These excellent live Dutch radio broadcast recordings of Depeche Mode from 1983 are for the first time available here on vinyl. Some of their earliest hits are featured, taken from the British band's first three seminal albums such as Speak & Spell, A Broken Frame and Construction Time Again. Highlights on the A side are the synthpop classics 'Everything Counts' and Get The Balance Right'. While over on the flip there are excellent versions never heard before of 'Told You So', 'New Life' and 'Just Can't Get Enough'.

Review: "This LP is a compilation of songs from five different digital-only demo collections I released on Bandcamp between 2021 and 2023. I relied on the ears and judgment of my old friend Dom at Feral Child to curate this comp, allowing him to choose his favorites from over 60 songs," James Toth says of Demon Stations. "While I might have chosen an entirely different batch of tunes, I was happy to defer to Dom, as I've never had much perspective when it comes to assessing my own material." With every track recorded at home, many on the same day they were written, and mostly first takes used, there's an audible quality to this collection of archive material that's every bit as honest as the artist's own explanation as to how the final package came about. An atmosphere entirely befitting the open-hearted folk and Americana dominating the release.

Apart from having one of the best and most singular names in electronic dance music, The Future Sound Of London have been one of the pillars of modern UK dance music, pushing through a mixture of house, techno, and breaks since the early 1990s - and, in fact, some of their tunes like "Papua New Guinea" are still getting regular play time in clubs today. While they have released a huge amount of music over the last 25 years, they've got an equally vast amount of unreleased gold in their treasure chest, a collection of tracks that have seen the light of day thanks to the present Archived series. This week it's time for the series' eighth instalment, another twelve unmissable bundles of electronic delight. However, this is a lot more than just a compilation, and the tunes work their fine mixture of melodies, breaks and electronic beats into a sublime collection of sounds. If you're into vast and explorative music with a cutting-edge, you needn't look any further.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Vade Mecum welcomes Soft Traffic for a debut release here and it is one that suggests the producer has a soft spot for the warm, deep and heady end of the dubbed out techno spectrum. Those are certainly all the words you would use to describe the quiet brilliance of opener 'Find Ya' (feat Prince Morella) which is icy cool and hypnotic. On the flipside, 'Night Drive' is another sublimely soft focus and supple techno roller with infinite horizons and milky pads that dissolve your soul. A superb debut.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Mako's Utopia label continues to be an essential outpost for anyone hungry for the latest steps forward in drum & bass, and here the man himself links up with the mighty Seba for two razor sharp excursions into moody, precision-engineered club gear that wears its experience out front. 'Brotherhood' is an absolute massive tune, holding down the pressure for an extended run time and getting crafty with the edits without ever over-cooking the recipe. On the flip, 'Stockholm Syndrome' takes a more atmospheric approach led by overcast synths and driven by a crisp-as-you-like beat - all the better to let the leads do the talking.

Tabu Ley Rochereau - "Hafi Deo" (Nick The Record & Dan Tyler re-edit dub)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Edits in the hole! Two Afrofunk gems enjoy floor-primed refocuses: Steve Monite's Doing It In Lagos-featured "Only You" gets a little juice from Sofrito's Frankie Francis who really brings the bass out in proceedings. Meanwhile on the B Nick The Record and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler tweak the energy and sheen of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Disco" as the drums are given a little more momentum and the chorus and horns are really brought to the centre of the action. Stunning.

Echo From The Outerworld (6:28)
Minimalism In Dub (5:23)
Review: We'd be hard pushed to think of any labels out there right now that are doing a better job of serving up deliciously deep and detailed dub techno than Echo LTD. For this one, the in house crew takes care of a pair of sublime new sounds that take you to the ocean floor and keep you there. 'Echo From The Outer World' opens with gently echoing chords pacing about the mix over a rolling and rubbery low end with shards of light beaming down from above as if the sun has just shone through some clouds. 'Minimalism In Dub' takes things back even further with more liquid rhythms and smooth drum rotations. So good.

The Signal Prevails (6:29)
Review: As the co-mingling of tech house and trance continues apace, we've reached the point where prog is fully back on deck and Space Lab are absolutely here for it. The continuously joyous, rave-minded party and label are in thrall to the unifying sounds of richly melodic, trippy club music, and Bristol-based producer Remotif is ready to give them what they want, not least on ecstatic lead track 'Substation Fever'. Adam Pits holds true to the overall vibe of the track while offering his own nuanced kind of trance-out on the 'Cascade Remix' before we flip over to savour the hot and steamy 'Hi Tek Lo Life' with its rowdy 90s house jack and expertly woven atmospherics. 'The Signal Prevails' switches stance for a slow but meaty breakbeat joint laden with a synapse-tingling array of pings, tweaks and wriggles for the wide-eyed massive.

Review: Serious Philly boogie business: In 1979 the Aleem brothers teamed up with serial hit maker Leroy Burgess for this outstanding bass slapping floor burner. Listen closely and you'll hear a young Luther Vandross on backing vocals as the twins bounce off each other with their signature high ranges. Meanwhile on the B we have a previously unreleased edit from one of the most vital, direction shaping remixers of the time; John Morales. Expect nothing but 8 minutes of pure disco bliss. We're hooked on this!

Review: Luke Wyatt is an NYC lo-fi experimentalist, now dwelling in Berlin and heads up the Valcrond Video imprint: which in recent times has served up great work by fellow retroverts in the form of Aussie electro fiend Privacy, the L.I.E.S. affiliated Steve Summers and analogue techno heroine Xosar. The sludgy and slow burning midnight rock on the title track is reminiscent of The Birthday Party via Ry Cooder, until he throws us a curveball with the aquatic electro frequencies of "Poser". On the flip, the vibe remains the same however "Stealing Geodes From The Nature Company" is a much deeper and experimental take on the Dopplereffekt sound. Finally, Wyatt gives you his perspective of Bob Dylan on the cheeky post punk ditty "Not Quite Music".

Deal With It
Review: Soul Brother present two sublime cuts by Carolyn Franklin, younger sister to Aretha, for their debut appearance on the seven inch format. On top of her significant body of work as a songwriter and background artist for Aretha and several other acts of the 60s and 70s, Carolyn Franklin record four solo albums and several singles for the RCA label. Rare groove heads favour Franklin's fourth LP If You Want Me in particular, issued in 1976 but originally recorded three years earlier, and Soul Brother have licensed two highlights for this 7" which demonstrate Carolyn's range for anyone not familiar with her work. "Sunshine Holiday" is a psyche delight akin to Linda Lewis' "Reach For The Truth" whilst "Deal With It" is pure funk.

James Brown - "Funky President" (4:25)
The Vibrettes - "Humpty Dump" (part 1) (3:14)
Review: Comapared to many of his contemporaries, James Brown usually left politics well alone but this infectious funky single from 1974 does show shades of the empowering times he was living in, urging his audience to buy land and "save your money like the mob". As well as being well ahead of its time by mentioning rapping, this has everything you want a track from the Godfather of Soul, namely plenty of vocal gymnastics, a drum break that practically screams 'sample me', a rock hard rhythm section and scratchy superfly guitar. Gets our vote! It's backed up by The Vibrettes' 'Humpty Dump', another track whose breakbeat has been heavily plundered but remains vivacious enough to fill most dancefloors in seconds.

Review: The origins of American act Newcleus lay in a 1977 Brooklyn DJ collective known as Jam-On Productions, including Ben 'Cozmo D' Cenac, Monique Angevin and her brother Pete - all teenagers and still in high school. The foursome named their group Newcleus as a result of the coming together of their families. Originally released on T.K. Records' Miami bass/freestyle subsidiary Sunnyview in 1985, "Space Is The Place" is an underground classic to those in the know. With its obvious robotic influences from the early '80s Bronx breakbeat sound, to the funk and synth pop crossover of "Cyborg Dance' on the flip - this is a true zeitgeist of one of the most exciting times in electronic music's history.

Review: In his recent book Major Labels, a history of popular music in seven genres, Kelefa Sanneh argues that pop is now so free of defined boundaries that's it's "barely a genre at all". Listening to LA rapper, singer and producer Doja Cat's third album, it's hard to disagree. Polished, professional and ear-catching, Planet Her is a hugely enjoyable romp whose hybrid, kaleidoscopic constructions variously synthesize elements of R&B, synth0heavy Afro-pop, dancehall, hip-hop, hyperpop, trap, 21st century bass music and much more besides. Throw in guest spots from the likes of Young Thug, Ariana Grande and JD, and you have an on-point pop album that will resonate far longer than most similarly framed sets.

Filtered earplugs that let you enjoy and feel the music
Notes: Pacato from ACS brings a whole new level of fidelity and comfort to ready-to-go earplugs.

Now with new packaging and contents, designed to reduce waste and single use plastic. See 'Items Included' for more info.

Available in varying sizes, the Pacato plug is comfortable, completely discreet and offers the most natural sound of any generic fit earplug in its class. With Pacato you can hear what you need to hear with all the clarity that you're used to and easily converse and communicate without putting your hearing at risk.

The Pacato is one of the most discreet universal-fit plugs available with a flush fitting filter that enables the plug to sit comfortably in the ear with no protrusion making them ideal for use under headwear or in any situation where discretion for the wearer is desired.

Offering an average of 19dB protection the Pacato is suitable for use in most amplified music or other loud noise environments keeping your hearing safe from damaging exposure to excessive noise but ensuring that you stay involved in the performance. Using Pacato earplugs you can enjoy your music at a level that suits you without losing the fidelity of the sound as you might with foam earplugs, in addition, the Pacato keeps all the atmosphere allowing you to hear what's going on around you and communicate clearly with others so you don't have to feel isolated from the music, the atmosphere or the people to keep your hearing safe from harm.

Trying to create a natural sounding earplug is no mean feat as far as your own voice is concerned because, as you will have experienced, when you block off your ear canal your own voice starts to boom inside your head, this is what we call occlusion. Occlusion is caused by sound that is carried to your ear canal through the cartilage at the side of your head and usually escapes through the open ear canal so is not heard. When we block off the canal this sound cannot escape and so creates that booming effect.

A large amount of occlusion can be eliminated by ensuring that the earplug sits deep enough into the ear canal to extend past the cartilage so that the sound hits the plug and is deadened rather than entering the canal at all but the Pacato filters go one step further. The Pacato is vented to allow sound to pass both ways which means that remaining sound can escape directly through the filter providing one of the most natural sounding earplugs available.

The Pacato also offers resilience to moisture and wax build up. Being shielded from external moisture with the hard outer shell means that the fabric filter membrane is protected from the elements so your earplug will keep on performing in adverse conditions but, in addition, the filters and plugs can be cleaned to keep them performing for years to come.

The Pataco plugs from ACS offer a perfect cost-effective solution to protect your hearing in a variety of environments whilst making sure that you get one of the most natural sounding earplugs available.

ACS have re-designed the packaging and re-thought the contents of the Pacato earplugs.
To reduce waste ACS have removed some of the spare items which were not always used, and they have also swapped the imported plastic box for a locally sourced and recyclable cardboard box to reduce single use plastic.
This has also allowed ACS to reduce the price by more than 25%.

Review:
For their second installment, the Chateau Chepere crew brings on board legendary producer Stephan Laubner under his STL moniker, with four time warping pieces of music. With his distinctive and intricate sonic palette, Laubner extracts from his hardware different musical colors and shapes to produce singular atmospheres. Opening up the EP is Fly Fly, an epic 11 min minimal house trip full of tension and excitement, followed by Eargrind, an eerie, laid back Detroit leaning ballad. On the flip is Light Up, a spaced out, playful and bittersweet number that will revitalize any hazy after-hours dancefloor. Closing up the EP is Unlike Dislike, a quirky, jacking and mischievous techno workout for the packed club. This diverse ep will pull the listeners and dancers into Laubner's multifaceted, low key but captivating universe.

Review: Local Talk hits the rather significant catalogue number of 100 with a forward thinking EP that stays true to its MO over the last few years. It finds MLiR aka Modern Life Is Rubbish joined by Arnau Obiols to serve up a brace of brilliant tunes that blur the lines between a myriad different dance styles. "Lajbans" is a playful, fun tune with tooting arps and cosmic melodies all married to a chugging beat that Todd Terje would be proud of. The Bellaterra dub on the flip reworks it with plenty of space echo, knob twirling effects and sci-fi atmospheres. A tidy little package.
