808 The Bassqueen (Queen Of Bass mix)
808 The Bassqueen (extended Loop)
808 The Bassqueen (Dubstar'z shorthack)
Review: First of all, wow, how did this one already turn a quarter of a century old? It still sounds as wildly inventive now as it did back then and is fully deserving of this reissue. '808 The Bassqueen' is a truly mesmerising sonic journey that pushes the boundaries of electronic music with Villalobos's trademark blend of minimal techno and experimental soundscapes. He crafts a hypnotic and immersive mix of intricate rhythms, pulsating basslines, and deft synth textures that defy categorization and showcase Villalobos's mastery of groove and his ability to captivate listeners with subtle yet powerful sonic manipulations. This is the sound of a true visionary at work.

Baby (12:02)
Hansup (2:21)
Review: **RAUM REPRESS** Although Ricardo Villalobos has already appeared on Raum Musik under the RiRom moniker together with Roman Flugel, the Baby EP is his first full release for the label. The title track sees a firm kick and wood block snares forming the backbone for a drifting piano chord and sensual vocals which lead to a climax of delightfully glitchy vocoder. On the flip, "hansup" takes on a tougher groove, as sprung bass and minimal house stabs are joined by ethereal chords and twisted vocal samples.

Review: We're never short of new Ricardo Villalobos material and he's generous with his time as a mixer, but this project offers something different from the Chilean mad scientist of minimal. A Mountain Of One are a duo who deal in Balearic-leaning pop with a subtle charm and an adventurous spirit, and they initially approached Villalobos for a single remix of one of their tracks. As a fan of their sound, Villalobos ran with the project and it wound up as a full remix album of seven different versions. On the earlier tracks Ricardo takes a surprisingly light touch, while the later stages find us knee deep in the mesmerising roll of his minimal house, shot through with dubbed out ingredients from the original songs. It's surprising and satisfying in equal measure, showing Villalobos at his best and quite the scoop for A Mountain Of One.

Review: In the sprawling tendrils of minimal mastery Ricardo Villalobos has attached his name to, it's not always easy to pick out the stone cold classics. 2003 album Alcachofa is, however, a stand out moment from his career when he proved to be more than just a club 12" artist. Sure, the record is mainly driven by house rhythms, but this was a demonstration of the creative power within the minimal approach and Villalobos could get creative more than most. Originally released on Playhouse and now repressed on four 12"s by Perlon, it's a fitting tribute to a landmark record, now with added tracks from the accompanying Alcachofa Tools 12".

After a couple of quiet years Ferro's VBX label returns with a bang, as the esteemed Dutch minimal producer links up with none other than Ricardo Villalobos for a run of 'Ferric' jams. Enlightened souls should have some idea of what to expect here, as Ferro's snappy grooves collide with Villalobos' meandering sound collages to create psychoactive termites geared towards twisting out the dancefloor good and proper. This is proper minimal, with the percussion chiselled into fine clicks and pops to leave more space for the trippy elements to weave their magic. The quality comes assured from this new pairing, hopefully paving the way for more collaborations in the future.

En Suma (13:01)
Murmullo De Los Vientos (12:59)
Review: Originally recorded over 10 years ago, Hearing Colors present a reissue of two extended minimal works from Ricardo Villalobos and Washington Miranda. For those who value the power of extended, reduced forays into the outer realms of the dancefloor, there's a lot of power to draw from these tracks. The A-side is more forthright, thanks to little more than a click woodblock hit which drives the groove forwards, while 'Murmullo De Los Vientos' takes on a subtler, even more hypnotic quality with a voice (presumably Miranda's) guiding us through the soundscape.

En Suma (13:01)
Murmullo De Los Vientos (12:57)
Review: The latest missive from the recently reactiviated Hearing Colors label mines the archives of minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos, offering up two tracks recorded with fellow Chilean Washington Miranda a decade ago. Villalobos has played both tracks extensively in his DJ sets over the years, but this is the first time they've been released. A-side 'En Suma' is a typically wonky and wayward slab of off-kilter, early morning minimalism, with lo-fi electronic pulses, glitchy noises and Miranda's drowsy, multi-tracked vocals rising above a deep sub-bass line and crunchy, shuffling beats. Flip-side 'Murmullo De Los Vientos' is percussively bolder, heavier and denser, with snaking, echo-laden clarinet solos and layered vocal snippets providing a typically trippy, emotive focal point. Top stuff all told.

Review: Tripmastaz has been on a steady rise in the realm of Berlin-rooted minimal techno, landing on labels like M_nus and working with everyone from Guti to DJ Sneak, but this collaboration undoubtedly takes the cake. Partnering with the mighty Villalobos on his own Respect The Craft label, Tripmastaz shows us just why we should be paying attention, as he draws Ricardo into some of the most incisive club cuts he's put his name to in a fair while. From the hip-hop flex courtesy of SNVRS on 'Rise' to the wild jazzy skronk of 'Mastardo', there's a loose and freaky party energy to these cuts which gels so well with Villalobos' trademark trippiness.

Maher Daniel - "Analogue Future" (12:06)
Review: Some two years after the first part of their collaborative EP series hit record stores, Ricardo Villalobos and Maher Daniel have finally delivered volume three. In keeping with their previous joint excursions, epic A-side 'Periodica' is gently dark, feverish and mind-altering, with deep and drowsy Rhodes chords, bleeping electronics and trippy noises clustering around a typically off-kilter, bass-heavy Villalobos style groove (for all his faults, the Chilean can programme drums better than almost anyone else). Also impressive is Maher's flipside solo cut 'Analogue Future', an arguably rhythmically straighter and tougher affair in which a mind-mangling groove comes laden with broken computer sounds, freaky electronic glitches, occasional guitar riffs and dubbed-out vocal snippets.

Andrew Weatherall - "Fourteen" (7:52)
Ricardo Villalobos - "Fourteen" (remix) (12:57)
Review: Last year DisDat dipped into Andrew Weatherall's archive of unreleased music and unleashed 'Y.W Eleven', a deliciously chuggy, druggy, synth-heavy affair that sounded like the late producer's take on 'Enjoy The Silence'-era Depeche Mode after a fistful of hallucinogenic mushrooms. 'Y.W Fourteen', a kind of sequel mined from the same source, is a little breezier and quietly Balearic in tone, with attractively fluttering synth lines bubbling away atop a crunchy, mid-tempo electro beat and intergalactic electronics. The accompanying remix comes from the effervescent Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully re-imagines the track as a rubbery, bass-heavy chunk of locked-in dancefloor minimalism in his distinctively wonky-but-funky, otherworldly style.

His second album Alcachofa was an underground smash that introduced us all to a brand new take on minimal, and he had already laid down the blueprint for super mega long tunes with his epic 15 minute plus Fizheuer Zieheuer in 2006. This second reissue clears up some of the quality issues with the first and means all seven of the idiosyncratic tunes shine. They are string, stripped back by dynamic techno grooves with Latin percussion and fizzing static, tripped out sine waves and modulated synth patterns that will never be bettered.

Buffalo Demon (feat Alog) (9:57)
Who Are You? (feat Jorge Gonzalez) (8:58)
Review: A return to Raum Musik for Ricardo Villalobos arrives with the Chilean in the midst of one of his most creative production streaks. Who Are We lands before a mooted Vilod LP on Perlon from Villalobos and Max Loderbauer and after remixes for Honest Jon's and a contribution to the Aira Series from Roland and Rawax. It is of course his second 12" for Raum following the classic Baby from 2012 and these two new productions find him in a collaborative mood. "Buffalo Demon" features Rune Grammofon duo Alog whilst the title track pairs Villalobos up with compatriot Jorge Gonzalez. Both are superb, but "Who Are You?" is Villalobos channelling his weirder side and that's how we like our Ricardo tracks.

Neunachi (13:10)
Detrant (12:54)
Review: By now, we should know what to expect from Chilean minimalist Ricardo Villalobos, namely eccentric, off-kilter rhythms subtly influenced by his south American heritage, smooth but impactful bass, a smattering of weird electronic noises and mangled vocal samples pulled from the depths of an imagined K-hole. You get that in spades on 'Neunachi', the 13-minute lead cut from his latest Rawax double-header. It's classic Villalobos with a nightmarish twist - all backwards vocal samples, brain-melting rhythmic elements and subtle shifts of sonic emphasis. Flipside 'Detrant' is no less odd, though the skittish machine beats underpinning the collage of South American samples and wayward noises is pretty sturdy and straightforward. Of course, the track itself is anything but straightforward, but that's always been a big part of Villalobos's early morning allure.

Review: Following the skittering, syncopated arrangements and left-handed excursions of 'Aslohop' and 'Detrant' back in September, Ricardo returns to Rawax with two more broken rhythms. 'Neunachi' is a classic Villalobos wonky shuffer with off-grid kicks and a rainbow of wet, cavernous noises. Take away the demonic reverse vocals and you're in microhouse territory. 'Detrant' is a much more driven affair, up-tempo and thicker, electro kicks off-set by a far-away chant. Each cut going the full nine yards; if ever we've had time to truly lock in to Ricardo's famously enduring grooves, it's right now. Neun out of ten.

Review: Earlier in the year, Chilean minimal maestro Ricardo Villalobos reached an agreement with Rawax for the long-established label to release a series of singles and, more remarkably, a digital-only, hour-long track called 'Matsu'. This brown, marbled vinyl 12" is the first in the sequence of singles to hit stores and contains two typically lengthy workouts. Lead cut 'Aslohop' leads the way, with Villalobos once again delivering entrancing action built around oddly programmed, distinctively swung South American drum hits, curious noises and a hypnotic, undulating bassline. Flipside 'Detrand' is an even more spaced-out and druggy affair, with various barely audible samples subtly rising and falling for 21 minutes atop another deliciously out-there rhythm track.

Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

Review: We were hugely impressed by the first part of Ricardo Villalobos and Daniel Maher's collaborative EP series, which naturally saw them play to their strengths while offering up distinctive tracks that stood out from the crowd. Predictably they're at it again on EP number two. A-side "Changed" is particularly potent, with the pair peppering a typically wonky and minimalist but also pleasingly percussive group with trippy, effects-laden spoken word snippets and echoing, spaced-out dub techno style melodic motifs. Flipside "Periodico" is a slightly more forthright affair built around a sturdier, immaculately layered percussive groove, a deliciously simple one-note stab, drowsy chords and the duo's usual K-hole-friendly vocal samples.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos and Daniel Maher have both been involved in their fair share of collaborative releases over the years, so it's perhaps not that surprising to see them join forces. As the title suggests "Changes - Part 1" is the first volume in what promises to be a series of collaborative EPs. The title track delivers a reliable fusion of both producers' trademark minimalist styles, with a variety of oddly swung percussive elements and electronic blips weaving their way in and out of a wonky, late night grove. Flipside "Binary Function" is deeper and more hypnotic, despite the obvious level of sonic detail, with creepy chords and sampled jazz piano catching the ear.

Review: Fresh from remixing Afrobeat legend Tony Allen for Dekmantel, Ricardo Villalobos presents his first solo outing of 2019 - an epic double-pack containing four lengthy workouts in his signature off-kilter, minimalist techno style. First up is title track "Mandela Move", where chanted South African vocals weave their way in and out of hypnotic, funk-fuelled, glitch-driven drums that rank amongst Villalobos' boldest beats for some time. "Fontec" is deeper and subtly more melodious, with plenty of weirdo noises and some seriously chunky bass, while "Ectroscop" sees our Chilean hero brilliantly blend the swinging funk of breakbeat with his mind-altering percussion and production. Finally, "Beetglass" is as crunchy, bass-heavy and percussive as anything Villalobos has done to date.

Review: Three-quarters of the way through 2018, Ricardo Villalobos finally serves up his first solo release of the year. The Chilean has said very little about the two-tracker, merely serving up sound clips with no fanfare or fuss. Fans will enjoy "Wispa", with the producer's signature buried spoken word samples and intoxicating audio textures playing second fiddle to a driving kick-drum pattern and druggy, TB-303 style acid line. "909 Track" is, if anything, even bolder. While it's as hypnotic and trippy, the beats bounce, the acid lines pop and the main riff - a relentless, warehouse-friendly affair - drives the cut forward with restless energy. An impressive departure from his tried-and-tested blueprint.

Review: Toi Toi Musik's latest salvo is something of a biggie. It brings together two stalwarts of the South American minimal techno scene: Chilean wonk-meister Ricarco Villalobos and storied Venezuelan Argenis Brito. As you'd expect, there's a humid and intoxicating feel to A-side "El Malekon", a trippy, 13-minute workout marked out by druggy, manipulated and layered spoken word samples, intricate and subtly shifting percussion programming and a restless, sub-heavy bassline. The groove is pleasingly loose and wayward, something we say a lot about Villalobos' productions in particular. Flipside "Rikileaks" is a little more locked-in, utilizing a more sturdy, tech-house style drum rhythm, mind-bending electronic effects and a more booming bassline. Curiously, it also features a vocal whose lyric includes the immortal words: "these sandwiches keep me going".

It comes courtesy of two of techno's most storied producers, German studio wizard Butch and minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos. There's a pleasingly fluid and melodious feel to epic A-side "Funfviertel", with Butch and Villalobos peppering an off-kilter, stripped-back techno groove with starry chords, broken electronics and humid, kalimba style melodies. On flipside "Down", the duo opts for a far denser rhythm track, which boasts layered drum hits in Villalobos's traditional South American-influenced style. Throw in a pulsing but weighty bassline and a whole heap of stereo trickery and you have another locked-in late night delight.

The rock-solid rhythm of "Sullric" surely belongs to O'Sullivan while the rich, subtle layers of samples, tones and other such sonic decorations come straight from the Villalobos school of production. The two mixes on this 12" only have minor differences - whichever side you drop things will get considerably deeper than they were previously. Review: Tony Allen's "Asiko", the leading tune on his 1999 LP Black Voices, has been a favourite of our regardless of impeding remixes, reworks, or reissues. It's still a pinnacle of the future jazz movement, blowing everything else out the water in the process. Rightfully, Holland's Dekmantel have decided to resurrect its timeless qualities and to give German-Chilean legend Ricardo Villalobos the tools to deliver some reinterpretations. Thanks to Honest Jon's Records, the two have already worked together, and Villalobos' ritualistic percussion has proven to work wonders next to Allen's legendary drumming and arrangmements. In short, it's as if they were made for each other - two ends of the spectrum that merge beautifully. The firs remix is moody, funky, and absolutely lit, banging out hypnotic drums over deep bass and glitch sonics, while the second part strips the beats out in favour of more wide-eyed melodics, infused with a futuristic style of jazz that is prone to opening minds. Review: The productions of Chilean minimal maestro Ricardo Vilalobos have always been a little more jazzy and funk-fuelled than many will admit, though these elements - alongside the brilliance of his South American inspired drum programming - have come to the fore in recent times. They're certainly in evidence across the four fine tracks that make up Empirical House. Check, for example, the looped double bass, slack-tuned kicks and snares and woozy vibraphone flourishes of opener "Widodo", or the undulating, almost tropical melody lines and glitchy, outer-space grooves of "Bakasecc". Best of all is the title track, an unflinchingly trippy, woozy and borderline Balearic chunk of minimal house brilliance.

Amnesia (13:39)
Amnesia Beats (12:20)
Review: Here is one artist who has always stuck by what he does best. Ricardo Villalobos is no ordinary house or techno producer; he's a man with a simple vision who has preferred to carry on stripping techno down to its bare essentials. This new collaboration with Argenis Brito for the Melisma Limited label is Villalobos at his best: "Amnesia" rattles its bubbly, complex beat structure over diluted melodies and a Hispanic vocal sway, whereas "Amnesia Beats" acts like the dub-not-dub mix, a tribal dance structure with little care for big pads or storming chords. What these guys do best is work with as few elements as possible and take them to their very limits.

Review: Given that Ricardo Villalobos was one of a handful of guest producers who featured on Oren Ambarchi's recent Hubris album - a krautrock-influenced minimalist techno exploration that also boasted contributions from Jim O'Rourke and Mark Fell, amongst others - it seems fitting that he's been roped in to provide two new remixes. The Chilean's contribution to the album was largely rhythm-based, and his two lengthy Variations - each stretched across one side of wax - promote undulating, heads-down dancefloor hypnotism above all else. Naturally, his drum programming and use of subtle stylistic shifts is as on-point as ever, with Ambarchi's original textures being manipulated into mind-altering new shapes.

Easy Lee (10:13)
Dexter (9:07)
Review:  Alcachofa, Ricardo Villalobos's 2013 debut LP for Playhouse, is rightly considered a classic of the minimal style and there remains a clamour for a repress today despite the fact one arrived only four years ago. Whilst that is nowhere in sight, the Chilean has elected to pick out two highlights of the album for re-release on his irregular label Sei Es Drum. Any self-respecting techno scholar should be more than familiar with the wistful abstraction of "Easy Lee" and the romantic minimalist bliss of "Dexter". Expect to hear these out again in the clubs over the coming months.

Ricardo Villalobos - "Rabbit Over" (12:15)
Oskar Szafraniec - "Vitality" (feat Infinite Livez) (8:51)
Review: Germany's Rawax, aside from its reissue offshoot, has usually released up and coming artists in the house and techno domains but the label are back with something pretty special for the first chapter of their newly crowned Aira series. Ricardo Villalobos, a man who needs no introduction in the minimal techno game and who sells clubs out week in and week out all over the world, drops "Rabbit Over", a familiarly itchy Villalobos groove with intricate melodic patterns and a driving beat structure. On the flip, Oskar Szafraniec's "Vitality" is similarly stripped and jagged around the edges, a monstrous bassline dominating its bottom-end. Another fine slice of Rawax and an impressive evolution from the label!

Review: Using the Turkish psychedelic project Insanlar as a jump off point, Honest Jon's have enlisted Ricardo Villalobos to turn out one of his grandiose remix projects that gels so naturally with more exotic sound sources. The original of "Kime Ne" is already an enchanting, Moog-infused groover rich with traditional vocals, and then Mr Villalobos locks the ingredients in for a typically cosmic ride into stripped and hypnotic house territory, letting the lutes intertwine with dusty reams of percussion using that alchemists touch that could only come the man himself. The remix spreads itself over two sides of wax, leaving one side of the double pack free for a fetching etching as well.

Review: Making a rare excursion outside of his Perlon familiarities, Ricardo Villalobos contributes to Einzelkind's Proper Traxx imprint with two upfront groovers that keep the energy levels up without compromising on the minimal maven's hyper-focused attention to detail, not to mention his love of a cheeky sample or two. The rhythm stays consistent on both sides, shuffling in a micro house arrangement for lovers of twitchy funk everywhere, while the oddball speech and licks from recognisable disco classics keep things interesting in the midst of the extended grooves. This is as DJ-friendly as you could ever wish contemporary Villalobos to be, and it should keep stripped down dancefloors shaking long into the morning.

Balam
Review: With a dizzying catalogue of work behind both of them, Ricardo Villalobos and Butch form a partnership for the former's Sei Es Drum and the results are nothing short of startling. "Up" is a show-stopping track through and through, as a delirious synth rises constantly over some vintage 80s tom fills for a truly mind-bending experience. "Balam" by way of stark contrast is a stripped down tech house snake, putting some bubbling acid on to simmer while chopping up an intricate and persistent beat. It's high quality leftfield house for those who like their ideas fresh and freaky.

Review: Established last year, Lisbon label Assemble Music has been making ripples in minimal circles with their output from Dorian Paic, Daze Maxim and St. Joseph. This fourth release should engender something akin to a wave of appreciation as Ricardo Villalobos continues his fruitful collaborative streak with the two track Veric 12" in conjunction with Vera Heindel. The pair are known to frequently share the decks at her home town club in Frankfurt and the chemistry between them translates to the studio, with both "Rambutan" and "Take Me" masterful examples of extended, hypnosis inducing minimalist productions.

Two Kids Set Off
Review: The final vinyl volume of tracks from Ricardo's Dependent & Happy LP arrives and like the previous three releases, demand will surely outstrip supply. Adhering to the adage "let's save the best till last" Perlon cull our favourite two tracks from the album here in "Precox" and "Two Kids Set Off", the former's bassline takes on a cat purring quality as Villalobos locks into a stripped back groove that seems to dip into infinity before taking a pleasant deviation towards mid point obscurity. On the flip, the taut double bass strings and strange televisual sampling present the Chilean at his most willfully adventurous. Already prey to the Discogs vultures - don't sleep on these!

Review: By his legendary standards of messiness, Ricardo Villalobos seems to have calmed down a bit of late. Perhaps it's related to spending more time in the studio, because Dependent & Happy is his first solo full-length for four years. It's a pretty good set, all told, delivering warmer, groovier minimal tracks than we've come to expect from the skeletal, perma sweating Chilean. Notably, there are more melodies, looser drums - some of which have a smooth swing that suggests he's rediscovering his Mojo - and even the odd track featuring rolling electric pianos and a fuller sound (see the devilishly funky "Samma" and Clavinet-boasting "Tu Actilud").

Review: The final chapter of Senor Villalobos' third full-length LP came in the form of an A and B side - two tracks which end Dependent & Happy in true Villalobian fashion. "Defixia" is an irresistibly skippy trail of gentle snares and even more amiable melodies. The closing track, "Koito" continues this new found harmonic style by Ricardo, adding a hefty dosage of sub-aquatic synth bleeps all complete with his trademark percussion.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos's third full-length (unless you count his Fabric mix and Re: ECM project with Max Loderbauer) entitled Dependent & Happy had been eagerly anticipated since its announcement early this year, and on its vinyl release finds its 14 tracks split up across 5x12" singles. The results are as sublime as you would expect from the master of minimal; "Tu Actitud" opens with its half-spoken vocals and jaunty electric bass, "Timemorf" continues with its minimal Chilean rhythms, while "Grumax" is the undisputed highlight - a combination of tense, sprung bass and discordant strings arranged in the way only Villalobos can.

Review: The second of two EPs collecting Ricardo Villalobos's third album Dependent & Happy saw the producer go further in with the tunnelling grooves, with six tracks that take an explicitly darker turn than the first EP. "Zuipox" consists of micro bass and skewed vocal echoes, while "Kehaus" takes things in as ravey a direction as the producer goes with its insistent bass stab and rolling percussion and "Die Schwarze Massai" takes a more syncopated approach with it's complex rhythm and dreamy chords. "Put Your Lips" takes an insistent vocal snippet and welds a solid 4/4 groove to it with very little else. "Samma" however is the real killer, a melancholic combination of spring loaded percussion and chords warped out of shape.

Emilio (2nd Minimoonstar)
Review: Ricky V's return to Perlon this year! That's correct, some four years on from his last appearance for the Frankfurt label, Villalobos returns with a two track 12" housed in those distinctive Perlon colours that precede the release of the Chilean's fifth studio LP later this summer. While Ricardo has been in experimental mood of late - see the Shangaan Electro remix or the Re: ECM album he completed with Max Loderbauer - both tracks here are very much in the canon of trademark Villalobos productions. Lead track "Any Ideas" plays around with the repetition of a vocal sample over stretched out textures that veer into mind bend territory whilst the pitter patter groove at times sounds like a ping pong game in action. On the flip "Emilio (2nd Minimoonstar)" is reminiscent of a ZX Spectrum having a meltdown in time to a minimal bump.
