Review: Despite emerging as a synth-pop outfit, Talk Talk's sound evolved considerably in a short space of time. By 1986, when their third album The Colour of Spring hit record stores, they'd ditched the synth-pop of their debut and the free-jazz-influenced post-rock of its sequel in favour of a more traditional indie sound - albeit one still infused with some electronics and bags of aural invention. The performance captured on this CD (originally recorded for a radio broadcast) dates from 86 and mixes interpretations of tracks from The Colour of the Spring with new takes on earlier singles and classic cuts. Highlights include a rushing version of 'It's My Life', the concert-opening 'Talk Talk' and a decidedly Balearic, harmonica-sporting 'Living In Another World'.

Review: Given their Radiohead connections Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood make up two thirds of the band), there's always been an enormous amount of interest in The Smile - a lockdown-born project that has plenty of potential. Wall of Eyes, the trio's second album, is certainly impressive. For proof, check the moody, suspenseful and slowly unfurling title track (all pulsing, low-slung semi-acoustic grooves, eyes-closed vocals, dense electronic textures and soundtrack strings), the heady, subtly jazz-flecked wall of sound that is 'Friend of a Friend' (listen out for the music concrete-style sound collage sitting in the background of the White Album era Beatles-esque 'Friend of a Friend'), and the lo-fi, string-laden headiness of the largely beat-free 'Bending Heretic', whose cut-glass horror strings and Nine Inch Nails style guitars are impressively intense at times.

Review: Following a couple of years spent re-releasing many of her classic albums, alongside sets featuring demo versions of the same songs, Polly Jean Harvey is finally ready to release a new album - her first for seven long years. Reunited with long-time collaborators John Parish and Flood, Harvey delivers alluring, at times otherworldly songs - delivered beautifully and with more than a hint of world-weary emotions - backed by sparse, effects-laden instrumentation, metronomic grooves and plenty of pastoral, folk-influenced intent. We've not listened to the lyrics intently enough (yet) to adequately discuss their themes, but in advance Harvey's label promised "biblical images and references to Shakespeare" amongst the introspection and hard-worn commentary.

Review: Astonishingly, almost 14 years have passed since the release of Everything But The Girl's previous - and many assumed final - album, 'Temperamental'. Since then, husband-and-wife team Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn have delivered plenty of solo music rooted in deep house, nu-disco and contemporary synth-pop, and it is those sounds - along with nods to their acoustic past - that dominate Fuse, their surprise new album. While the set undoubtedly feels fresh and contemporary, the key ingredients that made their music so alluring - not least Thorn's distinctive, world-weary lead vocals and introspective lyrics - remain front and centre. The results are uniformly impressive, with highlights including the slow-motion, piano-laden r&b-pop of 'Run a Red Light', the sub-heavy, garage-influenced brilliance of 'Nothing Left To Lose' and the glossy IDM-pop shimmer of 'No One Knows We're Dancing'.

Review: The mysterious London-based music collective Sault are in the process of reissuing their latest five albums on vinyl, in full, after they were simultaneously released as a humongous free digital download in late 2022. Among them comes '11', their latest project which was exclusively made available via said password-protected link and was intended as the reddest part of this quintuplet offering to God. Each album cut a distinctive oeuvre, and '11' was undeniably the funkiest, centring on the chops of the collective's in-house producer Inflo. Peak states such as 'Higher' pack raw Rhodes, knife-edge vocals and envy-inducing talents into a cinematic, soul-feeding addition to the mystery stew, while downtimers such as 'Envious' and 'River' hear the album grow increasingly boxy and heartfelt.

Review: It wasn't so long ago we were writing about the joys of BVDUB's Fumika Fades, a new double pack in February that sunk us deep into moving ambient soundscapes. Now the Bay Area dub techno titan Brock van Wey is back once again with yet another album - he dropped plenty of them last year too so is clearly in a mad creative patch. Slowly Shifting Lakes comes in multiple formats, this one being a double CD. The ambient here is coarse and textured, fizzing synths stretching out over skittish rhythmic frameworks before sinking into calmer waters on cuts like the escapist 'Searching For Glowing Shores.' Another triumphant album for sure.

Review: Geir Jennsen returns as Biosphere, one of the most enduring names in Norwegian electronic music and by now synonymous with elegant, plaintive ambient of the highest calibre. Inland Delta is made up of nine new musical pieces recorded between 2022 and 2023, primarily focused on improvised performance on a range of vintage keyboards recently restored to pristine condition. Review: Even for fans of Dean Josiah Cover AKA Info's Sault collective, it is hard to keep up with their prolific output. There is little known about how is involved but they must be mad talented because over several albums already they have excelled at soul, jazz, stream of conscious lyricism, socially and politically charged funk cuts, choral music and plenty in between. Last year they dropped Earth, which was a free album (one of five including 11, AIIR, Today & Tomorrow, and Untitled (God)).) and is their ninth overall. It mixes soul with Afro-drum patterns and is another dizzyingly diverse work that leaves you in awe once more of this band's incredible achievements.

Review: Sault took an unusual path when they released five albums simultaneously in late 2022 and offered them as a free download behind a password encrypted link, but despite the mountainous 56 tracks the plaudits came rushing in. Reportedly made as an offering to our Lord and Saviour, Untitled (God) was quickly marked out as the highlight of the five sets, and now it gets its own outing as a more traditional release. The sound is out of this world, tapping into a seriously roots-y kind of funk, showered in holy reverb and recorded with an in-the-room authenticity that matches the religious slant to the music. Make no mistake, in terms of spiritual funk this is very much the realest of real deals.

Review: By this point it feels fairly safe to say that FSOL will never stop either reissuing or releasing albums, as long as they're alive that is. Brian Duogans and Garry Cobain's music is trailblazing, and they've had successes in both the underground and mainstream worlds since the late 1980s. Review: Theo Parrish and Maurissa Rose are Detroit musical veterans (even though Parrish was actually born in Chicago) and they have worked together on a number of superb singles in the last few years. After that fruitful start to their working relationship they finally flourish into a new full length that arrives soon in the form of Free Myself, It arrives, as you would expect, on triple vinyl on Parrish's own Sound Signature label, but also here as a CD. It is a lovely deep house exploration with smooth vocals of Rose - which come in the form of a soulful stream of consciousness - over Parrish's dusty, hypotonic beats.

Review: This is a CD verison of Ryuichi Sakamoto's very welcome return to the fray. It is his first solo album since 2017's async. Milan Records have released 12 in January to coincide with the venerated Japanese composer's 71st birthday, and the timing is poignant given the album draws from musical sketches created while Sakamoto battled for two and a half years with cancer. Sakamoto himself describes reaching for his synths as a kind of therapeutic response to a big operation, and so the music carries an added depth of personal experience from one of the most profound ordeals a person can go through.

Review: A curveball for the ambient artist, 'No Highs' represents the longtime Tim Hecker's focus on the present state of the world. Compared to the textural blissouts of his earlier work, the clue for the meaning of this album is in the title. 'No Highs' is rather bleak and unsettling, reflecting the polluted and chaotic state of many parts of the world - all of it if we continue on the same path. Hecker's usual sonics are replaced with distortion, noise and dissonance, using electronics, saxophone and strings. Not intended to soothe or distract, as is often assumed with much 'ambient music', this is an album that succeeds in confronting and challenging instead.

Review: A month before he passed away in December 2002, Joe Strummer delivered what turned out to be his final performance - a benefit gig for striking firefighters at Acton Town Hall, where he was backed by his then band the Mescaleros. This must-have CD presents that performance in its entirety, including the infamous ending - where Strummer's former Clash bandmate Mick Jones emerged from the audience to join him on stage for performances of 'Bank Robber', 'White Riot' and 'London's Burning' (it was the first time the two had performed together since 1983). Recorded for a radio broadcast, the gig was undoubtedly special, with Strummer and his bandmates powering through classics including 'Police & Thieves', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais' and 'I Fought The Law'.

Review: All Life Long is the latest work from accomplished ambient, experimental artist Kali Malone. It's the first work since 2019's The Sacrificial Code on which Malone has composed for the organ - the instrument she's best known for. Review: With Elton John having played his final gig in the UK - that celebrated appearance at Glastonbury back in June 2023 - there will no doubt be increased interest in the few live albums he has released. This one, which stretches out an entire performance (complete with audience interaction and oddball banter) across two CDs, hails from 1972, when he was just becoming the iconic artist we know and love today. That means a mix of early, glam-rock era favourites as well as a clutch of cuts that still get masses of plays today - think 'Daniel', 'Your Song' and the riotous 'Honky Cat'. There's also a killer cover of 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On' that shows Elton at his barnstorming showman best.

Review: On Evolve, Nick Douwma has gone back to the future, offering up an album that giddily mines the music that inspired him to fall in love with electronic dance music in the first place. So, while it's undoubtedly a radio-friendly, 21st century big-room dance album, the collected tracks include nods to many classic dancefloor anthems (see 'Fine Day', an EDM-d&b re-make of the Opus III classic that also inspired Orbital's 'Halcyon'), crossover acts of old (the Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers), vintage hardcore and jungle, and 90s house. A string of guests and collaborators swing by to help, including ARCO (on recent single 'Vibration (One More Time)', Chicago house stalwart Gene Farris (on the throbbing, festival-friendly 'It's Time'), and hardcore and jungle pioneer Jonny L ('Turn Up The Bass').

Review: Dolphin is a new collaboration from UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and treasured Venetian ambient maestro Gigi Masin. The album was recorded in those strange years of 2021-2022, as both artists pooled their talents into mutual compositions which they then developed and embellished through the thoroughly modern practice of online file exchanges. There was time for some final recording sessions in person at a studio on the Isle Of Wight, where Moses Boyd, Tom Herbert and Siobhan Cosgrove lent their various instrumental talents to some of the pieces and the end result is a gorgeous, expansive trip through elevated musicianship and patient songwriting - a truly exquisite feast for the ears and mind.

Review: Having delivered a string of loosely themed collections of extended mixes and 12" versions from the 1980s, the long-running NOW compilation strand has launched a new series focusing on music released in specific years across the decade. 1980, the inaugural collection, is relatively light on pop, 'alternative' and new wave extended mixes (though OMD, Spandau Ballet, Sparks and UB40 all appear), but big on soaring disco hits, crossover club classics and chart-bothering dance numbers from the dawn of the decade of Thatcher and Reagan. Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. Familiar names include Daniel Bell, Shy One, Willow, Peggy Gou, Midland, Will Saul and Ron Basejam, but there's also surprise inclusions like Tim Reaper and Comfort Zone teaming up for a signature jungle excursion. This is a heavyweight reflection of everything Phonica has represented for the past two decades, but equally a sign towards where they're heading in the future and it couldn't sound rosier.

Review: Veteran producer and the founder of Planet Mu, u-Ziq (real name Mike Paradinas) presents what is arguably his best album yet, though it will fly under the radar for those who are only interested in his early work. Like something between domestic house, beatific trance, and watery music for Atlantean holiday-letting, 1977 says it's a nostalgia trip to when Paradinas started making music under different monikers, when in actual fact it's the kind of thing we haven't ever heard him do to such an affecting extent. A family affair, Paradinas' partner Meemo Comma's voice peppers the album in a ripplingly soft manner, while a washed-out lounge mood, worthy of re-soundtracking the film Solaris, continues the album's instrumental charge.
