Review: Industry veteran Steve 'Bug' Bruegesch has been more productive than ever in recent years. The Poker Flat chief returns to his beloved imprint for the eighth full length in his career, which was produced over months of enforced isolation during 2020's coronavirus pandemic. Obviously unable to tour during this time, he instead focused completely on producing without having the dancefloor as a constant influence. With that in mind, there certainly is a wide variety of moods and grooves explored on Never Ending Winding Roads: from the slinky and hypnotic minimalism of 'Ludic Loops', to the sci-fi electro beats of 'A Conscious Machine', the sensual and dub-laden mood music of 'The Awakening' (reminiscent of sounds from his sister imprint Dessous) or the knackered downbeat experience of 'Raindance 101' - contemplation and reflection is more evident in his work than ever here.

Review: Since first appearing on Poker Flat Recordings back in 2015, Pavel Iudin has become one of the long-serving German label's most reliable artists. It is, though, a while since we've heard from him, with the "Framework EP" marking his return to the storied German imprint after a two-year break. He begins with the warm, fluid and hypnotic title track, where sun-kissed guitar notes and liquid synth chords ride a locked-in tech-house groove, before offering up the chunkier, more bass-heavy throb of "Echelon". He brilliantly doffs a cap to deep and dubby techno on the head-in-the-clouds haziness of "Dummy", while electro-influenced closing cut "Automotive" sounds like an unlikely hook-up between Kraftwerk, Orbital and Rhythm & Sound.

Review: Anders Trentemoller was the noughties' greatest crossover star. From his humble beginnings releasing sleek tech house on imprints like Naked Music, Audiomatique and of course Berlin's Poker Flat - who released his modern classic The Last Resort in 2006. It gets a much deserved reissue here. Trentemoller went on to form his well received In My Room imprint, and go on to headline festivals and pack out stadiums with his acclaimed live show since. The Danish producer's debut album is actually appearing on vinyl for the first time here on a triple disc gatefold and featuring all 13 songs. The album received fantastic acclaim from both fans and journalists around the world and made it into the top-lists of the month, year and decade - alongside an array of awards for best production or best album.

Review: Born and raised in Eastern Siberia, Pavel Iudin found his way to the underground scenes of Moscow and Saint Petersburg where he firmly established his credentials. With previous releases on Arjunadeep, Treibstoff and Cyclic, the Probe EP marks his second release for Hamburg tech house institution Poker Flat. Starting off this fine release with the deeply sublime dub techno excursion "Probe 2" and the slinky main room tech house of "Halo" which is sure to make you sweat! On the flip we have a rolling and hypnotic groove in the form of "Groundlevel" which calls to mind the in vogue style of iO Mulen.

Review: Mihai Popoviciu, from Sibiu in Romania is a name that is fairly synonymous with the whole Eastern European tech house sound these days. The talented producer has had some great releases of late on 8bit, Bedrock and Toolroom and this release marks his fourth for Hamburg powerhouse Poker Flat who present the new Fiction EP. On the A side we've got the deep and slinky late night groove of "I Should" with its sultry vocals atop making a real saucy hot impression. Next up "Twisted" is a tight and rolling cut that's perfect to lead into peak time action on a main room dancefloor. Its dub stabs, hypnotic pads and tough rhythms tick all the right boxes. On the flip "Interconnected" goes for some classic Chicago acid house in the vein of Adonis.

Review: British producer James Dexter has appeared on a who's who of labels in recent times, here's the roll call: MadTech, Elrow, Holic Trax, Little Helpers.. Large Music.. need we say more? Appearing for Steve Bug's Poker Flat here with "Voices" a slinky and tripped out tech house cut that's just as suited to the mood lighting of a warm up set as it is for the after hours. "Point Blank" shows the young producer's knack for perfecting smooth and sultry deep house with dubby elements for added measure. Finally, on the flip we've got the dusty late night jam "Area 51" featuring layers of rich and hypnotic pads and getting some hazy vibes happening over its rusty drum patterns.

Pants On Fire (7:57)
Review: This is a typical Steve Bug release and this is what makes it so impressive. Like much of his back catalogue, it effortlessly flits in mood from celebratory to deep before ending up in tripped out mode. The title track sees the Poker Flat boss in typically jaunty mode, with summery keys unfolding over an upbeat tech groove. "Thick As Mud" is much darker and rides a searing bass and tougher drums. Rounding off the release is "Pants on Fire", where Bug draws on his minimal background to deliver a pulsing, acid-soaked affair that is custom-made for after hour usage.

Feel It (instrumental)
Review: Watson's second release on Poker Flat sees him step away from the deep, sensuous techno he is best known for. Instead, the title track is based on a rough acidic bass, against which synth lines bounce, surge and then judder off into the ether. "Sonar" is another big room-style track and here, insistent, powerful pulses underpin dramatic string builds and drops. It's like Watson has finally man-aged to give his deeply musical sound a functional dimension. There are no such plans on "Feel It". Dubby drums groove in and provide the basis for warm, jazzy keys and sensuous, symphonic strings.

Primary
Review: Materium sees the welcome return of Dusseldorf native Alex Niggemann, and without casting a glance at the label info you'd guess it's been facilitated by Poker Flat. Steve Bug's label has become a welcome home from home for the Aeon Records boss and this double hitter more than lives up to the high standards we've come to expect from Niggemann. Epic is the first word that springs to mind listening to the title track, the massive organ style synth line that rips out on the above sound clip should alone guarantee you agree with this summation. "Primary" proves to be just as effective despite Niggemann adopting a dubbier vibe, with the track an expert example of how to implement tension.

Paradise
Review: In the past few years Vince Watson has released records for Delsin, Tresor and Planet E, as well as his Serene album on the Rekids-affiliated Pyramids Of Mars. Now Watson finds himself on Steve Bug's Poker Flat following releases from Alex Niggeman, Martin Landsky, Daniel Dexter and the boss-man himself. The three-track Planet Funk 12" sees Watson provide some deeper, linear house in title track, which is made even more progressive and bouncy in Marco Resman's remix. The revered Scotsman then provides a spritzy and uplifting B-side with the conga-chugging "Paradise". A very strong second Poker Flat release for 2014.

The Arpeggio
Thickest Bass
Smoking Parrot
Review: Despite the somewhat questionable title, Steve Bug's latest 12" for his Poker Flat operation does indeed do what it says on the tin. The three tracks here are simple DJ tools for the dancefloor, the bass lines are indeed thick and the execution is raw. This also extends to the track titles themselves with lead cut "The Arpeggio" dominated by some jagged manipulation of a lead acid line from Herr Bug. The thickness of his bass lines is displayed most prominently on "Thickest Bass" which features a vocodered titular hook that only reinforces this - excellent drop for the DJs on this one. The amusingly named "Smoking Parrot" ends on a simpler, trackier note - Simple, Thick and Raw it is then.

Review: Steve Bug's Poker Flat come through with the Classic Jams box set, which feels a bit similar in concept (if not sound) to the Classic Cuts compilation that Clone released back in 2008, reviving a selection of dancefloor tracks spanning the 1980s to the turn of the 20th Century. Some of the music featured here has been out of print for some time and there are plenty of gems hidden in the tracklisting. Commencing with the anthem that is "Aquarius" by Jam To It Again the Bug man slips in some Fingers Inc, Essence, Swing City and his own edit of "Muzik" by Rodney Baker and Myoshi Morris. The digital edition which comes free with this 2LP set contains three bonus tracks, including DHS' deep house classic "House of God ($50 mix)."

Reasons To Be Dismal? (Motorcitysoul remix)
Review: Poker Flat revisit Reasons To Be Dismal?, the Nu Groove classic from Foremost Poets, with some high profile remixers in tow. Released back in 1989, the track was a superbly lusty example of how disco had eventually mutated into something wholly darker and was dominated by that iconic socio-conscious spoken-word delivery of Johnny Dangerous. Dixon leads the way with a self styled Update on the track that fits in alongside his widely recognised canon of pared down, driving house music without losing any of the original's charms. The Extended Sight version from the original has been licensed too and offers some raw, detuned contrast to the polished efforts from Motorcitysoul and Steve Bug that occupy the flip.
