Your Style (Maya Jane Coles remix)
Review: Echoey claps sooth us into Crosstown Rebel's latest offering from Maceo Plex. Plex's Life Index album on Crosstown, released in January, garnered praise from industry heavyweights worldwide. An undeniably smokey and sensual vocal from Maceo himself holds no barriers as it breathes out "girl I love your style" in a sexual and repetitive moan. Rattling shakers rise up over the deliriously deep and gruff bass line as "Your Style" prowls itself into a sultry trip. On the flip, the much lauded star of 2010 Maya Jane Coles remixes an equally dark and low slung deep house version, chugging along with a slightly clickier edge that compliments Maceo's original flawlessly.

Review: Pale Blue are the duo of Elizabeth Wight and Mike Simonetti, who released their debut album to much critical acclaim back in 2015. They come together once again with their latest EP for the mighty Crosstown Rebels. Simonetti and Wight have each earned musical stripes in their own rights: Simonetti founded the hugely popular Italians Do It Better, as well as his own successful record label, 2MR. Wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the West Coast band Silver Hands. On offer here is some pop-inflected deep house that fits right in with Damian Lazarus' modus operandi here: from the brooding yet bittersweet title track, or the sexy noir-acid of "Daughter Of Babylon" which sounds like a drive through Los Angeles after midnight. Finally "Love" is a dark and strobe-lit after hours house jam which supports Wight's sultry dead-pan vocals perfectly.

Maratone (6:32)
Review: Following some great releases on top labels like Desolat, Saved Records, Kling Klong and Kaluki Musik, Chilean Francisco Allendes is back with 'What You Do' on Crosstown Rebels. A sweltering house number aimed squarely at the main room, its infectious vocal atop is perfect for getting those heads down on the dancefloor, something that the now Ibiza-based DJ/producer has been an expert at over the last years. Over on the flip, the inimitable Harry Romero takes up remix duties and gets deep, down and dirty as expected, followed by one more original by Allendes in the form of 'Maratone' - a trippy minimal/tech house cut more suited to the afterhours.

Review: Since emerging with the slinky four tracker Changes last year, the London based producer and DJ Francesca Lombardo has become a fully fledged member of the Crosstown family, with this third release on Damian Lazarus's label arriving amidst news the fast-rising Rebel queen is working on her debut album for them. As with her previous efforts, "What To Do" really conveys Lombardo's growing talent as a song writer within the framework of electronic music. The raw production here is elevated by Francesca's sultry tones and there's three further remixes that rework the source material in pleasantly differing directions with Matrixxman's effort standing out!

Flash Point (8:35)
Transposed Sky (feat Paul Brenning) (5:34)
Review: Jonathan Kaspar returns to Damien Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels for another round of captivating and melodic techno by way of his latest EP 'We Come'. Already having graced the discographic annals of Cocoon and Kompakt, Kaspar's sound is now well established; his pushes and pulls adeptly between big room, dubby trance and broken-down electro and house, never quite placeable in the intermediary spaces between them. One could call it progressive house, but that would be underselling it; 'Flash Point' is the highlight here and the case in point, making masterful use of ducking and distortion to really flesh out the central syncopated stab as a focal point of the track. Nor should Paul Brenning's version of 'Transposed Sky' be missed for a second.

We Call Love (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Art Department and Crosstown Rebels seem to have taken the house world by storm in the last two years. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White's "We Call Love" has been picked apart carefully put back together again by the legendary Balearic beardo DJ Harvey for a limited one sided, hand stamped, hand numbered white label. Slow burning and downtempo, "We Call Love" plays with the original's raw electric guitar melodies, piercing key sequences and chopped vocal snippets. Sensual and lethargically bouncy, it's a late night house track made in typical modern and blase style from the CR camp. Be quick!

Review: Tibi Dabo unveils his long-awaited full-length 'Vista' on Crosstown Rebels, with the kaleidoscopic nine-track album showcasing his diverse and rich sound-palette, centring on a chillout, colourful minimal house mood recalling the likes of Herbert or Eliphino. Born in Barcelona but steadily working his way into a Europe-wide infamy, Dabo has slowly grown in stature to become a Crosstown Rebels favourite, further bolstered on this dreamy eight-tracker which demonstrates a particular knack for making minimal and deep house sound personal and homely, not just 'deep'. Elegant and diffuse, bouncy and serene, this isn't an album you'll want to miss if you've a keen ear for detail.

Vibe Your Love (Zev's Southern Sunrise rework)
Review: ** Crosstown Repress ** Techno veteran Eric Estornel has really hit his house music stride as Maceo Plex, with a sweet little remix for Glimpse earlier this year on Crosstown augmented by Nico Jaar's treatment of Plex track "Gravy Train" which featured on the label's nifty Rebel Rave comp. Team Lazarus offer a tantalisingly good preview of what to expect from Maceo Plex's forthcoming album with "Vibe Your Love". In contrast to recent CTR output the track is resolutely warm, driven by heavily filtered piano melodies that echo beneath the organic groove with heavily processed vocal edits the preface to a vintage house vocal. The flipside remix from Wolf & Lamb's Zev sees chunky house beats augmented by shimmering chords and brassy key flourishes that work as the perfect appetiser to those dreamy vocals that arrive on top of an understated acid ripple to ride the track out.

Review: The legendary Crosstown Rebels - a label that's undergone so many changes and mutations over the years - drops a rather tasty 12" by the one and only Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons. "Vermillion" is a wonky and distinctly tribal 4/4 number with seductive pop vocals and a prominent indie feel to its groove. If you were already panicking about a lack of dancefloor debauchery then you needn't worry because there's a tight remix package: Agoria, Jamie Jones and Deniz Kurtel come through to save your dancing feet. Big EP!

Without You (extended 12" mix) (8:37)
Review: It's been pretty hard to escape the hoo-hah surrounding Art Department ever since YouTube footage surfaced of the dropping "Without You" at the Hot Natured DEMF party back in June. The Juno editorial branch is in complete agreement that such hype is totally justified on this debut release for Crosstown Rebels. "Vampire Night Club" sits across the A Side with a guest spot from Seth Troxler, er, vamping it up on vocals backed by some haunting harmonies from Art Department's Kenny Glasgow. It's the dynamic usage of infectiously dark bass patterns and intermittent synth stabs that help cement the eerie atmosphere that pervades the track. This sense of pulsing menace is transferred to the B Side brilliance of "Without You". Made for play in dark venues where the crunching beat, throbbing bassline and creeped out vocal refrain from Glasgow can reverberate around the walls and your cerebral cortex, "Without You" is destined to become a mainstay in record boxes for many months to come.

Review: The rise of Jamie Jones over the past two years has been nothing short of meteoric. Now officially the world's number one DJ (according to readers of Resident Advisor, at least), Jones could record and release the sound of a car alarm and it would be hailed a "classic". Cynicism aside, the Crosstown Rebels regular has made some extremely high quality house over the years, as this collection of previously unreleased archive material so adroitly proves. Expect plenty of soft, touchy-feely material (including an excellent collaboration with Art Department) that offers plenty of thrills for fans of the Visionquest/Crosstown Rebels sound.

Together Alone (Kolsch 'I Have You' remix) (7:05)
Review: 'Together Alone' is the latest flagship emoter from Pale Blue, a recent Crosstown Rebels signee and musical duo comprising Elizabeth Wight and Mike Simonetti. Wight's vocals on this neat slice of gut-wrenching wax glide across the mix in an honest fashion, recalling the muted serenity of trip-hop legends like Martina Topley-Bird or Tracey Thorn, but set to a minimal techno backing. Kolsch backs up the B with the 'I Have You' remix, which eschews the vocals for glitzing builds and a groovier bassline.

Review: Dennis Cruz is a tune making machine. The Spaniard turns out plenty of house and tech variations on several notable labels and always manages to find a little freshness with each one. Here he is on Damian Lazarus-owned Crosstown Rebels with a couple of solo cuts but also two collaborations. Opener 'Snake Charmer' has a lead flute moody that will do just that over steamy jungle house beats while 'Time Out' is a stripped back house sound deiced by its huge diva vocals. The collabs are firstly 'Revolution' (feat DJ Holographic) with Lazarus himself, which is a slinky and liquid tech house sound for the dead of night, then a minimal and dark roller with Ian Ludvig.

Pleasure From The Bass (Subb-an remix)
Review: We're more used to seeing Tiga in full-on electro mode but this time he's taken a shot at the techier side of the spectrum with his first release for the UK's Crosstown Rebels. Title track, "The Picture" is very much a surprise, where we see Tiga enter a thumping parade of raw-as-hell drums and masterfully executed bass lines - BIG! Subb-an takes care of remixing "Pleasure From The Bass" - actually the more electro-inclined of the two, adding some funky, late-night vocals to the groove.

The L Word (Guy Gerber's Countryside remix)
Review: After time spent whipping up singles for Moodmusic and My Best Friend amongst others, Maurice Aymard makes the leap to the long-player with a selection of jams that reflect his propensity for live instrumentation and thoroughly musical constructs within the disco-inflected realms of house music. As if Metro Area were played out by hand, tracks such as "Home" groove hard on plush live bass lines, poignant Rhodes chords and romantic lead synths. Gui Boratto turns up to chip in to "Colours & Drops" with its more prominent techy backbone, but that's offset by the non-dancefloor roll of "1994". It's a diverse album that provides the perfect platform for a skilled craftsman to explore, er, his craft.

Review: On his new record for Crosstown Rebels, rising tech house trooper Russ Yallop creates the kind of sinister n' sexy electro-house-pop that has been setting alight the likes of Hot Natured and Visionquest, helped no end by an edgy vocal turn from Aimee Sophia. Huxley gets busy for a remix, bringing forth some brighter elements from the keys to the New Jersey swing, while the electro bassline gets swapped for some rude garage antics. There's a decidedly different dub version from Huxley as well that takes a moodier tone, and then original jam "How I Feel" rounds proceedings off with a bleep-inflected broody mover.

In The Mood
Review: Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White have both enjoyed solo success over the years, but only recently together as their brainchild Art Department. After teasing us with last year's massive "Without You", they now release their debut album The Drawing Board courtesy of Crosstown Rebels. "Much Too Much" features melting lyrics originally written by Frankie Knuckles, Robert Owens and Satoshi Tomiie that are now crooned by Glasgow over a hypnotic and down tempo beat. "Tell Me Why" Parts I and II are again vocally dominated and layered over a simple yet captivating bass line that shuffles ever forward. Seth Troxler lends his deep and eerie vocal talents on "Vampire Nightclub" - a light and airy musical base that contrasts against Troxler's warped vocals. "The Excuse" -a dusky collection of electronic clicks and clacks leads to "In The Mood" on the D-side whose gorgeously old skool hip-hop style vocal showcase a welcome other side to the album.
