Review: This new 7" from Jimmy Mack is a delightful piece of sunny soul. The Wisconsin man's a€iPop Goes The Weasela€™ was originally released in 1983 and has become an incredibly hard to find tune, and expensive when you do. The original sets off on an airy groove, with gentle flute leads, trilling chords and the effortless vocal melting your heart. On the flip side is an edit from a friend of the label, Bristol's Admin, who is one of the hottest edit talents in the game right now. His version is cleaned up a little but is sympathetic to the original with plenty of feel good grooves.

Review: Magic In Threes' latest 7" single 'Push The Rock' comes as a rather experimental funk cut, and perhaps one that could only be made today. With the ghostly vocals of fellow Tennessee vocalist Amber Woodhouse gliding across the mix, this one's a veritable funk roller, floating on the vibe rather than leaning to far into disparate sections. With the band heavily inspired by old film soundtracks, obscure hip-hop tapes and library music, we can certainly hear that an added sense of eclecticism and exploration has gone into this track, informed not merely by funk alone.

Review: Inokashira Rangers are renowned for their ska/reggae covers of some of the world's best-known songs, with versions of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Creep' and 'I'm Not In Love', all laid to sweet 7" over the years. Here they team up with regular collaborating singer Sofia Manari, who takes centre stage in covering two J-pop classics closer to home. 'Love Squall', originally written by jazz great Yuji Ohno, hears a vocal rendition, while Mariya Takeuchi's 'Plastic Love' gets a similarly jubilant reworking on the B.

Review: The third missive from crate-digging reissue specialists Discs of Fun & Love offers up a new pressing of a suitably obscure and hard-to-find private-press gem, Maggie Epting's sole single as Mandisa, 1981's "Summer Love". The song itself is superb: a wonderfully breezy and sun-kissed slab of dewy-eyed soul that sees Epting deliver an emotive lead vocal over a jazz-funk influenced smooth soul groove and plenty of spacey, intergalactic synthesizer sounds. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side "Love's Dream", a quirky, sax-laden slab of electric jazz that features an even bolder and more ear-catching Epting vocal. It's very good, though the real killer resides on the A-side.

Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Review: Thomas Blanchot aka Mato's love for reggae runs deep. His love for soul music is just as equal. So, what should a producer do who enjoys making original music but also enjoys the art of sampling? Use both! Known for creating reggae/dub versions and then using popular lyrics sung by a guest vocalist over the top of them, giving the original versions a new life and sometimes, a completely different feeling, in some ways working even better than the original. Here, Mato takes the 1981 hit by Sylvia Striplin 'You Can't Turn Me Away' and a super laid back reggae rhythm underneath as a base. And it works so well. Complete with the dub version for the DJs. Review: Rachel Maxann is a globetrotting vocal talent from Memphis, whose newfound recognition in the soul scene owes to her many latest tours and live performances, both in the city and around the world. And that's not to mention her deft and cheeky fusions, such as that of Motown and indie rock. Now two originals for Original Gravity surface, hearing her embark on building up a recorded music edifice, after two contributions to the label's split singles series appeared last year. 'Time Flies With You' is a paean to love made in the dance, hearing Maxann jollily note the atemporal feeling of spending time with her favourite person. Relations are soured on the B-side, however, with 'Why Can't You Miss Me Too?' revealing the melismatic potential in Maxann's voice, not to mention a penchant for dramatic, heartbroken storytelling.

Review: The Mayberry Movement's 'I Can See Him Loving You' is a Northern Soul masterpiece that was supposed to be released in 1974 but ultimately never was. Why, no know can work out, because it is such a lovely tune it would have been a real classic. This take on Ray Dahrouge's original song is drenched in heart-aching soul with uplifting grooves helping to ease the pain. It has a grand and steamy finale, too and is backed with a lively B-side balad to swell the heart. A real doozy that finally sees the light of day.

Review: We owe a lot to Toni Mazzotti, the son of Ana Mazzotti, for this one as it is apparently he who unearthed his mother's 'O Filho Do Homem' single. It is thought to have been recorded by the late Brazilian composer and keyboardist in Brazil in 1983 and is the only thing she recorded in the eighties. It is one of many unreleased tunes the great musician played on TV Cultura and Programa MPB during the 80s. Each show proved her skills as she moved into the more hard edge and experimental sounds while always staying true to her roots in jazz, samba and funk.

Review: This hugely in demand modern soul masterpiece gets a special 40th anniversary reissue thanks to the Selector Series label. Originally released on New Jersey's Debbie Records in 1981, the label has dug into the archives to find a boogie-tactic reworking on a classic standard from The Carpenters. Often seen listed for over L400 on second hand markets, it is a serious collector's piece. It's been reissued as part of various albums over the years but never on a slick 45rpm like this. It comes with original artwork and will have any dance floors in a spin.

Review: Two rare Motown originals from Barbara McNair, the American soul singer, actress and early Chicago favourite. The subject of many a bootleg, 'It Happens Every Time' has retained its place in soul history perhaps thanks to its use of a rather cinematic string breakdown, euphoric as it is predictive of similar motifs in disco. 'You're Gonna Love My Baby', meanwhile, is a more formalistic jaunt, dealing in the subject of continually being beaten down. Two exquisite snapshots of the 60s.

This is another crucial soul 45 from the always on fire Burning Soul and one that improves your collection of wallowing soul gems no end.

Review: Given that the last time this prime slab of Texan funk appeared on wax was way back in 1969, we'd say this special Record Store Day 2020 reissue is long overdue. A-side 'Iron Leg' is a bona-fide bomb: a fuzzy, low-slung, psychedelic-era instrumental funk smasher rich in hazy Hammond stabs, mazy solos, crunchy breakbeats, rising horn riffs and insanely weighty bass. It comes backed with 'Chocolate', a similarly bass-heavy but slightly jazzier instrumental funk workout that's well worth dancefloor spins. Original copies regularly change hands for three figure sums, so copping this essential reissue will save your bank balance (or leave plenty spare to buy other killer funk records!).

Review: Athens of The North delivers once again here with another delightful reissue of a soul classic by Bernetia Miller And The Soul Groovers. An original of this Georgian gem is insanely rare and in fact the Athens boss himself has never actually seen a copy. It was recorded in the studio of Phil Walden's studio in Macon, Georgia and Bernetia herself has said it took many takes and plenty of hard work to get the result they wanted. Backing band The Soul Groovers had their own bus on which they toured plenty and this reissue is from the master tapes owned by Bernetia. 'You Can Tell Me Goodbye' has lo-fi drums and raw horns with a yearning vocal while 'I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You' is more slow and steady and emotionally moving with a more tender vocal.

Review: Over the years, the rare West Virginian soul gem, Garnet Mimms' 'Looking For You', saw many different release iterations. Originally out in 1966, it was first pitted alongside Mimms' B-side 'I'll Take Good Care Of You', providing certain hitmakership for the R&B emoter and his then label, United Artists. Several versions later, however, and we come to now, with the song now appearing in stereoized glory with its true soulmate: 'As Long As I Have You'. From the change in track (and in turn, the track title) we get the sense that Mimms truly found love and intends to keep it; the song is a swinging barrage of sensual, monogamous joy, and is remastered here for our 7-inched pleasure. Review: The 45 Loves crew brings more prime dance floor heat here with a double hip hop single that drips with classic references. The first side, 'G', has boss rhymes from a pair of MCs and some lush backing vocals that add the velvet, while big trumpets and deep cut beats provide the groove. On the flip, things get more sweet and laid back, with a rolling beat riding up and down beneath nice Rhodes chords, lush strings and smooth female flow that cannot fail to bring the good times.

Words like suave, cosmopolitan, lustrous and precise all come to mind when listening to the two tracks that make up this tidy 7", the second on the US label CQQL. Opener 'What's On Your Mind' is a low slung, bumping groove with lo-fi production and an aching vocal and on the flip it gets stripped right back and made into a warm, romantic late night dub.

Review: Soul Brother home in on a rare gem from Mojoba, 'Say You Will', a paean for intra-relationship commitment in the mode of soul. Recorded in the mid-to-late 1970s as a B-side for the then already wildly succesful 'I Know', 'Say You Will' was an unpredicted sleeper hit, perhaps owing to its high-slung vocals and deft unisons between guitar backings and impeccable drum swangs. A comparatively funky Southern soul number, its Sam & Dave-style harmonies oscillate away, to an endearing extent.

Singer-songwriter Mona, who recently moved from Ukraine to Germany with her production partner MC Fame, goes head-to-head with instrumental supergroup Hammerbrook Sound Machine (a five-member troupe boasting members of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and the Mighty Mocambos plus MC Fame on Moog solo duties. Review: San Francisco Bay Area soul band Monophonics's 'Beggin' is their own fine cover version of a song originally released by Franki Valli & The Four Seasons. It has been covered and sampled by a number of other acts who have done a fine job of popularising it, but this version by this large and often rotating cast of musicians is one that truly brings something different. It has a retro 60s soul sound in the gauzy guitars, while the rolling drums hit hard with extra texture from further psyched-out guitar lines. An instrumental is included for those who prefer a more direct approach.
