Review: Weirdo minimal tech soul, anyone? Any takers should be directed towards this oddball release from Melchior Productions and Paul Walter. Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. It's an impressive first foray for Maria Newyen's new imprint Scious; let's hope future 12"s stay just as weird.

Review: Mega eerie techno from Germany's own Michael Melchner, proving techno can indeed be done differently, not least when its groceries are in season. Active since 2008, springboarding his career with the label and masters of German uniformity and drab, Cargo Edition, Melchner has since flown the nest into further-afield aerations with Paragram, Bloop Recordings and now, Different Times. 'New World Supermarket' truly sounds to be a grim sort, with the title track, together with the ensuing 'The Voyeur', 'Anatomicouture', and 'Kolonne Null', painting a rather anxious, suspenseful and brutalist picture of future grocery shopping. The closing track is something of a cathartic let-up compared to the first three, its pace relatively downtempo and its choice of samples roomy and sci-fi, though the creep factor still ever-so-slightly remains.

It's fair to say that slamming grovers are still at the heart of these four cuts, but often with more nuanced electronics, twitchy synths and booming bass that is suited for darker back rooms rather than festival main stages. Good work Ryan, we already look forward to hearing more.

Review: WestBam and Klaus Jankuhn conceived Members Of Mayday as a production team to produce the official anthems for each edition of the Mayday rave events in Germany. While that project disbanded in 2014 after more than 20 years, now the definitive of all the Mayday anthems is being revisited on Electric Ballroom. The original 'Mayday Anthem' came out in 1992, and it's absolutely redolent of the times with its killer rave stabs and proto-trance atmosphere, but there's still a welcome roughness to the tune which would soon be lost once production values and budgets started soaring. Offering something a little different on the A-side, Thomas Schumacher goes in hard with a romping arpeggio which sounds like Giorgio Moroder on steroids, strapping it under the track's classic elements to brilliant effect.

Review: Vault Records kicks off with its first release here from Stef Mendesidis who wastes no time in laying down some enthralling techno cuts that journey deep into space and time. This no-nonsense four tracker kicks off with 'The Suspect Zone', a paranoid and psychedelic cut that burrows deep into the next dimension. 'Crocodile's Grin' has gurgling acid lines running through the deep, heavy drum loops and 'Kraken' is an edgy one with unresolved stabs keeping you in suspense as 'Nisha' then shuts down with more Jeff Mills-style beep-techno minimalism.

Review: Stef Mendesidis is a Greek DJ and producer now based in Russia. After releases on underground imprints such as Semantica, Projekts and Ben Sim's Symbolism, he proves he really is on the ascent with this killer EP for Ben Klock's esteemed imprint. The three cuts on Klockworks 23 merge the best of direct and impactful big room techno with the atmospheric textures of deeper/hypnotic strains as best heard on the ethereal opener "Valley Of Machines" and "Senzo" in particular, which evokes those adrenalised moments with your eyes closed under the strobe light. The real killer on here is "Gendarme Classe A", a mentalist thriller that nails that Berghain 9 AM vibe so perfectly with its devilish Mike Parker style loops and claps on the kick for added impact.

Review: Hailing from the brilliant, tangled web orbiting Future Sound Of London, Mental Cube was one of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' short-lived side projects which found them indulging in the bleep and acid house sound. Given the talent at the controls, it's little wonder this release became such a holy grail - a misfit twist on the conventional formula of club records at the time and yet still as satisfying as any of the more widely played early 90s hits. This is the first time the release has been reissued in its true original form, meaning both mixes of 'So This Is Love' and the 'Santa Monica Mix' of 'Q'. Listen out for the cheeky nod to 808 State on 'So This Is Love' - a respectful tip of the hat rather than a cheeky lift, we'd say.

Review: 'State Of Mind' by Mephisto was originally released in 1992 as an Italian house precursor to trance. The single, receiving four mixes, was among the many wax releases to propel the producer (real name Maurizio D'Ambrosio) to longlasting acclaim, thanks to an affiliation with the label Palmares Records & Tapes. This new re-edit from Renaissance Records hears the 1992 version on the B with a 2022 rerub on the A by none other than UK house pushers Gorgon City.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Styrax has the rights to a great reissue of some long-lost but enduring classic cuts from Merv here. Written in 1995 and 1998 they are archetypal dub techno rollers that draw as much from the European school of Basic Channel as they do the lo-fi depths of Detroit. 'Dust' opens up with warm and humid chords over elegant and rolling beats that cannot fail to sweep you up, then 'Melted Vein' offers a more driving but no less hypnotic sound, this time with sleek tech pads peeling over the airy hi hats and bouncing kicks to take you up amongst the stars. Perfect for those zoned-out, low-lit basement moments at 5am. Quality tackle.

Review: The Hubble EP was originally put out by Metroplex Social Club aka the super talented trio of Optic Nerve, Strand, Posatronix and Marty Bonds back in 2003 and it has since become a huge Detroit anthem, with iconic synths and strings. It is powered by a serious hard-assed kick drum and a lush bassline featuring three melodies at once. It's funky, groovy, and sure to fire up any dance floor whether indoors at night or outdoors in the open air, and now gets a welcome reissue that is "dedicated to Juan Atkins and the spirit of Metroplex Records". Review: Following a standout contribution to the 'Elevate' compilation, Mha Iri steps up for her Drumcode EP debut. Continuing Scotland's grand techno tradition, the Edinburgh-based DJ/producer is one of 2023 breakout artists; her debut EP on the label is a tantalising prospect, with 'The Unexpected' playing with trademark light-and-dark motifs, mixing up sharp percussive elements with ethereal melodies, before a ripping bass drop takes the energy up a notch. 'Let The Good Times Roll', meanwhile, is a slick accompaniment, as atmospheric techno gets supercharged via a punchy rap vocal and laser-kissed chords.

Balthazar & JackRock offer up something epic on the B-side with the towering electro house synth touches of 'Andromeda', and LO'99 links up with Ray Foxx to round the record out with the playful vocal hiccups and undulating big room groove of 'Skydance'.

Review: We will likely never know what it is that makes the underground electronic scene in Detroit so fertile and unique. Whoever appears from the Motor City, they seem to have their own unique sound but one that very much gets with the historic aesthetic of the 313 area code. Enter Derek Michael who keeps up that tradition with this excellent six tracker on Detroit Underground, which arrives on nice coloured wax. His take on house end techno is deep, raw, unhurried. His drums stay low on 'Cruise Control' while the grinding bass locks you in and unsettling synths hang in the air above. 'No U Turn' is heavy and lumpy with off-grid chords adding to the loveable wonkiness.

Review: The Cabaret label is one of those buy-on-sight outlets such is the consistency of the output it puts out. Michelle steps up for this latest EP and immediately hooks us in with a raw, mysterious tech sound filled with rugged bass and curious melodies over sharp metallic drums. 'Glowforge' ups the ante with razor-sharp spinning hi-hats and edgy sustained chords that keep you very much on the edge of your seat. 'Fake Trance' is a punchy one with skittish perc and dramatic oversized hits before the urgent synth stabs come in and closer 'My Sweet Universe' pairs wild and zippy synths with marching drums for that 5AM magic.

Review: Strap in for a punchy techno ride here as Micropulse wastes no time in setting the dial to warp speed on this Midnight EP for Atom Trance Force. The title cut opens up and is a hard techno pumper with some flat footed drum funk and edgy chords up top. 'Doesn't Matter' then has a hands in the air synth lead darting about the mix next to old school trance pads and a warped bassline over more hammering drums. 'Entry' shuts down with a final mix of trance and techno that is are to bring real carnage to the club.

Review: Trust is a long running Viennese electro label run by DJ Glow. Its latest release is a fierce four tracker featuring various artists, all undisputed luminaries of the electronic music scene. On the first side of Trust XY2 you have a true force to be reckoned with in the form of Microthol X Ultradyne with the sinister Detroit computer funk of 'Hostile Invasion' (Land Of Injustice mix) followed by the inimitable Peder Mannerfeldt's industrial-edged reconstruction of Clatterbox's 'Semi-Automatic'. On the second side, UK artist Second Storey provides a re-rub of another track from the Microthol back catalogue on 'Dissonanz' and finally veteran producer Alex Cortex delivers a minimal electro rework of DL-MS' track 'Last Smoke'.

Review: Midland has been smart about his arc as a producer, taking his time rather than churning out releases for the sake of it. As such, when we do get something new from the lad, it always feels like an occasion, and of course the music invariably matches the mood. 'You Never Take Me Dancing' is in fact the B-side opener on this new four-track record, but it plays out like the lead role on an EP bursting with fresh ideas. 'Strangers On The Train' toys with more experimental synthesis and a stripped back mix down that takes its cues from footwork, while 'Drift Into The Algorithm' plays out as the slinkier, shimmering house he's perhaps been better known for of late. The class and consideration just spills out of this record - more than worth waiting for.

Stream Of Thoughts (feat John Shima remix) (heavyweight vinyl 12")

Review: Mihail P brings us a 4 tracker, including a special John Shima remix. We start with the title track "Relinquish", a nice journey through deep space at a modest tempo. It features electro breaks rhythm patterns and harmonics to send you in to orbit. Following is "Shifting", a more acid tech vibe and straight 4/4 chugger, in line with proper Detroit / UK lushness from the 90's and forward. Flip to the B side for "Reliquish John Shima remix". It's hard to say which track is the peak, but this one's a contender. John Shima is known for his signature bleepy, but danceable sound. He adds layers of synth programming intelligence and great basslines as usual. Finally the B2 "Close to Zero" is the closing tune. Similar to the opener, we find more electro breaks, synth basses and a cool pad to complete the perfect journey.

Review: On The Button has been hosting parties in Leeds now for around a year. They have been successful, too, which is no mean feat in a city that has seen more than its fair share of nights come and go in a little over a few months. Now the Yorkshire born founder Miles steps out with debut EP to encapsulate the identity of the brand. It makes for a varied listen with spaced out electro-tech to start, gritty electro menace on 'Depths of Mind', a thumping space cruise on 'Nights over Yorkshire' and darker workout on 'Conscious Exploration.'

Review: As Jeff Mills returns to his third deepest obsession after 909s and UFOs, he presents an addendum to his renewed Metropolis Metropolis soundtrack which doubles down on three of the themes and gives them a different framework through the lens of a 12". This is still the more cinematic end of the Millsian spectrum, but there's some intensity which may well be of use to the more dramatic or daring techno DJ. 'The Dance Rebellion Starts' is plenty loopy and disorienting, full of interwoven, clangorous patterns which should stay nicely in time if you get them locked in the mix. 'The Other Maria' might well be the star of the show though, a nightmarish, ever-building drone piece with some half-time percussion stalking around the edges for guidance. 'Freder's Reality Switch' completes the picture with a slightly more stable synths n' strings piece, but there's still that innate sense of otherness Mills always threads into his work.

Review: In 2021 we were treated to a new entry in Jeff Mills' venerated Millsart series via the outstanding, house-tinted Think Again 12" and now he's gracing us with more of that sublime, deep-tripping, soul-enriched magic via this frankly outstanding new record. Once again there's an emphasis on warm musicality, not least the piano coursing through 'Nocturnal Moves', but as is Mills' way the melody always teeters on the edge of discord and microtonality, crating a very special kind of spirituality which could well send shivers down the spine of the dancefloor. Demonstrating the full power of his expression as a composer as well as a programmer, Mills sounds utterly inspired on these three new tracks, which sound primed for dramatic scenes when you want to take a crowd somewhere special.

Review: Jeff Mills for Axis Records. Are there any more exciting words for fans of Detroit techno? Here The Wizard assumes his MIllsart alias and once again sets off to explore extra terrestrial soundscapes. The tempo here is slower than under his own name, leaving more space for the sci-fi details and cosmic motifs to really sink in. The beats roll deep, too, with gentle percussive clatter dropped in from above. In the case of 'Breaker Breaker One Nine' the sound is almost Glenn Underground-esque. It is the EP highlight, though the glistening 'The Upside Down' is not far behind.

Review: Melodic techno pair Mind Against bring their expansive sounds to this new EP on Maeve. They kick off in deep and dubby fashion with warm, rolling chords and deft details that work the head as much as the heel. 'Harp' is then a real touch of class - a light, skipping groove with well worked vocal sounds shimmering throughout the mix next to the bubbling drums and bass. 'Prophet' is another mix of heavy low ends and deft melodies, this time from a harp which drifts in and out of ear shot. 'Dawn' is a final stylish mix of sound design and drum programming that has a heavenly and celestial feel.

Review: Minimal Man is the legendary studio partnership between Eon (aka Ian Loveday) and Baby Ford. They cooked up some of minimal's most essential tunes some 20-odd years ago and they have become expensive and highly sought after since. This EP is one of them and it features three killer cuts that will move a dancefloor as much today as ever. 'Make A Move' has a pent-up energy and forward drive that sweeps you up and keeps you locked amongst soft hi-hats and vamping chords. Part 2 is a little darker and more mysterious, with the drum loops a little edgier and the mood that bit more mischievous. 'Stay On' closes down with bubbling drum funk and swirling abstract synth world from deep inside some distant nebula in the sky.

Review: Berlin by-way-of Vancouver duo Minimal Violence are up next on the mighty Berlin institution Tresor, which as both a label and club is back with a vengeance. On Phase 3 we've got four stern and austere techno cuts with serious attitude; whether it's the pitch black TBM punishment of opener 'Flatline' featuring Mad Johnny's screaming vocals, the old-school rave mish-mash of 'Cold' (Sex) incorporating classic motifs like Menstasms, breakbeats, whistles and warehouse techno aesthetics, or the extreme noise terror of 'Focus On That Form' on the B-side that veers violently between jungle and gabber. Fierce!
