Review: San Fran's unstoppable and enduring tech house craftsman John Tejada is also super reliable. His sound is well established, but he always does enough with each new release to embellish it a little further. Returning now to his home label of Kompakt, he refines his palette to silky melodies, fuzzy pads and crisp beats that are superbly pleasing for both your ears and your heels. 'Sheltered' is a particularly classy cut of deft tech minimalism, 'Spectral Progressions' expires ambient broken beats with lush pad work and 'Panacea' picks up the pace in scintillant fashion. This might be his best work in years.

Review: Recorded during lockdown - hence the rather apocalyptic title - and made in part using a different set of hardware and software tools than his previous work, Year of the Living Dead has a slightly different feel than John Tejada's previous full-length excursions. Of course, his fine grasp of mood and melody remains a major feature, as does his love of warming ambient chords and dreamy electronics, but these elements are twisted round a wider variety of rhythms (think mutant electro, post-dubstep UK bass, UK garage and dub techno), with warm, deep and rich sub-bass coming to the fore throughout. Tejada rarely misses the mark, of course, but there's a surprising freshness to the album that means you'd do well to sit up and take notice.

Review: American techno legend John Tejada released "Performance Review" earlier this year on digital, following up his terrific '"Dead Start Program" LP on Kompakt. It now makes a welcome vinyl pressing here, with each track highlighting The Los Angeleno's artful approach to crafting grooves that blend deep origins with soulful new ground. From the emotive deep techno of the title track delivered in his idiosyncratic style, "Promo Committee" sees him do sultry deep house as heard on labels like Poker Flat over the years, and even a bit of dark and subterranean dub techno for good measure as heard on closing cut "Stack Ranking" - this is classic John Tejada all the way!

Review: Veteran Los Angeleno producer John Tejada unveils his thirteenth Studio Album entitled Dead Start Program. He named it after a system that started an iconic 1960s supercomputer called the CDC 6600, which is used to represent a 'metaphorical reboot from the challenges life throws at you'. Moreover he's said to have used a 'limited studio setup' to create the 11 tracks on offer. From the moody and disjointed hypnotica of opening track "Autoseek", the old-school west coast breaks of "Sleep Spindle" to the brooding smack electro of "Loss" or the bouncy dancefloor euphoria of "The Looping Generation" - which is indeed classic Tejada all the way! The album comes courtesy of Cologne institution Kompakt: an imprint he's had strong rapport with since 2011.

Andres - "Just A Player"
Brad Peterson - "Trickchords"
John Tejada & Adrian Leviste - "Fashion Avenue" (remix)
Ewan Jansen - "New Stride" (Deez Follow Da Bass remix)
Review: "Classics" releases work best when the material being showcased is either obscure, hard to find or overlooked. Much of the material on this third trawl back through the vaults of Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves imprint ticks all these boxes. For example, Andres' "Just A Player" - a refreshingly loose and bumping fusion of warm disco samples, snappy beats and a killer bassline - has never previously appeared on wax. Then there's the soul-flecked, jazz-house/broken beat hybrid "Fashion Avenue (Remix)" by John Tejada and Leviste, which sounds remarkably fresh despite being 14 years old. As for Brad Peterson's strutting, acid bass-propelled "Trickchords", we're struggling to find any reference to it having been released before. Whether it has or not, it's as essential as the rest of this superb EP.

Review: Los Angeles' legendary John Tejada's classic "The End Of It All" from his 2006 album Cleaning Is A Filthy Business (on his own Palette imprint) gets a modern revision. Some might say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but he's certainly raised the bar again on this one, retaining the epic vibe and dreamy vibes. It comes with two new tracks in the form of 'Activation", providing sweet, bouncy tech house with the same crisp and pristine sound design he's renown for and "Sheven" which gets a bit deep down and dirtier with an anthemic melody almost as good as his other classic "Sucre" backed by thumping 909 and squelching 303. Tip!

Review: Signs Under Test is the 12th album released by John Tejada since his emergence in the late '90s, putting aside the various other projects he's been involved with, this alone is the kind of fact you have to applaud. Arriving some 2 and a bit years on from The Predicting Machine, this new album naturally surfaces via Kompakt and it's 11 tracks suggest Tejada's creative powers remain undimmed despite his vintage. Apparently built from the ground up using hardware synths, Signs Under Test succeeds as Tejada doesn't feel the need to cater to any particular musical trend, instead relying on his tools and his talent to deliver a rich and rewarding listen.

A Slice From The Past
From A Slicce To A Draw
Review: Rocking up to the Slices Of Life imprint in fine fettle as always, John Tejada drops this sturdy three-tracker that draws on his classic floor filling approach as exercised on Playhouse et al over the years. "Times Like This" shivers with a minimal twitch, but the sounds come through full-bodied as playful synth hits and freaky samples make for a prime cut of micro house goodness. "A Slice From The Past" packs a more dubby outlook, with aqueous chord reverberations forming the core of the track around which slender rhythms unwind, while "From A Slice To A Draw" gets into a deeper kind of house throwdown with moody stabs and a crisp beat that will find favour with all manner of spinners.

We Can Pretend
Now We're Here
Review: Described by Kompakt as "a somnambulistic two-tracker that delivers more bang for the buck", John Tejada returns to the Cologne label with a new 12" primed for the dancefloor. We Can Pretend shows the LA-based Tejada might be looking to apply the new found interest in modular synthesis shown on his 2012 LP The Predicting Machine to the muscular techno he's founded his reputation on. Taking the form of two vocal tracks, one featuring former collaborator Kimi Recor and the other Morgan Alexander, the abiding feeling you get from the title track is 'perhaps this is what James Holden and John Talabot collaborating would sound like?'. There's a subtle poppishness to "We Can Pretend" that doesn't detract from the masterful sequencing, whilst "Now We're Here" is Tejada in classicist pumping US house mode.

Orbiter (Simian Mobile Disco mix - version 2)
Review: Lifting one of the cuts from his recent album for Kompakt, Simian Mobile Disco get enlisted to take John Tejada to task with two different remixes that highlight interesting paths for the British duo. On "Version 1" of "Orbiter", SMD take an overtly Artificial Intelligence approach to the track with a broken, stepping drum machine rhythm that used to be so typical for techno, redolent with plush synthesisers from drawn out notes to punchy stabs all harmonizing in a wondrous melancholy. "Version 2" sees them strapping the same core ingredients to a driving but deep house template, with the same early electronica references leading the way into transcendental dancefloor abandon.

Review: After just a short time since his Parabola LP for German powerhouse Kompakt, John Tejada returns to the Cologne label with more of his refined and satisfying melodic techno. As a producer with many different strings to his bow, his work for the label represents his safest and most accessible side, gently bouncing along on fluffy synthesisers and clean drum patterns, yet there's still space for some adventure as on the beatless, arpeggiated wonder of "An Ounce Of Perception". "Radio Channel" follows an equally engrossing ambient path, but by and large the album stays locked into a cosy and thoroughly comforting kind of tech house.

John Tejada - "Digital People"
David Joseph - "Latenight"
Review: Vinyl only project Lonesome Hero is a new collective comprised of techno artists who bow down to the mighty wax and are apparently "tired by the throw-away celebrity that modern techno seems to be going through". Their debut release comes in the form of "Digital People", a John Tejada track that originally featured in Dan Bell's Tresor mix from 2000 that somehow doesn't appear to have aged at all. Grooving, simple techno at its most vibrant, it plays with classic synth patterns and rolling congas. On the flip, Germany's David Joseph contributes "Latenight", with shuffling hats and a funk-fuelled loop in the spotlight. Both sides showcase great work from Lonesome Hero and set the bar for future releases from the fledgling imprint.

Sweat (On The Walls) (Donnacha Costello remix)
Review: Tejada's seminal 2004 acid thumper "Sweat (On The Walls)" is revisited by Poker Flat with two shiny new remixes from Martin Landsky and Donnacha Costello. Poker Flat regular Landsky adorns the A Side with a remix that tones down proceedings to a deep house bump that retains the distinctive synth buzz and lackadaisical female vocals but wraps them in a contemporary ice cool sheen. For those unfamiliar with Tejada's original which sound tracked many a night of warehouse debauchery, Poker Flat include the track in all it's acidic glory on the B Side before Donnacha contributes the finest offering here with a descent into the depths of dark acid throb aided by the metallic twist of additional rusted synth lines that oscillate with lysergic intent as the track gathers a brilliant momentum. Top release.
