ZZZ EP

Deep House
ZZZ
ZZZ (Volta Cab Warehouse mix)
Akom (original mix)
Inc (origina mix)
Review: Commencing the new Italian imprint Frole in style, Danny Ward, better known as Dubble D, is presenting his Moodymanc alias in a convoluted artist mix up that needn't raise concerns about the quality of house music contained within. "ZZZ" is pared right down to a minimal hum, with just the bare essentials of drums at work while developed content thrums away at the core of the track for those that listen closely enough. Volta Cab brings a much bigger sound to the remix, slapping some chunky chords and choice bleeps over the top and beefing the drums up no end. "Akom" returns to more restrained tones, with plenty of space for vocal snippets to echo in and pristinely arranged drums, while "Inc" warms things up a treat with chord-infected smooth house tones and a much breezier outlook overall.

Zwo Fremde (11:38)
Backside 50 (8:42)
Review: Although best known these days as Cab Drivers, Berlin's Daniel Paul and Jens "DJ Zky" Augustowsky have been working together under different aliases since 1994. Karo was one of their earliest aliases, with the Zwo 12" - in which "Zwo Fremde" originally appeared - slipping out in 1995. It's good to see the track getting a second airing, because it's arguably one of the finest tech-house tracks of all time. Loopy, hypnotic, tracky and blessed with some wonderful cyclical synth motifs, it feels like the missing link between Detroit-influenced UK tech-house of that period and the more dub-focused sound of Berlin. This time round it's accompanied by the specially recorded "Backside 50", a similarly slick, melodious and locked-in cut bristling with spacey pads, darting acid bass and intergalactic electronics.

Zulu Shuffle (origianl)
Zulu Shuffle (Ant Brooks remix)
Zulu Shuffle (Collective Machine remix)
Review: Jason Chance got his break on Great Stuff this year with this enticing little EP - it's only one track and two remixes but man, it's pretty tasty! Chance's "Zulu Shuffle" is a tech-house fuelled thumper, complete with electro-reminiscent stabs and an almost trancey vibe. Ant Brooks turns it into a grinding, clicking Radio Slave kinda tune on the B and is followed by Collective Machine's big room, drum-frenzied house bomb!

Review: Toolroom welcomes exciting new prospect Max Chapman to their flagship label. He burst onto the scene three years ago with great releases on Elrow, Snatch, Viva and Lost. He teams up with up and coming maestro George Smeddles here for two quality jams on this great EP. "Zulu" on the A side is the kind of rolling and funky tech house that just reeks of White Isle hedonism and will appeal to fans of Lost, Material Series or Knee Deep in Sound. On the flip "Charger" will absolutely blow the doors off any venue with its pounding groove and wall of bass which you could imagine Marco Carola or Paco Osuna playing at peak time in the main room.

A much more personal affair, written and created with Peter Kruder, the album takes a deep dive into Hell's psyche. His inspirations, fears and fascinations all laid bare as we glide and slide from the poignant ballad of "Anywhere Anytime" to sinewy, sinister 6am acid ("Guede") via orchestrated cinematic synthesis ("K House" and "Inferno") to strident slices of evocative and highly narrative house music such as "Wild At Art". Hewn together with shades of experimentation and timeless pop science, Hell's created something incredibly special here.

Zug (Aktion mix)
Zug (Sorgenkind mix)
Review: EXPERIMENTAL/ELECTRONIC: M=Minimal come through with an excellent vinyl accompaniment to their recent CD of reworkings of Conrad Schnitzler's Zug from Ricardo Villalobos and his Fisherman's Friend, Max Loderbauer. At over 19 minutes, the Aktion remix just about fits on this twelve inch and sees Max and Ric adopt a club ready approach with a stripped back, heads down groove driving forward through a slightly unnerving, guttural re-appropriation of Schnitzler's alien synth textures. Adopting a more ominous and wholly experimental tone, the Sorgenkind mix sounds vaguely like a heavy breathing bull pondering the surrounding expanses of shifting dronal textures as you wait in vain for anything approaching a beat to surface. Download codes are included.

Alles In Allem
Review: The Funke man returns with his first 12" for Kompakt in over a decade! German producer Sascha Funke has a long and productive relationship with the Cologne outpost dating back to the Compass 12" issued through the label in 1999, and lately this has manifested itself through Saschienne. The ongoing music project between Funke and wife Julienne Dessagne, Saschienne 2012 LP was full of deep, sweeping techno and it's an approach he takes with this Zug Un Zug 12". The title cut is pure Funke, gradually building from just a few elements into a hugely dramatic dancefloor epic themed around perfectly placed piano chords. It is complemented well by the more urgent drive of "Alles In Allem" made all the more distinctive by some bizarro, almost Giallo synths.

Based in Frankfurt, they always set out to do justice to their homedown, sourcing local artists almost exclusively. New signee Mayell chucks cut-up vocoders and street-traffic basses into a beguiling stew, producing four cuts that would sound right at home in a modern-day spy thriller.

Spiritu Haret
Review: Romanian producer Adrian Niculae hasn't pulled up many trees in his short production career, but his name has turned some heads thanks to this 2-tracker for All Inn Black. Both "Morning Haze" and "Spiritu Haret" fuse stark, hypnotic, minimalist rhythms with beautiful and engaging musical elements. "Morning Haze", for example, benefits from the combination of deep chord stabs and loose, additional percussion. "Spiritu Haret", on the other hand, has a breaksy shuffle and muted riffs that sound like filtered horn hits. Throughout, there's much warmth, something often lacking from similarly stripped-back productions.

Review: King Unique have cemented a fantastic reputation for themselves over the last few years having made some seminal tracks for labels like Boys Own. Now they have their own brand - Curfew, named after the regular club nights that they put on up and down the country. The first release - "To The Left" got massive acclaim and huge amounts of DJ play. This follow up release under their alter ego - Kupon is also a killer. This has been caned now for a long time since before the Summer by the likes of Pete Tong and Fergie from early CD promos. The two tracks which are both variations on a theme are simply devastating. The A side "Zoom In" starts with its chugging bassline and spacey percussion before building and dropping into some seriously powerful synth edits. The flip side varies the theme slightly with a harder approach and powerful synths. This record has very serious potential and will crossover into many different genres.

But he only puts out a small quantity of tracks a year. A prominent figure in the Rotterdam scene, he's primarily known for his rough hardware jammy cuts, a trend which continues on this very latest EP 'Zonegrens'. Rotterdam Electronix label don DJ Overdose sees to a seleccy of five pieces straight from the cutting room floor, delivering nothing short of gritty toothcuttery. Two downtown city hubbubers helm up the A-side, before we are thrown aside by 'Bad Dream Tuesday, which hears a sudden foray into tundric dream-techno.

Review: Kepler is a man on fire right now - well, he has been for some time in fact. As well as serving up a new collaborative outing with Burnski, he has also put together this solo EP for Pilot. 'Zone' is a twitchy tech cut with bleeping melodies over silvery and silky tech drums. 'Good 2 Me' has a naughty shuffle to it as the crisp drums bring the infectious groove and the smart vocals add human colour. 'The Beat' kicks off the B-side with a nice squelchy bassline and some rude-boy sonic signifiers while 'Back Moving' then has a lovely low-slung swaying funk to it.

Bruno Pronsato is a man who has always made a big impact with minimal elects and here gets deep inside your brain and rewires it with trippy sines and deft motifs. Luc Ringeisen's 'Just Why' then constructs a bendy and elastic groove that never sits still and constant chucks out smeared synths and warped pads, and Dubfound & Dopustim's 'The Short Bed' then unfolds on a hiccuping groove, with lava-lamp style daubs of colour drifting up and down the mix.

Review: Luca Cara's Spacetravel project continues to grow in style and panache, almost surpassing his early LP for Germany's legendary Perlon imprint. The Italian producer is back on Vera & Alexandra's Melliflow label, out of Germany, landing on our shelves with his second studio LP to date, the wonderful Ziusudra. Right from the get-go, it's clear that Cara's ideas are clear, and that his vision of dance music is shaped by the outer fringes of space, often crafting tunes that sound as if they were borne out of alien spaceships. Nonetheless, the best part of these tracks are still shaped by a strong sense for the dancefloor, swaying their beats to the bounce of fat basslines, metallic analogue beats, and a strange sort of tropical futurism. Minimal gear at its best.

Review: Ever since they moved to the UK back in 2000 Italoboyz, aka Marco Donato and Federico Marton, have built a formidable reputation
in the fertile minimal techno scene of their adopted hometown, London. Their energetic DJ sets at Fesh are the stuff of local legend.
Their productions, meanwhile, have seen them gain notoriety around the world.
Now Italoboyz consolidate their position as dancefloor alchemists par excellence with a 12 inch for Berlin's Get Physical.
'Zinga' is every bit as hot as its title implies, and once again proves Italoboyz' knack for sourcing sounds usually foreign to the club
and then making the club wholeheartedly rock to them.

For their second edition it's Nicolas again, collaborating with Sebastian Werle as Sedee on KUSI 002. "Zib Escort" is the kind of deep and hypnotic, percussion driven groove reminiscent of the aforementioned Barac or Vincentiulian. Druggy and minimal afterhours business executed finely! On the flip, the remix by Understand label boss Lezar Cezar is even more reduced, quirky and bumpy in a way that's undeniably Perlon influenced; are we're liking it!

Review: "Zeugma" is the first EP from Brwn Shoes, an artist discovered by Fondation. This newcomer to the electronic scene was for years an observer, in the sweaty basements of London and Valencia, before getting in to DJing and music production with panache and attitude. The Brwn Shoes sound is based on dirty, insistent monosyllabic basslines, providing moody, stripped-down pieces meant to drive the crowd. "Zeugma" and "Tigers Don't Sleep" are two perfect examples of this new breed of sound he's developing. Crude, raw and sexy - that's how we like it.

Mango Solo (Moebius remix 2 part 2)
Review: Following his recent appearance on DFA, Ricardo Villalobos turns in a suitably epic remix for Endless Flight in the first of two Moebius & Neumeier retweak twelve inches from the Japanese label. To set the scene, Dieter .Cluster' Moebius & Manfred .Guru Guru' Neumeier collaborated with Kraftwerk drummer Conny Plank in 1983 on Zero Set, an album of lean electronic experimentalism. A subsequent Zero Set album from Moebius & Neumeier was recorded in 2007 as tribute to Plank who had passed away some 20 years earlier. And whilst the first album has been treated to several reissues over the years, a blanket of rarity cloaks the second album, with it not being readily available outside of Japan, thus rendering a comparison of the album version of "Mango Solo" and Villalobos' epic reworking somewhat impossible. Clocking in at nearly 34 minutes over two sides of vinyl, this is classic Villalobos built around fluttering percussion, breathy discordant textures and the repetition of "one, two, three".

Review: The heat just keeps coming from the EYA camp as they swiftly follow up LONEWOLF 003 with this crucial care package from Kiev's Zolaa. Moody atmospheres abound on the stripped and stalking electro opener "Silver Needle, Golden Pain" before giving way to the decidedly cheekier acid snapper "Noctivagant". "Horiy Spokiy" broadens the remit of the record too, taking on a widescreen sound that takes in rich layers of melodic counterpoint to create a vivid soundscape that still kicks in all the right places. Then Etienne drops in a remix for the B2 which shakes things up with some breezy, feel good chords to counteract the punchy thrust of the drums.

The pair collaborate once again after last year's Unten EP for Metroline Limited. The title track is a long, low-slung and trippy affair that's aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. It's now over to Esoteric Workshop, who has released previously on Sensual and 87 Records and rest assured that the Zern EP certainly follows in suit. Starting out with the deeply hypnotic subtlety of "Travers" featuring a gentle broken beat, emotive pads and tripped out atmospherics: this one ticks all the right boxes. The remix of said track up next by Anestie Gomez stays faithful to the original, but gets dubbier by injecting more tempo and shuffle into the rhythm complete with a rolling bassline which works even better. On the flip, the mysterious producer experiments further with broken beats, like on is the classic Chicago deep house sounds of "Loren" and then back to four/four with the tough, electro-infused analogue driven groove of "Sera".

He kicks things off with "Brawd", where undulating electronic motifs and faintly foreboding snatches of melody wind their way around a rolling techno groove, before offering up a swinging, off-kilter take on tropical techno rich in darting minor key melodies and jazzy sub-bass. Turn to the flip and you'll encounter two more chunks of modular dancefloor hypnotism: the slowly shifting, head-in-the-clouds throb of "Cysuron" and the melodious but off-kilter tech-jazz flex of hard-to-pigeonhole EP highlight "Rhyddid".

Review: Operating in the fertile Romanian minimal scene, it's been a strong couple of years for Sepp since first appearing with Nu Zau on UVAR and BP Mind Series. Both tracks on the Zenit Nocturn EP are loaded with subliminal drums and subtle slithers of atmospherics, finding their groove and sticking to it like glue. "La Inceptuil Serilor" falls with a delicate poise, letting the finest traces of melody leave the soul hanging in the background of the track so the drums can do their thing uninterrupted. On the flip "Cetind Pe Baudelaire" gets just a shade chunkier although the beats stay firmly in the softer end of the production spectrum, calling out to the most patient and poised of DJs to get deep on these long form tracks.

Ripperton is already known for his project, Lazy Fat People, while Agnes is responsible for numerous critically acclaimed releases. They met at a party in Geneva, where both were invited to DJ, and the two danced as much behind the decks as the crowd did on the floor. The two thought they could have just as much fun in the studio, and that's exactly what happened.

Review: Chris Tietjen has long been a valued member of the Cocoon family, and mixed his first CD for the Frankfurt-based label way back in 2006. Here he celebrates a decade of collaboration with a tenth and apparently final mix for the imprint. Partly designed as a look back over the label's releases over the past 10 years, Zehn comes across like a labour of love. Densely packed with tracks - he impressively squeezes some 36 selections into 70 minutes, showcasing work from a veritable who's who of techno talent - it offers a typically fluid, atmospheric, late night-friendly chug through tech-house, minimal and European after-party hypnotism.

Nute50 (13:41)
Little Ur Ex (8:14)
Review: Joe Montana aka Edoardo Fatovich is an Italian musician, DJ and producer who has been releasing music since 1993 across many seminal and now defunct labels - but more recently on Mindshake, 8bit and Claque Musique. Presenting the fifth release on fellow Italian imprint Pick.Sel here, we aren't sure whether these are some more unearthed gems from Fatovich archives or freshly made creations, but that's exactly our point - this is some timeless music on offer here. The A side features the emotive minimal tech house trip "Nute50" which could call comparisons to like minded legends such as Stewart S Walker or Akufen's earliest output. On the flip, "Little Ur Ex" is an exercise in reduced boompty business - the kind of micro-house that was popular in the mid noughties.

Vulturul (7:51)
Si Gaita (8:07)
Review: The Botanic Minds stable continue to inject the vague framework of minimal club music with some colour and sass with this excellent EP from Romanian mainstay Sepp. 'Fluturul' is a perfect 10-minute escapade with a seriously funky bassline and dreamy but snappy melodic hooks on top to carry you away in a reverie of sunkissed psychedelia. 'Vulturul' takes things in a deeper direction without losing the panache and personality that made the A side a winner. 'Si Gaita' seals the deal with a sundown delight that weaves together more of those interlocking melodic lines to get bodies shaking in an effortless, day-into-night fashion that spells out a long and fruity session ahead.

Felipe Valenzuela & Dani Casarano - "Machinebag" (7:38)
Yate - "Tooman" (10:32)
NSD - "A Story Behind Everything" (12:59)
Review: Ukranian label Propaganda has made great strides since launching in early 2015. They've previously put out a quartet of quietly impressive 12" singles, and here unleash their most extensive release yet: a double-pack compilation of previously unreleased cuts from their current roster of artists. There's naturally much to admire, from the wobble bass, relentless beats and hushed Rich Medina vocals of Mateo Papachioli's "Journeyman", and bass-heavy, dub-flecked broken techno of Nastia's "Safari", to the bouncy beats and ghostly vocal samples of Yate's undeniably epic "Tooman". NSD's similarly lengthy closer "A Story Behind Everything", which reminded us a little of Don't DJ's recent album on Berceuse Heroique, is also rather fine.

HOSH & Stimming - "My Shadow"
Solomun & DJ Phono - "Ice Cream & Bonus Miles"
Stimming & David August - "Sexy Biest"
HOSH & Uner - "Sonar"
Review: Subtlety has always been German label Diynamic's trademark, and on this split release, its artists favour a light touch to seduce their listeners. Hosh & Stimming's "My Shadow" is the most full-on track here, its dubby drums and breathy vocal samples underpinned by grinding bass licks. Without this element, "Shadow" is an innocent sounding, summery house groove in much the same vein as Solomun & DJ Phono's "Ice Cream & Bonus Miles". There, choppy drums and a juddering bassline provide the basis for atmospheric chord sequences. A similar approach is audible on Hosh & Uner's "Sonar", which features innocent vocals, while Stimming & David August's "Sexy Biest" completes this understated release with icy synths and jazzy piano keys set to stripped back drums.

Review: Minimal house from Romania here! Now that we've got your attention; yes, it's pretty awesome stuff from Colorhadoo, aka Rhadoo under a new alias, and he certainly delivers the goods, also yet again making a transition in his studio prowess. "J Strawberry" is just beyond categorisation really and it's easily one of the most paranoid and sinister soundscapes we've heard of late and we love that kind of stuff! The Christi Cons remix is a welcome dancefloor friendly revision; all deep and hypnotic as you'd expect with an uneasy atmosphere and trademark creepy vocals murmuring in the background.

Review: Purple Print's musical universe expands once more here with a ninth outing on wax and a fine various artists selection to mark the occasion, with Minube appearing on each of these collabs. It's a wonky and afterparty-tinged minimal jaunt from him in solo mode to open up with as 'Zaha Zhivai' gets you locked into a slinky groove. He then inks with Rebreanu for the marching bleeps and squeaks of 'Bro Disch Tut' and with D I N he makes 'Wormhole', a dry and dusty final tech shuffler before a fine work with Andrey Djackonda in the form of the abstract funk of 'Can't Stop The Time' shuts down.

Zafro (Suciu remix)
Review: With only one other release to their name, Loopdeville are back with more ruminations on stripped down and spooky tech house with a hint of breakbeat appreciation running in its veins. "Zafro" lays the uneasy textures on thick while the beat rolls in a perfect cyclical funk that cuts through the horror film tones, although it in no way prepares you for the low slung jazz shuffle of "Strangers". With rumbling bass and scattered flecks of beat, it's a bold creation that still manages to pull everything together into a focused groove. Suciu comes on board for a remix of the title track that breaks the cloud of tense murk and instead lets some sunnier melodies fire chance beams of light into the proceedings.

Review: Moscow minimalists BodyParts are back everyone: look out! This time around they've drafted Eric to take up the baton. Who's Eric you say? From what we've found out he's Dmitriev Ernest. a Ukrainian DJ/producer/promoter, based in Odessa and this is his vinyl debut. It's not bad either. Opening up with "Zabava" a deep and percussive bass driven groove for the after-hours (or peak time: minimal style!) he goes ultra deep on the dreamy atmospherics of "Spogad" which is utterly sublime. On the flip, the first track gets a remix by Romanian royalty in the form of SIT aka Vlad Caiu and Cristi Cons, whose deep reductionism works a treat on their club mix of "Zabava" while the dub mix up next is reminiscent of the sombre, stripped back hypnotism of masters such as Baby Ford or Thomas Melchior.

As I Left College (7:16)
Don't Fight The Feeling (6:51)
No Wait (7:15)
Review: Paris' Yoyaku imprint serves up yet another edition in its YYY series, courtesy of anonymous artists or alter egos of established ones on the minimal house scene. This is actually the second part in the limited sublabel series, which was inaugurated last year by Difid aka Dakpa from Palma de la Mallorca. Bumpy and looped up house on the hypnotic afterhours tip is the order of the day on "As I Left College" and reminiscent of Derrick Carter's work as Sound Patrol back in the day. The reduced mini-funk of "Don't Fight The Feeling" is perfect after hours fare that will go down a treat on dancefloors as far as Berlin and Bucharest, while "No Wait" (on the flip) goes deeper down the rabbit hole, taking in some even trippier and hypnotic elements than heard heard even earlier.

Review: Mysteries and rumours still shroud Yoyaku and the identities behind its YYY series. This time we are given a name: Vincen, whose only available details are that he works in the Yoyaku studio. You can tell, too... The second the liquid analogue tones drip and melt over the thundering robust kicks and those sinewy atmospheres whisper into the mix, there's a sense of class and weight that can come from no amateur. The same can be said for the more forthright acid house homage "Fune". Loopy and rolling like DJ Pierre at his prime, this could crumble bare warehouse walls within bars. Long may this mystery continue.

Review: One day, the tsunami of releases from Yoyaku's YYY series will turn to a steady trickle. As it stands, the Paris-based shop, studio and distribution outfit is riding the wave with all the confidence of a professional surfer. YYY797 is a little more rubbery and elastic in feel than some of the series' recent releases, with "797A" sounding like a contemporary tech-house head's interpretation of early '90s deep house - think bouncy synth-bass, rolling drum machine rhythms, bubbly electronics and dream house style chord progressions. On the flip, "797B" offers a speedier, spacey take on the same track. While similar in feel to the A-side, it also boasts some rather attractive nods towards vintage Motor City techno and early British tech-house.

Review: Yoyaku Distribution's matter-of-fact YYY series continues to impress, delivering a third "mystery" 12" of the year to date. The un-credited producer gets straight down to business on side A, wrapping darting melodies and liquid electronics around fizzing cymbals, undulating kick drums and warm bass in an outer-space tech-house style. There's a slightly darker and more energy-packed feel to the flipside track, whose staccato percussion hits, restless drum machine handclaps and back-alley stabs sound like they were created with sweaty basement dancefloors in mind (despite the presence of the series' usual fluid chords).

Review: Parisian tech-house hub Yoyaku - record store, studio, booking agency and label - has been responsible for a serious amount of music over the last 12 months, most of which has been released on limited-edition, hand-stamped 12" singles with little or no information. Predictably, they've kept the same "mystery" format for this latest vinyl missive. On side one you'll find "398 A", a cyber-sonic tech-house bubbler that wraps ghostly chords and metallic electronics around a rolling rhythm track and mind-altering bassline. On the flip, the un-credited producer continues in a similar vein, coming on like vintage, early 2000s SWAG mixed with the metallic tech-house funk of fellow Parisian label Robsoul Recordings.

Review: There's been plenty of hype surrounding the YYY Series since it launched earlier this year. So far, information has been limited. We know that the mysterious label is associated with the Paris-based Yoyaku agency and record shop, but not the identities of the producers behind the releases. Still, as long as the quality remains high, few DJs will care. "398A" is a chunky, floor-filling affair, with woozy, Detroit style synth motifs joining forces with a bustling, pleasingly percussive groove. It's not quite deep house, tech-house or techno, but rather something in between. Arguably even better is flipside "398B", whose combination of fluttering synthesizer riffs and two-step influenced deep house beats is both beautiful and floor-friendly.
