With the anime concerning the travails and trials of a five-piece justice-league of Athenian intergalactic warriors - who each wear their own "Cloths", i.e. supernatural outfits that grant each protagonist special, demiurgic powers - you can expect each piece to be as rousing and galactic as that description suggests.

Review: Rhythm & Blues follows on from the success of its Mott The Hoople at the BBC 1970 release - well worth a look (or listen) - with another retrospective compilation that makes a convincing case for us all diving headfirst into the band's full back catalogue to marvel at what's there. A collection of broadcast tracks from Top Gear, Sounds of the Seventies, and The John Peel Sunday Concert are included, and all sound gritty, growly, raw and vital. Among the highlights are versions of Like A Rolling Stone and When My Mind's Gone, which the release notes argue are "rare-as-hens-teeth", and we're not in position to argue, while the take on 'What'd I Say' feels soaked in enough spilt whisky and blues you could probably get loaded on the fumes alone. Ultimately, though, there's no point picking individual parts here. Instead, think wall-to-wall reasons why the Hoople were such a rare breed.

To say the New Musical Express pulled together an impressive line up for the magazine's celebratory concert, at which the winners of a reader's poll were revealed, would be an understatement. Review: "They already sound like a veteran group and soon ought to be ranked in the company of the Who, Rolling Stones and the late Cream," said one US critic after catching Led Zeppelin playing one of America's most treasured concert halls, San Francisco's Filmore West. Then in its infancy, opening just a year before Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham took to the stage, we can say with a degree of certainty that this would be one of the shows that helped establish the address' now historic reputation. Gritty, very loud, and utterly groundbreaking at the time, trying to write about a Led Zeppelin record in 2023 isn't easy - so much has already been said and anyone with ears has likely heard them plenty by now. Attempting to do the same with a live recording feels even more redundant. Capturing their energy and ferocity on stage via words on page is impossible. Let's just say this, then: you won't regret picking this one.

Review: Way back in 1983, American musician Chris McCaa assembled a band and recorded one single as the Redhots - a dewy-eyed, AOR-leading Balearic ballad called 'If I Had To Say Goodbye'. At the time, McCaa slapped it on a 7", alongside the Brazilian-influenced jazz-funk sunshine of 'Bahama Rama' (another gorgeous, largely unknown gem), and released it himself. Mercifiully, it has been saved from obscurity (and eye-watering second-hand prices) by MISS YOU, who have decided to issue it on 12" for the first time. We get freshly remastered versions of both original tracks, alongside a gorgeous extended edit - created specifically with this release in mind - which ups the Balearic factor considerably. The resultant light-touch revision sounds like Chris Rea's Balearic classic 'Josephine', only miles better.

Review: The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. Given their skin in the game, it's no surprise to hear them nail the likes of 'Rocks Off' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', paying homage and doing their own thing in equal measure.

Review: Former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe formed Demolition 23 in New York in 1993, and their sole album should be considered essential listening for any lover of that ramped up glam-punk sound. 'Nothin's Alright' was an absolute earworm of a lead single from the album, but throughout there's stomping, singalong anthems to get your strut on to. Shockingly, this is the first time the album has ever received an official vinyl pressing, so don't expect this one to hang around once the Hanoi faithful catch wind of it.

Review: Everyone has their favourite Fleetwood Mac jams and that's because the band had such great versatility. That is displayed on this collection of BBC2 Sessions which were recorded between 1968-9. The 14 tracks all take in a mix of R&B, electric blues, acoustic blues and more. The sessions were originally recorded for a variety of TV and radio programs and these versions have never made it onto any studio album. This collection is a sister release to the official Live At The BBC album and includes tracks that have guest spots from Christine Perfect, who as Christine McVie became a big part of the band going forwards.

Review: The Kinks' fifth album Something Else by the Kinks continued the band's move towards eccentric baroque pop. The music-hall-inflected style centres around the introspective lyrics of Ray Davis, the album also marking the final involvement of American producer Shel Talmy. Nicky Hopkins plays keys on many of the tunes and backing vocals come from Ray's wife Rasa. 'Waterloo Sunset' is the standout tune here and one of the band's most famous singles. The album itself made it onto Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time back in 2003.

Review: Cats In Space, or CATS in SPACE - The Band, to use the official stylisation, either came along a few decades too late, too early, or at just the right time. It really depends where you were in the cycle of cultural and artistic reuse when they landed halfway through the last decade, their sound born from 1980s power rock-pop, which is delivered with all the unashamed commitment and sincerity of groups at that moment in history. Cheap, nostalgic pastiche this is not.
Whether that's something you can get on board with is another question, but we guarantee these guys really don't care. Existing entirely in some alternate dimension of their own, at times Mark Pascall's vocal delivery invokes New Jersey Bon Jovi, while there are moments when the tracks overall are more in keeping with Queen in less dramatic moods.

Review: Seven Psalms finds Australia's most imperious musical misfit Nick Cave leaving his Bad Seeds at home and teaming up with frequent collaborator Warren Ellis for a limited 10". The spoken word pieces on this record are the result of a daily song writing practice over a week during lockdown - Cave himself describes them as "small, sacred songs," set to appropriately subtle musical accompaniment. Recorded during the sessions for Cave and Ellis' 2021 album Carnage, it's a rich work in its own right that offers a different perspective on Cave's considerable gifts as a soothsayer.

Review: Not to be confused with the 12th studio album by Mary J. Blige, or any of the other records with 'London Sessions' in the title (and there will be many, many), it's now 50 years since Iggy Pop and his Stooges sat down to record the now-legendary LP, Raw Power, with sessions taking place (you guessed it), in London. Logically, this extended player collates some of the best versions that didn't make the final cut into one place, and as such is definitely a must for diehard fans and collectors.
Not that others should be put off in anyway. We'd still recommend getting a copy of the original as it was intended to be released. The players designed it that way. But this is also a well-worth owning piece of punk rock history, with unrelenting, unpolished, uncompromising and unapologetic noise sounding as infectious today as it did back then.

Review: Six albums in and Madness had firmly established themselves as part of the British pop firmament when they released Mad Not Mad in 1985. It's a divisive album which captures Suggs' Camden Town likely lads in a period of transition as the 80s wore on and musical styles shifted. Review: Over the course of their epic career, the Rolling Stones has played countless now legendary concerts, though few quite as mythical as the two they held (in secret - fans thought they were going to see a then popular Canadian band) at the tiny El Mocambo Tavern in Toronto in March 1977. This double-disc set presents one of those shows in its entirety for the first time, with the band being joined on stage for the duration by the late, great Billy Preston. It's a genuinely terrific set all told, with the intimacy of the venue and the band's between-song chat adding only adding to the immersive feel. Review: It had been five years since fans had received any new, original material from Marianne Faithful by the time Vagabond Ways landed, and it's safe to say the record was worth the wait. Review: Hi-def mono reissue of Floyd's classic 1967 album, remastered in 2017 from the original analog tapes. Known for its rough, crunchy psych sound that predated the band's later, boundless space rock sensibilities, this is the wall-breakers at their most primordial, and their least beat-around-the-bush. This one's been given an anniversary reissue a whopping three times in a row; of course, we should endeavour not to overlook the more perfunctory, audiophiles' rarities such as this. Make sure you add it to your 'Gates Of Dawn' collection while you can.

Review: Moving away from their two-tone tingles and sauntering silliness, 'The Madness' was a thorough rebrand for the band - exploring a new name, a new sound, a rejumbled lineup, and all the new electronic music tech that te late 80s had to offer. Sounding more like Duran Duran than Madness as we know them, 'The Madness' hears a smattering of guest musicians join the party, including The Specials' Jerry Dammers on piano. It was this LP that caused such a furore at the band's Madstock festival in 1992, that a small earthquake erupted at 4.2 on the Richter scale in the London locale of Finsbury Park.
