Review: Pleasure Zone continues to be an inspiring force in the European minimal tech house scene, and they've really pulled the stops out with this essential new release from Boutiq.808 and Tom Marvin. We're not hip to who these cats are, but their music says it all as they skip through snappy rhythms and bold synth forms with the kind of flair you might find on a Spacetravel record. If you appreciate your quirky minimal played out with a live immediacy and some of that Perlon-esque sauce, this record will be well up your street.

Baba Novabass (6:44)

Mission Accomplice (7:59)
Review: Guy From Downstairs marks his debut on Pleasure Zone with four expertly reduced minimal grooves that are riddled with brain tickling sine waves and icy hi hats. 'Baba Novabass' is a symphony of sleek late night sounds with a catchy groove and 'Dil' (feat Mandela) has a bulbous bassline that ebbs and flows beneath razor sharp percussion. Upping the ante is the more high speed drum work of 'Lamps' with its squelchy stabs and muttered vocal and finally 'Mission Accomplice' layers up late night and jazzy chords with rockets rhythms and a subtly pumping b-line that works those hips.

Bombons (10:03)
Tell Me (9:02)
Review: Veteran of the Frankfurt scene Frank Heinrich aka Reboot makes a surprising appearance on local underground imprint Pleasure Zone here with 'Bombons', a blissed-out and evocative minimal tech house journey that's strictly made for the afterhours slot, all the while retaining his idiosyncratic sound throughout. The sublime feelings continue over on the flip with the widescreen, steel drum-led melody on 'Tell Me' which goes deeper and triggers an even more emotional response. This is highly engineered microhouse by a modern master of the art.

Take Eat
Last Moments Of Sunset
Review: Costin RP may be well entrenched in the Romanian scene, but his sound isn't particularly beholden to the assumed Rominimal sound. On his latest missive for Pleasure Zone he demonstrates this perfectly with the limber synth flex of 'Take Eat', the kind of stand out slice of after hours brain fodder which absolutely deserves its own side of vinyl to stretch out on. The flip side cut is pointedly titled 'Last Moments Of Sunset' and while the balmy, woozy sound may well sink into the horizon comfortably you could just as easily picture it working a warm-up slot in a club or lighting the way through a murky after hours set.

Back To The Future (8:50)
Kin 182 (8:01)
Review: When it comes to producing undulating, club-friendly tech-house and micro-house shufflers, Silat Beksi has a pretty good track record. We can confirm that this 12" - his first for Pleasure Zone following appearances on a string of like-minded labels - is similarly rock solid. On the A-side you'll find the deep and rolling "Back to the Future", where fluttering, outer-space ambient synths drift around a crunchy tech-house rhythm track rich in fizzing electronics and solid snares. Flipside "Kin 182" is, if anything, even deeper. Featuring a bolder bassline, dreamier chords and a breakbeat-driven house beat, it's arguably the more satisfying of the two tunes (though we wouldn't be surprised if more DJs champion the similarly impressive A-side).

Rolling Shapes (8:52)
Trainline (10:11)
Review: Romanian minimal-tech badboy, Silat Beksi, returns to the ever-impressive Pleasure Zone with pair of highly-crafted, ultra-sleek dance bangers that really put some style and panache into the whole scene. "Rolling Shapes", as the title implies, is a smooth and direct dancefloor bruiser that cruises at a steady tempo and yet still manages to pulsate its heavy bass with a distinctive style. On the B-side, "Trainline" gets even dubbier and more ethereal, retaining those swiping waves of bass, but adding in all sorts of quirky, off-the-cusp melodies for even more psychedelic fun. Class.

Digging
Review: Who remembers Johhny D? Assuming it is the same one, he had one of the most standout tech house cuts of the second wave some 15 or so years ago on Nick Curly's influential Mannheim label Cecille. Here he joins up with Filou on Pleasure Zone for a trio of smartly designed and slick deep tech cuts. 'Esie' is one to zone out to in the dead of night, 'Static' has a more suspensory and edgy feel with its unresolved loops and 'Digging' shuts down with the best synth work of the lot - deft lines, neon hues and curious chords all add colour to the icy beats.

Modern Dialect (7:31)
Shash (7:56)
Review: Outside of London's Fuse imprint, kings of parties around the East End, and his own NxT label, Rich NxT has released only a handful of EPs. He's up on Pleasure Zone right now however, and he's clearly in full, swinging tech mode. "Modern Dialect" is a masterful and carefully balanced DJ tool which boasts electrifying bass lines and intricate percussion loops, rendering it closer to IDM in both look and feel. On the flip side, "Shash" delves into the deeper and darker end of the spectrum, placing funky little undertones of sci-fi minimalism over a bouncy, straight up house groove. Effective, to say the least....

There (7:46)
Review: The third edition edition of Frankfurt label Pleasure Zone's new limited series belongs to mainstay Ali Nasser from Romania, who serves up a smooth, rolling and ethereal groove on the great opener "Lyric Beat". Things get more uptempo and driven on the infectiously reductionist groove of "The Calling", which we particularly enjoyed for its angelic vocals that sound reminiscent of Cassy. On the flip, "Lyric Beats (arena version)" gets much darker, dubby and rhythmic; this abstract number is deep and will appeal to fans of Vid. Finally "There" gets some delightfully snappy breaks in, over a rolling groove that's just perfect for after-hours shenanigans.

Urban Sauce (6:08)
Review: Nottingham's Mark Pearson, better known as Dudley Strangeways, is a key member of esteemed local label Leftback and has also appeared on Black Key Records, Inermu Wax and Curtea Veche in recent times. He's no stranger to Frankfurt's Pleasure Zone either, on which he returns to follow up 2018's Rondo's Return EP. This nice three tracker is called Er Fracas and features the disorienting broken beat paranoia of 'ER15' on the A side. There's more lean and reduced tackle that's optimsed for afterhours dancefloors on the flip, such as bass-driven minimal funk of 'Pesky' and the knackered broken beat atonality of 'Urban Sauce'. Tip!

Kenzo (5:57)
Krishuna (5:26)
Review: Frankfurt imprint Pleasure Zone welcomes Japanese duo Tsukasa Kato and Ataru Nishizaki aka Spangleman to the label family. After listening to their great demos, the label decided to release two records by them and here the present the first of two limited edition 12's. Starting off with the slightly jazzy mini funk groove of "Albatross" and the bumpy and reductionist afterhours groove of "Zucca" on the A side. We have then got something more upbeat on the flip, with the tough and rhythmically defined deepness of "Kenzo" and "Krishuna" which goes for a broken and soulful number with smooth chords, stuttering melodies and jazzy drums.

Neptun
Review: The ever-productive Pleasure Zone imprint is on a constant quest to unearth lesser-known talents in the field of minimal house and techno, and they're at it once again with the lean throwdown that arises from the partnership of Marc Philip and former Jacuzzi Boys collaborator Nils Weimann. Opening cut "18m 19n" is pure functionality, dropping a jazz-inflected beat and using just the smallest of samples for decoration over an unflinching set of drums. "Lost" meanwhile gets into a more twitchy mindset with its searching bass and delicate slithers of percussion, placing the track in an immersive hinterland caught somewhere between dancing and listening. "Neptun" rounds the EP off by doffing its cap to Pleasure Zone's love of paper thin breakbeats spoken in minimal terms, getting locked in a hypnotic cycle of the finest kind.

Thrown Building
Review: Despite having names of golden-grilled rappers, Bronxy and Rata are responsible for minimal rhythms and cocktail party effect vocals, not straight up rhymes and sampled beats. The EP moves from the clickety-clack of a synth-studded "Where's My Boat" on the A1 to the sublime deep house of "Thrown Building" on the B2 - a track you could imagine DJ Sprinkles playing at one of her Deeperama nights. In between these are the funkified beats and austere atmospherics of "Screen Of Death" while the bluesy note that occasionally hums in "The Touch" is a sweet nuance of this intriguing EP.

Review: He's had releases on Hot Haus Recs, Unknown To The Unknown and Soulfood but now makes a surprising addition to underground tech-house imprint Pleasure Zone. Welcome the enigmatic Lockhead to the reliable German imprint, with this functional four tracker. From the deeply bumpin' bounce of "C-Walking" on the A side followed by the dark to the dubby backroom dub of "Depth Of Groove". However, our highlights are the sexy and swing-fuelled hypnotics of "Swerving" and "Sunday Hangover" - calling to mind the work of iO Mulen or Djebali.

Trifasico (Funk E remix) (7:01)
Tensake (11:52)
Review: Two years ago, Ogeid joined forces with Funk-E to deliver a quietly impressive collaborative EP on Adult Only Shape. Here the producer resurfaces on Pleasure Zone with a solo debut single that delivers more ear-pleasing blends of tech-house and deep house. The A-side is all about 'Trifasico', a lolloping fusion of analogue-rich, alien-sounding tech-house grooves and fluid deep house motifs. Ogeid's simultaneously crunchy and dreamy original is fittingly remixed by old pal Funk-E, whose bumpin' and trippy tweak pays tribute to the more glitch-fuelled end of the tech-house spectrum. We'd also recommend checking flipside 'Tensake', a terrific, 12-minute track that wraps swelling deep house chords and Motor City style sci-fi sounds around a deliciously jacking drum machine beat.

Time
Review: Romanian producer Ali Nasser continues to make a splash in deep house waters with his rich and detailed sound, drawing on the sound design possibilities afforded by minimal constructions and working them to both solid beats and more esoteric, broken fare. "The Night" is a particularly engrossing track, pinioning off beautifully realised droplets of sound into a crisp funk, while "Go Away" calls to mind a more Mo Wax flavoured sample wielding. "Folkderground" is the stand-out track, entering into a curious sound world that looks to micro-electro as much as it looks to the delicate touch of Jan Jelinek.

Microwait
Review: Forever returning to Pleasure Zone and now on release number three for the label, Ali Nasser represents the top end of what the minimal label is capable of, not least because he knows how to inject colour and wonder into the slender rhythms to keep things fluid and interesting. "Microwait" is a shining, shimmering example of this as a lean and limber house groove goes striding off into vast soundscapes of soul-enriching pads. Elsewhere "Halucinatia" sports a dubby exterior even as it mutters out a snaking techno rhythm, and the lead track "Drift Into Clouds" pares things down further for the true meditators.

Review: Easily one of the most exciting labels operating in minimal circles in these times, Pleasure Zone deliver the goods once again with the hypnotic charms of newcomer Bacauanu. "Caiarna" may feature some peppy beats, but the delay-drenched synth lines and delicate piano fills are fine-tuned for psychedelic impact. "Cavara" pushes the drums to the front and keeps the chords submerged, but still the sound palette is rich and detailed in all the right places. "Demijloc" finishes things off with the most stripped-down offering, getting heavy on the bass to embark on an introspective journey into subliminal dance music of the highest order.
