Pendulum (4:17)

Review: We'd encountered Scott Morgan - also known as Loscil - not too long ago via a gorgeous string of releases on a variety of boutique labels dealing in earthly electronics and abstract sound design. He returns to the exclusive Jaz Records with the second instalment of Sine Studies, and the two pieces of music are every bit as magical and mystical as you'd imagine them to be. "Pendulum" is a beautiful sing-song made up of placid synth tones dangling in the air and moving back and forth, whereas "Serpens" strips the movement down to a slow-burning concoction of drones and ambience. It's surreal, ethereal and exactly the sort of thing we like to hear at this time of the year. Solid.

Review: Since 2001 Scott Morgan has released a wealth of material, largely on his spiritual home of Kranky as well as in legion with Destroyer and Thee Crusaders. His thirteenth Loscil album is another serene body of work that deals in harmonious tones, picking up the baton from the likes of Fennesz and seeking to express such melancholic orchestrations through a unique set of voices. Indeed there are human vocal tones within the processed drifts of melody that mark out Sea Island, but they're on a level pegging with anchorless synths and subtle peaks of interference that mark out the character of Morgan's particular kind of ambience.

Review: Canada's Scott Morgan has been making cinematic soundscapes on the Kranky label for almost fifteen years now, and while others at the time were focussing on dancefloors and beats, this guy was in a world of his own, one that's become more and more popular in recent years. "Plume", his fourth album from 2006, is here released for the first time on vinyl, and it's a truly visceral experience, where Morgan's use of sonics and distortion is manipulated into giving an impression of electricity and industrial power. "Rorscach", for instance, feels like a shot of static running through your body and mind, and both "Steam" and "Bellows" are surrounded by a layer of fuzz, while still retaining a rich musicality and instrumentation. It's a 'zone-out' album, and it's the perfect kind of score for your more meditative hours. Excellent stuff.

Review: Another superior ambient album delivered to you by Kranky Records. 'Plume' is the fourth album from electronic composer and visual artist Scott Morgan aka Loscil from Vancouver. Improvised organic instrumentation, including guitar and vibraphone entwine with computer generated electronic sequences, analogue with digital, to create an extremely serene and spiritual sonic marriage.

Review: Sound designer turned ambient explorer Scott Morgan is one of Kranky's longest-serving artists. He first appeared on the American label under his now familiar Loscil alias way back in 2001. Monument Builders is his eleventh solo full-length, and sees him effortlessly flitting between icy, slow-burning ambience, analogue soundtrack salvos (see the John Carpenter-ish "Red Tide", a bubbly blast of Cold War paranoia), cinematic tension-builders ("Straw Dogs"), throbbing, post-drone soundscapes ("Anthropocene"), and bittersweet mood pieces (the melancholic brilliance of "Weeds"). As you'd perhaps expect from a man whose day job involves scoring computer games, the album is hugely atmospheric and immersive.

Review: Not all albums need a concept, but inspiration helps. In the case of this first collaborative full-lenth from Brock Van Wey and Scott Morgan, it seems to be Milton's "Paradise Lost" and the words of Thegony Hesiod. A touch grandiose, perhaps, but there's something beautifully intense, glacial and otherworldly - hallmarks of both men's work - about Erebus. Built around the twin attractions of wide-eyed synthscapes and production that maximizes space - sparse elements created to sound enormous, as if recorded in a cathedral - the album seemingly shimmers with ambient simplicity. There are reflective moments - see the tumbling pianos of opener "Aether" - but for the most part it's a spine-tingling journey into the touchy-feely potential of drone.

Review: Since joining the label at the turn of the millennium, Scott Morgan AKA Loscil has become one of the admirably experimental imprint's most prolific artists. "Equivalents" is Morgan's ninth album for the label and sees him offer up eight meditations on a hazy, spaced-out theme. It's a slow-burn affair, where processed melodic elements, held-note chords and drone style aural textures slowly move across the sound space. It's a formula that guarantees goodness from start to finish, with the pulsing "Equivalent 3", ghostly "Equivalent 6", Mr Cloudy-esque "Equivalent 2" and the becalmed and poignant "Equivalent 8" standing out.

Review: Lawrence English's album Colours of Air on Kranky finds him hooking up with fellow composer loscil aka Scott Morgan. The pair find a perfect sweet spot between their respective backgrounds as they work up absorbing ambient sounds from a collection of recordings of a century-old pipe organ that lives in the Old Museum in Brisbane, Australia. The source recordings were then processed, transformed, and elevated into these absorbing soundscapes where timbre, spatial fluctuation and swelling drones all sweep you off your feet. It is a truly original and captivating piece of work.

Review: Heavyweight ambient partnerships don't come much bigger than Lawrence English and Loscil, who pool their considerable resources into this majestic album for Kranky. If you're familiar with Loscil's shimmering, sweetly synthetic sound, you'll be very happy with the grandiose blooms of undulating colour bleeding out of 'Cyan', while English's affinity for subtlety comes to the fore on 'Aqua'. The approach for the album was centred around a century-old pipe organ at the Old Museum in Brisbane, but of course there's been a lot of work done on the original sound sources. There's no great tussle between the respective artists - their sound practices merge beautifully, rendering an essential addition to both of their considerable catalogues.

Review: Scott Morgan has made rather a lot of fine music over the years, and little better than his seventh album as Loscil, Coast/range/arc. Here it returns on vinyl after a nine-year absence, complete with a fresh bonus cut recorded in the same period, the Biosphere-esque arctic ambience that is 'Black Tusk (descent)'. Sonically, it fits snugly into the rest of the album, which offers the clearest distillation to date of Morgan's trademark sound. Full of beautiful, icy and slowly unfurling compositions that tend towards the meditative, the set is notable for Morgan's seemingly innate ability to craft immersive soundscapes out of a mixture of hazy drone textures, gaseous electronic chords, soft-touch melodies, atmospheric field recordings and simmering, near cinematic musical movements.

Review: Second time around for Scott Morgan AKA Loscil's seventh album, Coast/range/arc, which first hit record stores way back in 2011. It's an album worth revisiting - or checking for the first time, for that matter - since it offers a near perfect distillation of the ambient producer and sound artist's now trademark sound. Full of beautiful, icy and slowly unfurling compositions that tend towards the meditative, the set is notable for Morgan's seemingly innate ability to craft immersive soundscapes out of a mixture of hazy drone textures, gaseous electronic chords, soft-touch melodies, atmospheric field recordings and simmer, near cinematic musical movements. This reissue also includes the previously unheard 'Black Tusk (Descent)', a deliciously woozy piece of Biosphere-esque arctic ambience.

Review: Scott Morgan's latest immersive ambient deep dive as Loscil has its origins in a three-minute composition performed by a 22-piece orchestra from Budapest. Morgan pressed this recording to vinyl, then scratched and sampled it within an inch of its life. Each of these samples was then used (and abused) in a variety of ways, before being shaped into a suite of brand-new tracks. The process certainly worked, because Clara is simply superb: a collection of alternately melancholic, gently uplifting and becalmed soundscapes whose simmering orchestral origins are only noticeable if you know the back story. It's a stunning set all told and a genuinely involving and immersive ambient excursion.
