V Issues Vol 1 (transparent vinyl 12")
Cat: 89GHOST 001. Rel: 28 May 14
  1. DJ Peech - "Visions"
  2. Jack Lagoon - "Lookin' At U"
  3. Lucky Lime - "Lucky Lime"
  4. Themis - "Crast"
Review: First volume of house tracks picked from the Velocet catalogue, Nail's previous label, which he ran very badly between 1995 and 1997. Most of the unsold, OG copies now lay in his ex-wife's cellar, covered in mushrooms.
300 on clear vinyl, no repress.

Ways Of The Sun (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: DPC 0711. Rel: 24 Jan 19
  1. Ways Of The Sun (Jimi Jules remix) (8:23)
  2. Ways Of The Sun (Peter Kruder Into The Black Hole remix) (7:22)
  3. Ways Of The Sun (Manuel Fischer remix) (8:38)
  4. Ways Of The Sun (Armitage remix) (6:43)
Review: Second time round for the much-loved "Ways Of The Sun", Frankey and Sandrino's 2015 collaboration with vocalist La Oberg. This time, there's no original mix to admire, but rather a quartet of fresh remixes. Jimi Jules steps up first, wrapping dubbed-out synth splashes and La Oberg's evocative vocal around a loose and languid dub disco-meets-deep house groove, before Peter Kruder re-imagines the track as an acid bass-propelled chunk of analogue deep house goodness. Over on side B, Manuel Fischer dishes up a sunrise-ready organic tech-house take while Armitage slams down a loopy and hypnotic peak-time revision that subtly builds throughout.

Corra Linn (12")
Cat: NMBRS 63. Rel: 25 Oct 19
  1. Corra Linn (5:03)
  2. Moo Orphaned Drift (4:42)
  3. Ferthenheap (3:02)
Review: This Numbers debut by Lanark Artefax is an ode to a waterfall above the Scottish village of New Lanark and comes after his breakout offering on Whities as well as a busy run of live shows that make reference to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bass heavy and melodic, with falling keys and glassy pads raining down the face of each track, "Moo Orphaned Drift" has a cosmic air to it while opening cut "Corra Linn" is an IDM drum flurry, but it is closer "Ferthenheap" which makes the most impact; it's an ambient, emotionally devastating neo-classical piano piece of the highest order.

Carried From Secret Seas (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: RE 16. Rel: 30 Apr 19
  1. Minus 10 (5:16)
  2. Rural Nightline (5:21)
  3. Carried From Secret Seas (5:12)
Review: Re:st regular Lcp has so far proven to be a producer with many musical talents, offering up a string of releases that flit between ambient, techno, IDM and off-kilter dancefloor moves. "Carried From Secret Seas" marks the producer's first solo EP for two years and sees him combine club-ready rhythms with evocative ambient chords and far-sighted, intergalactic electronics. The most robust of the three tracks is "Rural Nightline", a heavy, stripped-back and effects laden drum workout that's as creepy and clandestine as it is tough and intense. The other two cuts, "Minus 10" and "Carried From Secret Seas", are both far more dreamy and positive in tone, with Lcp wrapping ambient textures and soft focus melodies around deep broken techno beats.

Far Behind The Line (limited 7")
Cat: EVENTLTD7 02. Rel: 05 Dec 16
  1. Arnaud Le Texier - "Radar" (4:03)
  2. Staffan Linzatti - "Destination (Minutes)" (4:18)
Review: Brooklyn imprint Chronicle return with a high octane double header here courtesy of two stalwarts of the world techno circuit. First up, Frenchman in London Arnaud Le Texier (who you'd know of from his seminal mid noughties imprint multi.vitamins) appears first on the A side. He proves that he's always remaining on the genre's pulse as demonstrated on the tunnelling and hypnotic sci-fi groove of "Radar". On the flip, the bleeps continue with none other than Staffan Linzatti. The Swedish producer turns in another fine Jeff Mills tribute with "Destination (Minutes)" channelling the early vibes of the American legend's Axis/Purposemaker catalogue featuring adrenalised arpeggios, fierce 909 patterns and majestic pads.

  2. Buck Shot (Matrixxman remix) (6:49)
  3. Mean 2 Me (6:13)
  4. Key 2 Me (5:18)
Review: The fourth installment in the Legwork Records saga sees label heads Lance DeSardi & Leopold come together under the artist moniker LEGWORK. For their first outing under the name they start with BUCK SHOT, a techno-soul chugger featuring a remix by the futurist himself, Matrixxman. On the flip, the boys go in for a straight-ahead killer with MEAN 2 ME and a more musical version of the same tune, KEY 2 ME.

Montpelier/Rumex (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: TIO S3. Rel: 16 Sep 19
  1. Montpelier (5:47)
  2. Rumex (6:19)
Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

Voyage EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ETHRC 002. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. The Offering
  2. Symmetry
  3. The Afterlife
  4. Droplets
Review: Having kicked off his Etheric label with the Origins EP earlier this year, Leonardo is back with more adventurous machine music for the spiritually inclined dancefloor. "The Offering" has a dark and moody tone thanks to the snaking synth line wriggling its way through the track, perfect for eyes-down submission as the strobe blinks slowly. "Symmetry" is a more open affair, all soft top chimes and vapour blasts pinging around an easy electro beat, while "The Afterlife" strikes somewhere in the middle with a tougher, club-minded sound that still favours a sunnier sound palette. "Droplets" is the consummate B2, shrugging off the dancefloor rules of the previous tracks to trip out in a dubwise atmosphere that further strengthens the quality of what Leonardo is up to.

  2. Harmonizer (4:56)
  3. The Drumjazz Leader (4:43)
  4. Consequence (4:56)
  5. Running Out (2:34)
Review: The Opal Tapes off-shoot Black Opal has certainly delivered the goods thus far, having put out EP's by Cloudface, Xosar and J.Albert, among others. Life's Track, the Italian duo made up of Dukwa and the always on-point Herva, appear on one of three inaugural releases to introduce the Black Opal White Label. These are five rugged, gritty and ready-to-use floor tracks for the more versatile of DJs, and here are our top three: "Harmonizer" for its tripping, speedy bombardment of steely percussion, "The Drumjazz Leader" because it reminds us of late '90s Metalheadz gone utterly wrong, and "Consequence" for its nutty, distorted feel. Hotly tipped!!

  1. Hmong Dignity (club mix)
  2. Hmong Dignity (Aaron-Carl remix)
  3. Hmong Dignity (DJ Bone remix)
Review: Fabrice Lig on DJ Bone's Subject Detroit label backed with killer remixes from Aaron Carl and DJ Bone! Allegedly stored in the Subject archives for some time, "Hmong Dignity" is finally unleashed and the original will be familiar to anyone that's witnessed a DJ Bone set in recent years. Eminently raw, but filled with melody thanks to those chords and restless riffs, "Hmong Dignity" is a fine example of how Detroit influenced European techno. A remix from the late, great Aaron Carl opens the B Side, lending the track a familiar dose of murkiness thanks to some stomach churning bass, whilst that instantly recognisable central melody is wisely retained. The accompanying remix from DJ Bone glides along on a tough techno meets electro vibe, superbly slicing up the melodic element to form an entirely different refrain.

  1. Deleted (feat Sara Z)
  2. Always (feat Sara Z)
  3. Fool (feat Angelina Lucero)
  4. True (feat Angelina Lucero)
Review: After a series of self-released tracks and remixes on labels such as Fool's Gold and Guns In The Sun, Jerome LOL jumps over to Friends Of Friends with this stunning four track EP. Expressing his most expansive soundset, each one of these tracks shows a whole new side to him. "Always" sounds like Disclosure performed by a full live band with Sara Z's lyrics hitting spots very few house records ever can. "True", meanwhile, is a cosmic, navel gazing slice of black soul that wouldn't go amiss on a Trentemoller record. Elsewhere we're slapped into slo-mo shuffle submission by "Deleted" and pummelled by industrial strength rhythms on "Fool". An exceptional EP, don't buy this for the LULZ, buy it for the LOL.

  4. Le Syndicat - "Prothesis Pack Xtract 08 (1983)" (3:52)
  5. Le Syndicat - "Maximalist" (Ekman remix) (6:05)
Review: Continuing their uncompromising fusions of artists new and old, Contort Yourself return with a punishing array of industrial thuggery from hardware manipulators you wouldn't take home to your mother. Novacom were last seen on Slumdiscs back in 2014 and here bring a fast and gnarly rhythmic tryst to bear before JK Flesh do their own snagging dance with oppressive synths and drums twirling into a heavyweight whole. French brutalists Le Syndicat then dominate the B-side with their confrontational bastardisation of techno and industrial, making the perfect source material for Ekman to get nasty with on his remix of "Maximalist".

Review: Moscow's Isaiah Tapes are also the guys behind the great Baptismo Alpinismo and Longlife Python sub labels, which are doing great things at the moment. Next up for the label is Charles Torris aka Le Matin, who after a bunch cassette only releases over the past few years releases his first full length. The LP album's six tracks and accompanying bonus CD traverse the galaxy of lowdown smack electro; reminiscent of Dopplereffekt like on "Ma Voisine La Pute" or "Yeah", wacky modular synth improvisation as heard on the charmingly titled "Cat Vomit" or deeply sublime minimal techno as heard on "M05 Michel Platini". Brilliant album from start to finish. Tip!
