Review: Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. In a number of interviews, the might Aphex Twin hinted that he has vast artilleries of tracks stacked up and unreleased, probably more on purpose than out of laziness...or maybe not. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor. This is banging brain dynamite coated in the man's iconic style and flair. Welcome back AFX, and many hats off to Warp for making it happen.

Kognitive
Kognitive (12")
Cat: KEY 021. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Kognitive (6:03)
  2. Memory (5:50)
  3. Perception (5:50)
Review: Aiken is a techno procure from Spain who brings a stylish sound. It's full fat, clean and stylish, with a focus on the art of repetition. HIs tunes are built from simple but well-designed things - rubbery kicks, shakers, spangled synth motifs, and then he just tweaks and teases them all for the hypnotic duration of each track. 'Kognitive' eventually contorts itself into a real banger, 'Memory' is a sci-fi and melodic masterclass a la Luke Slater and then last of all, 'Perception' sinks down into a deep and linear techno tunnel where all of reality becomes distorted and unreal.

Sub Conscious
Sub Conscious (limited 10")
Cat: 10FAB 014. Rel: 05 Dec 14
  1. Erol Alkan - "Sub Conscious"
  2. Phreak - "Acid On"
Review: To complement Erol Alkan's long overdue induction in the Fabric mix hall of fame, the London clubbing institution have pressed up this 10" featuring a rare original production from the Phantasy Sound boss backed with a early 90s rarity from Uwe Schmidt. Within the context of the mix the B Side precedes the A Side, but given how special an Erol Alkan original is, it's no surprise "Sub Conscious" is presented as the main draw here. Undoubtedly inspired by originators such as Hardfloor and Phuture, the acid soaked "Sub Conscious" still has a certain cosmic edge to it, whilst Phreak's "Acid On" sounds just as vital now despite the fact Schmidt originally recorded it some 23 years ago!

  1. Death, Taxes & Hanger (6:59)
  2. Rene Likes The Steak (6:43)
  3. Sam Handwich (6:41)
  4. Dead Whale (8:54)
Review: After five years spent focusing on the more experimental and otherworldly side of his sound, Berlin-based Canadian Aquarian returns to the dancefloor via a two-part EP on Dekmantel's UFO offshoot. There's much to admire on this first EP, with opener 'Death, Taxes & Hanger' delivering a near perfect fusion of skittish old school jungle beats, ten-ton bass, razor-sharp riffs and electronic motifs so beautiful and melancholic they might make you cry. There's a similarly bittersweet feel at the heart of soundscape breakbeat shuffler 'Rene Likes The Steak', while 'Sam Handwich' sounds like an unlikely jam between Kraftwerk, LFO and Dutch electro stalwart I-F. Closing cut 'Dead Whale', meanwhile, is frankly frightening - off-kilter, experimental D&B at its finest.

Review: When it comes to floor-filling tracks that balance smart drum programming with pure melodic bliss, you can always rely on John Beltran to deliver. The five track EP contains masterful ambient pieces with a Detroit/Chicago analog house vibe bringing a warm and psychedelic feel. He joins the label's third release with a brilliant chill-out EP entitled 'The Peninsula', united by another Detroit legend Luke Hess, bringing his traditional 303 upbeat sound remixing 'Begin Again'. Visual artist Alona Rodeh also joins the release showcasing her stunning High-Vis (Future, Black) which featured in her first solo exhibition at the Christine Konig Galerie in Vienna last year.

  1. Surface Air (9:26)
  2. Mohican Trance Leopard (10:22)
  3. Surface Air (Wata Igarashi Air remix) (9:24)
Review: Few artists have quite as impressive a track record of delivering trippy, mind-altering electronic music as Black Merlin, whose previous outings on Berceuse Heroique, Pinkman and Island of the Gods, amongst others, have frequently shifted tone stylistically whilst promoting a pleasingly intoxicated sound palette. 'Surface Air', the lead cut from his latest single, is an immersive, mind-mangling gem that adds psychedelic spoken word vocals to a chugging groove, swirling ambient techno chords and pulsing, stabbing electronics. The accompanying 'Wata Igarashi Air Remix' re-imagines it as a weightless, Pete Namlook style 1990s ambient trip, while bonus cut 'Mohican Trance Leopard' is an ultra-deep chunk of ambient techno hypnotism full of echoing electronics, opaque aural textures and locked-in grooves.

  4. Polykboom (7:23)
Review: Following up some spacey wares by the likes of UhU, Corp and Do Or Die, Berlin-based Saverio Celestri is up next on French label Partout. 'Gorilla' starts out with chiming and hypnotic melodies reminiscent of Jeff Mills before unleashing an acid trance inspired fury, then bringing the tempo down for the trippy rave slow burner 'Halloweeen Track' which takes you into mental overdrive. Over on the flip, Celestri summons you aboard the acid express on the frantic energy of 'Critical Cure' while 'Polykboom' sounds like a cross between Lil Louis and early Underground Resistance - give it a listen and you'll hear what we mean.

Review: You can always be sure that a new record on Delsin will be worth buying. And so it is with this one, which sees CiM return with a nine track opus that has been crafted from his own personal Amiga archives. The project started way back in the 90s and was inspired by the electronica and techno of that time. Simon Walley then set to writing his own sounds via old school tracker techniques and ended up with his own unique style. Most of the tunes here were record own the fly and sound nice and imperfect, lived in and real. There are fire-fly like melodies and crunchy drums, electro basslines and many more gorgeous moments on this tidy record.

Review: Japanese producer Takuya Sugimoto is hugely prolific and for this six track Dei Talk EP he assumed his COLOGNe alias. Originally released on Japanese CD only label Viola in 1999, it offers a great snapshot of his sound where IDM meets techno. These are intelligent tracks that elevate the soul with glistening electronics, inventive drum machine sounds and futuristic ideals. There is loose playfulness on 'Deep Talk,' dark and abstract design on 'Cold White' and heady melody on 'Do Not Cry.'

  10. Mirrors (feat Tanaya Harper) (4:23)
  11. Sapa Inca Delirium (7:50)
Review: Andrew Morrisson aka The Cyclist returns to Hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. It's his fourth, in fact, and is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. Harper is also known for his work under the pseudonyms of Buz Ludzha, Gongue and Affinity Projects with Tanaya Harper: who lends her vocal talents to this very album. The Sapa Inca Delirium LP leans heavily on South American mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that these 11 tracks paint so well across its various tempos and rhythms. The aforementioned Harper lends her fine vocal talents to two of the album's most exciting moments - the funky/psychedelic disco joint "Inhale/Exhale" and the saturated lo-fi house of "Mirrors". Elsewhere, "Forest Surge" fires some breakneck vintage electro style at you and "When We All Break Down" features Joni's seductive vocals over a dramatic breakbeat driven arrangement.

Review: Re: Discovery do us all a favour here by putting out his majestic and dreamy techno album from Deep Space Network. Deep Space Network was a collaborative project by David Moufang aka Move D and Jonas Grossman which explored electronic sounds though a lens of ambient, chill out, sci-f and IDM. It first came on Source Records - Move D's own label - and 27 years later gets vinyl release that it deserves, all with original artwork and a gatefold cover. It's a lush, widescreen affair and album in the truest sense of the word. Would you expect anything less from a master of all styles than David Moufang?

Review: It's been 12 months since Ramon Quezada's last solo EP as DJ Qu. "Heed The Message", then, is arguably long overdue. It's a pleasingly eclectic affair, with the A-side alone boasting both a funk-rock sampling deep house shuffler (the eccentric "May I Say") and a percussively wonky, undeniably druggy fusion of loose-limbed MPC drumming, sustained chords and woozy vocal samples. Over on the flip, Quezada continues to surprise, first by serving up the densely layered tribal drums and rolling jazz bass of "Picazon", then via the hazy, field recordings-laden dub techno/deep house fusion of atmospheric closing cut "Circumvent".

Review: Danish Damien Dubrovnik duo have been releasing psyched-out noise and power electronics since 2009, and the majority of their work has been released through their own sublime Posh Isolation stable. This time, however, they jump start their machines and distortion pedals, and land on the Jealous God imprint; the label is run by a rather startling trio, the combined talents of Karl O'Connor aka Regis, Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant, and James Ruskin. It sounds like Damien Dubrovnik have all the respect they need, then! All four sound sculptures seem tailor made for the label, where glacial drones hint at something otherworldly or religious, and faint pulses can be heard in the background of the mix. It's techno without techno, dance music without the dance, and we love it to bits. Quality.

Review: The Kompakt labels now very much one of the underground's elder statesmen when it comes to techno but the Cologne crew still manage to find new artists to do a fine job of mining its familiar sound. It is debutant Nicky Elisabeth who makes a fine impression here having played at plenty of the label's parties and various European festivals in the last couple of years. Her sounds is synth heavy, spacious and epic techno with shimmering chords and bristling drum work offset by more breathy and soulful vocals. It is a perfect fit for this label.

Review: Since making his mark in the dub techno scene two decades ago, Fluxion has slowly shifted his sound to incorporate a wider range of interconnected influences and inspirations. So, while "Perspectives", his eighth album, has the hazy, half-light pulse of dub techno at its heart, the rhythms are a little bolder, the accompanying electronics more colourful, the melodies jazzier, and the variety of tracks a little wider. As a result, it's one of his most entertaining and mood-enhancing albums yet, with highlights including the rainbow of interconnected melodies and dub-flecked throb of "Formation", the warming late night shuffle of "Glimpses", the piano-sporting haziness of "Down The Line" and the jazzy ambient techno bliss of "Promise".

Review: For the latest volume in their essential reissue series, Tresor has decided to offer up a brand new edition of Robert Hood's celebrated 1994 debut album, "Internal Empire". A quarter of a century after Hood first committed it to wax, it remains one of the Motor City maestro's most potent and inspired works. It effectively defined his throbbing, minimalist style, with heavy and hypnotic cuts such as the bleeping "Minus" and deep and wonky "Within" perfectly encapsulating the stripped-back genius of Hood's production. If you've yet to acquire a copy, we'd recommending grabbing one of these: in truth, no techno collection is complete without it.

Review: There's no mucking about on this latest Token 12" from Ignez, who pairs things right back to only the most core essentials. 'Aura' is super tight and economical but still hugely atmospheric with its clipped kicks and dry hits overlaid with a chopped vocal sound. 'Warrior One' is another one with plenty of pent up kinetic energy in the chattery claps and melodies that dart about the mix like a kid with ADHD. 'Nadi' is then designed to keep you looking over your shoulders while you dance on the tips of your toes and 'Centaurus' comes on strong with blasts of bass and searching synth work.

  12. The Universe In Her Eyes (4:15)
Review: Strahil "Kink" Velchev may well be the hardest-working man in dance music. Each new-year brings a succession of fine singles, with little in the way of fluff or filler. Even so, the vast Playground is only his second album to date (his first, "Under Destruction", appeared in 2014). It is arguably his strongest collection of tracks to date, though. Over the course of the 12 tracks, he brilliantly demonstrates the depth and variety of his influences, variously turning his hand to cinematic downtempo beats ("Samodiva", "The Universe in Her Eyes"), warehouse-friendly peak-time anthems (stab-heavy smasher "Russian"), DJ Sneak/Dj Duke-style big room house ("Perth", 'Organ"), mind-altering experimental dub ("Peter Piet Pete"), Industrial ("Tate of Metal") and, of course, angular analogue techno ("Five", "Teo Techno").

Keen Eyes (12")
Cat: KEY 022. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Akien (6:47)
  2. Sentena (5:45)
  3. Julie (6:27)
  4. Mucuya (7:01)
Review: Germany's Key Vinyl serves up not one but two banging EPs for us this month. David Lohlien is behind this one and is very much at the heart of a new school of techno producer who is doing the simple things right. His loopy, hard hitting sound is perfectly distilled to the core elements. Each one is perfectly meticulous, and together they add up to functional but also well formed techno that races straight ahead. 'Akien' it's glitchy and metallic, 'Sentena' built from wall rattling kicks, 'Julie' brings an eerie vocal to flip you out in the club and 'Mucuya' hammers you over the head and will have you screaming that you love it.

Destination Mars

  1. Destination Mars (7:07)
  2. Destination Mars (Raxon remix) (6:28)
  3. Destination Mars (Shall Ocin remix) (7:05)
Review: While most Drumcode releases are suitably sizable, this EP is particularly large - and not just because it features two huge names in Maceo Plex and Josh Wink. Their original version (A1) is predictably robust and rugged with foreboding low register stabs, metallic clangs, druggy vocal snippets and creepy melodies rising above stomping techno beats. It's a genuinely all-action affair that sounds like a massive room anthem in waiting. Over on side B you'll find two re-rubs: a more melodious Raxon remix that sounds like tech-house on steroids and a deeper, darker, trance-inducing techno take by Shall Ocin.

Review: Jeff Mills for Axis Records. Are there any more exciting words for fans of Detroit techno? Here The Wizard assumes his MIllsart alias and once again sets off to explore extra terrestrial soundscapes. The tempo here is slower than under his own name, leaving more space for the sci-fi details and cosmic motifs to really sink in. The beats roll deep, too, with gentle percussive clatter dropped in from above. In the case of 'Breaker Breaker One Nine' the sound is almost Glenn Underground-esque. It is the EP highlight, though the glistening 'The Upside Down' is not far behind.
