Review: So, how long have you been waiting for this one to drop? The answer really depends on two things - whether you've just been waiting for new long form material from the UK IDM legends Autechre, or whether you've been waiting for Autechre to put a proper album together that stays true to the principles and format of a 'proper album', as this does.

Either way let's just say Signs has been some time in the making, and it's definitely a case of payoff for patience. For the most part it's the waves of space age melody that really stand out, tracks like 'Esc Desc' seem to fill the room with bands of sci-fi harmony. Of course there's plenty of glitch and bleep here, too - the stepping 'Au14' is a case in point - alongside rumbling, bass-heavy business like 'Si100', where playful drips of percussion create a juxtaposition of innocence and menace.

Review: Wayfaring sound explorer Sw. is best known for his stellar stints on SUED, Acido and Apollo (often alongside Svn) but he's also got firm roots in the illustrious world of Kimochi. Area's oddball label is a perfect fit for Sw.'s roaming, inquisitive approach, where scuffed sound design exploration sits alongside subdued garage and red-lining electronica faces off with melancholic '80s hauntology. For the bold DJs, there are certainly potential bangers folded into the mysterious fabric of this record, but as with all things Kimochi the overall mood looks past functional dance music while celebrating many of its tropes.

  2. Willie Mays, Boom For Real (5:58)
Review: New York art-house outfit Gray might not be the most famous to come from America's biggest, loudest and proudest city, but their oeuvre is definitely worth taking the time to discover. Fronted by the more recognisable name of Jean-Michel Basquait, as this two-tracker goes to show the outfit can teach us all a thing or two about how to encapsulate the life that exists on your doorstep.

Comprising previously unreleased and very rare work, the centre point is 'Never Gonna Leave New York City', which could almost be seen as a counterargument to LCD Soundsystem's 'New York, I Love You'. There we had James Murphy lamenting the loss of the old dirty side of the Big Apple, but here Basquait is celebrating that chaos and intensity as it still existed back in the 1980s. A vivid spoken word homage to scenes we all know from movies, if not reality.

Review: Oliver Coates is a London-based cellist, composer and producer. He has contributed to the recordings of Radiohead, collaborated on composition with Laurie Spiegel and John Luther Adams, and performed as an improviser with Dean Blunt and Micachu. His in-depth understanding of the relationship with classical cello is met with his exploration and pleasure in electronic audio and synthesis. Two years after the previous full-length Shelley's on Zenn, he returns to RVNG Intl for his third release entitled Skins N Slime. The 11 compositions pursue an experimental direction influenced by the architecture of Gordon Matta-Clark, the musical numerology of Hanne Darboven and the electronics of Enno Velthuys, as well as the experience gained during the numerous live shows in support of Thom Yorke.

Review: On an album which cites the influence of American minimalist composers, Danish industrial noise veteran Christian Stadsgaard presents his third LP under the Vanity Productions alias on Posh Isolation - the label and project that he runs with Loke Rahbek. Featuring five expressions of haunting and desolate ambient music, But All Spiked is meditative whilst at once dynamic, and undoubtedly the most absolute realisation of his tendencies and processes captured thus far. Here he skillfully applies compositional practices towards his particular context and oeuvre.

Review: London-based Discrepant follows reviews up some great ones by the likes of Etrusca 3D, Only Now x Orogen and Charbel Haver to introduce a new project Called Lagoss comprised of label boss Goncalo F. Cardoso and Tenerife-based Mladen Kurajica and Dani Tupper aka Tupperwear. Lagoss borrow from the exotica playbook of ideas and provide over three dozen sonic shapshots of trouble in paradise. Off-kilter grooves, imaginary soundtracks, exotic polyrhythms and intelligent dance music collide on this curious release. As the label so eloquently stated themselves "no armchair xylophone grooves here."

Review: Ed Davenport's Counterchange presents a new album by Portuguese-German producer John Guertler. A mix of krautrock, downtempo electronica, sound design experiments and ambient, Eigenlicht is a diverse album of electro-acoustic music. The 11 tracks were recorded between two studios and on location at Berlin's 'Devil's Mountain' (Teufelsberg) - the abandoned Cold War era US spy-radio and radar outpost. Many of the pieces here were first composed in his former basement studios in Berlin Wedding, mainly utilising a Macbeth Systems M5 modular synthesizer, before he relocated to his current Paradox Paradise studio.

Review:  Salzburg's cultural association 'Klubkulturklub Freakadelle', represents electronic music inspired by the frequent musical exchange among the members, as well as the infamous parties in the association's own club. This is the debut EP by a long-time resident and one of the city's key figures within the scene. Markmechanik has refined his production skills over his cohesive body of solo work culminating in the Wehmut EP. Features 'Emergency Loop' with its off-kilter IDM / techno vibe which is reminiscent of Shed, the evocative mood music of 'MiamiIce' is as low slung as you like it and 'Off Grit' is vaguely reminiscent of Autonomic's grey area experiments.

Review: Canadian minimal veteran Tomas Jirku has been a little quiet of late, but now he makes a welcome and unexpected return with something quite different for Silent Season. You can hear echoes of his earlier work in the soundscapes he's sculpted across Touching The Sublime, as high-definition sonic manipulation draws on his experience and eye for detail in wielding music technology, but rather than creating pointillist rhythmic structures, he's more concerned with billowing clouds of ambience. It's easy to draw parallels with the likes of Tim Hecker, but there's space for more techno-oriented productions in the midst of the maelstrom. Epic in scope and powerfully rendered, this is an album that will feed your head for a long time to come.

  3. Dew (3:28)
  4. Cherry (4:44)
Review: Detroit's Jay Daniel can no longer be referred to as a protegee. The Watusi High boss is very much a talent unto his own after forming a small but superb discography in the last few years. His latest outing is another exquisite mixture of his very real drum playing skills and an ability to coax real feeling out of his lush synths. After the ambiance of 'Muse,' 'Solo' sinks into a late night vibe with glowing pads and wooden hits making for a perfectly reflective mood. 'Dew' cuts more loose into ticketing drum work that is raw and off-grid, but again soften but those gaze-inducing pads, and 'Cherry' closes out with crunchy, dance floor ready grooves.

  6. The Man-Machine (5:31)
Review: There isn't a more hit-packed Kraftwerk album than The Man Machine. First released in 1978 and here reissued on red vinyl accompanied by a fresh booklet of vintage images, the album boasts some of the German band's best loved songs, including 'The Robots', cheery sing-along 'The Model', the staggeringly good 'Neon Lights', and the bubbly title track. It shows how good the album is that such gems as 'Metropolis' and the picturesque 'Spacelab' - cuts that most other bands would kill to be able to write - tend to be ignored or overlooked. If you love electronic music, you need a copy of The Man Machine in your collection.

  7. It's More Fun To Compute (4:15)
Review: You still won't find a more perfect electro album than Kraftwerk's Computer World, and it was the album that pretty much invented the style. That much is clear from this fresh 2020 reissue, which presents the iconic 1981 set on translucent yellow vinyl, accompanied by a slick booklet of fitting Kraftwerkian imagery. While 'Computer World', 'Pocket Calculator' and 'Computer Love' are near perfect electro-pop songs, it's the sheer heaviness and funkiness of the B-boy friendly beats on 'Home Computer', 'It's More Fun To Compute' and, most famously, 'Numbers' that make it such an essential. Put simply, Computer World still sounds like the future.
