Review: It's been some three years since Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts released his last bits for Mule Musiq, but now the Canadian minimal house mainstay makes a welcome return with this first outing for the Yoyaku crew. In many ways Yoyaku carries the torch for the scene this chap helped pioneer alongside the likes of Akufen and Mossa, so it's good to see things come full circle, and to note that he's lost none of his production flair. 'First Bump' is resplendent with expressive synth lines and an understated groove, while 'Upsalla' happily dives into a more twitchy, tangled kind of construction which will keep DJs more than happy in the extended blend. 'Victory Lap' shakes things up with a leftfield dub drop which typifies Coutu-Dumont's instincts outside the standardised framework of house music.

Review: Varhat continues to explore the potential of sleek minimal tech house attitude with a broad palette of input, serving up some cool and deadly tools on this latest YYK No Label 12" to inject some flair into the party. 'Daddy Beat' is a percussive beast leaning in on dexterous breaks from less-mined sources and keeping the pressure up around the 130 zone. 'Hold On' nods to Detroit techno in its swirling pads and machine soul bleeps, all the while trucking on a focused rhythmic trajectory. 'Surprise I'm Logan' returns to the drum funk sampling and 'Engage' locks into a distinctive strain of machine funk with plenty of hypnotic motifs and playful fills to turn heads in the midst of a marathon session.

He drops a steam stream of music and most of it sells out in quick time. For his latest outing he heads to Yung Dumb out of Canada and cooks up more twisted takes on house and techno. There are acid gurglings underpinning the opener then a Fred Everything remix strips things back to dubby drums and rubbery 303s. Things get melodic and reflective on 'Mellow' and then 'No More' is a gorgeous synth piece that is full of heartache and forlornness.

Review: New and exciting Los Angeles label YKW returns with a second release, this time from Montreal's Ohm Hourani who is well known in hardcore circles for his superb jazzy and minimal stylings. He offers one particularly standout track, 'Herbs Miles,' which mixes up a sample of Herbie Hancock discussing the legendary Miles Davis. His own live-recorded and processed trumpet layers in another soulful edge and makes it a brilliantly original jam. G76/Gojnea76 delivers a weird and wonky remix and then 'Down the Syncussion Hole' is another inventive and rather madcap sound from this studio wizard.

Review: Yecad Music has impressed with its first couple of releases and now the third is no slouch either. It comes from Romania's Constratti who has a unique take on minimal and master of sound design that lends his music a singular character. Check out these tuns for proof - 'Late Summer' is all silky interwoven synths, squelchy basslines and hooky little percussive details that flows freely. The Sepp remix is more driving and also more stripped back and spare and 'Tempura Rolls' then brings some crisp and deep tech house sounds and the final tune is a dubby Mihai Pol remix.

Review: Bohm is next up to bring his own minimal and tech house perspective to X Masters and does so with a stripped back yet effective style across a quartet of real bumpers. 'Land Of Lost' kick off with a bobbling bassline and old school 90s house chords that bring some intrigue. 'Most Of It' is a little deeper and warmer with a hint of garage skip in the drums and 'Finest Touch' then rides on another nice old school house bassline with with a future cosmic twist in the synths. Review: All we really know about this one is that The Wolf is an artist based in Berlin. He has started his own label here to serve up his latest studio concoctions and this first one is all about slamming minimal cuts. All of them are untitled in true underground minimal fashion, of course and the first one pairs rickety lines with under-lapping bass and dreamy chords. The second one heads to the stars with Detroit style pads smeared about the mix over punchy but stripped back rubber kick patterns and last of all is a more thumping deep house groove with more liquid pad work and a sense of serenity.

Review: Frank Staniek has previous form in the minimal tech house scene as Frank Sonic, recording for the likes of Trapez and My Best Friend. Now he's helping shape out the sound of new San Jose label Wild Palms Trax by laying down the second release under a new alias, Link Gaetz. This is minimal delivered with a crisp focus, from the deliciously pointed 'El Camino' to the deep-diving 'Floripa'. The rhythm section is precision tooled and the atmospherics walk the line between escapism and restraint with ease. 'Cactaceae' is a freakier offering on the flip, but it's still looped up for a direct hit, while 'Into The Redwoods' plays around with vocal hooks and synth riffs for something more like an end-of-set knees up, minimal style.

'Heartgirls' has a filthy groove with snappy hits and marching drum funk all run through with some wonky synth action. 'We Like Rain' is another full flavour and fleshy cut with rasping bass madness and militant drums. 'Almost Death' is another one with a stiff rhythm and slamming drums, this time with unsettling vocal stabs and wild acid lines. Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. Further 8-bit playtimes come in the form of 'Acid Highway' and 'Acid Causeway', recalling the feeling of scouring the outer edges of an Atari Kart game and encountering nothing but rolling, pixelated skies; 'Tough Grugoy Acid' and 'Woodlice Acid' make up the longer wavelengths on the spectrum, stomping and echo-rimshotting to ever-weighty, yet jolly ends.

Here it is 8Kays that makes a debut with Falling Down, a selection of superb collaborations including 'Matematica' with Glowal which is tense and electric tech with indie vocals and with Juan Hansen he cooks up the medically hopeful 'Falling Down' which then gets two remixes. Review: Warm Sounds hits release number 15 with more of its signature house grooves and they come from a pairing who have often worked together before to great effect. Review: Minimal stalwart Jay Tripwire has been as prolific as ever this year, serving up the Narcotic Oscillator EP for The Other Side and collaborating with Cristi Cons on Witching Hour. Now it's time for the Canadian veteran to serve up some boss level beats to emergent label VRNT, holding true to the rhythmic demands of the stripped-down tech house scene while finding plenty of space for expression and innovation in the sound design. 'The Real Life Of John Merrick' is a masterfully sculpted workout, while 'Pleiadian Wavelength' unfurls exquisite melodic and textural synth forms around an understated groove. Herck completes the package with a crunchy, bugged-out version of the lead track which harks back to the crooked computer funk synonymous with Canadian minimal in the mid 00s.

Review: Voodoos & Taboos unveil their anticipated new LPs series with Human Aventura, the debut self-titled album from the promising Corsican producer. An unusual dance release modelling itself on electro and chiptune, but finding itself somewhere in the hidden interstice between them, this is a self-described "libidinous Mediterranean spoken disco" album, giving elements of Telex or Kraftwerk, albeit with a progressive bent best heard on pithy cuts 'Solid State Scouter'. Not one to be missed for those who like it intelligent, fidgety and FMmy.

Review: Vitamin For Ears is back with a second offering of healthy sonics to improve your day and this time it is Adam Collins who is the doctor in charge of serving you your medicine. It's an atmospheric opener with 'Aacid Reboo' setting a moody scene before 'Sombor' then rides on live-sounding broken beats and 'Customary' rides a rubbery, rocketing house groove full of playfulness and smart samples. The flip side offers three more hugely varied sounds from ambient to icy minimalism on 'Echo Walk' via more rugged tech on the final cut 'Electro Spruce'.

A Mountain Of One are a duo who deal in Balearic-leaning pop with a subtle charm and an adventurous spirit, and they initially approached Villalobos for a single remix of one of their tracks. As a fan of their sound, Villalobos ran with the project and it wound up as a full remix album of seven different versions. On the earlier tracks Ricardo takes a surprisingly light touch, while the later stages find us knee deep in the mesmerising roll of his minimal house, shot through with dubbed out ingredients from the original songs. It's surprising and satisfying in equal measure, showing Villalobos at his best and quite the scoop for A Mountain Of One.

Review: Following close behind Macarie's Out Of Streets EP, Verum returns with a further expansion of its sound as a new label in the minimal tech house scene. Olivian Nour sets the mood in compelling style with the subtle jazz guitar licks hovering over brooding twilight cut 'Collateral Damage', while Dorothy's Dream explores skittering, modulated forms on psychedelic workout 'Ten Colours'. Review: The Paris based Velvet Spirit releases its fourth EP. After appearing on their third releases, the label had to have a release specifically dedicated to Numero 6 solely. If you are looking for something different then check out the head turning 'Midnight Treat'. Electro like you may have not heard. The Indy Jane mix of 'Are You Sure' is particularly nasty (in all the right ways), while on the second side, 'Vicious' is a clever and unique take on tech house that injects a bit of electro in it while 'Bloodline' is the smoothest cut of the lot. Quite eerie in a new wave way, you have to hand it to Numero 6 for making something quite unique.

Review: It's been a minute since we last heard form the VBX Music crew out of Amsterdam, having last put out a monster EP from Villalobos and Ferro. Now they're back with a high-grade second round from Frank Haag, who delivers modern tech house with attitude across two essential cuts for any head who wants to be keyed into the best new cuts in the scene. 'Image Exposed' rides some killer boom bap drums and MC licks for a rolling slice of breakbeat house, while 'Basal Ganglia' works some incredible, rubbery synth lines into a trippers delight on the B-side.

On the flipside, 'Night Drive' is another sublimely soft focus and supple techno roller with infinite horizons and milky pads that dissolve your soul. A superb debut.

Review: Chris Stussy is very much one of the contemporary scene's most prominent producers. He has emerged from the Dutch underground to take the global circuit by storm as a DJ but also a studio slickster who fuses tech, minimal, house and breaks. His own label deals in just that and here it offers up a trio of trippy and future facing dance floor delights from Varhat. 'Nobody' is a turbocharged tech cut with freewheeling cosmic melodies and 'Mopho' takes a more deep and breezy approach while 'Breaking Out' (Paolo Rocco remix) is balmy and deft minimal lushness.

Review: Kolter, hailing from Cologne, Germany, delivers a fresh - we don't use the word lightly - new four-tracker, 'That Was Fresh'. Centring nominally on the infamous literal breakbeat vocal sample, this EP plays out as a contemporary take on the breakdances and funk backbeats come electronic dance bangers of yore. Beginning with an impossible-missioned eponymous A-sider, before moving into flat beat electro house of 'This Is It' and the cascading metro-synths of 'Feel', before finally concluding on the retro trance rejoinder, 'I'm Fine, Thanks!', there's really something here for everyone.

Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: Logidy is a Berlin-based artist commonly found rolling with the O Mato crew, and he follows up on impressive releases for Home Again and Mellow Rec with this ear-snagging drop for Dutch label Unsilenced. There's a hint of the cheeky synth flair you might expect from Eya and other such labels orbiting the minimal scene, with 'Heat Check' in particular having a whale of a time with catchy lead lines. 'Logi Tech (Club Mix)' is an equally crafty affair, albeit striking a seedier tone in its melodic make up. 'Rocket Science' has a warmer, soul-spirited energy and plenty of musical chops in its arrangement, while the 'Beach Mix' of 'Logi Tech' heads towards fittingly sunnier climes without losing that instinct for ear-catching nooks and crannies in the production.

Review: A new year always brings with it a wealth of new labels and 2024 is proving no different. The latest to fall in our laps is Unknown Musik from Spain, and the production credits on this inaugural EP also go to Unknown Musik, although the two edits are actually by Sadkiel. They first tackle 'Latin Flute' which has some nice fresh tech beats run through with Balearic guitars and soul samples that really bring it to life. On the flip is the more minimal styling of 'September' with its pulling low ends and raw percussion as well as some edgy stabs to keep things from being all too sweet.

Unknown Collective kick off with 'Claw' which is a bubbly garage-tinged tech sound with nice bulbous melodies up top. Review: When Deadmau5 first arrived, he was something of a lightening rod for underground purists who scoffed at his big mouse head and unashamedly over-the-top live performances. All these years later we now know he was in fact ahead of the times and somewhat helped to precipitate the vast EDM revolution that followed with its maximal sounds, crazy characters, and sync button sets. For Lack of a Better Name was the Canadian's fourth album back in 2009 and it features the critically acclaimed 'Strobe' as well as 'Ghosts 'n' Stuff' with Rob Swire of Pendulum. As far as electro and prog house goes, it hits all the right notes.
