Deer Jade - "Jukurpa"
Deer Jade - "Cosmic Dream" (1:11)
David Hasert/Nicone - "Wasting My Time With You" (6:11)
Review: Kompakt have billed their latest collaborative spiritual house release - three groove sandwiches shared between Deer Jade, David Hasert and Nicone - as an antidote to the all-to-prevalent late-winter blues and lack of sun, an affliction that seems to blight ravers in particular. Aside from canvassing for more outdoor and/or glass-roofed venues, all we can do in the meantime is weight the tonearm and jog-start the disc; 'Jukurpa' and 'Wasting My Time With You' are just the course of sonic vitamins us daywalkers need. The former is a deep, righteous blur of just piano tritones and circumscribed handholds around fires, as weighted knee-slaps and impacts evoke the feeling of a collective ritual come out-of-body experience. 'Cosmic Dream' returns to the very same rave spot at nighttime; at this point, it's all gone a bit lunar-psy, but the desert winds and temperate nighttime heat allow ample energy for continued soul flight.

Change This Pain For Ecstasy (extended version) (8:27)
Moto (5:57)
Review: Rex The Dog has been a Kompakt artist seemingly forever but this is actually his first new music on the Cologne powerhouse in three years. He heads off on a slow-burning disco stomper that has him tweaking as much magnificence as possible out of his modular synth setup. 'Change This Pain For Ecstasy' is stripped back and pulses with energy as chords sweep through the skies and a delirious voice pleads for you to "take away my sorrow and this pain". On the flip is 'Moto' which builds from subtle vibrations to become a hefty techno cut with wild and erupting tones and crackling, corroding sounds all filling the airwaves.

Review: With a sound perfectly crafted for the emotive pop tones of Kompakt, Kolsch delivers the 1977 long player in a cascade of effervescent melody rendered through bold production. There are light, fluffy moments such as the hands-aloft opener "Oma" and the lamenting closer "Felix", while elsewhere you can find the German producer indulging a love of dub techno with the crafty delays of "Basshund". It's not all soft and sweet though, as the electro-house grind of "Eiswinter" attests as it works up a sweaty main room fervour. Likewise "Bappedeckel" has a stadium-sized approach to synths and track dynamics aimed squarely at getting huge crowds moving in unison.

Review: Childhood memories can be some of the most vivid, so it's little surprise to find Kolsch daydreaming about old family holidays on his sophomore full-length, 1983. While it's a thoroughly contemporary sounding album, there's certainly an overtly orange and red, Kodachrome inspired feel to proceedings, as if Kolsch was trying to capture the feel of old family photographs in music. In practice, this means a largely joyous blend of colourful synthesizer melodies, undulating electronic strings, and soft-touch beats inspired by a mixture of classic house, techno, tech-house and early 80s synth pop. Without fail, the resultant music is effortlessly joyous.

Review: San Fran's unstoppable and enduring tech house craftsman John Tejada is also super reliable. His sound is well established, but he always does enough with each new release to embellish it a little further. Returning now to his home label of Kompakt, he refines his palette to silky melodies, fuzzy pads and crisp beats that are superbly pleasing for both your ears and your heels. 'Sheltered' is a particularly classy cut of deft tech minimalism, 'Spectral Progressions' expires ambient broken beats with lush pad work and 'Panacea' picks up the pace in scintillant fashion. This might be his best work in years.

Review: Elina Shorokhova aka Soela is a multi-talented artist hailing from southern Russia who now calls Berlin her home. It is there where she continues to build her presence in the community through her live and DJ sets, alongside documenting the local scene and artists through her lens as a photographer. Following up an impressive run of releases on the likes of E-Beamz, Lost Palms and Australia's Red Ember, Shorokhova returns with four evocative tracks on the ever reliable Kompakt imprint. From the sensual breakbeat driven progressive house vibe of "Lily", soothing and sensual deep house for the late night on "Close Your Eyes" and the slinky and hypnotic tech hose of "White Becomes Black" - we have only seen the start of Shorokhova's blossoming and promising career.

Review: As its predecessors had done, this latest installment in Kompakt's annual compilation series gives a good snapshot of where the label's at in the summer of 2011. There's the usual mixture of melodic ambient pop, techno club hits, shuffling deep house and expansive electronica, with familiar favourites (Michael Mayer's brilliant remix of WhoMadeWho, Gus Gus's "Over", Matias' Aguayo's lo-fi dance-rock groover "I Don't Smoke") being joined by a smattering of unreleased cuts. Highlights come thick and fast, with Superpitcher's previously unheard "White Lightning", Jurgen Paape's dream-like "Pray" and Mohn's slo-mo wonk-fest "Tiefnatal" most impressing. If you're after a high quality collection of emotion-rich, cutting-edge electronic music, look no further.

Stems From Hell
Review: Brazilian Gui Boratto is now an established member of the Kompakt family, with a relationship that stretches back to 2006. His latest missive for the German imprint comes in the shape of The Drill, a two piece EP that nods towards stomping techno and screams for peak time play. The title track roars with a full bassline and simple yet powerful drums, its headstrong kick no doubt set to fuel many a dark and marching dancefloor. On the flip "Stems From Hell" is classic Boratto in style and execution; ascending chords and tense soundscapes that leave little room for anything but sweat-drenched mayhem.

Review: Icelandic trio Gus-Gus are certified Kompakt stalwarts, having already produced two albums for the legendary Cologne label. This time the group release their "Over" remixes featuring three fresh and contrasting themes. Starting with the Life And Death mix and its no nonsense structure, there's something blissfully simple about its smouldering vibes and lack of desperate punch. On the flip, Gus-Gus's staple sound becomes recognizable with a hearty tech kick as the platform for shimmering orchestral sections and fierce electronic rhythm on President Bongo's (Stephan Stephensen) "Acid Mix". Lastly, Sasse takes the wheel with a melodic and vocal dominated closer.

Review: Like much of his previous work, Gui Boratto's simply-titled third album is an album of glaring contrasts. On one hand, there's the slow, pulsating, Krautrock-influenced atmosphere of opener "Galuchat", muffled electronica of "Trap", unfeasibly gorgeous "Flying Trap" and string-laden Balearic blast that is "Third". On the other, there's the twisted techno darkness of "Stems From Hell", minimal funk of "Destination Education" and grumpy paranoia of "The Drill". That these disparate strains not only work together but also make perfect sonic sense is testament to the Brazilian's immense skill as a producer. For this reason alone, III is his most accomplished work to date.

Review: Walls self-titled debut set was one of the surprise success stories of 2010, a joyously atmospheric set that somehow felt both gloriously old-fashioned and unashamedly current. Here the London-based production duo continue their rapid ascent with a second impressive full-length full of dreamy, otherwordly cuts that variously reference slow trance, ambient, avant indie, wide-eyed electronica, cosmic disco and techno - often at the same time. It's gloriously sumptuous stuff, shuffling between intense Balearic beauty and quiet contemplation with consummate ease. If you're anything like us, it'll make your heart sing. Highly recommended.

Tight Spots
Review: "Sunporch" is the first chance to see how Walls have developed on the soft edged cosmiche sounds that formed their debut eponymous set. The track essentially builds on the more rhythmic foundations that "Gaberdine" touched on, implementing a more stringent usage of beat amidst the vast swathes of duvet thick sonic layers that messrs Willis and Natalizia are renowned for. The main deviation from the Walls sound is a beefed up arpeggio that flexes with life throughout the six minute ride through angelic techno heaven (peep the track at 33rpm for some early morning vibes too!) The duo provide an exclusive reprise on the flip, stripping back proceedings to an ethereal blip which builds excellently towards a slightly worrying spectral crescendo. A brief but thrilling descent into the depths of Walls machine funk on "Tight Spots" leaves us awaiting Coracle with baited breath.

Review: For his third full-length for the constantly enduring Kompakt label, Axel Willner has decided to take his enduring brand of Balearic loop techno to grandiose new heights. Sonically, the template remains the same - intoxicating layers of guitar, voice and ambient synth loops atop hypnotic dancefloor grooves - but the resultant tracks are just, well, bigger - cinematic, even. Given Willner's inherent skill at producing this kind of baggy, organic techno, the results are rarely less than impressive. As a result, Looping State Of Mind makes for thoroughly enjoyable listening, simultaneously appearing ambitiously big and pleasantly intimate. He deserves enormous credit for pulling it off.

Review: This release is the first Terranova material in over five years, but it sounds fresh, which bodes well for Hotel Armour, the Berlin duo's forthcoming Kompakt released new album. Terranova bring an understated yet assured approach to their productions and the title track is no exception. Over a low-slung, two-note Italo bassline and rolling Chicago drums, a forlorn singer reiterates the need for him to go out. Coupled with epic synth lines, it makes for exactly the kind of bittersweet techno pop that Kompakt specialises in. "Take My Hand" is a different proposition; not radically dissimilar to Workshop's take on house music, the dubbed out drums and thumb-clicking percussion are the ideal accompaniment to Khan's introspective vocals.

Review: Just as John and Yoko used music making to shape and define their relationship back in the 1960s, husband-and-wife Sascha Funke and Julieene Dessagne have chosen to express their love in musical form. Unknown, their first collaborative album, is a decidedly cosy and atmospheric affair, combining Funke's sparse electronic rhythms with Dessagne's icy vocals and instrumental skills (think vaguely gothic and jazz-flecked guitars, pianos and fireside-warm keys). While a definite departure for the usually club-minded Funke, it makes for a heartwarming set, as his techno and deep house-influenced grooves are twisted into warm and revealing new shapes.

Review: Michael Mayer recently described the music of Taragana Pyjarama - a pseudonym of Danish electronica producer Nick Eriksen - as "radiant". It's an apt description. Sitting somewhere between the woozy, off-kilter beauty of Walls and the glistening ambience of Trentemoller's more downbeat moments, with perhaps a dash of West Coast glitchyness thrown in (see "Pinned (Part 1)"), Eriksen's music simply shimmers with crystal clear beauty. As a debut album, Tipped Bowls is highly impressive, marking Eriksen out as a major talent. It's also one of the more enjoyable Kompakt albums of late, and that's saying something. Recommended.

Review: The oddball tribal accapella techno of Matias Aguayo's "Menta Latte" is treated to an equally superlative remix from Prins Thomas here. The Full Pupp boss casts off any notions of pleasant balearica to deliver what is his bounciest remix for some time. Aguayo's distinctive voice is kept to the fore which Prins Thomas wraps in an infectious groove of satisfying kicks and a slap bass which oscillates delightfully. Jagged pulses of acid ripple through the mix which is more than complemented by the full range of odd whistles and noises provided in the source material from the Chilean. The other remix is provided by Aguayo himself in conjunction with Vincente Sanfuentes aka The Original Hamster. Dominated by an expansive bassline, their remix delivers plenty of berimba action on top of intricate off key syncopation.
