Review: Dam Funk is the true ambassador of West Coast boogie in the modern era, and his dreamy touch is unmistakable. Parisian funkateer David Zylberman knows what's up, and so he's reached out to Dam for some input on this silky smooth single which takes us into the heart of LA. The result is two cuts tipped way, way back for the smoothest of rides, all mid tempo 808 groove and lingering, mellow synth chords. If you were a fan of the breakthrough Toeachizown album which brought Dam Funk to wider attention, you're going to love this record.

The sound of each individual's voice is thought to be entirely unique. Like a fingerprint, its composition is distinct, nuanced, and one-of-a-kind.

While all this is true, it's a concept that has been challenged in recent times by the refinement of AI powered systems which are able to emulate voices to a tee. And not only voices, for that matter, but whole styles and aesthetics: an AI-generated facsimile of Drake and The Weeknd's voices titled "Heart on My Sleeve" made the rounds this year and was even submitted for Grammy consideration. It's a legitimate song and a proposal that does not only keep legal departments busy, but also allows for myriad reflections on originality and, bluntly, the future of music. But as the future of music is a broad and daunting topic to speculate on, we want to hone in on what's been prefaced above: issue #28 of Zweikommasieben centres the voice as means of expression, and wants to expand on what is meant by that: it's not only what is heard, but also why a voice is used and by whom. This latest edition considers what it means to voice, and its physical, societal and political dimensions.

Notes: As the team behind Zweikommasieben takes its latest edition to ponder the essence of longevity, they arrive at several questions which they have worked through with their featured artists and writers. On the one hand, artistic traditions might be useful to lean on, to conjure an image and an accompanying gut feeling of a recent past. On the other hand, investing in the knowledge of traditions might allow to bend and twist them to explore ones own expression. Whether that is consciously incorporating sounds from the past to evoke historical resonances, as Courtesy did for her most recent album Violence of the Moodboard, or propelling the presentation of music forward into new traditions, such as in the work of Xzavier Stone who has recently started pairing scent with sound during his live performances. In a similar manner, Lateena Plummer proposes new traditions for a dancehall scene which finally makes space for marginalized identities and voices, a purpose directly derived from her experiences in the past, which she openly speaks about in conversation with Anna Froelicher.

When Beatriz de Rijke decided to work under the moniker Bea1991, she did this as a conscious anchoring in time, with the latter part of the name being a direct reference to her year of birth. One can imagine that a birthdate might be one of the only constants in life: one that will forever connect someone to a certain generation, and maybe even to a global cultural zeitgeist.

A few years ago ZVEX Effects released the Candela Vibrophase, a candle-powered vibrato/phaser machined from solid brass and glass that used a mix of 1800s technology (a Sterling heat engine) and 60s/70s audio circuitry to create a lovely swirling effect. After numerous requests to put that sound into a guitar pedal, they came up with a way of dramatically broadening the spectrum of textures available using the original circuitry from the Candela.

It's presented to you here as the Vibrophase, a five-knob four-stage phaser that creates phase and vibrato nuances never heard before. Five knobs! Count 'em! Speed sweeps from maddeningly slow to puppy dog flippy, vibrato/phase sweeps from, erm, you'll figure that out, feedback sends the output back through the phaser again to raise intensity, and there are controls for the top end and bottom end of the sweep so you can completely tailor the sound to your song.

Review: Exarde clocks up its 15th outing here with another bit of brilliantly direct to dancefloor techno tackle from Zuul. There is a sense of celestial mystery to his opener 'The Devil's Wanted In Here' in the chrome-plated melodies while the drums are pure electro-funk. 'Phazer Quest' ups the ante with some prickly acid spraying about the face of the silvery metallic drums and sustained chords and moon the flip comes the rasping bass and slapping drum funk of 'Talkatron' while a more circuitous route is taken by the searching synths of closer 'Nieur Acid.'

Review: This expansive 70-track collection spans the Dragon Age game series, including songs from Dragon Age: Origins (2009), Dragon Age II (2011), and Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014) throughout discs 1-3. As a bonus, the fourth disc features seven tracks chosen from DLC plus an additional nine fan-favorite bard songs from Dragon Age: Inquisition. Deluxe package features all-original artwork by Dragon Age concept director Ramil Sunga and lead UX artist Danny Richardson, created exclusively for this album set. The beautifully detailed artwork presents a pictorial timeline following the lore of the Dragon Age series, beginning at the dawn of the golden city, throughout the city's fall and culminating in its re-emergence as the black city, seat of the old gods.

Review: 18 months after a fantastic launch instalment courtesy of the mighty Danny Krivit, Mr Bongo's Edits series returns. This time round, it's Manchester legend and 'E Soul Cultura' specialist Luke Una at the controls. On the A-side he handles 'Love Games', an obscure slice of mid-80s South African disco by Thandi Zulu and The Young Five, cannily focusing on the warm, gently funky groove and the track's spacey synth solos. Over on the flip, the Electric Chair co-founder takes on Lionel Pillay's percussion, synth-and-organ classic 'Plum', stretching out the most dancefloor friendly sections before unleashing waves of solos and the original's saucer-eyed, sun-splashed instrumentation.

Review: Los Angeles based powerviolence mob, Zulu, have been making waves in the hardcore scene over the past few years, thanks in no small part to the crushing power of their two EPs, 'Our Day Will Come', in 2019, and the 2020 follow up, 'My People...Hold On'. Combining blisteringly heavy bursts of grind-inspired hardcore, juxtaposed with everything from samples of classic R&B and soul to reggae cuts and momentous speeches from black history, there's a unique freshness to the band's approach, elevated by their ferocious anti-racist lyrics and sobering critiques of gentrification and white privilege. Their upcoming debut full-length, A New Tomorrow, promises to build upon the vision of their earlier releases with a self-produced melting pot of expansive, focused punk, and outsider influences from every facet of black culture. With guest vocal features from members of Soul Glo and Playytime; Zulu appear to be leading the charge for an entirely new wave of punk to come.

Review: Latin funk music's best and brightest recollector-reissuers Vampi Soul continue to do what they do best with this latest reissue of the debut self-titled album by Zulu. One of the last great albums of the first wave of Peruvian rock,and originally released in 1974, Zulu was infamous for its linking of psych-tinged rock with Afro-Latin American beats and folk pop. The enigmatic Zulu (real name Miguel Angel Ruiz Orbegoso) was best known during his lifetime as a member of the bands Traffic Sound and Los Nuevos Shain, but his only solo album commands a unique aura as a numinous rarity, immediately pre-dating his latter-career immersion in the religious community. Reissued for the first time with the collaboration of Zulu, including extensive liner notes and one extra track, the likes of 'Si en el cielo yo viviera', 'Laberintos' and 'Candela' are pastoral gems of folk-cumbia and salsa, playing back with a level of sensitivity and texture that could only be born of a worthy spirit.

Review: Elevated Senses is the new series from the prolific Berlin-based producer Todo Kunst aka Zug (aka Gruvaldo among many others), this time exploring such concepts with the third eye, premonitions, telepathy and other arcane subjects. On the A-side you've got the deep groove of 'Tercer Ojo' followed by the late night affair of 'Premonition' - both on a housey tip. Over on the flip is the subtle computer funk 'Telepatia' and finally 'Seres De Luz' is a contemplative IDM affair that's perfect for drifting beyond the afterhours.

Review: Roma Zuckerman investigates the intriguing idea of 'The Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality' on his new EP for Gost Zvuk. As is often the way with techno from Russia, this is evocative, sparse material with fizzing lo-fi details and hints of distant transmissions from long-lost worlds. 'Nightmare Forms' gets things underway in dubby and rolling fashion and elsewhere you have warped mind melters like 'Arzt' with their pulsing sonar signals, more crunchy and off-grid workouts like the trippy 'I Play Everyday'. There a more frozen techno landscapes like the icy '4CH005I' to complete what is a bold double album.

Review: Featuring music by Emmy Award-winning composer and musician Jeremy Zuckerman, Avatar: The Last Airbender - Book 1: Water expands his original compositions and employs a full orchestra for this long-awaited release of the score from the first season of the iconic animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The music sweeps listeners into the adventures of main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must defeat Fire Lord Ozai and end the Hundred Year War to restore balance to the Four Nations.
