Review: You've always been able to hear the West Coast in Monocoastal, but it's particularly present when you shut your eyes after 12 months of lockdown stopping you from visiting the region. Less active L.A., and more observing in Oregon, Fischer's career didn't end with this in 2011 and the multi-disciplinary artist has produced great things since, but the album is certainly one of turning points in terms of reputation and note.
The idea of slowly watching time unfold in un-rushed places is also highly appropriate. Among the washes of tape and the waves of refrain that make up this beautiful, meditative outing, you'll hear takes and half-harmonies from found instruments including a piano and xylophone. Overall, it feels like a place removed from linearity. A liminal masterpiece, if you are that way inclined.

Review: Mitch Wellings is the founder of Space Tours Records and The Sound Kitchen studios and he's been impressing us with his 12"s for a while so we're glad to hear an album from him. This new conceptual release says it was "created to honour the brave passengers on the first ever Space Tours flight." It's a cosmic trip made using "real interview footage" and has some very lovely artwork to help heighten the illusion. The music itself is futurities and melodic tech with wispy electro rhythms and celestial chord sequences. It's an expansive mind movie, a deeply immersive and escapist soundtrack that makes great use of the long-player format while also offering up plenty of great moments for the dance floor. A real triumph.

Review: Swedish band Soul Tune Allstars play authentic sonic soul food and here return for a Viking-themed instrumental soul album with The Soul Of The Viking. No longer a strictly domestic affair, this second LP still hears head man Niclas Wretelid bandlead, and also contains appearances from American singers Carlton J Smith and Maria Sanchez, not to mention razor-sharp guitar work from Mikko Raisanen, and flute and organ contributions from his countrymen Olli and Tommi. More Viking-like in theme than sound, this is a progressively branching, nourishing album.

Review: American rapper Logic announced his retirement from music in 2020, but returned with this surprise release, College Park, in 2023. For all intents, such a stunt might come across as disingenuous, but it makes sense in Logic's case, as the album is more of a personal paean to Logic's complex and difficult childhood. When the moment comes to revisit your past via your art - regardless of whether you ostensibly "quit" beforehand - you take it. Over the course, Logic leads us by the hand into his hometown of College Park, Maryland, where he took the first steps on his hero's journey into the rap biz. Logic's story is thoroughly emotional, and this is certainly his most personal album yet, with tracks like 'Wake Up' and 'Self Medication' exemplifying the artist's newfound maturity and a full-circle return to earthen realness.

Review: Senegalese favourite Baaba Maal is a unique kind of artist, having come up in his local music circuit with a bang, but not easily fitting in with an easily pinnable niche. Review: John Cale's Word For The Dying album was first released in 1989 on the Opel label. It was produced by Brian Eno and is Cale's "heartfelt response to the Anglo-Argentinian War." It takes the form of Cale's favourite Dylan Thomas' poetry set to music and the lyricism and melodic phrasing throughout is truly sympathetic and complementary. The compositional qualities of this album are astounding and make for a resonant listen. This reissue comes via All Saints on limited clear vinyl and a download code is included.
