Review: Not to be confused with the Finnish metal legends of the same name, Aussie psych-rock revivalists Tarot return almost a full decade on from their retro-fitted debut full-length Reflections with the mercurial sophomore effort Glimpse Of The Dawn. Steeped in 70s, fuzzed out psychedelia, the band utilise the Hammond B3 organ to its full effect along with a myriad of analog synths and use of mellotron; crafting hazy, lysergic rhythms that groove with authenticated bombast, while channelling influences from iconic pioneers such as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Rainbow.

Review: Following on from last year's critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, Los Angeles-based self-described "ecstatic black metal" outfit Agriculture return with a new EP titled Living Is Easy. Expanding their wall-of-sound sonics even further to conjure a form of saccharine abrasion with barrages of tremolo guitar-picking, blast-beating triumphant fury that echoes the likes of Deafheaven or Liturgy in their most epic moments, this is a form of metallic extremity crafted to help espouse negativity, not through negative sonics but by re-channelling said sonics through dexterous and uplifting cataclysms of audible euphoria. This 12" pressing is also coupled with the band's 2022 debut EP The Circle Chant, which has never been available on vinyl before now.

Review: Phoenix, Arizona based modern death metal brutalists Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated third full-length Dark Superstition. The first album from the band since 2019's Deserted showcases an embracing of both the hyper-violent grindcore-indebted cuts from their 2021 mini-LP/EP An Unexpected Reality, as well as the brooding doom-metal opus 'Emptiness' that bookended the project. Recorded at God City Studios with Converge guitarist and iconic producer Kurt Ballou, while citing influences from melodic death and gothic metal acts such as In Flames, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, the long gestation period has resulted in the band's most sonically sprawling work to date. Newly signed to Nuclear Blast, the decrepit stage appears to be set for Gatecreeper to finally seize all of their bubbling potential by the horns and throat. Mark our words when we say Dark Superstition will be one of the definitive extreme metal contributions of 2024.

Review:
Early Moods' second album, A Sinner’s Past" is a potent blend of early 70s proto-metal, 90s grunge riffs, and timeless songwriting, fueled by youthful energy. The Los Angeles quartet emerged with a distinct sound, merging underground Street Doom with Heavy Metal melodies on their debut. Their skilled musicianship and aesthetic taste have earned them popularity. A Sinner’s Past elevates their sound, drawing inspiration from Soundgarden's depth, Sabotage's fuzz tones, and 70s Scorpions' melodies. Guitarist Eddie Andrade expresses pride in the album's diverse experimentation and growth. Recorded in Pico Rivera, CA, the album reflects their journey and refined sound, guided by Allen Falcon of Birdcage Studios. Established in 2015, Early Moods evolved from thrash to doom, finding their niche and lineup, and building a local fanbase.

Following on from 1980's debut LP Demolition, their frenetic concoction of punk-tinged metallic mayhem would ultimately be perfected on this preceding effort, forever cementing the group as one of the pioneering acts of the NWBHM movement, while the album also served as the highest charting release of their four-decade spanning career, reaching number five in the UK Albums Chart.

Review: Denver based monolithic death-doom hybridizers Spectral Voice make their decrepit return on the long awaited follow up to 2017's fierce debut LP Eroded Corridors Of Unbeing. Alluding to the Dionysian rite of being torn limb from limb, Sparagmos offers a further abyssal wade into waters of morbid, atmospheric funereality. Combining elements of the ugliest caverns of the metallic spectrum, from black to death to doom to dungeon synth ambience, this sophomore effort offers a simultaneously enlightening yet utterly fearful descent into the "profound exploration of life, death, and the untamed essence within"; analysing our purpose through arcane ruminations of sonic anguish.

Marking their sixth overall LP with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo handling vocal duties (who has been with the group since their third reunion in 2009), the material here espouses genuine concerns over the increase of AI in modern technology and its careless displacement of artists from varying fields. Emboldened by frenetic, anthemic riffage and soaring melodious hooks, Accept are back to remind all of their vital influence and put every band who've come since back in their quiet little place atop the band's giant shoulders.

Review: Following on from Slayer's 2019 farewell tour, (which has now been made semi-redundant by their recently announced comeback festival run), scalp-tatted axeman Kerry King made it clear that he would need to be dragged kicking and screaming from the metal realm, regardless of the activity of his primary project. Hence, we arrive at the endearing curmudgeon of thrash metal greatness on his debut solo affair From Hell I Rise. Not on his lonesome, however, as King has tapped a one of a kind supergroup line-up to enlist him in his continual 40 year effort to melt faces. Accompanied by former Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph, ex-Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel, Kyle Sanders of HELLYEAH on bass and Death Angel's Mark Osegueda handling vocal duties, expect breakneck paced mayhem, frenetic riffage and masturbatory shredfests as far as the ear canals can capture.

Review: Originally released in 2009, and serving as the ninth overall full-length from controversial extreme metal legends Behemoth, the title of Evangelion comes from the Greek word meaning 'Spreading the word of God' or 'Spreading the Good News', while in typical Nergal fashion, the concept is twisted and inverted beyond recognition with a redefinition of The Great Harlot or Great Whore of Babylon adorning the artwork as an ultimate symbol of rebellion and resistance against God. Critically acclaimed upon release for its virtuosic and oppressive blend of blackened death metal with more occult ambience, while the drum production work of Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames, Dark Funeral) provided the type of dynamic range the band had only previously dipped their frosted toes into, this gorgeous translucent red repress restores all of the project's cavernous greatness to monumentally monolithic heights.

Review: The duo of Jim Kotsis and Kate Soulthorn, better known as Saturday Night Satan, live up to their 70s style moniker with a retro-fitted occult-influenced collection of fuzzed out proto-doom death rock. Led by Soulthorn's Wiccan cadence and gothic lyricism, whilst emboldened by the insidiously catchy riffs of Kotsis that squelch with authentic psych bombast, All Things Black offers up a hypnotic dirge of sultry Satan worship that's simply too groovy and and enticing to ignore; like the music we imagine was played at the Manson Ranch.

Review: Easily, the most controversial album in the Metallica back catalogue (with the exception of their Lou Reed collab LP Lulu), St. Anger was originally released in 2003, and marked yet another stylistic shift from the thrash metal titans. Following on from the hard rock-oriented sister albums Load and Re:Load in the mid-nineties, and their Garage Inc. covers collection, the band's eighth full-length would eschew virtuosic guitar solos (once a core staple of their sonic makeup) and their galloping style of frenetic riffage; replacing them with a more jagged style of composition and performance, leading to a unique sound falling somewhere between groove and alt-metal, yet much rawer than either of the two. Maligned by many, yet defended by a vocal section of the fanbase, there's something remarkably ballsy about the sheer abandon of their former selves on this record, while cuts such as the pummelling title-track, the southern-tinged bedlam of 'Frantic', and the chunky heft of 'My World', are all criminally slept on latter day contributions, forgotten to time for being the musical blacksheep of the Metallica discography. Also, if you ever deeply desired to hear drummer Lars Ulrich's utterly bizarre snare sound with pure audio fidelity, this lush orange vinyl 2xLP reissue has you covered.

Review: It isn't much of an understatement to say that thrash metal giants Metallica got off on the wrong creative foot entering into the 21st century, with 2003's controversial St. Anger still causing ample debate amongst the fanbase to this day. A five-year respite would see a re-channelling of their ethos and approach, resulting in 2008's exceptional return to form Death Magnetic, which finally saw the band crack the code of how to modernise their signature formula without losing sight of why it resonated with so many headbangers in the first place. Following another near-decade long gap, 2016 saw the arrival of Hardwired...To Self-Destruct; a project that furthered their sonic realignment with a near 80-minute opus of lengthy compositions, galloping riffage and anthemic hooks; harking authentically back to the progressive, controlled meanderings of their late 80s peek. If its predecessor was the re-charting of course, Hardwired can easily be accepted as the arrival at the shore of placated fan acceptance and fluid artistic rediscovery.

Spleen and Goad comes with a suitably dark cover on aqua blue vinyl and features some of the group's most gritty work in their 25 year career, which means they will retain their titles as kings of the "doom sludge vanguard." All of the nice cuts are powerhouses with mad heavy riffs on the opener 'Concrete Shock' signalling what to come and there is no let up from there with fuzzed out guitars, pounding drums and gutters snarls and vocal barks.

This forced upon lengthy gestation period culminated in a more tempered and analytical compositional approach entering into Mind Burns Alive; a work the members are confident will truly surprise listeners, remarking that while its predecessor offered a noxious potion of almost every sonic guise the band have adorned until now, from hefty sludge to saccharine post-doom, their upcoming fifth full-length promises to challenge both themselves and avid fans in equal measure.

Review: Arriving in 2008, a half-decade on from their controversial eighth full-length St. Anger, thrash metal heavyweights Metallica would dig deep on LP number nine to produce what many avid fans consider to be one of the band's best post-1980's records (with the obvious exception of 1991's The Black Album). Restoring the face-melting shredfests completely absent from their preceding effort, while looking inward to gauge how much of the Metallica formula should be modernised without losing sight of why they originally resonated with so many a headbanger in the first place, Death Magnetic struck the ideal balance between the epic thrash spectacle of old, with cuts like 'Cyanide' harking back to the anthemic theatrics of 'Creeping Death', while 'The Day That Never Comes' offers up a slow burning metallic ballad that would've fit right in during their 80s/90s transitional period, yet embellished by frontman James Hetfield's more seasoned bravado and demeanour. Switching out producer Bob Rock (who many had felt was well beyond outstaying his welcome) for bearded guru Rick Rubin, the results speak for themselves as Death Magnetic can likely be attributed to Metallica's continuing reign as the ultimate thrash giants, while each subsequent project since has followed the album's retro-revitalised blueprint.

Review: Following on from their critically acclaimed 1988 sophomore effort From Enslavement To Obliteration, which marked their final full-length with original vocalist Lee Dorrian and guitarist Bill Steer, Birmingham grindcore legends Napalm Death would redefine and re-establish themselves on 1990's Harmony Corruption. With the addition of current frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway, the group would trek to the iconic Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida (studio home to many a classic death metal record from the likes of Cannibal Corpse and Death), to craft a work far more sonically inspired by their outlying peers within the genre. Working from their refined grindcore blueprint, yet imbuing the trudging chaos with especially heavy riffage and even low guttural growls, this newly tempered form of deathgrind would not only re-chart the band's course for the ensuing decades, but cause a connective riff between the two subcultures of metallic extremity still felt to this day. Vocalists from the two legendary Floridian death metal acts Deicide (Glen Benton) and Obituary (John Tardy) also both make appearances on the vile 'Unfit Earth', making for one of the only posse-like grindcore cuts you're likely to ever have invade your ear canals.

Review: When industrial drone-doom sonic mutilators Khanate announced their return with last year's dense and oppressive comeback record To Be Cruel, a guarantee was made to over-hyped fans that their back catalogue would be repressed and readily available in the near future. Making good on that promise, 2009's Clean Hands Go Foul (which initially served as the perceived swansong from the supergroup before retroactively becoming a predecessor to last year's beastly return to form) arrives back on wax to provide fans of the most depraved and vile aural punishment the chance to be tortured with the highest fidelity possible. Comprised of seasoned scene veterans James Plotkin and Alan Dubin of OLD, Tim Wyskida of Blind Idiot God and Stephen O'Malley of drone legends Sunn O))), their collective prowess conjures a form of sonic malevolence almost too unpleasant to simply be categorised by metal or industrial or experimentalism; it's just Khanate, which should nearly be its own isolated genre at this point. Finally, when sequencing this record and its 14-year gestating follow up back to back, not a single ounce of malodorours intent has been diluted by time.

Review: The first official album released through Ipecac Records; the label of absurdist vocalist extraordinaire Mike Patton (Faith No More, a million other projects), was this self-titled debut from Fantomas, originally unveiled in 1999. A supergroup with no absolutely zero desire to make it easy on listeners, this culmination of Melvins mastermind Buzz Osborne on guitar, Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk/regular Patton cohort Trevor Dunn on bass, and Slayer's Dame Lombardo behind the kit, would coalesce all of their most extreme creative proclivities into one bizarre maelstrom of avant-garde cacophony that can barely be fit into the metal genre. Intended as the musical accompaniment to a fictitious comic book, with all track titles even listed as chapter/page numbers (a unique theme that would follow into all subsequent albums), the work has since been praised for its sonic abandon and artistic fearlessness, with one critic once referring to their avant-garde jazzy grindcore as "dada-metal". The project would also finally offer Patton the opportunity to prioritise his experimental forms of voice music and scat singing over traditional vocal cadence or standard lyricism.

Review: Originally released in 2001, The Director's Cut would serve as the sophomore full-length from avante-garde metal supergroup Fantomas, and is still considered, by many, to be the outfit's definitive statement of absurdity. Comprised of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Dead Cross), Buzz Osborne (Melvins), Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and Patton's trusted bass advisory Trevor Dunn (Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle), the four-piece would follow up 1999's self-titled debut with an utterly unhinged collection of cover versions of themes from horror films and television series, but often reliably twisted beyond the realms of instant recognition. For every faithful rendition such as the eerie reimagining of Krzysztof Komeda's lullaby theme from Rosemary's Baby, there's the utter bastardisation of Nino Rota's iconic theme from The Godfather, which travels within a three-minute spectrum from loyal recreation to jazzed up grindcore complete with scat-screaming and overwhelming displays of discordant, cascading noise-punk. Detailed, frenetic, bizarre and astute, this is a work designed to leave you dizzy, shook and with a hefty batch of classic cinematic recommendations.

Review: On December 30th and 31st 1978, early demo versions were laid down in Spaceward Studios of what would eventually become the debut EP from future British metal giants Iron Maiden. The three tracks in question ('Iron Maiden', 'Invasion', 'Prowler') were all recorded within the same session, making for a far more primitive and raw offering than the finalised studio versions that would ultimately find their home on the band's self-titled 1980 debut LP. This compilation restores the original three-track The Soundhouse Tapes EP, while including a bevvy of additional demos, alternative takes and live cuts from the formative, (pre-Bruce Dickinson) Paul Di'Anno era.

Review: The Melvins, known for their unapologetically experimental and abrasive sound, continue their legacy of sonic exploration with Tarantula Heart, set for release via Ipecac Recordings. The album, featuring a five-track lineup, including the sprawling 19-minute opener 'Pain Equals Funny, which displays the band's penchant for pushing the boundaries of conventional music. One of the album's defining features is the incorporation of dual drum parts, with longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover teaming up with Roy for an impressive display of rhythmic complexity. This collaboration adds a new dimension to the Melvins' sound, further solidifying their reputation as pioneers of unconventional music. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Toshi Kasai, a longtime collaborator of the band, Tarantula Heart adds to the album's eclectic sonic palette. While The Melvins may never achieve mainstream success due to their avant-garde approach, this album stands by their unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and innovation, making it a must-listen for fans of boundary-pushing music everywhere.

Review: BIG BRAVE's music epitomises what has been called 'massive minimalism,' with layers of textural distortion and feedback accentuating its weight and frayed edges. Their artistry blends traditional folk techniques with a modern deconstruction of guitar music, all of which is evident in the new album A Chaos Of Flowers, which is a follow-up to their fierce 2023 album Nature Morte. Lyrically, the songs delve into vulnerability, isolation, and co-existence in nature and guitarist and vocalist Robin Wattie drew inspiration from poetry by female-presenting artists, exploring alienation's impact on the psyche. This record is a testament to the band's ability to evoke intense emotions through minimalist yet powerful arrangements.

Throughout the album, listeners are treated to mesmerizing organ leads that add an ethereal dimension to the music, while abrasive and rash guitar work injects a raw energy into the sound. Review: Originally released at the turn of the new millennium, America's Volume Dealer marked the sixth full-length from North Carolina sludging southern metal legends Corrosion Of Conformity, and would be the last to feature longtime drummer Reed Mullin before his return a decade later in 2010. Noted for being the band's most accessible or "radio-friendly" project due to the more polished production and increased reliance on melody, there's no denying that while the dank stoner-heft grooves of old are largely absent, the more alternative rock-leaning approach to their signature brand of metallic, southern blues, in hindsight, was a remarkable breath of fresh air within their back catalogue.

Review: Self-described "putrid, drug-fueled gutter rock from the filthy streets of NYC", Couch Slut deal in ugliness, and boy is business a-boomin'! Meshing the most challenging facets of grindcore, hardcore punk, noise rock and black metal, the resulting cacophony is as unpleasant as it is impenetrable, yet the commanding presence of vocalist and primary songwriter Megan Osztrosits demands you suffer the audible torment while she details harrowing depictions of sexual violence, drug abuse and more singular inner-city horrors through subversive, vitriolic and grimly humoured phrases. Working with industrial hardcore manglers Uniform's Ben Greenberg (with previous production credits for Drab Majesty, Portrayal of Guilt, Metz), You Could Do It Tonight marks the fourth overall full-length from the group, and utterly refuses to dilute or smoothen their ethos of audibly healing through pain, or just pain for the fuck of it.

Review: 'Unfurling' their 15th album - a stonking discographic achievement - My Dying Bride's A Mortal Binding is brought to our attention. The Yorkshire-based quintet deliver this incendiary sonic meditation on loss, distress, and abyssal horror with glee, eliding gothic and apocalyptic themes while playing on bleak aspects of the band members' personal lives, sublimated through wicked doom metal. 'Thornwyck Hymn', 'Her Dominion' and 'The Apocalyptist' betray a belief that one can master the end of times - whatever form they may take - and use them to one's own advantage: such is the implied message.

Review: You mightn't initially peg the Sunderland area of Northern England for being a hotbed of brutal, violent deathcore, but that's precisely what Osiah offer, with their own mission statement even declaring them to be the "UK's heaviest Northern offering". Following on from 2021's malevolent Loss, the band have somehow managed to drag their psychotic blend of frenetic riffage, octopus-like blast beat drumming, heaving hardcore breakdowns and despicable guttural vocals further down into chasms of otherworldly abyssal dread. Hideous, highly technical, and arriving courtesy of definitive deathcore label Unique Leader, although it arrived in December of 2023, many have slowly begun to retrospectively regard Kairos as the most intense, dynamic and powerful offering to the genre of last year.

Review: Originally released in 1998, The Sound of Perseverance would serve as the seventh and subsequently final full-length from death metal pioneers Death, before mastermind Chuck Schuldiner's untimely loss due to brain cancer-related complications in 2001. Noted for being the only work with this specific line-up, featuring guitarist Shannon Hamm, drummer Richard Christy, and bassist Scott Clendenin (all members of Schuldiner's equally brilliant but often overlooked side-project Control Denied), this final death breath of fluid progressive tech-death greatness can sometimes fall through the cracks of the band's impeccable discography, and be fobbed off as a latter day addition sans the original core members, but mark our words, even the last Death album puts most modern death metal attempts to utter shame.

Review: The mid-90s were a time of immense change for the death metal scene, strongly linked to the endless progression of the genre's most vital pioneers Death, who in retrospect, appeared to be reshaping, retooling and expanding the genre for their current and future peers in real time. Having already switched out the lyrical gore obsessions of their early material for the socio-political ponderings of 1990's Spiritual Healing, before turning to more opaque, introspective ruminations on their superbly technical, progressive death metal opus Human in 1991, a two-year gap would occur (a lengthy creative respite in terms of their prolificacy) before the arrival of 1993's Individual Thought Patterns. During this time, metal drumming legend Gene Hoglan (Testament, Fear Factory) would enter the mix along with King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque, and this newly refurbished line up would continue to build upon the virtuosic hyper-technical prog-death blueprint of Human, but with a major increase of oppressive, metallic menace, leading many to consider the work to be Death's most mercurial balance of artistic complexity and vicious heaviness.

Review: Arriving just a year after their seminal 1987 genre-defining debut LP Scream Bloody Gore, Floridian death metal pioneers Death and their creative mastermind Chuck Schuldiner would perfect, not only their own sound, but the blueprint for an entire movement with 1988's sophomore effort Leprosy. The first of their projects to be recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, highly regarded today as the definitive studio home of the death metal genre thanks to the work of legendary producer and engineer Scott Burns (who would go on to cut records at the same space for Sepultura, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse), the material marked the first stylistic and tonal shift towards the far more macabre, gory, compositionally and lyrically depraved bedlam that the genre would fully morph into throughout the next decade. In short, this is a death metal classic that requires little to no introduction, complete with virtuosic guitar leads, Morse-code blast beats and inhuman guttural bellows. The initiated should hang their heads in shame if unfamiliar, while those who've never gone looking into the deep abyss of Death, might be better off continuing to live in peaceful tranquillity.

Review: Following on from 1988's seminal sophomore triumph Leprosy, pioneering death metal forefathers Death entered into the 90s with a work that would shift perception on, not only their own project, but the entire genre as an entity. Released in 1990, Spiritual Healing marked a notable embracing of more melodious compositions, largely due to the presence of lead guitarist James Murphy, with this LP being his only contribution to the band's discography, along with bassist Terry Butler. Coinciding with the simultaneous maximisation of technicality and melody, the album would also shift the lyrical approach of primary songwriter Chuck Schuldiner, who began moving away from gore and viscera-soaked tales and focusing more on the real-world horrors of drug addiction, poverty, serial killers, organised religion and corrupt faith healers, just like the one that adorns the iconic artwork.

Three decades later their seminal sophomore effort, Dirt sounds as good as it ever did and gets an anniversary reissue to mark the occasion. From their turntable spinning, frenetic rap-metal beginnings on 2000's global breakout Hybrid Theory, to the refined maturation of their formula on 2003's career-height Meteora, to their Jay-Z collaborative album Collision Course to the shedding of skin and rebranding as a genre-less alternative rock entity on 2007's Minutes To Midnight; as popular and accessible as they were, the band clearly constantly strived for sonic progression. Papercuts collects the highest charting singles from the group over two decades, with the most recent contribution being the previously unreleased 'Friendly Fire' recorded during the sessions for 2017's One More Light, which ultimately serves as the final new piece of recording from the band and vocalist Chester Bennington who would tragically take his own life later that same year. Ignoring the standard sequencing of a greatest hits which often lists the tracks in chronologically released order, here the cuts are compiled to sonically complement each other and reflect the band's ethos rather than a single line commercial pattern. Here is why the anthemic double platinum 'In The End' is juxtaposed with the minimalist rap-rock of MTM banger 'Bleed It Out', or why the previously unreleased fan favourite demo 'QWERTY' lands right between the U2 indebted 'What I've Done' and the original breakout single that started it all 'One Step Closer'.

Review: Tarja's What Lies Beneath, originally released in 2010 showcases her versatility as an artist. The album seamlessly blends genres, from symphonic rock to Europop, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience. Tarja's powerful vocals take center stage, soaring effortlessly over the dramatic orchestration and infectious beats. The lyrics delve into themes of love, loss, and personal growth, resonating with listeners on an emotional level. Standout tracks include the anthemic 'Until My Last Breath' and the haunting 'Falling Awake.' The album's reissue in 2024 is a testament to Tarja's artistry and her ability to connect with audiences through her music.

Review: Arriving almost six years on from their Grammy Award-winning eighth full-length Electric Messiah, Oakland, California stoner-sludge behemoths High On Fire return with the highly anticipated Cometh The Storm. Plumbing the depths of post-COVID woes, the increasing proverbial fire of the world at large, and our brittle purpose within the cosmos, these long-gestating beastly cuts offer up some of the most heaving tonal bedlam the trio have delivered in well over a decade, whilst simultaneously operating as their most sonically daring and expansive chapter yet by tapping into middle-Eastern influences and utilising Turkish instruments to craft a worldly, encompassing sense of global dread. When you absolutely, positively, require some of the most grooving, hefty, nihilistic sludge/stoner/doom available, you're always in luck when High On Fire rear their Cerberus heads.

Review: Gothic songstress Chelsea Wolfe makes her illustrious return on the much anticipated seventh full-length She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She. Following on from 2021's immense collaborative project with artcore auteurs Converge, the album shall serve as Wolfe's first solo endeavour since the minimal, folk-centric Birth Of Violence released in 2019, while serving as her first output since departing long-time label-home Sargent House (following a diatribe of controversies best saved for another time) in favour of Loma Vista; home to outsider artists of numerous sonic shapes. As this new chapter appears to be marrying elements of industrial fury with complex trip-hop motifs akin to Merzbow producing for Portishead, all the while maintaining her sultry, Wiccan hypnotism; 2024 looks set to be the year of the Wolfe.

Review: A mere 19 albums, not out. It's almost unfathomable how long Judas Priest have been making noise, with their first steps into heavy metal megastardom taken in the late-1960s, a time when the genre was really just a glint in the eye of hopeful upstarts, including this troupe. More than 50million LP unit sales later, and it's safe to say their legacy is more than written, yet the most defining aspect of their tenure - unstoppable, unflappable - is only really apparent in their continued output. Well, OK, this is the first we've heard from them since 2018's Firepower, but nevertheless, across five decades they've barely taken more than four years off before coming back with new material. In this case it's been six, but there was a 24 month pandemic in and among, meaning you can let them off. So, what does it sound like, this long-awaited 19th long form from the deities of power riffs and juggernaut rhythms? Well, Judas Priest, of course - as if there was ever going to be another answer.

Review: Japanese fuzzed out psych-tinged post-rock monoliths Boris never seem to rest on their laurels for long. Just last year, they repressed the first instalment of their three Heavy Rocks albums (originally released in 2002), and unveiled the grinding Bright New Disease collab LP with industrial hardcore outfit Uniform. That's before even mentioning the surprise Fade LP that landed at the tail end of 2022. Starting 2024 as they mean to go on, their latest endeavour is a years-in-the-making split album with Tokyo alternative space-rockers Coaltar Of The Deepers, featuring both re-recorded versions of older cuts as well as both acts covering one another's material. Boris member Takeshi has often cited COTD as a major influence, with the band even covering 'To The Beach' in 2019, which was, in turn, produced by COTD leader Narasaki. Now, finally arriving at Hello There, we have Boris providing an oppressive rendition of COTD's 2007 track 'Serial Tear', while the band return the favour with a more ethereal, aquatic re-imagining of Boris' 2014 single 'Melody'. That's before even touching COTD's cover of The Cure's 'Killing Another', which needs to be absorbed with as little outsider input as possible, so we'll shhh now and leave this long-gestating gem in your very capable hands and ears.

Review: Born To Expire is the debut album by New York City band Leeway. Renowned as leaders of the crossover thrash charge in the mid 1980s, the local fountainhead, their early-days genius, was none other than that exalted club of legend, CBGB. Though the bands they ran with saw them as odd ones out for their originality - it was indeed their sweats that led to the coinage 'crossover thrash' at all - it was this very incongruence that saw to their popularity. In hindsight, lead guitarist and songwriter A.J. Novello described his delight at the album's success, boastful of its totally metallic sound and the one that "rewrote the book on New York hardcore".

The record spawned a further run of big singles such as 'Breaking the Habit,' 'Somewhere I Belong', 'Faint' and 'Numb. It has been certified multi-platinum, platinum, or gold in 15 countries and to mark the occasion it gets a special 20th anniversary reissue here having sold well over 16 million copies around the world. This vinyl version comes with an insert as well as all the original hard-hitting guitars, drums and visceral Chester Bennington vocals that the band is so well known and loved for.

Review: Following on from 2019's muted, folk-leaning Birth Of Violence, as well as the weighty Bloodmoon: I collaborative LP with experimental hardcore heroes Converge, which arrived in 2021; the Wiccan mystic that is Chelsea Wolfe returns with her highly anticipated seventh full-length She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She. Shying away from the acoustic or metallic sonics of prior projects in order to embrace a blistering new era of frosted trip-hop, chopped and screwed with industrial tinges, echoing a more ugly, gothic interpretation of Portishead at their most macabre, the endeavour also marks her first since departing long-time label-home Sargent House following a litany of controversies, in favour of the ever-expanding dynamic roster of Loma Vista (HEALTH, Militarie Gun, Soccer Mommy).

Review: Following on from their iconic 1982 debut full-length Kill 'Em All, the sophomore effort from thrash metal titans Metallica would mark their turn towards not just darker but more introspective and dynamic songwriting. While jolting blasts of frenetic riffage and virtuosic solos still abound in cuts such as 'Fight Fire With Fire' and 'Trapped Under Ice', moments like the acoustic driven, melancholic 'Fade To Black' or the menacing instrumental closer 'The Call Of Ktulu' were indicative of the visionary prowess the still relatively young band would go on to explore and expand greatly upon with subsequent releases. It must also be noted that Ride The Lightning birthed two of the most essential cuts from the Metallica back catalogue with the eerie war torn anthem 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' and the Egyptian history lesson turned thrash opus 'Creeping Death', which already cover the price of admission.

Review: LA based industrial trio HEALTH have had quite the curious trajectory from their confrontational noise-rock beginnings, to providing the acclaimed score to Max Payne 3, all the way to redefining themselves as a gritty, synth-metal behemoth on 2019's Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear. Following on from their lockdown-inspired two-part Disco 4 collaborative project which boasted cuts written in tandem with artists ranging from a multitude of differing sonic spheres, such as alternative hip-hop (JPEGMAFIA, Ghostemane) to hyperpop (100 Gecs) and even grindcore (Full Of Hell), their latest endeavour appears to be taking cues from both their more vicious experiments as well as their newfound collaborative ethos. With features from the likes of Godflesh and Willie Adler of Lamb Of God, whilst embracing both their metallic and techno-leaning indulgences simultaneously, Rat Wars promises to distil the myriad of components essential to the sonic makeup of HEALTH into one oppressive, melancholic, hellish, absorbing and vital collection.
