Review: Italian big-room techno maestros Mind Against are at the top of their game right now, riding high after their landmark Fabric Presents full-length and launching their Habitat Recordings label last year. Following on from the Metaflora compilation and releases from kindred souls Sideral and Dyzen, they come through with a powerful single-sided single in collaboration with TSHA and Nimmo which has one eye squarely on the charts. It's an epic, vocal-led techno cut charged with emotive synths that will sound absolutely massive on big stages when festival season rolls around.

Bishop Jeff Banks & The Revival Temple Mass Choir - "Jerusalem" (New edit)
Review: 'Praise' was first released under the Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell banner in 2013 as a full package of CD-bound gospel-house transcenders. Part of the Gospel Music According To Joe Claussell series, the moment marked the apogee of the DJ and producer's stint in the world of edits and overdubs, after which he'd move into spiritual house musics of a less sample-based making. Now, however, we return to 'Praise' with two special edits cut to a limited edition 12" sampler, harkening a return to the form and a bigger box set in the series to come, a decade on; first we're met with Myrna Summers and her choir on 'So Much To Live For', which lays bare the holy-ghostly hooks and kick-clapped stamps; then there's a similar edit of Bishop Jeff Banks' 'Jerusalem', which whips out the Hammonds and sopranos for the B.

Review: The prolific Dutch powerhouse that is Conforce (aka Versalife aka Boris Bunk amongst other things) is in techno mode here with this new green-marbled 12" on Syncrophone. Commuting Part 1 opens with the quick-stepping and deep dub techno rhythms of 'Octave Echoes' which is delightfully fluid. 'Stable Velocity' then bids up impossible smooth dub loops and watery pads into something buoyant and stirring both physically and emotionally, and 'Self Assessment' then ups the pace with thudding, infectious kicks and plenty of rippling synth details. 'Highway Hypnosis takes a more paranoid and stripped-back approach and closes out Conforce's finest EP in some time.

Review: Singer, songwriter, former Navy sailor and Oklahoma native Zach Bryan first rose to fame in 2019 with his self-released debut country album DeAnn. Bryan's raw storytelling approach attracted a dedicated following, justifying many follow-ups - his latest EP Summertime Blues included. Something of a sibling piece to the recent album American Heartbreak, the EP deploys sweet vocal lilts, banjo strums and fiddle bowings to channels many brooding, blue-collar emotions, reflecting lives lived on the road and bittersweet days gone by.

Hurry Up Tomorrow
Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Review: Named after the classic Czech sci-fi animated film of the same name, veteran producer DIN returns as the nextmost focus of the Coming From Returning To label, who offer up a fresh reissue of his 1992 techno classic. Then five good years into the alias (DIN was formed in 1987), producer Pupka Frey began making his distinct brand of electro-disko as a personal exploration of futuristic and analog dance textures. This EP is an 'artificial' alt soundtrack to the movie, which was otherwise histrionic and over-funky for the tastes of most techno enjoyers. Highlights here have got to be the glassy 'B-Minis' and the opening 'Travesty' (the tune's ironically anything but).

Review: The history of hip-hop has always had some disagreements on who started what and in the creation and evolution of the genre. One piece of history that seems to get overlooked is the transition from radio to TV that helped the music move from a regional activity to a national and cultural phenomenon. While the big New York radio stations took the credit, Spectrum City was doing its own thing just down the road. Not only did it feature a show by Dre Dre and T-Money (which would later evolve it to MTV YO Raps!) but it showcased the birth of Public Enemy as well. Originally released in 2021 on promo, these tracks pay respect to Public Enemy's earlier days when the original group was just getting started at Spectrum City, and if you'reconfused by the name Enemy Radio, note that the legendary rap crew changed to it after the departure of Flavor Flav from the group.

Engineered and executed in the style of an oldskool space disco cut - one which bears the same cover-artistic hallmarks - it's also a crossover electro/Italo release. Produced by Manu Archeo and remixed by Pellegrino in full progressive house stylee on the flip, this is a beautiful replication of the electro-disco essence.

Released on the strong French label House Puff, the EP showcases the artists' mastery of atmospheric melodies and infectious rhythms. Rama To NY' transports listeners to the golden era of New York house with its nostalgic synths and energetic beats while 'United Freedom Inc' captivates with its pulsating bassline and groovy vocals. 'Jacuzzi Days' provides a mellow conclusion that is perfect for winding down the night. With its seamless blend of classic house elements and contemporary influences, Jacuzzi Days EP offers some great dancefloor house music.

Review: It's been a wee while since we last heard from Rory Hamilton AKA Hammer, whose formative releases on Bicep's Feel My Bicep label were special to say the least. This is, we think, the Northern Irish producer's first solo EP for almost five years. He starts in style with 'Swerve', a pulsating slab of house-powered body music rich in sequenced bass, shimmering chords and saucer-eyed melodies, before opting for a deeper, tech-tinged and analogue-rich Italo-disco-goes-deep-house sound on 'Swivel'. Over on side B, 'Tbilisi' is a hushed, warehouse-ready affair full of sweat-soaked cymbals, restless square wave bass and vocal stabs, while 'Push Repeat' sees him pepper another sturdy house beat with melodic motifs and quietly moody pads.

Review: Before I Die have been putting out some high-grade leftfield delights from respected operators like Bernardino Femminelli, Tungusku and most recently Sewell & The Gong. Now it's the turn of Klangkollektor, indulging a collection of hazy dub excursions which sit somewhere near Balearic splendour, piano-charged melancholy and isolation tank meditation. In the dub tradition the approach is consistent and evenly paced, but it's certainly not aiming for any kind of typical Jamaican sound. Instead, there's a gentle introspection to the melodic content which gels perfectly with the spacious approach to mixing, unfurling across four sides of wax for an album you can just melt into.

Review: Fresh from fine outings on Razor N Tape Reserve, Royal Oak and Nervous Chill, prolific producer Felipe Gordon makes his bow on French label Phonogramme. While the Colombian producer made his name with a jazz-funk-flecked brand of warming deep house, these days his EPs tend to showcase more subtle variety. That's certainly the case here, as he first gives his take on Latin-flecked jazz-house (the superb 'Who's Gonna Be', which makes great use of vintage female vocal snippets), before flitting between gorgeous, piano-laden deep house (the similarly jazzy, sample-heavy 'Wait On You (Say Goodbye)'), bluesy deep house haziness ('Keep Doing What You Love'), and hypnotic excellence (title track 'Phasing The Shit', where warped electronic motifs, woozy chords and crispy cymbal hits catch the ear).

The aptly titled Confusion/Chaos/Misery serves as the first piece of new material from the group since their 2009 True Nihilist EP, and offers a feral barrage of unhinged, D-beat inspired scathing hardcore fury. Whilst the members have kept busy in a myriad of equally impressive projects such as All Pigs Must Die, Hesitation Wounds, and Paint It Black (to name but a small handful), time felt fitting for them to regroup with Converge's Kurt Ballou at the iconic God City Studios to lay down this sonic curbstomp of a return, complete with a vicious cover of 'Dogfight' by Swedish crust-punk legends Anti Cimex as closer. The title number is a cover version of the yacht rock classic 'Georgy Porgy', with Nautilus' version heard performed alongside UK-based vocalist songwriter and vocalist John Turrell, one half of Smoove & Turrell, and German legend Toni-L. Theirs is a slick and maximised rendition. On the flipside is a similar classic versioning; a sweet cover version of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together', albeit this time coming with the vocal talents of Japanese singer Keyco and brought with it a crisp, headroomy neo-soulful bent.

Happy Moon (Flemming Dalum Special remix)
Review: Mike Rogers's 'Happy Moon' is something of an Italo disco rarity from 1986, as any real heads will know. If you weren't aware, you will now be able to pretend that you knew about this gem all along by copping the reissue from ZYX which is a whole lot more affordable than an OG copy. What's more, yes, on the A-side there is the rare original version, but that's not all, because on side two are some new and exclusive remixes by
Flemming Dalum that update the classic with a contemporary twist.

Review: Four years ago, Timmy Regisford and Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell delivered a hush-hush 12" single featuring their versions of Nina Simone classic 'Blackbird'. It has become something of a sought-after single, hence this limited-edition reissue. Regisford kicks things off with a fine rework that places Simone's iconic vocals atop a bouncy Afro-house beat and warming deep house instrumentation, before Claussell lays down two 'Edits and Overdubs' versions: a jacking but musically expansive main mix - all drum machine fills, organ solos and sonic spirituality - and a 'Bonus Beats Organ Dub' that sees him lace killer keys atop an infectious house groove. 'Rebel Nina', a spoken word spirit lifted from a vintage Simone interview, completes an essential EP.

Review: Various cumbia compilations are jostling for the limelight at present, but perhaps one of the headsier ones to potentially divert your attention is this latest from Rocafort. This time diving into the Discos Tropical Records vaults, the label bring together a compelling six-track array of Latin fruits, with songs from Pacho Galan Y Su Orquesta, Cuarteto Del Monaco and Andres Landero Y Su Conjunto all in tow. The second of the Cumbia Sabrosa series, these are readymade, tailored soundsystem bangers, doing thorough justice to the woofers despite their now vintage rust n' dust.

Review: Part 2 of the Wave Modulation Series is here. This time the troupe presents a fine release from Gimmik, with remixes from Moy, Sound Synthesis and Naqare Lucid. The central number is 'Analog Dream Plants', which commands a uniquely well-rounded, full-bodied sense of space (it's so organic, even the hi-hats have bass) while reflecting the more repititious elements found in nature by way of lilting two-tones, analog synth ostinati, and, muted vocal murmurations. The quality is kept up almost effortlessly, with dreamy transitions into spacey electro from both Gimmik and Moy, all while Naqara Liquid indulges an equally lovely, but toothier, IDM interpretation.

Review: Following up the digi in 2023, Italy's Muovo Musica bring the edgy jukey electro stylings of Dove Quiete's 'So I Ride' EP to 12" vinyl, doing thorough justice to this sparse sonic tonic, which borders on a skweee temperament. The title track is both jitterbugging and propulsive, fitting in reams off bass beneath its earcatching toppy snaps; then things get increasingly weird, with 'My Jordan' working in childish laughs and indecipherable hahas between the woodblocks, and 'Something For' going full-on acid blues remix; all in all, we get the impression of a weirdo's favourite, one that nonetheless knows exactly the kinds of uncanny emotions it hopes to solicit.

It is a superb trip through a number of decades and finds core members Mark Eason and Fergus Crockford distilling slow tempos, experimental sounds, dub, and much more into leftfield rhythms for body and mind.

Review: Berlin based organ band Otto return with a flitty two-tracker in the Italo vein, 'Wir Kommen' and 'Elixier' being the two sonic cases in point. Topping up the label's Maximal Super Sound sub-discog, the tracks are equally as riveting as they are buzzing. The first is vocoder-laden, cold, brittle and icy, yet somehow warms in equal measure through its slightly rhythmically offset leads and pads. 'Elixier', meanwhile, lolls and ironicizes away into a kind of auditory mad-hatter's pleasure garden, getting far weirder with it via carefully delayed popcorn stabs and rainmaker-esque, cascading sounds in the breakdown.

Side-1 starts with 'Pushing My Buttons,' exuding a tribal mood with proto-house influences and a dramatic disco aura. 'In Motion' follows with a great vocal performance, blending disco, soul, and emotional elements into a laid-back yet uplifting message. On Side-2, 'In Motion' receives a refreshing remix by Maltitz Balearic Acid House, focusing on the melody while infusing techy moments and a captivating bassline, complemented by an added acid line. Review: Composed, produced and mixed entirely by Javier Salazar, this one one on REDG Tribe takes you way beneath the surface to kick off with. 'Tides' is a roomy and spacious dub with a gentle rhythm that slowly unfolds and locks you in as subtle shards of light pierce the surface way up above. The Mohlao is just as deft but more busy, with prickly hits and scurrying synth adding devisal to the dub caverns. A version then sits somewhere in between the two while closer 'Ital' is a smoky dub with muttered vocals adding to the allure. A tasteful and soothing EP for sure.

Review: Fad-free French house label Skylax has always done its own thing, and always to a great reception amongst serious heads. This new one from Quasar is an impossibly perfect mix of physical drums and heart-aching vocal hooks. The pitched up female vocal conveys such bittersweet pain it doesn't matter the words she sings as you're immediately drawn in for the ride. 'For Your Love' is another hugely emotional cut with floating breakbeats and nagging vocals that really get you where it hurts. 'Morning Bells' is a deep house cut with a spritely groove and blissed out vocal, and 'Inside My Love' closes with more heavy analogue drums but no less of a heartfelt sound thanks to the melancholic pads.

Review: While he generally doesn't get the plaudits lavished on some of his Motor City contemporaries, Gari Romalis has long been one of Detroit's most reliable deep house producers (remarkably, he released his first EP 29 years ago). His latest four-tracker, for the reliable Phonogramme Records, is packed to the rafters with spacey, immersive, ultra-deep body music of the sort that moves the heart and head as much as the feet. For proof, check the dub-flecked deep house/tech-house fusion of 'Detroit V.I.P' - all subterranean bass, ghostly chords, rolling house beats and delay-flecked spoken word vocals - and the similarly minded but more percussively energetic 'Scatter Dance'. Elsewhere, 'Stay Ready' is thickset, trippy and hypnotic, while 'City Under Siege' is marginally brighter and breezier whilst remaining formidably deep.

Review: Susy Pintus's Fragile is an archetypal slice of Italo-disco that captivates with its ethereal synths and sultry vocals. Released in 1986 and now reissued in 2024, this timeless track exudes an atmosphere of sensuality and nostalgia. 'Fragile' is a mesmerizing ballad that showcases Pintus's vocal prowess and the genre's ability to elicit both exhilaration and melancholy. 'Live For Your Love,' is more for the dancefloor with a captivating synth line that weaves through a tapestry of pop melodies. The remix of Fragile infuses the track with a more dance-oriented groove, while the 'Live For Your Love' remix dials up the energy with driving rhythms and soaring synths. This is a great example of the enduring appeal of Italo-disco. Its infectious melodies, seductive lyrics and dreamy atmosphere continue to resonate with listeners decades later.

Review: First released in 1988 on the fittingly occultic-in-name Kaos Dance Records, 'Something Scary' is the debut EP (originally 12") by Belgian new beat/acid formation Zsa Zsa Laboum. Evincing a genre specificity that not even the average obsessive can muster, the eponymous track heard here has gone down in history as one of the quintessences of the hard beat microsound. 'Something Scary' nails it all; a deep fried, horrific acid line serves as the main engine for a mortal confrontation in sound, peppered throughout by FM cascades, sparse resampled djembe, and ghostly murmurations verging on EVP pickups. The EP is here lent a full on rejig, with a brand new instrumental reconstruction released here alongside two fresh smokeout versions from Anatolian Weapons.

Review: The late, great Nathan Coles is rightly hailed as UK tech house royalty - an originator in the scene who embodied its headsy, underground energy in the long and winding years before the sound broke through to its ubiquitous popularity it enjoys now. Of the many projects he turned his talent to, Get Fucked found him studio sparring with Nils Hess around the turn of the millennium on labels like Eukahouse. Now leading tech house reissue label Repeat have gathered together the best of the singles, and as you might well expect it's heavyweight, rolling gear for the late night marathon crew, crafted masterfully with grit and groove in equal measure.

Timeless
Review: A captivating fusion of house and deep house that transports listeners to a realm of unparalleled sonic bliss. Drawing inspiration from the golden era of 90s house music, Scarano weaves together enchanting piano hooks and infectious melodies that evoke a sense of nostalgia and pure dance-floor ecstasy. The EP's title track shimmers with a filtered ethereal quality, reminiscent of Ian Pooley's seminal works, its catchy rhythm inviting listeners to surrender to the moment and immerse themselves in the music's intoxicating embrace. On the B-side, 'Walking On Music' pulsates with a powerful house groove, infused with disco elements that ignite the dance floor. In contrast, 'Timeless' takes a deeper turn, showcasing Scarano's mastery of looped-based house with its intricate chords and mesmerizing basslines. With its infectious beats and nostalgic grooves, Pleasure Dreams showcases Giuseppe Scarano's exceptional talent as a producer. This EP is a must-listen for lovers of house and deep house music, offering a sonic escape and an unforgettable dancefloor experience.

Electro House
Review: The fifth edition of Depeche Mode's Memento Mori white label remixes series hears four new remixes added to the post-hoc vinyl selection, offered to the world after the release of the synthpop pioneers' most recent eponymous album. Beginning with the demure atmospherics of Chris Avantgarde's 'Before We Drown', then into two propulsive, audio-brut experimental downtempo versions by AC, but not before a brilliant pystrance B1 by Indira Paganotto, which makes for a squarely sagacious sendoff.

Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

Review: NT is Nail aka Neil Holliday, one half of Bent and a master of UK tech house. But here he shows a different side across six majestically Balearic groovers. That draw on everything he has done before to send you out to sea on gentle waves of shining synth goodness, downtempo bliss and dreamy, chubby, soft focus drums. 'Beside Boa Linn' is a soothing summer sound to kick off then 'Going Out To Feel It' is a spiritual house cut for sundown, and 'Don't Hide Away' is slow motion disco brilliance. The trip continues with the star-gazing 'Evening Fixture', Eddie C style guitar licks of 'Walk In Romance' and romantic lullaby 'Dreams On Hold.'

Review: Offering five tracks of captivating Italian techno and trance, JP Energy's Strano EP, resurfaces with a timeless allure, Originating from 1993 Italy, Side-1 opens with 'Down To The Moon,' exuding early 90s trance and techno vibes, hinting at the emergence of intelligent techno that later evolved into IDM. Flipping to Side 2, 'Alvorada' unfolds as a smooth, ambient techno gem, showcasing melodic intricacies that enchant the listener. Review: The blistering, one-of-a-kind West Coast disco-funk record 'U Need Me' by LA Propinquity surfaces as part of a new body of historic productions initially intended for compilation on a full-length LP. For reasons undisclosed, this never happened; instead, Italian sonic exhumers Cannonball Records have been afforded the privilege of reissuing these tracks across a series of 7"s themselves. Hardly and criminially under-recognised in their day, the L.A. Propinquity were nonetheless composed of the angelic city's finest, with drummer James Gadson forming a prominent part. A blast from the 1970s, 'U Need Me' is a beaming slice of unrequited longing, set to delicious funk tones that are as maximized as they are unstrained.

Review: Vintage Pleasure Boutique is an excellently named label out of Poland that is fast approaching its 20th releases. This latest 12" is another dazzling Italo disco gem that arrives on translucent yellow vinyl. Claudia T.'s 'Fatal Destination' arrived originally back in 1989 at the height of the genre's popularity and very much takes you back there with its cold but compelling synth sounds and crashing drums, all very reminiscent of the era. The soaring vocals brings the glorious hook next to zippy lead synths. This was a bit hit back in the day and is sure to win over just as many global dancers second time around.

Review: Roberto Zanetti was also known as Savage and was a producer who was beloved among Italo disco enthusiasts. His work in the 80s helped to define the genre and this is one of the tracks he turned out that had a particular resonance. The outstanding production from 1987 is as likely to captivate dancefloors across Europe now as it was back then. It became a secret weapon for many DJs the first time around and here makes a special return with a reissue that features a bonus remix by Alex "A" and Patrick Delay, which was originally released in 1988 in Hong Kong.

Review: Jinje is a solo project from Lee Malcolm, a founding member of the Leeds-based experimental band Vessels. His music in solo mode is just as singer and hard to categorise as with his band and here on Mesh he veers between electronic, synthetic and organic sound worlds with driving breakbeats topped with gorgeous string sounds, hype-real synths and a shimmering sense of sonic futurism that is awash with melody. These are hugely detailed tracks but the overall picture is never confused as his arrangements ebb and flow with great clarity and make both a physical and emotional impact.
