Review: Say She She is the psychedelic soul group from Brooklyn that's exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and the pleasure of touring Europe and North America, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Authentic and organic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 attempt at foraying into disco 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' wasn't received amazingly at the time, but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is zany and expressive against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This 7" contains both Spencer's original track and the interpretation by the trio, pressed on white vinyl.

Review: UK Northern soul-food wholesalers Kent Dance are experts in procuring and supplying and continue to stick their necks out in this regard with a brand new reissue of The Soul Children's 'Standing In The Safety Zone', backed up by Sylvia And The Blue Jays' 'Put Me In The Mood' on the flip. The former track is an androgyne vocal soul, car-stereo'ed burst of joy, on which, despite the overarching feel of ecstasy, we hear duetting singers Anita Louis' and John Colbert's lyrics sing of remaining in one's comfort zone, which depending on the interpretation could either be heard as sardonic or earnest. Sylvia and co.'s B-side sounds as great as ever, being the breathy, flirtatious number it always was, yet with its best elements fleshed out ever-further by this 7" pressing.

Review: The Summits are a beloved fixture on the Soul Direction label and have plenty of fans in the wider soul collecting community. As a result they are now familiar to many and their track 'Window Shopping' emerged from an almost-lost master tape. It has previously been available only in digital format. on the flip, meanwhile, Phillips traverses diverse musical territories spanning from feel-good disco to funky fusion and modern soul. Among the six tracks recovered from numerous tapes, this one, 'People Clap Your Hands' stands out. It has never before been on vinyl and is a lo-fi, funk fuelled gem with soul infused vocals.

Review: By the time "Touch Me In The Morning" was mailed out to American DJs in 1979, Marlena Shaw has long since established herself as one of soul music's greatest voices. "Touch Me In The Morning" was merely a promo-only affair, remixed from the shorter "Take A Bite" album version - but it did become something of a dancefloor anthem in certain underground clubs. Here, the sought-after 12" is given a replica reissue, with the stomping, string-drenched title track being accompanied by exactly the same B-side cuts as the '79 pressing.

Review: Expansion's latest must-have release brings together two killer cuts from Sylvia Striplin's brilliant 1981 album "Give Me You Love", which originally appeared on Roy Ayers' Uno Melodic label. Ayers produced and arranged both cuts alongside regular collaborator James Bedford. "Give Me Your Love" is, of course, something of an anthem in underground disco circles, with Striplin's breathy and emotionally rich vocal rounding off a superb cut that's rich in crunchy Clavinet lines, walking bass, snappy drums, sensual synth doodles and rising horns. Flipside "You Can't Turn Me Away", meanwhile, is closer in sound and vibe to Roy Ayers' jazz-funk cuts from the period, which is no bad thing.

Review: Sangre Joven was originally a side project that was set up to release covers of international disco and funk hits for Discos MAG. The collective was started in Peru in 1974 by sax player Nilo Espinosa who also assembled the Nil's Jazz Ensemble after spending years playing in a jazz quintet in Berlin. 'Zamba Zamba' is a tsingle from 1974 that is a true-to-the-original cover of 'Samba Samba' by Colombian brothers Elkin & Nelson. It brings plenty of exotic sounds with uptempo Latin vibes, elements of descarga and boogaloo and more all served up with a funky rock twist.

Review: The Sextones are a four-piece soul band from Reno, Nevada, who blend elements of rock, pop, and funk with a deep and mournful soul primacy. Fitting squarely into that oeuvre is their latest 'Beck & Call', which recalls their dearest inspirations - the likes of The Moments, Baby Huey and Curtis Mayfield - for two equally powerful falsetto'ing slow jams. The title track is the more emotive standout, channelling a hefty drum forward plod, lilting strings, soul-foundational bass, and lyrics dealing with letting go of a lost cause. Review: Say She She are emergent stars of the NYC scene, pooling considerable talents from various parts of the world into a brew which feels wholly appropriate for the Big Apple. Upholding the open-hearted values of the downtown scene, they turn their hand to dexterous disco-not-disco get-down on ‘Reeling’ without ever sounding referential. Meanwhile on the flip they sink down into a more sultry mood, riding dusty, delicate drums and radiant Rhodes as a vehicle for some unreal vocal harmonies and a sound so cosy you could wrap it around you to stave off the winter.

Review: Chicago collective Starvue's sole album, 1980's Upward Bound, has long been considered something of an underground classic by disco, soul and jazz-funk collectors, with numerous reissues and bootleg editions of the album appearing at various points over the last four decades. This licensed seven-inch single boasts two of the set's most potent tracks: single 'Body Fusion', a super-sweet, string-drenched slab of dewy-eyed jazz-funk/disco fusion that has been sampled on numerous occasions by house and nu-disco producers, and the lesser-celebrated 'Put The BS Aside'. Review: You'll struggle to find a more loved-up and life-affirming chunk of proto-disco brilliance than The Sisters Love's 1973 "Give Me Your Love". The record's lasting impact can be seen in the number of times that it's been reworked, re-edited or bootlegged over the years. Here it gets an official 7" reissue via Soul Brother Records. It sounds as good as ever, with the all-female group's now familiar vocals rising above Blaxploitation style guitars, fluttering flutes and powerful horns. It's a celebratory release, and then some. This time round it's accompanied by a lesser-known gem, "Try It, You'll Like It", which first featured on the B-side of a 1973 single. This is a powerful chunk of conscious funk/soul fusion of the sort that was incredibly popular during the period it was recorded.

Here one of her biggest hits 'Give Me Your Love' is presented on a 7" for the first time with 'You Said' on the flip. The a-side is the one with its big funky licks, low slung bass line and celebratory riffs all finished off with the glorious vocal itself. 'You Said' is a more jazzy and low key number, with swirling drums and hip swinging claps taking you later into the night on a more cosy and personal vibe.

Review: Satin Finish started out as a trio of Goldsboro musicians namely Donald Oliver on keys, Joe Exum on drums and Dennis Kornegay on bass. They were all scouted to the Greenback Records label out of New Jersey by two producers by the names of George Greene and Gary D. Jackson. High school graduate Karen Scott was the band's vocalist and here she does a fine job across a pair of stunning and spine tingling cuts of soul drenched, mid tempo disco funk. 'Took A Chance On Love' has great harmonies and dancing keys to get you moving and 'Didn't Wanna Lose Your Love' is the more sentimental slow song for smoochy moments.

Review: Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band were an U.K. based soul band, active between 1965 - 1968. Born William Francis Washington in Evanston, Indiana, Geno joined the airforce marching band and, after leaving high-school, was transferred to England - a week before his 18th birthday. His previously unreleased session recording featured here is 'If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)' Also featured is 1965 Northern Soul number 'The Drifter', another unreleased Pye recording originally recorded in America in 1965. It was released in the U.K. the next year, where it was covered by English-Canadian Long John Baldry.

Soon, the London-based label will be releasing a previously unheard album from former Stax and Gamma act Sons of Slum, who were once said to be Chicago's finest live act of the 1970s. The seven-piece ensemble are in blistering form on "Music Is Message", a life-affirming anthem built around thrilling horn lines, great group vocals and the kind of driving, bass-heavy disco-funk groove that makes you want to throw some serious shapes. In contrast, "Show Me Tell Me" is an altogether more relaxed affair, with the group singing a song of love over a deeper and groovier backing track.

Review: Izipho Soul once again link up with Sound of Superbad here on a super smooth and seductive funk 7". This one raises the bar even in comparison to the super nice 'I Want Cha' last time out. Chicago-based singer extraordinaire Robert IMtume Owens is the man who offers up his beautifully buttery tones, which are layered over nice classy drums and warm synths, with trumpets and strings all adding ear golden texture. The 'S.O.S. Vibe Mix' on the flip is a heavier jam thanks to the more direct percussion, but with everything else also turned up it's still a super lush tune with those vocals doing plenty of great work.

Review: The red hot 45 series from Dynamite Cuts continues apace with more gold carefully dug out from the rich archives of George Semper. This is the first time ver these tunes have been on 7", and the pressing is limited to 600. "Got To Find A Way To Make Some Money" is a sentiment we can all relate to right now. The tune will certainly lift your spirits though with its rousing vocal harmonies, cheery trumpets and vibe spreading soul sounds. "The Weight" (instrumental) is more intense, somehow, with bristling rhythm sections and lo-fi organs all serving up the heat.

Review: Soul Brother Records' Record Store Day 2020 release offers up re-mastered versions of two hard-to-find early 'disco mixes' of modern soul-era gems. On the A-side you'll find Tom Moulton's scarce, five-minute club version of soul man Bobby Moore's '(Call Me Your) Anything Man', a delightfully orchestrated and super-sweet dancefloor workout built around a Latin-tinged groove reminiscent of Grace Jones' 'La Vie En Rose', which of course Moulton later famously remixed. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour West End Records' boss Mel Cheren's wonderfully over-the-top dancefloor extension of obscure vocal group Sweet Music's soaring cover of K.C & The Sunshine Band favourite 'I Get Lifted'. It's very different to their much-loved take, but every bit as essential.

Review: This rather rare and emotionally raw disco bomb from Jackie Stoudemire & Al Stewart landed back in 1998 and often fetches upwards of L300, if you can find it. It now gets a full remaster and is presented with replica artwork for Record Store Day 2020. Opening salvo 'Dancing' is an uplifting jam with laid bare vocals soaring over a tight, kinetic rhythm section. After the dancing thrills of that one, 'The Two Of Us' is a more sentimental slow dance for lazy Sundays, and 'Running' closes out the triptych somewhere in between, with soaring strings and life-affirming Rhodes riffs.

Review: George Semper's 1984 album Themes For Television, Sports and Aerobics is one of the most brilliantly bonkers you're ever likely to hear. It featured the veteran jazz-man reach for the most intergalactic-sounding electronic instruments he could find and lay down a series of short, library music style missives that still sound like the product of some kind of demented acid trip. The people behind Dynamite Cuts are obviously fans, because they've decided to stick a small selection of cuts from the hard-to-find album on this tidy 7" single. On the A you'll find the deep space, jazz-fired electro-lounge madness of "Pretty Lady", while the flip boasts two shorter cuts: jazzy synth-scape "Universe" and spacey ambient doodle "Extraterrestrial Search Contact Tones".

Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.
