Review: Given the uniqueness of his madcap and mind-altering trademark sound, the release of any new album from Tom Jenkinson AKA Squarepusher is big news. Given that his last new full-length landed four years ago, the arrival of Dostrotime has got an awful lot of experimentalists in a bit of a lather. Like many albums that have surfaced in the last couple of years, it was apparently inspired by the "novel, eerie, sublime silence of lockdown", with the title being a reference to "how time passed differently". Review: Dominick Martin's Shelflife series takes us back into the very core of Calibre over the past 20 years, finally sharing tracks which were previously only aired in his DJ sets. Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. Familiar names include Daniel Bell, Shy One, Willow, Peggy Gou, Midland, Will Saul and Ron Basejam, but there's also surprise inclusions like Tim Reaper and Comfort Zone teaming up for a signature jungle excursion. This is a heavyweight reflection of everything Phonica has represented for the past two decades, but equally a sign towards where they're heading in the future and it couldn't sound rosier.

Review: When Hospital Records launched some 16 years ago, it was primarily to focus on the more soulful side of drum & bass. While London Elektricity's imprint is now about so much more than that, many of its' releases still bristle with an expansive soulfulness. This mixed, mid-price, two-disc affair pays tribute to the label's soulful side, delivering sinewy, string-laden gems, vocal anthems, and liquid D&B classics from the likes of SPY, High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Phuturistix and, of course, London Elektricity. Who mixed it isn't revealed, but they've done a great job; both discs ripple with melody, emotion and, of course, skittering dancefloor rhythms. This is Fast Soul Music, after all.

Review: On Evolve, Nick Douwma has gone back to the future, offering up an album that giddily mines the music that inspired him to fall in love with electronic dance music in the first place. So, while it's undoubtedly a radio-friendly, 21st century big-room dance album, the collected tracks include nods to many classic dancefloor anthems (see 'Fine Day', an EDM-d&b re-make of the Opus III classic that also inspired Orbital's 'Halcyon'), crossover acts of old (the Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers), vintage hardcore and jungle, and 90s house. Review: It's been some three years since St Petersburg-based producer Bop impressed with his sophomore set, The Amazing Adventures of One Curious Pixel. Like that album, this belated follow-up for Hospital offshoot Med School gloriously joins the dots between hazy electronic fluidity, classic IDM, dreamy ambient textures and bouncy, off-kilter experimental D&B beats. It's a blend that makes for enjoyable listening, even when Bop is at his most challenging and experimental. He has a great way with melody, and even the album's darker, more bass-heavy moments - see the sub-heavy throb of "Charge Me" - come laden with drifting pads and intricate, eyes-wide-shut electronics.

More or less absent in a solo capacity since dropping the 2012 anthem Fear Not, Matt Gresham delivers Polyphony his sixth Logistics album in as many years for Hospital Records. Review: It's been roughly a year since Fabric turned to the world of Drum & Bass to service their excellent mix series (and a fine job Friction did on Fabriclive 70) so it's great news to see the London club welcome Anglo-Norse pair Calyx & Teebee into the fold for Fabriclive 76. Clocking in at 34 tracks deep, it's fair to say this mix showcases the pair's skills behind the decks (it was recorded using three) and really offers a detailed insight into the many flavours and shades of the genre. Naturally the mix features a healthy dose of original Calyx & Teebee material and the pair also includes cuts from the likes of Break, Ulterior Motive, DJ Friction and Blu Mar Ten as well as older tracks and a smattering of VIPs. Big!

Review: In their official biography, Technimatic describe their particular take on musically rich liquid D&B as "hyper-coloured". In many ways, it's an apt description. Certainly, there's a baggy vibrancy to this belated debut album, which is gloriously breezy and deliciously soulful from start to finish. There's an almost horizontal feel to the duo's classic blends of vintage jungle rhythms, drifting vocals - most notable on the beautiful "Looking For Dviversion", featuring the folksy voice of Lucy Kitchen - twinkling pianos, undulating strings and sun-bright chords. This kind of liquid jungle is always eminently listenable, but Andy Powell and Peter Rogers' particular take on the style is more cultured and mature than most. As a result, Desire Paths is an impressive and hugely enjoyable body of work.

Review: Given his links with liquid jungle pioneer Alex Reece, it's perhaps unsurprising that Barnet-based Utah Jazz is still pushing a fluid, deep and occasionally dreamy take on drum & bass. Portfolio, his fourth album, holds few surprises, but delivers the kind of shimmering, melodious goodness with which he's become famous over the last two decades. In truth, few do this kind of heady, wide-eyed D&B fare quite so well. Musically intricate and blessed with gentle strings, ear-pleasing chords, hazy vocal samples and - in the case of the brilliant, dubstep-influenced "MAM" - bundles of sun-kissed soul, Portfolio is a joyous collection of sun-ripe gems. If the sun's shining, it really comes into its own.

Consisting of both established names and rising talent, 15 Years Of Fokuz Recordings will wet the pants of most modern drum and bass lovers, touching on all styles of the genre and it's hard to pick out individual highlights such is the standard throughout. Any release that begins with a remix from the mighty Lenzman and ends with a cold rolling action of Lynx is a must!

Review: Under his now familiar Tokyo Prose alias, New Zealand-born Sam Reed has prospered in recent years, delivering a brand of warm, deep, musically rich drum and bass that recalls the glory days of liquid D&B. Presence is his debut album, and it expands a little on his trademark sound whilst retaining a becalmed, almost horizontal approach. Sure, many of the rhythms are punchy, but they're smothered in twinkling pianos, soulful vocals and chords straight out of the classic ambient playbook. Occasional forays into downtempo (see the delicious opener "16 Bar Cycles" and impeccable closing track "Dance With You") and post-dubstep territory only serve to enhance the immersive, laidback mood.

Review: While many producers tend to mellow with age, Brazilian-in-Bristol S.PY has taken the opposite approach. His early productions were expansive affairs, musically rich and often smothered in soaring strings, but his most recent album, Back To Basics Chapter 1, was altogether more robust and rolling with clear early jungle influences. This speedy follow-up - a partner piece, if you will - is similarly dark and atmospheric, whilst retaining his ear for melody and love of liquid rhythms. So while the majority of the material spits and pops to the rhythm of classic jungle breaks and surging basslines, there are hints of grandeur amongst the basement beats. "Stardust" and the "Inner City Life"-ish "Lost Orbit", in particular, are amongst his most expansive tracks yet.

Review: Unbelievably, it's been a decade since Roni Size last released an album, and nine since he dropped a solo single. Take Kontrol, then, is something of a pleasant surprise; not only for it's appearance at all, but also because it's rather good. Of course, much has changed in D&B since the Bristolian's last outing, and that's reflected in the sounds and micro-styles explored. Sure, there's a blast-from-the-past feel about some of the material - see the jump-up meets EDM of "Made in Korea", for starters - but for the most part it sounds like something that could appear on Hospital. There's a bold, festival-friendly feel through, with lashings of bright electronics, starburst synths and, of course, heavyweight electro basslines. Oh, and autotune-heavy pop vocals.

Review: 2014 is a special year for Dom Angas. Not only is he turning 40, but it also marks 20 years since the release of his first single under the Dom & Roland alias. As part of the celebrations, he's handed over the parts to a string of classic productions to a veritable who's who of D&B talent. They provide a series of dark, pulverising, rolling and occasionally intense reworks, all designed to cement his reputation as one of the greatest exponents of the artform. Review: Having made his debut at the turn of the century, DJ Patife is a genuine legend of Brazilian drum & bass. Who better, then, to mix this celebration of carnival-ready, samba-flecked D&B from South America's fastest-growing economy? This is no history lesson, though (despite the presence of a couple of classic cuts), Wisely, Partife chooses to focus on the current strength of the country's jungle seen, largely sticking to material released by homegrown label Luvdisaster. The results are predictably enjoyable, with Patife mixing up summery, sun-flecked dancefloor workouts from the likes of Dirtbag, Subsid, Oliver Ferrer, CABLE and DJ Chap.

Review: Since signing Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive to his Metalheadz imprint last year, Goldie has acted as a kind of mentor, supervising the recording of this debut album. In many ways, it makes a lot of sense; Ulterior Motive's brand of jungle-influenced drum and bass no doubt appeals to the producer-turned-celebrity's rave sensibilities. The Fourth Wall is a confident and engaging debut, with spangling, piano-laden rave moments - see the early '90s revivalism of "Tape Pack" - nestling side by side with dark, twisted rollers and deeper, more experimental fare. It's this latter strand - and most particularly the James Sutherland collaboration "Muted" - that makes The Fourth Wall such an impressive debut.

Review: Med School's New Blood series has always executed a simple idea brilliantly. Its concept may be basic - gathering together material from new, up-and-coming and soon-to-breakthrough producers - but the resultant compilations are rarely less than essential. This fourth annual installment is every bit as exciting and enjoyable as its predecessors, and variously touches on string-laden downtempo grooves (Donevan Adams), intoxicating deep dubstep (Hidden Element), dBridge style experimental D&B (Ashjerona), broken beat (Krux) and, of course, plenty of dancefloor drum and bass. It's a testament to Med School's A&R department that there's nary a duffer in sight, and plenty of names we'll no doubt be seeing more of in coming years.

Review: Drum and bass legend turned TV personality Goldie is the latest DJ to take Ministry of Sound's Masterpiece test, following in the footsteps of Andrew Weatherall and Francois K. While there's plenty of D&B present - check disc three, which is mostly made up of material from his own Metalheadz imprint - it's the influences and classics discs that really make this essential. Disc one shows the breadth of the former, as Goldie joins the personal dots between jazz, Terry Callier, Roy Ayers, Radiohead, Junior Murvin, the disco of Teena Marie and the proto-house brilliance of Serious Intention. Disc two is, if anything, even more thrilling, featuring as it does a tight but misty-eyed mix of early jungle and D&B classics from the likes of Ruffidge Kru, Wax Doctor and Internal Affairs.

Review: NYC producer Lee Bannon has always been a hard man to pin down. His 2012 debut album, Fantastic Plastic on Plug Research, portrayed him as a leftfield, hip-hop minded beatmaker par excellence. Yet by the time he delivered a follow-up, the Ninja Tune released Alternate/Endings, he's switched focus, serving up a range of dark, atmospheric, soundtrack-inspired jungle and drum and bass mash-ups that had more in common with Amon Tobin or early Wagon Christ than straight-up D&B. Main/Flex, his third album, continues on this theme, peppering a range of rhythms - two-step, jungle, warped breakcore, experimental D&B - with clandestine chords, bold basslines, claustrophobic samples and immersive pads. The result is another intoxicating and inspired collection.
