Review: For some reason, the world's foremost ambient explorers have always been prolific. Take the sadly departed Pete Namlook, who released 10 albums in 1994 alone. Brock Van Wey is cut from similar cloth. It was only last week that he delivered an album under his BVDub pseudonym; here, he returns to his given name for a similarly tactile, two-CD voyage into the world of beatless dreamscapes. The Namlook comparisons are understandable; like the once mighty German, Van Wey specializes in creating sprawling pieces based around gradual shifts in long, drawn out chords, slowly shifting melodies (check the Satie-inspired "Can't Go Home Without You"), delay-laden instruments and epic atmospherics. When he gets it right - as he does on Home - there are few greater exponents of the art of ambient.

Review: Runaway funksters Rudimental furnish the fans with their highly anticipated album. And having smashed number one with two of their only four singles, there's A LOT of anticipation. We're happy to announce they've stepped up to every lofty expectation... and then somr. It's evident from the off; the dusty Daptone soul of the opening track sets the tone perfectly. Further on we find them developing their live technique on the guitar twanging "Right Here" and getting their street sleaze on via "Hell Could Freeze." Other exciting developments include the Amp Fiddler/Erykah Badu nodding "Hide" and the Balearic bliss of "Alien Bashment". Runaway, yes. But definitely here to stay. "Home" is where the heart is...

Review: Romania's Mihai Popoviciu is back with his first release for 2016 and his first full length album since 2011's The Unexpected Truth on Highgrade. The Home LP comes out on Leipzig's Bondage Music and features eight exercises in sleek tech house attitude across two discs. Highlights not limited to the smooth rolling opener "Focus", the sleek and slinky progressive house vibe of "Music 999" and the bumping minimal groove of "Hypnosia" which will be a real hit during the morning closing set. Things do get a bit fiercer towards the end though; for a bit more variety he throws down the tough and functional techno of "Havana" displaying his varying degrees of talent in the studio.

Review: Honolulu-based record Aloha Got Soul has made itself one of those labels you always check no matter whether you know the name of the artists involved or not. O'ahu-born Nick Kurosawa is one such case and his Home album is crucial - a mix of his own superb originals as well as influential classics by Bobby Caldwell, Sam Cooke, and Kalapana. The album first arrived in 2018 and showcased his vocal skills as well as offering a window into the wide musical world of the island of Hawaii. Kit Ebersbach engineered the recording and mixdowns to make this reissue all the more essential.

Review: Hania Rani's sophomore album, hybrid neo-classical/ambient work "Esja", was arguably one of the most criminally overlooked sets of 2019. We hope that the same fate does not befall this equally as impressive follow-up, which sees the Polish pianist and composer offer up a suite of ear-pleasing tracks built around cyclical piano movements, crackly field recordings, layered vocalisations, heaps of special effects and just the right amount of ambient textures. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including stunning opener "Leaving", drowsy ambient-jazz masterpiece "Zero Hour", surprisingly upbeat electronica song "Home" and the creeping sadness and late-night paranoia of closing cut "Come Back Home".

Review: As well as rolling out a reliably high-quality strain of Rominimal since 2005, Mihai Popoviciu has taken pride in demonstrating his broader musical outlook via albums for Highgrade, Poker Flat and Bondage Music. It's the latter Berlin-based label he committed Home to in 2016, and now it's getting a well-deserved repress on tasty coloured wax. The album title hints at the vibe inside there's a noticeable embrace of poppy warmth on tracks like 'Focus' and 'Music 999', throwing Popoviciu's established line in slender club tracks into a different emotional head space which sounds as fresh now as it did six years ago.

Review: Romare's third album is another exercise in finding the exact sweet spot where happy and sad collide. By now he is something or a master at it and here laces those sorts of sounds with a sense of spirituality, hints of disco, touches of identity and plenty of funk. These more serious influences come as a result of the artist becoming a father, but the album never grows too sentimental (though "Deliverance" sure is a nice adult lullaby.) Elsewhere there is slow acid on "High" and joyous, heartfelt melodic house on "Dreams." Versatile, emotional, dancey - what more could you want?
