Review: Fargo Year Five is the fifth instalment of the acclaimed series Fargo and it debuted on screens back in November 21, 2023, and rolled out ten more gripping episodes. Continuing the tradition, Jeff Russo crafted the captivating music for this season, as he did for the preceding four. Notably, Russo clinched the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special in 2017 for his exceptional work on Fargo. Besides his prowess in television composition, Russo is revered as one of the founding members of the band Tonic, showcasing his multifaceted talent across various facets of the music industry, and this score is as good as all the ones that came before it.

Review: It's surprisingly not that common for a director to pick music for their movie. There are accomplished experts at scouring and sourcing the most powerful and moving tunes for cinema, and, of course, composers who have established themselves as maestros of silver screen scores. Luca Guadagnino is an exception to the rule, then, with his coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, soundtracked via his choices. And what choices they are. The film itself is beautiful and incredibly moving, adjectives which also apply to the accompanying sounds. From the theatrical pop of Loredana Berte, to the staggering instrumentation of Ryuichi Sakamoto and heartfelt cries of Sufjan Stevens, this collection of tones is as varied as it is captivating from beginning to end, and - whether you've seen the flick or not - deserves a place on everyone's shelf.

Review: Eddie Harris was an iconic American jazz musician who revolutionised the genre by introducing the electrically amplified saxophone. With a prolific career spanning over 50 albums, Harris seamlessly blended jazz with funk, earning Grammy Award nominations for two of his groundbreaking records. Among them, the 1983 release People Get Funny..s' stands out. Featuring tracks like 'People Get Funny When They Get A Little Money' and 'La Carnival' which exemplify his signature jazz-funk fusion with captivating vocals and scatting, it las has other gems like 'Silver Plated,' which showcase a more traditional jazz-hard-bop style. Accompanied by talented musicians like drummer Carl Burnett, electric pianist William S. Henderson III, and bassist Larry Gales, this limited edition release of People Get Funny... is pressed on translucent pink vinyl.

Review: US3's debut album Hand On The Torch was a landmark record when it dropped back in 1993. At a time when the world was getting to grips with sample culture, Blue Note reached out to the London-based crew and gave them access to the archives. With such a rich pool of source material, they got busy strapping iconic breaks and licks from one of the great jazz stables to crisp beats. There's a lot of ground covered, with hip-hop jams sidling up alongside funky beatdowns and plenty more besides. It's a stone cold classic given the reissue treatment, bringing the likes of 'Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)' back to life for a new generation.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

Spanning over two hours, this mix showcases the genre's continued diversity and evolution and features tracks from both established artists and rising talents. With seamless transitions and expertly curated selections, van Buuren captures the essence of the trance scene in 2023 with all the usual hallmarks - from uplifting melodies to driving beats, euphoric atmospheres to epic synth lines. As such this it a must-listen and more proof no one quite knows the genre like Armin.

Review: In a discography that is jam packed with high quality albums, Miles Davis's Sorcerer is one of the standouts. Now newly reissued by Music on Vinyl, it transports listeners into the heart of 1967's avant-garde jazz landscape when it was originally released as part of Davis's Second Great Quintet era. The music showcases the maestro's pioneering fusion of modal jazz and free improvisation from the enigmatic title track to the haunting Prince of Darkness. Davis and his ensemble craft a sonic tapestry that mesmerises with every note here and Wayne Shorter's evocative saxophone, Herbie Hancock's masterful piano, and Tony Williams's dynamic drumming all help make that so.

Review: Krush's eighth - and last - album Jaku is up there with Endtroducing and Donuts in terms of seminal, influential and forward-thinking beat longer players. 10 years since its release and it still sounds as timeless, unique and exciting as it did in 2004. The slick licks of a young Mr Lif on "Nosferatu", the post-apocalyptic tension of "Univearth" the sludgy, swampy cosmic hip-hop of the Aesop Rock-featured "Kill Switch" and the unashamed sax sex of "Slit Of Cloud"..... Do we need to go on? Limited edition, 180g transparent vinyl; even if you already have this in your collection this is a very, very appealing investment.

Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. With the Roots Radics as the backing band and the likes of Earl Sixteen and Watty Burnett on backing vocals, the cast of characters is steeped in reggae's golden era, and sure enough the sound is as good as you'd expect. This welcome reissue comes on yellow vinyl - a beam of sunshine as uplifting as the riddims carved into the grooves.

Review: We can only begin to image how Silverchair felt taking to the stage at Chicago's legendary Cabaret Metro. It's 1994, and the band aren't even old enough to buy a drink (members are still only 15), but their spectacular debut, Frogstomp, has already positioned them as Australia's great post-grunge hope, meaning a venue famed for seminal shows by scene deities like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins - among others - would mean the world to the young upstarts.
Live was the resulting album, initially released on promotional CD only, packing seven tracks of pure on-stage energy, cacophony, and guitar-first dirt, alongside a special bonus bit at the end. Available now for the first time ever on black plastic, with just 5000 copies pressed, it's what you might call a veritable piece of 1990s rock history.

It drew together all their finest moments from the proceeding decade but gets the full reissue treatment here with limited numbered gatefold 180 gram and coloured wax. The Belgian rock band hail from Antwerp and in their heyday mixed up alt-rock, post-grunge and folk rock on a series of albums that went gold and platinum in various countries around the world. This collection has all the big, stadium-sized tunes as well as the more quiet moments of introspective calm. It's a great reminder of a band that had a big impact at the turn of the millennium.

Review: With roots in a band called Shake Appeal, who were informed by The Stooges and MC5, among other late-60s garage rockers, by the time we got to Mezcal Head, Swervedriver's second album, the group had turned their attention to what was blowing up Stateside. Taking a lead from the likes of Dinosaur Jr and - to less of a wall of sound extent - Sonic Youth, they combined elements of then fertile grunge and shoegaze scenes, to make a noisy but coherent whole. Released in 1993, the sophomore record first hit on the mighty Creation Records, which is a seal of approval if ever there was one. While still failing to really penetrate the mainstream, everyone from NME to Alternative Press heaped praise on the work, and listening back it's easy to hear why. Rough and ready guitar work meets a lackadaisically cool atmosphere, energy like a coiled spring at times.

Review: "If you had four songs ready-ish, you would record them there and then and put them all out ASAP. No such thing as 'saving songs for the album' back then," says Swervedriver's Jimmy Hartridge of life in a rock 'n' roll band during the early-1990s, late-1980s. The philosophy certainly explains a lot about urgency at the time, and why the band's debut album only featured six original songs in the end. 'Rave Down', 'Son of a Mustang', and 'Sandblasted' all featured on shorter releases amid a flurry of activity that saw four EPs hit between 1990 and 1991, leading up to the big reveal. Perhaps what's remarkable is the fact this approach didn't detract from sales, but instead build anticipation and hunger. When it finally landed, Raise was heralded as one of the finest moments in shoegaze at the time, with the grungier, garage-y, alt-rock tones the outfit would soon be known for are already audible.

Review: Named after an episode of The Goons and following in the wake of fellow Strourbridge bands The Wonderstuff and Pop Will Eat Itself, Ned's Atomic Dustbin were as famous for their 'one side shaved' haircut as their music, although their two bass player line up gave them a unique sound of sorts. 'Are You Normal?' was the second of their three studio albums, and catches the band breaking away from their trademark 'grebo' grooving to exoeirment with electronics and sampling.

Their debut album came in 1967 but it is their second and last full length The Miraculous Hump Returns From The Moon from 1973 that gets reissued here. Fans consider it a next level work which might explain why a good copy of an original will cost you a few quid these days. It's a record - and really one of the lost classics of the era - that has stood the test of time and still bangs today for the way it so uniquely mixes up FM schmaltz, prog-rock, jazz, showtunes, Krautrock and Indian classical music.

They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.

Review: Before we even get to the music, shall we talk about this album title? Easily up there with the best named records of all time, thankfully this is matched in the quality of the music itself. All-British blues rock 'n' roll at its grittiest and funkiest, and most musically impressive. A showcase of exquisite guitar and piano work, and songwriting, marks the debut of Chicken Shack, the group founded by Stan Webb, Andy Silvester, and Alan Morley, who also enlisted Christine Perfect, later Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Comprising ten predominantly rather short tracks (most are around three minutes), this format only leaves us wanting more as the record plays out. There's the classic heartbroken ode 'Lonesome Whistle Blues', the fraught six string solos of 'See See Baby', and the rowdy bar-in-a-track that is 'San Ho Zay' to get you started, but really everything on here is gold.

Review: American jazz fusion outfits don't come much more venerated than Weather Report. Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

Review: Martin Scorsese's Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues series may not be the Academy Award-winning director's most famous contribution to popular culture, but the PBS documentary film saga, in which the legendary director takes us on a journey through the development of a sound he holds dear to his heart, is well worth looking for. Featuring luminaries such as John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters, and more, each episode welcomes a different filmmaker, allowing them to refocus on artists they love. For this album spin-off, we centre attention on the mighty Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of the most influential of all blues musicians who tragically died at the age of 35 in a helicopter crash. Although far younger than many of the greats he's often listed alongside, his exceptional abilities on the guitar, and often unique sonics, set him apart from almost anyone else, alive or dead. Listen to what we mean here.

Review: WHODINI's Open Sesame album is a perfect example of the best of 1980s hip-hop. It showcases the group's pioneering blend of catchy beats, slick rhymes, and infectious energy. Originally back released in 1987, the album features iconic tracks like 'Funky Beat' and 'Rock You Again (Again & Again).' With its innovative production and charismatic performances, 'Open Sesame' solidified WHODINI's status as one of the most influential groups in the genre. From start to finish, the album exudes a sense of excitement and creativity, leaving a lasting impact on hip-hop music which means it might sound of its time but it remains a classic and an essential listen for any fan of old-school rap.

Review: Music On Vinyl are our new best friends. With a wide range of music being reissued as of late, Yello's 1987 One Second is just spoiling us. Never being fully acclaimed when it was originally released, this is one album which really spans the full circle in terms of artistic ideas sonic experimentations. While being tagged primarily as a pop work, it's really more of a lesson in synth manipulations and nutty beat-making. "The Rhythm Divine" has to be out top track but do check the whole thing, it's magnificent...

Review: Music On Vinyl return with another blinding reissue by composer Philip Glass! Heroes Symphony, or sometimes referred to as Symphony No.4, was created by Glass back in 1996 as an accompaniment to David Bowie's Heroes album. It's not necessarily one of his better known works but it contains that familiar Glassian mystique and musical freedom which characterises so many of his classical productions.

The record has a sure place in hip-hop history and has since it was originally released in 1994. The album showcases the duo's famous and unparalleled chemistry, with Pete Rock's soulful production and CL Smooth's smooth lyricism blending seamlessly on tracks that continue to resonate with listeners and very much capture the essence of 90s hip-hop while still remaining relevant today. Following the likes of Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange? and Theme V: Passion comes Istruttoria E Chiusa: Dimentichi from this renowned composer. The film was a 1971 Italian crime drama directed by Damiano Damiani and for it Morricone crafted an obscure score to the thriller which went on to be globally admired by fans and critics alike. A couple of tunes here were not used in the final film having been recorded in the original session and they are the B2 and B3, which both need hearing.

Review: Paul Young had already spent plenty of time in the game fronting The Q Tips before he broke out solo in the early 80s, but it was this album which took him to the top of the charts in 1985. Finding a unique niche between soul, funk, rock and pop, it was the gravelly bite of his voice which hit home with the fans, yielding hit after hit. 'Every Time You Go Away' and 'I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down' are the big bangers, but the rest of the album is packed full of classics too. This special extended edition of the album comes with extended versions, live tracks and other obscurities to delight the fans.

Review: To truly understand what's happening here you first need to know the background. Snowflakes Are Dancing is the delightfully evocative and - let's face it - wonderfully endearing title of Isao Tomita's second studio album. But this isn't really the Japanese musician's own work. Instead, it takes the arrangements of Claude Debussy, particularly the French composer's so-called 'tone paintings', and splashes new colour across the palette by way of some modern toys.

So while the guy who wrote the notes did so in the midst of industrialisation in Europe, his interpreter from the Far East worked on those tunes at a point in time when modernism was in full swing, and marching forward so quickly the future was already in sight. Using a Moog synthesiser, still then very much an experimental toy, and Mellotron, the result is an electronic overture worthy of the best sci-fi scores.

Review: Elvis Costello's 12th album originally surfaced in 1989, enjoying particular success in the US, and gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Music on Vinyl here. Two of the songs - 'Pads, Paws and Claws' and the hit single 'Veronica' - included actually came from extensive co-writing sessions with Paul McCartney. Recorded in Hollywood; New Orleans, Dublin and London, the album finds Costello in typically incisive lyrical mood, opposing capital punishment on 'Let Him Dangle' and expressing a desire to live long enough to witness the death of Margaret Thatcher on the legendary 'Tramp The Dirt Down'.

All the most iconic gems are here by the lies of Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracle, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and Billy Preston & Syreeta amongst many more.

Review: Much like the Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow were as much a product of Malcolm McLaren's commercial nous and love of provocation as they were a band, but with the passage of time you can hear their music in a different light. Made up of former Adam & The Ants members and teenage singer Annabella Lwin, they whipped up a powerful twist on the new wave template in which Burundi-style drumming, twanging Americana and post-punk scratchiness collided with pop hooks. If you can't get enough of that era of music, you will surely love discovering or re-discovering this breakthrough album from one of popular music's true curios.

Janky and fairlight-hued, as was the case with much of 80s dance music, the music pines after sex like an object to be pursued in and of itself. "You make me want to have sex" goes the refrain of opener 'Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi', while 'Sex Up' continues the charge with a dubby, Balearic remix, continuing the mantra throughout the album. A fantastic look back on a weird and provocative duo.

Review: In 1982 L.J. Reynolds released his second solo album Travelin', which was a split production between Reynolds and Don Davis. This classic soul album includes "Trust In Me", "Say You Will" and "Call Me", the latter being written by Aretha Franklin. Travelin' features guest performances by Bernie Worrell and William "Bootsy" Collins. A classic soul album for your ears' sultrier side.

Review: Australian alternative rock band The Church put out their sixth studio album in 1990. It's best known for the breakout rock hit 'Metropolis' and performed commercially well overall after the successes of 1988 hit album Starfish, Gold Afternoon Fix . An interesting nugget for fact fans is that this album is their first of the band's not to feature a 12 string guitar as Marty Wilson-Piper's instrument got stolen on a previous tour. The subtle change in sound didn't derail the band and they continued to pick up more and more fans for their lilting grooves and lyrical subjects such as love, loss and plenty in between. The band were induced into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010.

Review: To celebrate the 25th birthday of their celebrated debut album, A New Sound Spectacular, the Belgian band has decided to offer-up this selection of long-forgotten remixes of two tracks from the set, '2Wicky' and 'Inhaler', both of which were originally released on now delated 12" singles. The A-side highlight is undoubtedly DJ Pulse's terrifically spacey drum & bass revision of '2Wicky', though the heavy trip-hop psychedelia of the 'Not So Extended Hoovering' version is also surprisingly good. Over on the flip, you'll find two more D&B-inspired takes on 'Inhaler': a wonderfully deep and jazzy 'Mr Pink' revision courtesy of Pierre Job AKA Hector Zazou, and the band's own string-laden 'Drum & Orch' revision.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** For the uninitiated: Billy Cobham is a Panamanian-American jazz drummer, composer and bandleader. He is also the brother of multi instrumentalist Wayne Cobham. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. Produced with the legendary Jan Hammer (a former bandmate) and engineer Ken Scott in 1973, Spectrum was Cobham's first solo album after leaving his previous group Mahavishnu Orchestra. The album was heavily influenced by the music of Miles Davis, with whom Cobham had previously collaborated extensively. A seminal album of the jazz fusion scene. A Swiss resident since 1980s, Cobham now lives in Schoepfen, a canton near Bern.

Review: The Revolutionaries were named The Revolutionaries because dub music is itself resistant and defiant. Specifically, dub resists colonial English powers by staunchly remaining 'rooted' in tradition. Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare knew this, so rather than simply being absorbed into the system, they chose to bleed it out from the inside. 'The Outlaw', the band's 21st LP, describes the kind of internal revolution dub brings to all minds and hearts. All tunes on The Outlaw describe the interior condition of most dub artists, who truly operate outside the law.

Review: A Very Spidey Christmas was first released only on digital platforms back in 2018. It entails five of the Christmas tunes that were first recorded for the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. There is the lovely holiday song 'Spidey-Bells (A Hero's Lament)' by Chris Pine, who is also behind the festive 'Up On The House Top'. Other cast members such as Shameik Moore appear on 'Joy To The World', with Jake Johnson doing a fine turn on 'Deck The Halls' and Jorma Taccone on 'The Night Before Christmas 1967'. These are fun tunes with plenty of warming festive cheer on crystal clear vinyl 10" picture disc that is going to send collectors wild.

Review: Los Angeles glam metal superstars, Warrant, had their biggest success with this Cherry Pie album. It's the band's second full-length and it contains two of their biggest top 40 charting singles. Both the title track and the cheeky anthem, 'I Saw Red', catapulted their name into the 80s-turned-90s rock stratosphere, while the somewhat infantile humour, braggadocios attitude, and hidden intrigue of deeper cuts such as, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', would signal the more abstract lyricism and clever song-writing tropes that would be more fleshed out and fully realised by the time 1992's seminal, 'Dog Eat Dog', arrived. This reissue comes on nice heavyweight vinyl.

Review: Huge guitar solos, a not-so-subtle hint of seduction and romance, rousing choruses and an attitude that screams: "I'm gonna make that heavy metal hand signal every five or six minutes." Warrant may not be the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to the heyday big room, sexually charged glam metal, but when all is said and done they did pretty well during their seven years in the game.
Emerging from the Los Angeles scene of the mid-late-1980s, a city that has a lot to answer for in these musical ends, by the time they packed up their Fenders and called time more than 10million albums had been sold, with the double-platinum Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich the real gem of the lot. Dog Eat Dog came along a little later, in 1992, and by this point the group had really got into gear. Don't expect the same tangible hunger and impact as the inaugural effort, then, but in many ways this is far more complete example of what they were gunning for.

Review: It's pretty hard these days to keep up with all the different new Spider-Man movies, but you should try because somehow they all seem to be pretty good despite it being such a well-worn character. The music, too, always manages to reach new levels as did this, the original soundtrack for the 2017 version, Spider-Man: Homecoming, by Michael Giacchino. It is full of dramatic and wide-screen orchestration, sweeping strings and rousing musical adventure but also the more quiet moments of reflection and tenderness. This version comes with a poster in a deluxe sleeve on blue vinyl.

This new collection is compiled from the vast array of Jamaican artists, groups and its diaspora and gets form the genres early days right through its many subtle evolutions. As such it incudes gems from Jimmy Cliff, sonnet cold classics from Third World, Peter Tosh and Toots & The Maytals, some seductive lovers-rock from Dennis Brown, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Gregory Isaacs and and chart topping hit from Althea & Donna in the form of 'Uptown Top Ranking'.

Review: The Fall's Mark E. Smith was having a rather torrid time even by his own standards when the band made The Marshall Suite in 1999. He was fresh back from a US tour on which he had been fighting with fellow band members on stage and was later arrested after carrying on the shenanigans back at the hotel. The album itself builds on the techno sounds The Fall had explored on the preceding album Levitate but also with something of a return to the rockabilly-influenced sound from earlier Fall line-ups. Cuts like 'The Crying Marshal' are as strange and complex as they come with thumping jungle drums powering it along.

Review: Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora became known as "the barefoot diva" because, well, you guessed it, she often used to perform on stage with no shoes on. Her sounds are often classed as world music and she often sang in her native Cape Verdean creole but also on occasion in French and Portuguese, always with a certain melancholic aura. Her Distino di Belita album was a second studio long player with Jose da Silva and it includes a mix of her signature acoustic mournas and electric-coladeras as well as her most popular tunes, the superb 'Nova Sintra' and moving 'Distino di Bilita'.

Review: Ministry have always enjoyed playing with album titles - 1989's The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste being one of the best examples. They've also evolved from a synth pop outfit at the turn of that decade into one of the pre-eminent industrial rock and metal bands of the following ten years, a process that helps them stand out among a scene that became increasingly saturated as time progressed.

Never by-numbers, then, and always looking to experiment with effects, samples, and structure, on stage their reputation for being uncompromisingly Ministry precedes them, and here's at least some form of proof. Sphinctour (lol) is an 11 track album containing recordings from various live shows across the globe, each of which invokes the atmosphere and gargantuan power of the outfit in question, with the only real problem being the fact you probably weren't there to see these shows happen.
