed bag of groove goodies from Africa Seven on their ever-funky edit series. First up is one of Cameroon's funkiest exports, Pasteur Lappe, whose cosmically charged 1979 Disques Esperance release "Na Real Sekele Fo Ya" gets a cheeky re-jig from Shan. Flip for a powerful soul twist from Glowing Palms as they get busy on the bassline and middle eight section of another Disques Esprance artist Jo Bisso. Finally, Shan closes the show with another floor-focused edit, this time of Charly Kingson's "Manyaka". Soulful, strident and jacked up by Shan's new arrangement, this will have your dancefloor swooning from the off.

Disco/Re-Edits
  1. Turkish Delight (7:17)
  2. Disco Boulette (6:36)
  3. Marmaris (7:42)
  4. Berka Beat (5:48)
Review: Gassed up on the most cosmic of eastern sweets, N Gynn got our motors running with this immense four-tracker before the summer. It's been so well received this is the second run and it still sounds just as delicious. Each cut packing bulbous basslines, all polished up with rich mystic sheens, we kick off with the technicolour whirligig that is "Turkish Delight" where things get juicier and juicier the more the bassline cuts through. The same can be said for "Disco Boulette" where the groove takes even more of a cosmic turn. Flip for more rhythm based tracks as "Marmaris" layers up the drum machines amid the dusky textures and "Berka Beat" goes all out acid b-boy. Delightful.

Funky/Club House
  1. The Fantasy (5:46)
  2. No You Don't (6:12)
  3. No Speed Limit (5:54)
  4. Strictly Real (5:50)
Review: Coming from the Constant Black family but distinctly committed to the evergreen sound of disco, Cardiology is a label committed to club music with heart and soul. First up on this label is Earl, who wastes no time in setting the mood with "The Fantasy", a tastefully funked up house joint with French Touch leanings. "No You Don't" brings the disco to the fore even more, but not at the expense of hard-pumping beats and a killer diva lick or two. "No Speed Limit" is tough and pounding, which makes the sliced up samples dig in all the deeper - you could totally imagine DJ Bone juggling this one to death. "Strictly Real" takes things even further with a spaced out breakbeat speckled bumper lavished with gorgeous string shots - a curious blend that works like a dream.

  1. Blame It On The Groove (2:45)
  2. San Francisco (3:41)
Review: Swedish contemporary groovesmiths Pomona Dream return with their first prominent release since their debut album "Rainbow Milk". Coming on strong on the mighty G.A.M.M, "Blame It On The Groove" sits somewhere between deep house and classic disco thanks to some belting strings and handclaps midway. "San Francisco" on the flip takes us deeper into the dance as a fully electronic piece with strutting synths, skippy beats and trippy textures running in parallel with Sandra Bang's smoky vocals. Live the dream.

Disco/Re-Edits
  1. WYBES (9:37)
  2. E (5:08)
  3. Stevie (2:59)
Review: Daniel "Red Rack'em" Berman, has been on a real roll in the last few years. He's found a sweet spot between house and disco that layers up functional loops with party starting samples and is designed to work floors into a frenzy. He does that once more here with the slightly drunken disco stomper of "WYBES" which will have you waving your hands like you just don't care. If the a-side soundtracks a raucous Christmas party, the flip is more heady thanks to the melodic house subtleties of "E" and slowmo funk and squelchy bass of "Stevie".

  9. Desert Wind (4:48)
Review: Destination: Syracuse New York. After five years on the live circuit, Crac's troupe of musicians created their one and only record and self-released it in 1980. Super smooth in its delivery, broad in its style and detailed with rich harmonies, soothing instrumentation and a yacht-meets-rare-groove sense of calm and warmth, it's been a cult release ever since fetching triple figures on auction sites... until now. Sitting somewhere between the classic sounds of the Doobie Brothers and the more contemporary sun-kissed charm of Paqua, there's a timelessness to this that will last another 40 years and beyond.

  3. Se Ritornerai (Vocoder version) (9:37)
Review: Three cosmic disco charmers from Italian stallion Giordani (who you may recognise as one half of Marvin & Guy). "Non Me Lo So Spiegare" is a pulsating piece of instrumental emotive laced with a striking synth riff while the other two tracks let the vocoder take the lead. "Rolandia" paints a lamenting vocal over an insistent arpeggio while "Se Ritornerai" takes us deep into synthwave territory. Pristine synths, emotional vocals and great moments of space, it's an epic finale to an exceptional EP.

  13. Trio Ternura - "A Gira" (3:04)
Review: Compiled by Scottish crate digger Stephen Marshall , Screamers, Bangers and Cosmic Synths was arguably one of 2017's most entertaining and eye-opening compilations. Happily, we can report that this sequel is every bit as good. Highlights come thick and fast from the word go, from the bouncy, Moog-laden reggae-funk of Tecumsay Roberts' "It Makes Me Dance and Sing" and the intoxicating, dub disco-influenced AOR bounce of Geri Baird's "Backside of the Desert", to the percussive voodoo of Enzo Del Re's "Il Banditore" and the low-slung, lo-fi synth-funk oddness of Sunny Boy's delightfully quirky "Love Affair". Oh, and the left-of-central gospel-funk of The Weeden Family Singers' "In The Kingdom of the Lord", which is strangely magnificent. In other words, it's another fine collection of dusty cuts you've never heard of. What's not to like?

  3. Perdu - "Yesterday's Tomorrow" (6:46)
Review: Welcome to the first release on a brand new disco label that kicks off with an EP featuring a remix from Scandi disco king Prins Thomas and fast rising Amsterdam talent Perdu. Thomas goes first, layering in his trademark grooves and joyful synths in a charming remix of Superdiesel's "Ticket Naar De Zon", while Perdu gets old school and afro tinged with his fine mix of organic drums, vocals and synthetic textures on "Tribal Voices" before closing out with "Yesterday's Tomorrow", a darker and more driving disco beat that's built on nice bulky drums.
