Made In NY LTD (hand-numbered 7" limited to 150 copies)
Cat: MNY 002. Rel: 19 Jul 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. It Go Let (Disco Bobulated edit) (5:45)
  2. Going Home (TT edit) (5:24)
Review: More from New York's shadowy Made In NY crew, a self-styled "record collective of disco deejays" whose first EP of rare disco reworks was one of our favourite edit EPs of 2017. You'll have to move fast to grab a copy of this belated seven-inch sequel because there are only 150 of them floating around. Disco_bobulated handles side A, expertly rearranging a stomping and occasionally spacey disco-funk affair rich in punchy horns, crusty Clavinet lines and smooth electric piano motifs. Over on side B TT takes over, offering up a version of a Chaz Jankel style tune rich in bouncy disco-reggae grooves, soulful vocals, ear-catching organ lines and jangling pianos.

Review: Some five years on from the release of his brilliant debut album, "Biology", Young Marco has finally got round to producing another full-length excursion. This one is similarly special and forms part of Island of the Gods' excellent "Island Explorer" series. It sees the colourful Dutch producer deliver a range of ambient and new age tracks that fuse his usual ear-catching electronics and 1980s synthesizer sounds with traditional Indonesian instrumentation recorded on a trip to the country a few years ago (one of his grandparents hails from the Asian nation, so it was a pilgrimage of sorts). It's all hugely atmospheric, evocative and entertaining, offering a humid but sparkling array of soundscapes that reminded us a little of Hanyo von Oosterom's work as Chi Factory.

Review: Last year, Raiders of the Lost Arp (real name Marco Pierro) popped up on Edizioni Mondo with a decidedly Balearic EP that ranks amongst his best work to date (and that's saying something). Here he returns to Francesco de Bellis's label with an album that's arguably even better. Rich in analogue synthesizers, bubbly lo-fi drum machine rhythms, sun-baked guitars and toasty bass, "Transmissioni" brilliantly strings together drowsy neo-Balearic gems in a range of interconnected styles. It's a superb set all told, with highlights including the subtle Tullio de Piscopo tribute "Studio Ritmico", the stargazing, arpeggio-led ambient of "Progressi Della Scienzi", the shuffling afternoon warmth of "Nightlife" and the Mark Barrott-esque goodness of closing cut "Timing".

Review: Like Delsin label mates Conforce and Claro Intelecto, veteran producer John Beltran seems incapable of producing duff albums. "Hallo Androiden", his first full length outing for two years, is another wonderfully atmospheric, melodic and emotive set that recalls the producer's impeccable 1990s output. The nine tracks are as lushly produced as you'd expect, with Beltran effortlessly drifting between eyes-closed ambient techno, lilting electronica, slowly shifting sunset soundscapes and the kind of grandiose, life affirming ambient compositions that have long been a feature of the veteran producer's work. As with much of his output, there are enough intricate details and emotion-stirring motifs to suggest that the album will sound just as good on the 50th listen as it does the first.

The original version on the A side is featured for your enjoyment - that's a given - and you can enjoy this timeless classic featuring producer Verdine White's amazing production.

Review: Time marches relentlessly on as does the immortal sound of iconic Manchester band Joy Division. At the heart of Unknown Pleasures was the alarming vocal talent of Ian Curtis. His alien wails, echoed expressionistic vistas of urban alienation over No Wave tribal beats and Gothic guitar impressions. And despite the breathtaking intensity of the angular acid comedown "She's Lost Control", the soaringly depraved detachment of "New Dawn Fades" and the proto-slowcore "Candidate", opening track "Disorder" remained the piece years ahead of its time and most immediately enduring. This anniversary record arrives almost forty years to the day after it was originally released, splashed out on 180g ruby red vinyl with an alternative white sleeve to resemble the original and legendary cover design. Unquestionably authentic, Unknown Pleasures was a vision so uncompromising and haunting that each track was worth its length. This commemorative reissue, then, continues the celebration of one of the most important albums of our time as well as highlighting the record as a landmark in music-design crossover history.

  1. Magic Dance (Disco mix) (8:29)
  2. Pink Footpath (Disco mix) (6:13)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Compared to some of the ultra-obscure releases buffed up and reissued on Best, Loui$' "Magic Dance" is something of a perennial classic, but that doesn't diminish its value in getting another airing. Loui$ released a modest wedge of killer party anthems in his 80s peak, but this debut 12" in 1985 was the glittering prize. Of all the versions of this release, the rare Blow Up Records edition is the one that gets a look in here, and it's all about that special disco mix of "Pink Footpath". From gutsy analogue bass to shimmering lead pads, it's a dreamy dancefloor jam in every way.

Review: Best Records present another deep cover jam Balearic diggers will rejoice at being able to lay their hands on. Blue Night was the brainchild of Peter Miconi, who created "Turn Me Loose" in 1983. All the elements are present here, from the aching blue-eyed soul vocals to rich guitar solos and an irrepressible funk bedded down in the groove, here stretching out for a full 14 minutes of pure sunkissed bliss. On the flip, SIRS takes a careful run at the original that simply reframes the elements with a more pronounced rhythm section - this is someone who knows exactly what the track needs and declines to change anything for the sake of it. Classy stuff, as you would expect from a reissue on Best Records.

Review: Michael Stearns is perhaps less namechecked than many of the early ambient pioneers, but his expansive catalogue reaches back to 1977, when his first expansive synthesizer dreamscapes unfurled themselves on his own Continuum Montage label. Emotional Rescue have picked up on seminal 1981 album Planetary Unfolding, giving a much needed vinyl reissue to a classic slice of hyperboreal ambience spread across six long-form movements. Expansive, emotionally charged and constantly exploratory, this is deep space listening at its finest - an essential purchase for any lovers of truly classic, cosmic synthesizer music.

Review: Best strike Italo gold once again with this Maurizio 'Sangy' Sangineto production. The original of Valery Allington's Stop has more of a pop funk feel, giving the vocalist and her backing crew stacks of space to hit the right spot but the real magic here is Maurizio's production on the special electronic version and instrumental. Aeons ahead of its time, the relentless pump and near-majestic synth work sound closer to '92 than '82. Tunnelling, hypnotic, percussive and funky, this was - and still is - the sound of the future.

And it's another essential addition to our collections. As an act renowned for covering the spectrum and subverting the styles, the album format is perfect for the Oxford duo as they guide us through the spectrum... Launching with sing-along sunny-side jungle ("Shutdown") and closing with epic Sigma-esque gospel business ("Newborn") they pack every shade and style in between from soothing chime-laced deepness ("Temporal"), introspective soulful steppers ("Fortitude") and absolute grizzlesome grit ("Holy Moly") A highly accomplished debut album.

Review: It's no secret the love that London promoter and record label Upset! The Rhythm have for the ever rotating cast of musicians that is Normil Hawaiians. This latest reissue of the English band sees the label complete its retrospection of Normil Hawaiians following reissues of More Wealth Than Money and Return of The Ranters LPs. The band's music is the real deal when it comes to raw and emotional UK post punk and wave. This album in particular, which failed to take off in 1984 due to label and liquidation issues, sees its 2019 release arrive with a collectors edition of bonus tracks, including live cuts, album outtakes and unreleased B-sides. Review: Following the original dissolution of legendary Sheffield industrial funk outfit Clock DVA in 1984, founder member Adi Newton struck out on his own with The Anti-Group: an experimental project in which he could explore a variety of sonic worlds with the aid of a revolving cast of likeminded Steel City stalwarts (Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder, Martyn Ware and Warp co-founder Robert Gordon included). "4x12" is a retrospective of sorts, gathering together tracks from three 12" singles ("Ha-Zulu", "Big Sex", "Broadcast Test") and one mini-album ("ShT"). Musically, it veers from collage style sample patchworks and dark ambient soundscapes to rubbery industrial funk, twisted post synth-pop, EBM-influenced workouts and madcap experimental escapades.

Review: It's been a solid five years since the epic sounds of America's best plugged-in rock duo last electrified our ears. And be it a reference to the Rolling Stones or even Scorsese, the album turns it up from the start with "Shine A Little Light". Big time rhodes and bluesy folk mentalities are then wrapped up in a low-slung ballad that is "Walk Across The Water". Some fans may still be yearning for the raw energy that catapulted the duo into the limelight with Magic Potion, however high voltage sounds can still be found on tracks like "Under The Gun" and "Lo/Hi" - with gospel elements in this case edging to the fore. Overall there's a slight dance element protruding from this LP in comparison to previous records, begging the question: Can you dig it!

Review: While much of L.I.E.S founder Ron Morelli's production work has tended towards the dark and dystopian, there's something surprisingly becalmed and gentle about his latest full-length excursion, fifth solo album "Man Walks The Earth". Of course, there are still some slightly bleak, detached soundscapes dotted throughout the album (see "30 Million Years To Recover", the Radiophonic Workshop influenced "A Long Walk at Night" and the icy, off-key tipsiness of "Uninvited Brute"), for the most part Morelli deals in slowly shifting motifs, sustained ambient melodies and reverb-drenched electronics. The result is an album that's as mind-altering and otherworldly as it is accessible and entertaining.

Passive 1 to 2 splitter or 2 to 1 mixer
Notes: Whether you are mixing control voltage signals for more interesting modulations or just copying an audio signal for parallel processing, SPLIX is a handy addition to your arsenal of Eurorack tools.

Functioning as either a mixer or splitter, its small lightweight form-factor means it can fit nearly anywhere without weighing down your patch. The thumb-wheel controls the crossfader balance of two inputs, or the level ratio between two outputs. SPLIX also functions as a passive inline attenuator when using only one input and one output.
