Party Music EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SHIFT 006. Rel: 09 Dec 19
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. Party Music (6:45)
  2. Keep On (5:56)
  3. So Tight (6:02)
  4. Everything (6:16)
Review: It feels like barely any time has passed since Javi Frias last set our bags alight with "Just Give It Up", but he's back once more on his own Night Shift with more of those oh-so-cool edits to share with the world. The strain of disco funk he's digging into on this record is just sublime, particularly on the A side with the self-explanatory "Party Music" and sweet string sizzle of "Keep On". On the B side there's a fiercer uptempo slant to "So Tight" and a more classic soul feel to "Everything" - one to bring a crowd together in a moment of heartfelt expression whether they know the words or not.

  4. Double Exposure - "Everyman" (Joey Negro's Salsoul Strut) (7:18)
Review: The latest volume in Z Records' essential "Attack The Dancefloor" 12" series draws together some killer recent rubs by Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro. He first delivers a "Re-Organised Master Mix" of the O'Jays' 80s electrofunk sing-along "Put Our Heads Together", wisely emphasizing the vocals and killer synthesizer motifs, before offering up an "extended rebuild" of his classic Doug Willis cut "Dancin' 2020" that smothers a soaring disco track with spacey synth solos and jaunty pianos. Side B sports an organ-heavy "In Full Swing" remix of Sunkids and Chance's U.S garage classic "Rescue Me", as well a scene-stealing rework of Double Exposure's Salsoul classic "Everyman". While the whole EP is impressive, the latter is particularly inspired.

Review: After a break of almost a year, Admin fires up his Community Disc-O's imprint with another selection of all-star edits. Sometime GAMM and Whiskey Disco dons The Patchouli Brothers kick things off via the seductive, low-slung disco-funk goodness of "Where's Walter?" - a traditional style re-edit that proves that you don't need modern studio trickery to successfully re-imagine an old record - before sometime Situation man (and one half of Divine Situation) Paulo Fulci expertly rearranges a dusty chunk of rousing, horn-heavy dancefloor disco. Admin himself offers up the hot-to-trot, horn-sporting goodness of "Get Up & Do!", while Island Times draws things to a close with the hazy goodtime grooves of "Penney's Finest".

Review: Matthew Farrow takes a break from his Kepler alias to deliver this sure shot of garage rudeness to Burnski's Instinct label, and he's sounding absolutely on point. "Inside" has plenty of MC flava sprinkled over it, not to mention all the 4x4 rudeness you could wish for from the bassline upwards. "Steppa" is a more soulful cut with a crafty breakstep twist to it, while "Rouge Fader" brings it back to that naughty middle ground between uptempo house and proper swinging garage, DX7 organ and all. "Break" gets tricky with the drum licks again, completing a set of good time rabble rousing business.

  3. Chaos In The CBD & Lee Pearson Jnr Collectiv - "It's Up To Me" (feat K LaDawn & Joe Armon Jones - instrumental) (6:07)
Review: On this rare outing on Neroli, Chaos In The CBD has been joined by a wealth of friends and like-minded musicians. They first join forces with saxophonist and fellow kiwi jazz legend Nathan Haines and talented South London keys player Dave Koor aka Modified Man on A-side "Emotional Intelligence", a deliciously deep, positive and melodious affair rich in jaunty Clavinet riffs, simmering strings, smile-inducing chords and groovy, bongo-laden drums. On side B they offer up vocal and instrumental versions of "It's Up To Me". K. LaDawn, Joe Armon-Jones and Lee Pearson Jnr Collective are the guests this time round, and their contributions - hazy, soulful vocals, mazy electric piano solos, jaunty jazz-house drums and so on - help make the track a sensual, slow-burn dancefloor delight. Almost all Chaos In The CBD EPs are worth checking, but this one is extra-special.

Review: London-based Frenchman Nicolas Laugier aka The Reflex is back, here inaugurating his new vinyl series Flex7. Bringing this bunch of rare grooves (from the original tapes) for some edits that combine creativity and functionality - all with maximum dancefloor impact. On the A side, we've got the pitched-down slo-mo funk attack of "Good High" which is as low slung as you like it. On the flip, we have someone doing a half decent job of impersonating "the hardest working man in show business" on the addictive soul power of "Engine #9".

Review: Best dig out a bona fide gem from the early days of Italian house music - a one-shot hit from the masterful minds of Alex Neri and Marco Baroni that originally surfaced in 1992 on Adriatic Club. This sunkissed classic has everything a deep house cut should - smooth piano, a splash of diva vocals, and feel-good vibes oozing from every pore. For our money the "Deep Jungle Mix" is the one - a smouldering swinger that will draw you in and keep you warm at night, but whichever twist on the '90s styles you prefer this record has got you covered.

Review: Taking a break from their usual Italian remit, Best turn their attention to an overlooked pioneer from the annals of German electronic music history. Harry Thumann was based in Munich, and primarily worked as a studio engineer, but his own recorded work was vitally important too. An early adopter of MIDI, and with a propulsive electronic disco sound that was right at the cutting edge of the times, the four "experiments" Best have gathered here represent some of the most potent dancefloor jams he created - full-fat technicolour fever dreams for the fabulous and flamboyant.

  1. Gladys Knight & The Pips - "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love" (Soul Flip edit) (4:03)
  2. Lee Dorsey - "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" (Soul Flip edit) (4:01)
Review: For their latest trick, Soul Flip duo Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo [sic] have turned their attention to classic cuts from Lee Dorsey and Gladys Knight and the Pips. It's the latter's rare cut "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love" that gets the scalpel treatment first, with the pair cutting up and looping the opening piano riff before extending the Motown style song's stomping groove and inspired vocals to better suit modern dancefloors. On the flip it's all about their take on Lee Dorsey's 1970 song "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", a DJ-friendly version that sneakily extends key instrumental passages to make the track well over a minute longer than the original. Given that Dorsey's version is arguably too short, we think it's a much-needed adjustment.

Munich's The New Morning were amongst the many crews inspired by what Baldelli was championing, and they created incredible, unusual dance music that easily stands up to modern standards for its inventive fusions of global influences and electronic technology. From the heady house throw down "In Japan" to the cosmic dancehall flex of "Jay's Rhama", there's so much to vibe off here, all of it highly compatible with the adventurous sounds creeping into DJ sets in the current era.

Review: Nearly five years after the first seven-inch appeared, the seventh volume in J Rocc's on-point "Funky President Edits" series lands. As with the tracks contained on previous volumes, the showcased cuts have long been staples in his DJ sets and should be considered "tried and tested bombs". First up on side A is "Flight #2", a shuffling, ear-pleasing affair that combines jangling elements from a semi-acoustic Afro-Soul cut with borrowed chorus vocals and languid, laidback percussion. "Greddy Foot", on the other hand, is a low-slung funk bomb -a slightly dubbed-out revision of a James Brown original with additional vocal samples from other Godfather of Soul workouts.

The dedication track is a beautiful slice of jazzy house with nimble key playing throughout, which Brawther takes in a deeper direction for his remix. "Tangram With My Sister" is a snappier affair with crisp drums and slick chords, and "Passeio Alegre" maintains the mellow flow with more plush keys and a tight beat. Even if it came from a sad place, Caiado sounds philosophical and even uplifting on this refined EP, positioning himself as one of the finest contemporary deep house producers in operation right now.

Review: Although arguably better known these days for his "Soopastole" edits series, Soopasoul has made plenty of original music in his time. In fact, he's rarely made many better records than "It's Just Begun", a two-part cover of the Jimmy Castor Bunch classic that first saw the light of day on Jalapeno Records back in 2008. The A-side instrumental cover is fairly faithful to Castor and company's original - especially the heavyweight bottom-end groove - while adding far more sax and trumpet solos and some seriously flanged guitars. The longer flipside "Part 2" version mixes things up a little, building up the groove in stages before unleashing the killer horn solos and ten-ton bassline. It's arguably the better of the two versions, though both are superb.

While that is a sobering sentiment, the tune he serves up is far from it - dazzling disco synths, big horn leads and noodling fun bass keeps you moving nonstop from the first beat to the last drop. Review: Earlier in the year, Matasuna Records reissued two rare and exceedingly hard to find tracks by Peruvian band Bossa 70. They'll soon be offering up more original cuts from the band's sought-after debut album, but before then they're treating us to two dancefloor-focused re-edits of Bossa 70 classics by American DJ/producer Retro Roland Riso. On the A-side he delivers a DJ-friendly "Perfecto Edit" of Think, a horn-heavy slab of Peruvian funk rich in rubbery beats and hazy bass. Just as cheery and life affirming is his interpretation of "Get Out Of My Way". This is an altogether heavier, faster and more stomping revision, though it's the vibrancy of the psychedelic era Latin funk backing track that really sets the pulse racing.

Review: Although they've been dropping gems digitally for the best part of five years, the Heat Rock Records crew only recently upgraded to vinyl. This is the cheeky rework collective's third "45" and the good news is that it's every bit as heavy and club-ready as its predecessors. Pickster and DJ Melo handle side A with "Saturdays (110 Edit)", a head-nodding, mid-tempo roller that layers snippets from classic Mighty Ryeders and De La Soul cuts over a chunky, disco style 4/4 beat. Label mainstays Altered Tapes take over on the flip and serve up the chunky hip-hop/soul/jazz fusion warmth of "It's Like Butter". It's not quite as instantly arresting as the A-side, but it's every bit as good.

Review: For the latest missive on their fast-rising DET313 label, Gary Martin and Yossi Amoyal have dug deep into the archives of Martin's long-running Teknotika Records imprint. First up on the A-side is a re-mastered version of "A City At Night", a Martin cut from 1990 that mixes the futurist intent of Motor City techno with chunkier, UK style techno grooves and the kind of stabs and musical flourishes more associated with Robert Hood or Terrence Parker records. Side B boasts a freshly extended edit of another Martin gem - this time under the Gigi Galaxy alias - from 1994. "The Dream" more than lives up to its title, with Martin wrapping restless bass, starry lead lines, alien electronics and sumptuous chords around a hypnotic deep techno groove.

It features tracks recorded between 1972 and '91 by a variety of unknown artists, with the assembled music touching on disco, psych-funk, Moog-laden club-focused instrumentals and heavyweight, Bob Marley-inspired reggae rhythms. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set of off-kilter and unusual Somalian translations of American and Caribbean music styles, with the bumper accompanying booklet offering up a wealth of little-known information.

Rohrscheid has offered up a slew of psychedelic dancefloor workouts shot through with subtle - and, to be honest, not-so-subtle - references to various styles of 1990s electronic music. He's at it again here, too, romping his way through acid/trance/early progressive house fusion ("Reality"), clanking, sub-heavy UK techno (the spacey "Winx"), intergalactic ambient techno/IDM heaviness (EP highlight "Leaves"), and bombastic, out-of-this world, Rephlex style "braindance" (the mid-to-late '90s Aphex Twin goodness of "Between Worlds"). It's a good collection of tracks, with enough variety and inventiveness to avoid the pitfalls of hollow stylistic pastiche.

It's plain to hear none of the US techno maverick's wild edges have dulled in the interim - "Steady Stare" bristles with angular energy as ear-snagging as it is individual. "Let Us In" is another fluttering techno piece with East Coast toughness balanced out by pattering psychedelia. "Mystic Strings" amps up the trippy synth lines in stunning fashion, and "Someday" takes things in a more brooding direction without losing that distinctive spark that makes Anderson such a marvel to behold.

  5. Wipe The Needle - "Rise Up" (feat Lifford - Kai Alce Distinctive remix) (7:47)
Review: Most of the cuts showcased on the latest EP from Kai Alce's NDATL label - released in cahoots with Makin' Moves - have previously only been available digitally, while the others have never appeared at all. For that reason alone, the 12" is well worth checking out. Alce begins by offering up his warm, soulful and groovy vocal revision of Emdee Brown's "Again", before treating us to two versions of DJ Kemit and the Lounge Lizards' "Wake Up Stand" - a righteous vocal take and a "Hardubb" that brilliantly recasts it as a rolling late night bumper. Over on side B you'll find the broken beat/deep house fusion of Alce's rub of Malik Alston's "Promise Me Love" and a baggy, soulful and lilting rework of "Rise Up" by Wipe The Needle.

  1. Here For It (Justin Househeads original) (7:20)
  2. Here For It (Deep Tech remix) (7:14)
  3. Here For It (Deeper Tech Rub) (7:00)
Review: NDATL is proud to announce the return of KemeticJust to NDATL after it's first 2010 hit "I Got Life" for our 25th release! We couldn't be more satisfied with result. "Here for It" starts of with the Original Househeads mix feat the lush vocals of Terrance Downs snappy drums & light guitar swing that immediately catches the listener. Then KemeticJust takes us into a chord laiden deep tech remix, which hypnotizing and soothing at the same time. The B Side see the Deeper Tech Rub which take us into territory unknown, sparse piano and vocals surrounded by an entangling bassline to take any dancefloor into the stratosphere! We hope you'll enjoy this as much as we do!

  1. Cabriodelic (7:00)
  2. On The Way (6:30)
  3. Tour De L'afrique (7:44)
  4. In Sands (5:34)
Review: The last we heard from Kinfolk was on the excellent "Mirage" by Kalidasa, but now the adventurous and chug-friendly label is back with this killer EP from Alterleo. "Cabriodelic" will have hips swinging at an easy tempo, not least thanks to the nagging throb of the bassline and the swaying drums shaking over the top of the track. "On The Way" takes things in a freakier direction, using ample samples and channeling a little industrial noir, while "Tour De L'afrique" focuses on craftily programmed drums and captivating melodic subtleties. "In Sands" finishes the set with a wigged out acid-trance rumination that should appeal to those who love the sound of European freak-beats before dance music got compartmentalized.

  1. Road To Hana (7:49)
  2. 6AM Again (7:23)
  3. We Met At The Sun (7:18)
Review: It's been a hot minute since Scott Boutin graced us with his refined strain of electronic disco, but the Roam Recordings main man is back on Whiskey Pickle with more of his shimmering dancefloor delights. The lead synths on "Road To Hana" are pure joy, twinkling and bright like a well-lit disco ball. "6AM Again" switches the focus to some bassier synth lines with a warm Moog-y feeling, and while the name might suggest this is a wind down jam, really this track feels perfect for a smooth warm up too. "We Met At The Sun" completes the set with a house-oriented slant that could sit next to warmer strains of acid as much as Metro Area-esque disco.

  1. Inspiration (7:40)
  2. Transition (8:36)
Review: As UR continue to revisit some of their finest hours, the Detroit techno powerhouse stops on one of the most life-affirming of all their releases. "Inspiration" is as jovial as anything you can expect to hear from Mad Mike and co., motoring through a heartfelt lead synth line and fist-pumping disco undercarriage in truly anthemic style. "Transition" meanwhile is a freakier number, combining spiritual lyricism with a righteous bump of house dynamics fuelled by those futuristic melodies that define the seminal label. If you haven't felt the soul power of these timeless jams, do yourself a life-changing favour.

  4. At The End Of The World (4:06)
Review: 2019 has been a successful year for sometime Analogical Force contributor James Shinra, with this tidy Craigie Knowes release following on from inspired outings on Furthur Electronix and Feel My Bicep. He opens the EP in stunning style via the thrusting, high octane thrills of "Kord" - a kind of interplanetary mix of electro, sci-fi techno and rushing piano house riffs - before brilliantly mixing crunchy breakbeats, paranoid acid lines and echoing dub techno chords on "Gyprgy". Over on side B, "Gritti" is a tough and tidy acid-electro number blessed with some wonderfully deep chords, while "At The End Of The World" is melodious, picturesque, psychedelic and pleasingly bass-heavy.

Review: Ibadan Records doesn't release anywhere near as many EPs as it once did, but those that the label does put out tend to be action-packed and of the highest quality. Their latest - the third edition in their occasional "Leads & Bites" multi-artist series - certainly fits the bill. Label founder Jerome Sydenham is undoubtedly the star of the show. He first joins forces with Argy on a hypnotic late night Dub of basement-bothering big room workout "Whisper Track", before going solo on the off-kilter, minor key deep house brilliance of "Purple Beech". Over on side B he collaborates with Janne Tavi on the "Weekend"-sampling deep piano house flex of "Street Jazz", before layering up toasty Rhodes riffs and sweaty, cymbal heavy jazz-house beats on his "Raw Dub" of Herb Martin's "Soul Drums".

Review: Given the quality, depth and melodiousness of her productions, we always felt that Shanti Celeste would be capable of producing a great debut album. As "Tangerine" defiantly proves, we were right. Rooted in her dreamy but driving club sound but peppered with delicious downtempo diversions - see the Japanese-influenced new age minimalism of "Natura", the drowsy ambient bliss of "Sun Notification" and "Selected Ambient Works" style opaque fluidity of "Slow Wave" - "Tangerine" is a brilliant showcase for the Peach Discs founder's inimitable talents. There's a pleasant amount of variation amongst the killer club cuts too, with highlights including the intergalactic techno bounce of "Aqua Block", the mangled drum and bass mysticism of "Voz", the retro-futurist breakbeat garage bustle of "Want" and the dream house skip of "Sesame".
