Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Review: A great choice of reissue by Kent Dance, Carolyn Crawford's 'Get Up And Move' is a fiery vocal soul highlight, and impassioned plea to the object of her affections to "get up and move", before he, she or they do something they "don't wanna do". It's a situation we can all relate to, but this recollection of Crawford's rendition of the scene lends the feeling an extra weight, igniting the inner carpe diem in all of us. From the unheard vaults of Mickey Stevenson's Mpingo label in the early 70s, it now comes double-billed with the Motownier 'Sugar Boy' on the flip, also hitherto unheard.

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

Review: Danish-German production duo Cool Million (Frank Ryle, Robert 'Rob' Hardt) are specialists in nu-disco and neo-boogie. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Review: Robert Chini (pronounced keeney), a native of Southern California, is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter who began his musical journey as a drummer at the age of five. With a star-studded career as a touring member of many a famous band including Peaches And Herb, Tower Of Power and Air Supply, Chini's efforts have still yet to falter or fly under the radar; quite to the contrary, he's still going strong, currently performing as both a solo artist and studio operator. 'Doin' It all For You' was written and recorded in 1979, while the B-sider here, 'Everlasting Love', was written and recorded three years earlier. Both songs hear Chini sing of commitment and dedication to love, narrating a journey from internal preoccupation with the self to finding a sense of eternity in devotion to another.

Review: Berkeley-born Cornell CC Carter returns with 'The Change,' which is the lead single from his upcoming album on Expansion. Initially making waves with his debut album Vindicated Soul in 2017, Carter has become a force in the UK soul scene with subsequent albums such as One Love, Absolutely, and Next Life. With a storied career that includes collaborations with The Isley Brothers and performances alongside James Brown, he has been a staple on Expansion's Soul Togetherness and Luxury Soul series, and graced the stage at the Luxury Soul Weekender in Blackpool. Review: Collins And Collins were originally at the Top Of The Stairs back in 1980 when this one first landed. It has since become a revered underground classic much loved on the modern soul circuit as a timeless gem. The song was first composed by Ashford & Simpson who recorded their own version but when playing live would switch to the Collins & Collins version. The tune first came on CD via Expansion back in 1993 and now gets a first official 7" version back with the exceptionally rare version of Gamble & Huff's 'You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good' which first was recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1975.

Review: Claude Cooper is a rather mysterious figure despite having got plenty of people talking in the last couple of years. He has picked up some high-profile radio play and after being unmasked recently is back with a gorgeous new funk single on the Friendly Recordings label. This hand-numbered pink vinyl 7" is limited to 300 copies and opens with the mad feel-good vibe of 'Stay A While' with its happy chords and dusty, driving drum funk. It's perfect for sunny days and lazy afternoons and 'Dance Tonight' is a bit more raw and 60s tinged for later in the party.

Review: Northern Soul heads rejoice - Cam Cameron's delightful 1968 gem 'They Say' is back on 45 rpm thanks to Soul Junction. Cameron is a Black American artist who has a stunning voice, as you can hear here, but is one of many such talents to apparently have only ever recorded one tune before disappearing never to be heard from again. More's the pity. His real name was Alvin Cameron and he wrote this one while the lush strings come from the late John Andrew Cameron, a hugely respected arranger, producer and songwriter who had a big impact in the soul scene in the 60s and 70s in Chicago.

Review: It's always a buzz to see a new Athens of the North 7" drop onto our shelves. This first drop of the year comes from label regulars Coast to Coast who had their unreleased and self-titled soul album reissued here back in October 2021. It is the opening track from that glorious record that gets its own pressing on 45 rpm here with an instrumental on the flip. The original from core members Mark Beiner and Ben Iverson, 'Love Is The Same' has glorious vocal falsettos and super sweet rhythms that bring feel-good vibes like no other.

Review: This 45rpm from Jr Thomas & Cutlass Cream will have your heart full and your mind dreaming. 'Reflections' is a first single from the pair that finds Thomas moving away from the more Jamaican influenced music he made with The Volcanos for labels Truth & Soul Records and Colemine Records and toward more vulnerable and honest song writing. It could be a reissue of a 60s classic but it isn't and is instead a fine collab with old friend Albert Perez Jr. from Minneapolis. The slow motion rhythms and twinkling melodies are perfect accompaniment for his smoky and downbeat vocals tones.

Review: Richard Caiton has many great soul treasures in his arsenal and several labels have gone digging for them over the years. After a great reissue of his 'Thank You' gem on Record Store Day last year, now Upright have dug out 'I Like To Get Near To You.' He originally recorded it for the label back in 1969 and it is one of the standouts in his discography all these years later. It is a super short but super sweet soulful gem with raw drums and horns leading the way next to life-affirming strings and a heart aching vocal.

Review: Los Angeles doo-wop and early rock n roll group The Coasters were fairly prolific in their heyday, making 13 albums from the 60s and throughout the 70s with an often rotting assembly of band members. 'Crazy Baby' is one of thirty that has endured over the years with its hard-hitting Northern Soul synth rhythms, vocals and keys. Now it gets reissued by the same original label that put it out back in 1965. An OG of this is hard to find and fairly expensive because of its cult status so do not sleep on this new reissue.

Review: Brit-funk group Cloud made a big impact back in the 80s. They were part of an exciting and emerging scene that fused funk, soul, jazz and more and their catalogue continues to get plenty of attention even now, decades on. Backatcha last served up their Visions EP back in February and now they look to their This Is Your Woman 12" which opens with the title track complete with its brilliant female vocals and low-key funky disco beats. There is also the high-speed and super cool grooves of 'I'll Never Give You Up' which fans of Freez will love, then a couple of dubs and instrumentals on the flip.

Review: Ron Henderson released only one album with his Choice of Colour band, and that was Soul Junction in 1976. The North Carolina-based singer-songwriter has become an object of cult admiration over the years which is what might explain how an original of that album can often go for upwards of $800 at auctions. The 2020 P-Vine reissue soon sold out and included an extra single from 1983, 'Gemini Lady.' It is that which now gets pressed up to its own 7". It comes with the same label design as the original with a special jacket to make it even more of a collector's item.

Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Here we get a couple of them with 'Dance Girl' - the last tune they released in 1974 before signing to Event/Spring. It was a real classic at block parties back in the day and on the flip is a tune that will cost you over L1000 if you can find an original, namely 'Keep On Brother Keep On' - the group's second single on Curtis BC Projects II label.

Review: Soul startlers Crystal Clear (not to be confused with the many house and drum & bass artists of the same name) laid down 'Stay With Me' in the mid-1970s. The song is a sweet and romantic, yet no less punchy, ditty, packed with contrasts between flitty, fay vocals (from an unknown singer no less) and a heavy-set drum recording to juxtapose. Now re-released via Soul Brother, we're reintroduced to the song in all its hip-swanging glory. Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

Review: First released in 1976 on Polydor, 'All Alone By The Telephone' is a lesser-sung sleeper hit by the Checkmates Ltd., but it hardly deserves this obscurity compared to their far more well-known hit 'Black Pearl', produced by Phil Spector. This one, to contrast, was produced by H.B.Barnum. It's a known go-to for DJs on the 2-step and modern soul scenes, but it's not the hype that counts; rather, the track's production is delectable, meting out near perfect harmony and balance to evoke the excruciating feeling of loneliness. 'Body Language', on the B, hears the band rested and recuperated from this isolated spell, and comes far funkier, more delightful.

Review: Favorite Recordings has previously championed revered and little-known Francophile disco and boogie gems, mostly on dedicated compilations curated by dusty-fingered digger Charles Maurice. This '45' marks the launch of a new series along similar lines, with each release boasting two hard-to-find tracks accompanied by their original cover art (one on the front, the other on the back). On side A you'll find 'Give It Up' by Belgian band Charms, a warming and loved-up chunk of boogie/mid-80s soul brilliance stacked with luscious synth sounds, rubbery bass guitar and eyes-closed male lead vocals. Over on the reverse is France-Lise's 'Pour-moi ca ma', a simply superb slab of French language disco blessed with a killer bassline, funky guitar licks and some suitably heady horns. Tres bon!

Review: GC Cameron was born and raised in McCall Creek, Mississippi, and by the age of 22 he was already famous having joined Motown Records. He was signed up as lead singer of the legendary group The Spinners and had several web recover tunes and a few hits such as 'It's A Shame,' which was co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder. After that, Cameron left the group and went solo and teamed up with Harvey Faqua, Greg Crockett and Elgie Stover to record his best-ever work, which now makes its way onto this fine four-track EP courtesy of Soundway.
