Review: Willie Tee asked to 'Bring on the Heartaches' back in the 70s on the Gator Records label. It was one of the American keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter and producer's most noted tuns despite putting out some 25 plus singles and three albums across his career. It's one that will now catch you not far off L100 for a decent second hand copy but this welcome reissue makes it available to one and all once more. It's a super sweet blend of the heart melting soul and gentle funk sounds for eh day on the a-side, while things get even more wrought and trent on the flip 'Take Your Time.'

Review: William, Bertram and Randy Brown are legendary Memphis soul singers who released an album Facing The Music back in 2009 as TEN-63. It had been recorded many years before and featured 'You And Me' which was already a cult fav. It now gets pressed up to this delightful 7" backed with 'Say We'll Stay'. Both are gorgeously arranged songs with sexual sax motifs and plenty of longing in the buttery baritone vocal. The harmonies too are sublime and it's not hard to see why this brotherly threesome had such a big impact on their local Memphis scene with magic like this.

Review: Dimitri From Paris has previously reworked classic Ten City cuts - most notably 'That's The Way Love Is' - so it's fitting that he's been given the chance to rework one of the legendary house outfit's most recent tunes, 2021 revivalist disco gem 'Be Free'. His extended A-side remix is terrific: a hybrid jazz-funk/disco/boogie-soul gem that builds brilliantly via layered acapella and groove-focused sections before introducing the vocals and reaching for the lasers. Over on the flip, the French veteran delivers a 'Dubstrumental' take that brilliantly showcases different aspects of the track's superb, organic instrumentation whilst keeping both eyes firmly on the dancefloor. Review: Thee Marloes are next up on the popular and brilliant Big Crown label with two seductive soul sounds. This is a 45rpm debut from this band and a fine one too that comes all the way from their homeland of Surabaya, Indonesia. As such this is a wide mix of sounds from American soul, jazz, and pop with plenty of local culture and influences. The A-side is an upbeat jam with dancefloor grooves and ear worm melodies while the flip is a different vibe entirely with wide open space used beautifully and great Indonesian vocals.

Review: Those superb soul overs at Big Crown have dug deep again and unearthed a new one from Thee Marloes, who turn out a ballad sung in Indonesian. It's an inescapably exotic vocal and it comes over a stripped down track made from lovely hand drums, warm electric piano, and super guitar lines. This tune comes as the Thee Marloes are in the midst, we're told, of working on their new album but whether it is a tune from it is unsure. On the B-side of the 45rpm is 'True Love', another heartwarming gem with worldly charm and unforgettable grooves.

Review: Thee Sacred Souls dropped a well-received debut album last year after a great run of singles, all of which came on the Penrose label out of Spain. They have already started with more singles post that LP and 'Future Lover' is next up. The title tune takes up the a-side with its slow-motion soul, languid guitar licks and gorgeous vocal harmonies. Fans of Leon Bridges or Khruangbin will love this one. Review: This fine new double-sided soul release from Soul4Real features two legendary producers and one legendary singer. When Dionne Warwick joined Warner Brothers in 1972 it brought an end to her work with Bacharach and David and saw her hook up with new soul producers of the era such as Holland/Dozier/Holland, Jerry Ragovoy and Thom Bell. The ensuing collabs are some of the best in her career and include two incredible mid-70s tracks that feature here. This essential 45 was unheard for almost 40 years but then made it to CD in 2003 and now vinyl. Essential stuff.

Sanders was the first to record and release it on February 14, 1969 and it has since been covered by the likes of Don Cherry, Krokodil, The Dynamics, Lord Echo and many more artists right up to the present day. Review: Washington D.C. jazz funk group released their album Vibes Of Truth in 1975 on Fantasy, and it was bursting with elevated soul which would almost certainly appeal to fans of The Temptations, Gil Scott-Heron and the like. 'If Only I Could Prove To You' is a deep cut from the album, and it's been unearthed by Expansion and given pride of place on this 7", backed up by the album's opening track 'I Need You Girl'. This is life-affirming, classically-crafted stuff with a richly ornamented production, and it's loaded with enough sunshine to brighten the darkest depths of a winter's day, so imagine how good it sounds while we're in the summer months.

Review: What with their super-rare rare groove album "Synchronised" fetching four figures and some of their key singles rocking similarly big price tags, Columbus soul troupe are renowned for their sought-after wax collectables. It's not hard to hear way. Review: Unlike many of their compatriots, Timeless Legend were a soul group who didn't limit themselves to a killer, one-off EP before disappearing into the shadows. Believe us when we say that this is basically what happened to most bands in the 70s. In the case of these guys, they stuck around for a series of albums and singles that have remained engrained in every collector's memory, and that now go for big bucks on the second-hand market. "Everybody Disco" is their 1979 masterpiece, a tune that encapsulates the disco movement perfectly, from the beats to the bass and even the synths. Every bit of lo-fi funk and disco this label deals in comes with a healthy dose of romance and this one from Marshall Titus is another case in point. 'Take A Chance' is full of steamy promise and retro-future 80s synth work over crunchy drums. The vocal is alluring and sensuous and the bassline further pulls you in. Review: T. J. Johnson's 'Pretty Lady' is a glorious sweet spot between disco, boogie and funk that came back at the heyday for that sort of sound back in 1982. It's been dug out of the Switch label vaults which was a UK label run out of Lansdowne Studios. T.J. Johnson was a well-versed guitarist also known as T.J. Bedeau and he is still working the gig circuit today. 'Pretty Lady' is a slick and smooth groover with florid horn stabs and the sort of lush vocals that bring the love. 'Come On Let's Do It (Let's Rock)' is more upbeat and strident but just as warm.

Review: Hitomi Toyama's 'Sweet Soul Music' originally made it to wax last year, when the track appeared as part of a rare Japanese funk compilation curated by the sound's brightest stars, Wamono. Now, though, it gets a proper release on 7", and is backended by the sultry B-side 'Wanna Kiss', which sounds pitched up and chirpy in its shrill alto vocals, which assure us we're held. The A, meanwhile, is as horny (in both senses of the word) as ever, quite obviously singing the praises of "sweet soul music... I love you!"

Review: With Cordial Recordings, LoveVinyl's Roual Galloway is doing a terrific job in making rare, sought-after tracks available to a wider audience. In truth, you'll struggle to find a more rare and expensive gospel killer than The Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride The Gospel Train", a drum machine driven chunk of gospel-boogie with crunchy funk guitars that's been changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and it's easy to see why. Flipside "Give it Glory", a solo cut by Tolbert Family patriarch Brother OC Tolbert, is a sweeter and breezier slab of gospel-soul that has never before been released on vinyl. Two killer cuts for the price of one: nice one, Roual!

Review: Floating Points reissued the 1976 debut album Open Soul from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists six-member outfit Tomorrow's People on his Melodies International imprint. Now P-Vine serve up a couple of singles from it, one of which has had a T Groove edit. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles, 'Open Soul' has a rubbery bassline and sock chord work with some big vocals and smooth grooves. It is an epic trip into space-soul territory. On the flip is 'It Ain't Fair', a much more slow and sentimental cut with romantic vocals and yearning chords.

Review: If you're looking for an introduction into the world of original 1970s and '80s gospel funk and gospel soul, you can't do better than Tone B Nimble's ongoing Soul is My Salvation series of double A-side "45s". This is the eighth edition in the series and contains two more thoroughly obscure workouts. On the A-side you'll find Bibleway Church of God in Christ's 'Since Jesus Came Into My Life', a fizzing gospel-soul stomper that was first featured on the organisation's 1980 private press LP What Do You Say About Jesus. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Eliezer Mass Choir's 'Where He Leads Me', a more disco-tinged number that reminded us a little of the Joubert Singers' much-loved 'Stand on the Word'.

'Tigre' and 'Gennarino 'O Sioux'' saw extreme demand after becoming instant cult classics. The bass is tight and the vocal melodies are instant foot tappers, you'll be humming it for hours.
