Review: Basement Phil's Basement imprints proudly drop their first release in the form of a remix compilation - a rather unexpected format but nonetheless enticing! This is a 26-track monster release by Phillip Wells aka Basement Phil who put out some of the most forward-thinking hardcore and jungle back in the early 90's when all of this fuss began! As the title implies, the compilation is a retrospective of sorts, where tracks from the golden era of UK rave are reworked and rebooted, placed next to contemporary sounds form the hardcore continuum. If you're a love rof the jungle variety then this is definitely worth a listen - essential!

Razat has made an art form of distortion and saturation. The latter is what lends its name to this new eight-tracker on Saturate. After a fuzzy and textural opener the tumbling and brilliantly fluid rhythms of 'Overdrive' get you to the heart of the dance then 'Clipping' lurches backward and forwards on low-end oscillations and 'Bit Crush' closes the a-side with eye-watering hiss and fizz over crunchy drum slaps. Two further tunes on the flip find Razart manipulating sound and bass in his own unique way with two remixes adding extra bite to an already very useful EP.

Review: Although they don't always get the props they deserve, Suburban Base regulars Krome & Time were one of the most significant outfits of the early UK bass era, delivering a string of singles that mirrored wider musical developments between 1989 and '95. This fantastic, five-disc Anthology does a good job in charting that progression, beginning with the 'bleep and breaks' brilliance of 'The Rush (Dub Bass Mix)') (as Kromozone) and 'Fireball (VIP)' (as Timebase). From there on, it's a sprint through hardcore rave ('Into The Night', 'Virtual Reality VIP, and two takes on their most famous anthem, 'This Sound is For The Underground'), and jungle ('The Slammer VIP', 'Final Destination'). Throw in a clutch of cuts as Higher Level, some rarities and a handful of fresh remixes, and you have a genuinely essential retrospective.

Review: 20 years deep and Steve Jefroy remains a leading light in the field of melodic, pop-minded D&B. He's toasting the anniversary of his BCee alias with this four-disc box set which looks over his career for a wealth of highlights. There's soulful swooners like 'Spirals' featuring the vocals of Solah, and the nifty singalong 'Let Go Of Love' featuring DRS' dulcet tones. These vocal performances are a vital part of the BCee sound, focusing on songwriting within a breakbeat context and coming up trumps every time. The hits are spread all over these eight sides, and there's even some fresh remixes from the likes of Kiril and Tim Reaper, making this a damn fine celebration of a producer who by rights should be a household name in and out of the D&B scene.

The new album Long Distance indulges the esser-cited leitmotifs of the drum & bass arch-genre, such as halftime; Bungle flaunts the ability to tease out familiar emotions in the listener, without, however, succumbing to its same formalistic constraints (no, the snare does not always have to be on the second and fourth beats). Clean, plummy, hypnotic and verging on bursting, the likes of 'Unfold', 'Long Distance' and 'Caught Leaving' impress with their verging between light-footedness and controlled bassweight, as if to suggest this producer is constantly striving towards a perfection of the sound.

Review: While he may have released a multitude of singles since making his debut on Metalheadz way back in 1995, "Full Circle" is only James Spratling AKA J Majik's second album (his debut full-length, "Slow Motion", was released in 1997). It's a fitting title, all told, because the majority of the ten tracks on offer recall the kind of punchy-but-dreamy jungle/early D&B fusion that marked out Spratling's earliest releases. That means a succession of killer cuts that wrap deep space chords, ambient synths and heady electronic melodies around bustling, jungle style breakbeats and booming, mind-altering basslines. It's a giddy, unashamed blast from the past, but one that's certainly in keeping with the D&B scene's current wave of misty-eyed nostalgia.

Review: Finnish hip-hop duo Bombfunk MCs made a massive splash in 1999 when they dropped their debut album In Stereo. It sold well due to the success of its lead singles like 'Uprocking Beats' and 'Freestyler', which took after a mixture of big beat and b-boy raps for an effective semester of classes in the school of hip bangerology. This reissue by MOV reminds us, though, that there are plenty of greats left to be heard on the album, too, from 'Sky's The Limit' to '1,2,3,4'. A point of pride for the Finnish music scene, it's certainly not one to be missed for those seeking a complete collection of breaks records.

The main flavour is much a floatier, silky style that weaves between trancey sing-alongs such as 'Air I Breathe' to bigger clubbier cuts like 'Illuminate' by way of non-drum & bass adventures such as the twinkling Get Physical hip wriggles of 'Alone' and the Bicep-flexing cloud surfer 'Stratus'. Review: It would be fair to say that excitement has been building since Goldie announced the release of The Journey Man earlier this year. You see, the expansive, triple-vinyl full-length is the Metalheadz man's first album since 1998's patchy Saturnz Return, and is being trumpeted by those who've heard it in full as a triumphant return to form. It naturally features some sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self indulgent as the hour-long "Mother". Furthermore, Goldie has wisely delivered a set of high quality drum and bass that ticks numerous boxes - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk warmth - with a string of suitably impressive collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker) swinging by to ensure the set oozes soul.

Review: Astonishingly, a quarter of a century has now passed since The Prodigy released The Fat of the Land, the inspired rock-rave fusion opus that helped rocket the Essex combo towards superstardom and converted a whole generation of spotty indie kids to the joys of rambunctious rave music. It's certainly worthy of this limited-edition anniversary pressing, which comes on eye-catching silver-coloured vinyl. Of course, we all know the smash hits - the bustling, acid-flecked roll of 'Smack My Bitch Up', ultra-heavy 'Firestarter' and funky, low-slung 'Breathe' - but the set's lesser-celebrated moments, such as hip-hop jam 'Diesel Power', Meat Beat Manifesto-esque 'Serial Thrilla' and punky 'Fuel My Fire' have aged equally as well.
