Ask The Universe
Review: Melody Of The Soul continue to explore their melodically charged strain of minimal tech house on this fourth release on their label, which leads in with the prog-tinted seduction of 'Night Owls'. It's subtly epic, charged with sweeps of orchestration which tease at a big drop to come. 'Flame' has a slightly more intimate, heads-down approach, but it's no less detailed and dynamically produced. 'Igako' explores some pop touches in the context of a bigger room sound which still holds fast to the slick tech house framework and 'Ask The Universe' takes a more delicate approach with pattering percussion and melancholic piano which will set any set off on a sentimental trip.

Everything That Is Seen
He Restored My Soul
Review: Barac is one of the torchbearers for the contemporary minimal scene and a figurehead of the Romanian scene. He shows why he is healed in such high regard with this new three-track EP which kicks off with 'Hypnotic Grayscale,' a nice sleek and elegant minimal roller carefully detailed with aloof vocal sounds. 'Everything That Is Seen' is bright and subtly uplifting with wispy melodies adding a celestial touch and 'He Restored My Soul' then brings a little more otherworldly charm with its woozy pads and smeared vocals over floating and liquid rhythms.

BBB002B
Review: The secretive Only Music Matters label rolls out its seventh EP here and it's from an unknown producer or producers who seem to have a love of tech house. Opener 'AAA001A' is a warped cut for freaky 'floors with trippy vocal details and gloopy beats and bass. 'BBB001B' is more airy and light in its silky minimal rhythms but is detailed with some paranoid pads that keep you on edge while 'BBB002B' rides a nice gritty, propulsive beat and has some wonky, detuned keys adding colour. Another great outing from this low-key but high-quality label.

Review: Baby Ford is back being reissued again and we couldn't be happier about it. Few have ever matched the matter levels he achieved when it comes to deep minimal and tech house fusions. This latest on his own Trelik takes the form of three classic cuts from two much sought-after EPs - Built In and All That Nothing. The title cut is a shimmering and sublime fusion of rubbing low ends and icy hi-hats. 'All That Nothing' then picks up the pace with more dub influences and swaying drums and 'Plaza' has a tech house edge that makes for more driving grooves.

Review: Tetsu Shibuya, better known as simply Tetsu or BRISA is a Japanese producer and DJ known for works on the iconic Japanese Jazzy Sport imprint, King Street sub-label Nite Grooves and his own BRISA Music. Leading the EP is title-track 'Stir', in collaboration with Turbojazz BRISA delivers a classic slice of deep house built upon layers of bright stab sequences and loose organic percussion. Detroit's beloved Jon Dixon turns his hand to 'Stir' next, encapsulating the soul of his hometown in reshaping fragments of the original composition. The original of 'Reverie' opens the B-side, laying down a broken rhythm, low-pitched vocal hooks and elongated bass grooves for a more bruk tinged feel. Byron The Aquarius then extracts the core of 'Reverie' and spins it into bumpy, subtly nuanced house workout. Lastly the third original 'Flux' rounds out the release, shifting deeper in funkinfused realms with a playful plucked bass groove and heavily swung drums.

Review: Functional house experts Toolroom are back with Toolroom Sampler Vol 11 which is again packed with maximal club cuts for big dancefloors. Martin Ikin's 'Make U Sweat' is indeed sweet tech that never stops pumping under libidinous vocals. Flashmob's 'My Body' is loopy and manic tech with peak time intent and Nathan Barato and Matheo Velez offer up the macho grooves of 'Weapon.' Last of all, Jenn Getz & Alfie offer another slight tweak on try Toorloom sound with the grey and gritty white knuckle beats of 'Vibration.' A great EP for working DJs looking for instant impact.

Review: East End Dubs's Eastenderz label has carved out its own sonic niche in a world where dub, garage, tech and hose all collide. The label has always found superb artists who tap into that and now it is Dennis Quin who offers up his own take on the template. It's a no-frills affair full of tough grooves starting with the Spanish vocal flair of Nausica's 'Se Pone Loca'. Review: Moroccan favourite Kosh tops up a new trifecta of releases for his own Convergence label with this latest edition of 'Enslaved'. Melodic electro-acid tempered by vocoder lines (the 'Vox Mix'), speedy 4x4 trance ('Supernova') and deeper-down-the-rabbit-hole tabfests ('Above & Beyond'). Clearly, there's something here for everyone; even a delectable topping of bonus beats on the A2, which works just as well on its own as it does with its vocoded vocal centrepiece.

Review: This EP marks a coming together of two electronic music institutions as the ever-consistent Traumer lands on the always innovative FUSE. The sound designs here are next level as you would expect of this producer, and that's true right from the off. 'Nectar' is a fleshy, liquid, unbalanced dub tech cut to start with and 'Lemerci' then dials into a more heady and back-room-deep house with balmy pads circling around the beats. There is a more astral edge to the cosmic tech of 'First School' and 'Rodage' rounds out with nice bubbly and rubbery drums and effective claps that get those hips swinging.

Review: Purple Print has become a strong player in the minimal scene in a short space of time, with the likes of Sepp, Delaj, Bisharat and Vid all offering their considerable wares into the growing catalogue since 2021. Their compilation 12" was just as on-point in 2023, and now they're back with a second volume which is not to be missed. Avidel leads the way with the seductive, vocal laced groover 'Someone', while Lukea follows up with a dub techno-tinted workout entitled 'Crescent Moon'. Octave and Nicolas Duvoisin do some smart r&b sampling for undulating roller 'Wanna Be Down' and Zenk creates a sparkling sunrise reverie with 'Dreaming In A Shell', a stripped back but detailed and distinctive workout which ends the record on a high note.

Review: Art Gang Records bursts onto the scene with Volen's Stinger Pinger EP, shows the LA-based producer's highly energetic and intergalactic sound. The three original tracks are excellent dancefloor numbers perfectly suited for the dark-lit rooms of underground clubs. 'Go' kicks things off with a great groove and techy atmosphere, offering a fun and futuristic dancefloor workout complete with infectious melodies. 'Last Tab' follows suit with its heavy acid house stomp, delivering a relentless assault on the senses. On Side-2, the title track 'Stinger Pinger' is successful with its deep rhythm machine programming, catchy hooks and jackin' beats, sure to keep the crowd moving till dawn. Markus Sommer's Gary Ablett Double Drop remix of 'Stinger Pinger' adds a groovy twist to the original, offering a fresh take that complements Volen's raw energy perfectly. Overall, some really strong dance tracks that are poised to win over techno and house crowds old and new.

Review: After a superb debut release, Forgotten Coordinates is back with a follow-up from the eponymous artists behind the label and once again this is a tasteful excursion into the realms of minimalism and tech. 'Be Good To Me' pairs a snappy tech house drum and clap combo with some spaced out and intergalactic pads and a stone code classic vocal that will cause dance floor carnage. Things get punchy for 'Let's Get This' with its warped low ends and amped-up beats all seven to get you on your toes and vibing. Two classy and effective tunes for sure.

Review: Here we are introducing new label Art of Dark and its AODVA Series, a platform showcasing a diverse array of artists, especially those who are newcomers to the music scene. For its inaugural release, the series spotlights four different artists with their own distinctive sound and who are all set to go on to big things, at least if you ask us of the evidence of this. Log_In kicks off with 'Antivirus' which spins you out on nice cosmic tech vibes and screwy alien synth lines, while Landed's 'Anaesthetic' is a retro-future tech house pumper with neon lines and a tight bassline. Matthew Hartshorn's 'Computers' gets as digital as you would expect from the name with the sound of malfunctioning motherboards over sleek beats. Jamie Dodger shuts down with the more edgy percussion and rapped vocal sleaze of 'Yes Yes Release The Stress'.

Side-1 kicks off with the dynamic collaboration of Latent & Retrolog on 'Super Villain,' a fusion of electro and breakbeats adorned with captivating samples and a bassline that hits hard. Review: The latest on Djebali's label comes from M High, who knows exactly how to step up to the flavour of Parisian minimal tech house Djebali has made his name on all these years. 'Try To Make' is a perfect opener, riding on a sweetly swung groove with heavy, subby bass down low and Mood II Swing style dub chords chopping in up top. 'Othirty' is a more delicate affair with some psychedelic sound sweeps which really elevate the track into exciting new realms - something which could send an after hours dance spiralling. 'Stripped' locks back into that heads-down bounce from the first track and then the 'M Groove' mix of the track slips some extra funky percussion into the blend to make it a sassy strutter for the ages.

Review: Montreal outfit Flabbergast tap into something brilliantly leftfield on this new EP for Adams Bite. Opener 'Peppermint Poodle' is a grubby and bubbly minimal tech house cut that is defined by a characterful Northern voice speaking about a love interest and various other things. It's wonderfully weird and sure to get anthem status soon. 'Manger Du Bon Manger' is more languid and late night, 'Mou D'Etat' is a deep and zoned out cut with odd samples and trippy sound designs and 'Dans L'Oeil' rounds out with a synth laced cruiser for 5am wig outs.

Review: Bassex Records emerged as a niche haven for electronica enthusiasts in the mid-90s, championing and, more importantly, blending genres like trance, breaks, acid and techno, the label's initial influence remained confined to the West Coast. However, as trancey breakbeats gained traction in Europe over the past 15 years, Bassex has ascended to cult status. Rebirth was label owner Mike Knapp and DJ Jason Blakemore (DJ Trance) and this compilation specifically gathers a few very desirable gems from three different releases by them and places them here. Bassex Selections is an important window into the label's enduring legacy and snapshot of the west coast scene circa 1994.

'Tell Me' sets the record off in superlative fashion, toying with th plushest synth work and crafty, dubbed-out sound design all gliding across the top of the crisp, undulating rhythm section. Fade (Jan Jelinek remix) (7:07)
Wave (Jing remix) (4:22)
Review: Contemporary tastemakers Geilgling return with a set of remixes of material from Leafier Legiv's recent album, Mirror. First up it is German minimal maestro Isolee who flips 'Fade' into some of his signature sounds - smeared synths and abstract designs all weave together over a minimal beat to make for something seductive and late night. Polish loop master Jan Jelinek then flips 'Fade' into a slow motion shuffle with bright, celestial shards of melodic light and downbeat, melancholic vocals over a chugging beat. Last of all is a mix of 'Jing' that is all broken loops, chopped vocal fragments and hallucinogenic synths.

Review: Omakase, which is the name of a style of Japanese dining that means literally 'I leave it up to you' and gives full control of a meal to the chef in question, is also now an ever more vital minimal label. This is its third outing and one with Antraum at the helm. It kick off with 'Hyaku' with its bluesy vocal samples and lazy, infectious drum loops, then has 'Shichi' has more silky and spaced out pads and smooth grooves. 'Rei' is a dreamy one with balmy chords making for a trippy late night day dream and is the sort of track that will zoned out dance floors at 5 am. A tasteful EP for sure.

Review: Sascha Dive, the German DJ and producer, has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the electronic music scene. His signature style, a blend of techno and tech house, has earned him a dedicated fanbase and accolades from industry peers. 'Lost Inside This Sound' captivates with its evolving melody and infectious house groove. 'Backs To Scream' showcases a deeper, more introspective side, with a hypnotic bassline that sets the dancefloor ablaze. 'Time Is Flying' evokes a sense of euphoria with its bouncy rhythm and soaring chords. Finally, 'Space Odyssey' transports listeners to a cosmic realm with its ethereal soundscape. Review: Digwah keeps it tough on this next drop on their own self-titled label. It's a ninth outing and in the time it has taken for those to come out, increasing numbers of people have been catching on to the label's work and making it a 'must check' in their mental lists. This one opens up with 'Couldnt Hate You' which has some Ian Brown vocals samples stitched into a glitchy and menacing beat. 'Open Ended' is just as twitchy and anxious with steely drums and brain frying synths all working hard to fire every synapse in your brain. Effective stuff.

It begins with the title track which is a futuristic mix of silky and serene synth lines and smooth but propulsive drums. 'Pressure' rocks back and forth on a metallic loop and layers up the balmy pads, while 'Rocket Science' has a more textured feel and zippy little synth details that bring plenty of intrigue. 'Stellar Flux' closes out with another comically inclined fusion of dynamic drums and heady synth patterns, this time with a playful neo-disco undertone.

Side-1 kicks off with 'Zero's Delight,' a spirited and slightly jackin' house anthem that sets a fun and sexy tone. Following up is 'State Of Peace,' delving into a more techy and minimal groove, perfect for those seeking a deeper, more introspective vibe. Flipping to Side-2, the title track 'Kemickal Affairs' takes the listener on a journey through a deeper groove, reminiscent of 90s era house sounds but infused with a contemporary energy. Closing out the EP is 'Morning Krew,' characterized by its pumping bassline and seamless fusion of house and tech elements. Review: Few labels do minimal as well as Trelik and in terms of artists, Edward is also as good as they come right now. This perfect pairing opens up with the deeply alluring 'Time' with its woozy pads and smeared chords over warm and rubbery drums. It's a hypnagogic affair then 'Vacuum Tube' has a more menacing air thanks to the wispy and unsettling synth details and clunky hooks. 'Watch Out' brings a more spangled and rubbery rhythm that has colourful details peeling off the beats and last of all, 'Stream' ups the ante with some thudding deep house and widescreen ambient synth work.

As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. Still going strong almost 35 years after its inception, it's nice to see the label is still welcoming fresh talent: Roger delivers a sultry, sauna-dunked steam on 'Part Of My Soul', one of the most contented-sounding house tracks we've heard in a while, thanks in part to the vocal stylings of Rimarkable; then there's the more repetitious ardour of 'Radik'Hall', 'Cosmic Funk' and 'The Music', all of which revel in the purely seductive potentialities of deep house production. Once again he mixes up his slick infectious grooves with acid twitches and tripped out sonic motifs that make for tunes as effective on the mind as they are the body. 'It Works' is a slinky opener with low slung bass, 'The Darkhold' is more driven with dubbed out low ends and 'Far Far Out' gets a lil' freaky for the after party. 'Moderno Nocturno' (with Kirsten Sees) is a gritty and metallic tech cut with real snap in the drums. A superb EP that offers plenty of DJs and dancers.

The title track opens up and is coarse and rich in texture, with slapping hits taking centre stage while languid guitars slowly garner your attention. 'Theme For What' is another unusual one, this time with trippy melodies and tumbling drum loops, while 'Geek Groove Odyssey' layers up pulsing bass and bleeping sonar synths into a serene cosmic trip. Evans goes first with 'In Time' which is coated in nice dusty pads and frayed medic edges with a grinding melody that brings some funk to the deepness. 'I'm Down' is another rugged deep house cut with loose kick patterns and swirling pads. Ruh then brings her signature smoky basement house sounds to 'S41' with its rickety percussion and warm infusing of supple synths. 'S45' shuts down with dubbed-out drums and molten chords that serve as a perfect early evening warm-up.

Their Acamar EP arrived in 2015 and really took the pair behind it up a level with its meticulously crafted house sounds, serene melodies and general sense of electronic elegance. It perfectly defined the Innervisions sound back then and still very much aligns with it now. 'Acamar' is a free-roaming cut for blissed-out 5am listening and tranced-out dancefloors. Review: Random Factor's 'On The Air' EP is a hugely sought-after classic by those who know. It came on Ralph Lawson's ever-reliable 20/20 Vision and now, as it turns 25 years old, he has decided it is the right time to get it remastered and reissued. 'On The Air' is first up on this fine EP from Carl Finlow and it has serene synths that bring to mind Detroit techno soul over pulsing bass and slick drums. 'Lockdown' has a raw vocoder vocal over punchy drums and twitchy synth stabs and 'Undercurrent' is another weapon that has more than withstood the test of time as it bumps along on funky drums and is overlaid with more playful synth patterns. 'Disconnect' is a crunchy and 8-bit closer with pixelated synths and screwy acid lines. Superb.

Review: Take Me For A Ride is the latest from Luuk Van Dijk on his own label Dark Side Of The Sun. The title track is a peak time tech house workout that is lively and energetic. Reminiscent of house at raves during the mid 90s, the combination of the vocals and rhythm makes this a fun track to listen to. The remix adds a New York house sound to it for a nice alternate version depending on how your set is trending. For the B-side, 'Doin' It' is a more mellow, dreamy and laid back affair while 'Sexy Motherf*cker' is a mid-set groover, all making for a versatile 12" that house music heads should get plenty of plays out of.

If you are looking for something different then check out the head turning 'Midnight Treat'. Electro like you may have not heard. The Indy Jane mix of 'Are You Sure' is particularly nasty (in all the right ways), while on the second side, 'Vicious' is a clever and unique take on tech house that injects a bit of electro in it while 'Bloodline' is the smoothest cut of the lot. Review: TV Hill Records starts things off rough and curiosity-rousing, with a technical itch from OG AG (Andrew Grant) in collaboration with fellow producer Dimneonsum. A mid-paced deep techno calculator, 'What's Up Everybody' pares back any semblance of emotion for pure robotic urgency, with every sound moving in juddering clockwork lockstep in an abstracted world of pure, preservative mathematic topology. Opener 'San Fran' pits nervous FM loops against an equally anxious Shepard-tonal riser, while calmer moments such as the beatless 'Drakey' still disquiet with their eerie glassiness. One for the bleepy heads, the only humanistic element is the revelatory vocal sample on 'Found Out'.

Review: Dan Formless' "Fried All Day" is a minimalistic tech house track that becomes the second release for the upstart label Bank of Switches. The original track is characterized by its repetitive beat, sparse instrumentation, and hypnotic atmosphere. The title 'Fried All Day' evokes a sense of exhaustion and overindulgence, which is reflected in the track's strangely hypnotic rhythm and quirky sounds. The Alex Arnout remix takes a more driving approach, with a more upbeat and melodic approach. Overall, this record is essential for lovers of minimal tech house and techno. Showcasing Dan Formless' unique and uncompromising style he is bringing the fun back to dance music enthusiasts with this one.

Review: Repeat's 'All & All' series is doing a great job in documenting the immense contribution that UK tech-house pioneer Terry Francis has made to the electronic underground. The genius of Francis's work of the late 90s and 2000s is how it presented a form of purist tech-house that drew as much from classic US deep house as the stargazing futurism of techno. This fifth instalment in the series boasts three decidedly deep excursions. Side A sports 'Loving You', an ultra-dreamy and immersive affair from 2001 that wraps deep house elements around a typically chunky and hypnotic groove. Over on the B-side, the echoing male vocal snippets, sumptuous pads and bubbly electronics of 'Strong Woman' are followed by the slightly more dubby (and even dreamier) brilliance of 1999's 'Love In'.

Centring nominally on the infamous literal breakbeat vocal sample, this EP plays out as a contemporary take on the breakdances and funk backbeats come electronic dance bangers of yore. The A-side opens with 'Mind Floating' (Ruffy Pagan Renip), a hypnotic track with a deep bassline, psychedelic synths and a driving beat, followed by 'Chcem Strongly' (Ruffy Surf N' Turf), a more relaxed and ethereal track with cosmic ambient techno and early trance influences. The B-side features two remixes of 'Mind Floating'. The Special Character Peaky Renip remix is a chord-heavy take on the original, while the original 2010 Secret version is a more electro-oriented interpretation. Carnedd Dafydd is a strong release from Luv Jam and Maria Slovakova, showcasing their versatility and skill as producers. The heavy balance of psychedelic and chill out is premier.

First off he offers up his own Acid Mix of 'Perro Balearico' and it's a supple, deep and dubby track with liquid synths and prog chords that sound both retro and future all at once. The original is a more dreamy and spaced-out sound for 5 am sessions. On the flip is a more punch but still silky and warmly melodic remix from Mario Liberti before last of all, Gabriel Rai gets darker. His drums hit harder and the synths are moodier as he takes dancers down a late-night path of mystery and intrigue.

The sound is big, bold and 90s on this EP, with 'Reality' setting the tone perfectly with its trance-informed arps, sensual rhythm section and 'outer space' speech samples. 'Find Me' has a slightly more intricate techno make up to its synth work, while 'Rockets' shrugs off the grandiose synths for a tougher rhythm track sprinkled with acid. 'Watch Me' completes the picture with a rawer, nastier workout that maintains that old-stool flavour the duo have laid down on this deadly release.

Review: Swiss label Creaked has decided to give over a full 12" to remixes of HRDVISION's 'Captivated Heart' and the results are varied and impressive. It is the cultured electronica of Nathan Fake that kicks things off with some widescreen synth drones, She Spells Doom then brings some twitchy tech house and Shanx goes for something laced with alien effects, gurgling synths and swampy beats. Efemme brings some acid laced minimal funk and Sinistarr brings compelling broken rhythms and icy urban metropolis vibes. HRDVISION himself also steps up with a Hrdvsiovsiivosvsiosvin remix to close out in mad fashion.
