Review: The Masaala label are laying claim to a unique curio from the '90s here, unearthing the forgotten sounds of Cutmaster Singh from Leicester. This unsung DJ legend was amongst those trying to fuse acid house and bhangra, and on this 12" we're treated to a selection of edits that do a mighty fine job of crossing the cultural divide to bring the infectious energy of Indian music into a dancefloor context. First up is a dubplate from 1994 titled 'Acid Agah', which rides a bubbling 303 and resplendent strings to create a jaw-dropping showpiece. 'Rani' is steeped in bashy '80s drums and more of that lysergic throbbing, offset by a stunning female vocal, while 'Nachdi Drums' unsurprisingly leans in hard on percussion to whip up a frenetic energy that is as much techno as it is bhangra. 'Balle Shava' takes things back to a kind of new beat freakiness which will appeal to old-skool diggers looking for something spicy in their sets.
Review: Wayfaring sound explorer Sw. is best known for his stellar stints on SUED, Acido and Apollo (often alongside Svn) but he's also got firm roots in the illustrious world of Kimochi. Area's oddball label is a perfect fit for Sw.'s roaming, inquisitive approach, where scuffed sound design exploration sits alongside subdued garage and red-lining electronica faces off with melancholic '80s hauntology. For the bold DJs, there are certainly potential bangers folded into the mysterious fabric of this record, but as with all things Kimochi the overall mood looks past functional dance music while celebrating many of its tropes.
Review: Following the release of his angular, intense and deep debut album, Krona, on Northern Electronics last year, Evigt Morker decided to take his time before unleashing any new material. 5, his first EP since, arrives 13 months later and offers a starker, more uniformly club-centric sound. Of course, these new productions still boast tons of depth and musical texture, as is proved by the grandiose, slowly rising chord progressions and intergalactic rhythms of 'Lossa De Bunda', and the alien-sounding dancefloor hypnotism of 'Hall I Mig', where tight TB-303 loops and gaseous pads wrap around a locked-in techno groove. The EP's most startling moment, though, is a more rugged and robust affair: the gently psychedelic and intense peak-time techno bustle of 'Slunga Aska'.
Review: Aubrey's status as a pillar of underground UK techno comes into focus with this reissue of a 1995 classic from the Solid Groove archives. 'Ginger Biscuit' is a riotous party starter, riding a funked up loop and feverish percussion to make for techno perfection. 'Long Player' is a trippier affair awash with heavy reverb, pads and submerged acid bleeps. 'Shimmer' goes even further out with some shimmering dub techno chords riding elongated filter sweeps for pure eyes closed transcendence. 'U Be Dick' seals the deal with a micro-dub excursion that nudges towards house territory with soaring synth strings to boot. Seminal stuff.
Review: Canadian minimal veteran Tomas Jirku has been a little quiet of late, but now he makes a welcome and unexpected return with something quite different for Silent Season. You can hear echoes of his earlier work in the soundscapes he's sculpted across Touching The Sublime, as high-definition sonic manipulation draws on his experience and eye for detail in wielding music technology, but rather than creating pointillist rhythmic structures, he's more concerned with billowing clouds of ambience. It's easy to draw parallels with the likes of Tim Hecker, but there's space for more techno-oriented productions in the midst of the maelstrom. Epic in scope and powerfully rendered, this is an album that will feed your head for a long time to come.
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Review: Long-serving Swedish producer Joel Mull, previously best-known for his club-focused techno sets, first started work on Nautical Dawn, his first album under his occasional Damm alias, over a decade ago. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of 'nautical dawn' - that point when the sun is not yet above the horizon, but bathes the sky in vivid colours - he wanted to make music for the break of dawn that combined home-made field recordings with suitably drowsy, opaque electronic motifs, slow-burn ambient chords, tactile aural textures and, when the mood took him, horizontal and hypnotic beats. It may have taken him a while, but the resultant set is little less than inspired: an evocative set of enveloping compositions that tease and tingle the senses.
Review: Enduring UK techno legend Surgeon links up with one of the modern scene's most vital labels in Munich's Ilian Tape. His fierce four track spreads mind melting synth work and industrial tinged percussion of a range of BPMs, with 'Place Of Angels' being the most raved up and intense. 'Europa Code' is a much slower and more mindful tune with a snaking rhythm and mysterious leads and 'Crater 101' is the blistering peak time banger any techno set needs. 'Winged Assassin' is our favourite, though, with its nagging synth loops and clattering percussion being a perfect mix of tension and release.
Review: REPRESS ALERT: 'Something From Nothing' is a four tracker that fuses techno sensibility with house swagger, a voice calling to Detroit's Second Wave while a hand beckons the shadowy waters of house.
Hearts Of Darkness are immersed in late nights and smoke-filled basements, with past form seeing them play Fabric and Bugged Out!. An unhealthy loyalty to vintage hardware and long forgotten code means their music is analogue, not for fashion, but because it feels right.
On the A, 'Sequential Circus' is purest machine funk as a driving bass bubbles into self-oscillation. Next, 'Just On For The Ride' bounces to a millennial deep house swing. Flip it for a dense future dub workout in 'Charlie Don't Surf,' then 'Hotshot' closes with a pad soaked vibe for the discerning warm up. A melting pot EP with all the right ingredients.

Review: Malin Genie's purple patch continues to yield more delights with this latest drop on his self-titled label. This time around the prolific Dutch artist is delving into smoky, hidden corners of house music where dub lingers thick in the air and rough textures scuff depth and character into the synth work. "Aventijn" has a purposeful drum machine tick but its utterly somnambulant in its execution, while "KIAR" lilts on a dusty groove and woozy clouds of funk. "Duppy" has a distinct dub techno influence, but it's still a steadfast house groover at heart, and "Amulius Numitor" ditches the beats for a pure interstellar exploration. With some bonus locked grooves for creative DJs, this is a versatile and imaginatively rendered EP with creative spark to match its usefulness in the mix.
Review: James Pennington is the Detroit techno talent who records as the Suburban Knight and has done since the middle of the eighties. He's got plenty of mini-classics to his name such as 'The Groove' and 'Art of Stalking' and now he is back with what amounts to his first solo record in over a decade having previously worked with Inner City and Underground Resistance. Here he offers scintillatingly soulful techno on 'Inner City', which comes with a deeper and more quickened 207737 edit. Reverse the record and you'll find 'Species', an intergalactic techno trip on bumping beats. 'Intel Bombs' (feat Ray 7) closes out with intense drum work and turbocharged stabs.
Review: Trauma Collective returns with four cuts of decidedly hypnotic and abstract techno from ever-prolific ASC. Rounding out the last decade with a string of stand-out releases on his own imprint, Auxiliary, the San Diego producer brings his cerebral sonic aesthetic to the fledgling Madrid label. "Loop Research" showcases a singular artist unbound by tempo and at the top of their game.
Review: Taupe fully reflects the musical concept of Impress project with a first vinyl release for the label. His fresh and innovative sound pairs the soul and futurism of classic Detroit with the best of contemporary techno. This is music for your imagination as music as your body right from the first beat: 'Cronos' is built on an electro framework with sci-fi pads fluttering up top. 'Helion' is much more tethered to the dance floor with its insistent kicks and the turbocharged house of 'Aether' is perfectly smooth and seductive. 'Penthos' rounds out with a meaningful and emotional vibe and plenty of dubbed out production.

Leading the way on The Claudio Gentile Release is a Foolish Felix dub of Cage & Aviary's "Lean On Me" whose deranged acid gurglings provide a nice contrast to the thrusting Escape From East London stylings of Posthuman's "Make More Men". On the flip Ali Renault returns for Rothmans duty with the Weatherall worthy "The Black Heart" whilst Iron Blu is loaned from Flight Recorder for the synthy swamp of orchestral drama that is "Oiche Shamhna"

Review: Russian techno mastermind Anton Kubikov has enjoyed an incredibly productive run that has seen him grace Nervmusic, Mayak and his own Pro-tez label. Now one of his finest works, 'When Is Deep', lands on AE Recordings in four new versions from a cast of top-shelf remixers. Idealist is up first, rolling out a smooth and sublime dub house medication to keep dancers locked in and shuffling, while Ben Buitendijk simmers things down to a hypnotic pulse. Dot kicks off the B-side with an immersive, propulsive techno blend before Thor and Octal Industries complete the set with a quintessential dub techno meditation to take your mind to spell-binding new spheres of exploration.
Review: On the day today tonight, Ethyl & Flori launch their own imprint, E&F Records. With dancefloor focus, EFR001 guarantees crowd reactions reminiscent of Clinton's welcome home after machine-gunning 400 buffalo.
Review: Weapons Of Desire kick off what is presumably a new series of various artist releases under the Machine Funk banger, and do so with a right royal collection of dance music punks. Drvg Cvltvre, for example, is a Dutchman who makes dirt, sleaze and noise an art form in his techno tracks, and the brilliantly brainless 'I Hate Thinking' is proof of that. UK hardware lover Perseus Traxx also brings plenty of lo-fi brilliance to his 'Hi-Tech', while Rennie Foster's 'Deposition Acid' achieves some hypnotic brilliance with the 303. Add in more rough and ready excellence from Type-303 and Bad Outfit and you have a hefty EP.
Review: Fresh from a superb outing on Wisdom Teeth (the wonderfully deep and meditative Terrapin EP), Dwayne Parris-Robinson returns to The Trilogy Tapes for the first time in three years. A-side 'Harajuku Girls' boasts just the right blend of melodic accessibility, dancefloor weight and rhythmic ingenuity, with the Bristol-based producer wrapping a jumpy, UK-funky influenced beat in rumbling bass, fluttering synthesizer motifs and cut-up vocal snippets. He gets dreamier on side B, first combining crunchy, post D&B-beats with seductive ambient chords and chiming melodies on 'Yurei', before brilliantly combining barking dogs, twinkling electronics, hazy chords and dubbed-out breakbeat hardcore beats on the equally as impressive 'Aqua Surge'.

Review: London based Rico Casazza has been sliding out warm, harmonically rich techno for over 10 years now, shoring up on labels such as Bonzai Elemental, Archipel, Stock5, Cartulis Music, Variance and more. On his latest release, which lands on sterling techno imprint Murge Recordings, he's channeling the spirit of Detroit in a plush spread of warm and expressive synth shapes. "Transmutation" is strong in its original configuration, but it's also propped up by some classy remixes from big hitters. Kirk Degiorgio steps up first with a tense, darkside techno workout for the peak of the night. Aubrey then pings things up into a trippy, heavy-rolling workout drawn from the freakier end of the spectrum.
Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.
Review: Brand new label from Almeria, Spain, Masa Series sits precariously between acid, techno, electro and Detroit on this fascinating launch release. Running the full gamut, we start with the brittle electro of Natural Language and Texture's ice cold 'Blitzar' before descending into squat party chaos on 6tma's 'Robert De Lirio'. Flip for the soul soothing electro of Tony & Hawk's 'Who Lands Drones' before Roger Van Lunteren closes the show with the swashbuckling big beats and acid off 'Red (Touchee)', a track that wouldn't have gone amiss in the Heavenly Social back in the day. Review: 19 years ago, DJ Technics oversaw the production of Queens of Baltimore Club, a double album of weighty B-More club tracks built around female vocals and vocal samples. Originally copies are now extremely hard to find, so the newly launched Butter Notes label has decided to press up a single slab of wax featuring some of the album's most potent jams. Highlights include the cheeky B-more-does-classic-hip-house hedonism of Kotton the Cutie's 'I Just Wanna', the heat and heavy intensity of Mz Thang's 'Shake Ya Dick', the stab-sporting sweatiness of Ms Mocha's 'Not The Boss' and the heavily-edited, build-heavy hype of Lady Shanuda's 'Stuck', which packs insane levels of excitement into four action-packed minutes.
Review: Big room techno lovers behold, Vinicius Honorio has you covered. The Brazilian artist constructs gigantic tracks designed to rattle walls on this new EP for Fiedeltwo, and it comes after he's amassed a fine discography of similar material for Drumcode, Suara and Planet Rhythm. 'Brainwash' opens with slamming drums and waves of synth constantly washing over you, while 'Pandora's Box' is a more stripped back and Luke Slater style melodic techno head wrecker. 'Just Another Acid Track' is anything but - the squelching 303 sounds popping out of a train track groove and eventually making way for clanking industrial monster 'Naughty.'
Review: En Couleur is the brand new label from long time German techno heavyweight Loco Dice. His mighty Desolat label has been a main concern for years, but now he heads back into the underground with more challenging sounds. 'Don't Run' is dark and menacing, with unsettling vocals and twisted tech house drums. 'Nasty Train' is a tune full of tension that never revolves, so keeps you locked into its wiry synth loops and dry, scratchy drums. Last of all, 'Ya Free Just Move' keeps you in a state of unease with its manic acid, bleak vocals and high pressure drums.
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.
