Acidulant - "Hauz Trax" (5:47)
Voiron - "Bon Kick Voiron" (3:40)
Voiron - "Digital Voiron Workstation" (4:30)
Voiron - "Sugar Voiron" (4:31)
Review: Some six years after debuting via a deliciously angular and energetic EP from Jaquarius and Mono-Enzyme 307, the Acid Avengers imprint notches up release number 20. Like most of the label's EPs, it's a multi-artist affair. Sometime Balkan Vinyl and Bass Assault artist Acidulant handles side A, bouncing between rushing, piano-sporting 1992 hardcore revivalism ('Super Rave'), sub-heavy deep electro haziness ('Save The Last Rave') and throbbing, arpeggio driven trance/breakbeat techno fusion ('Hauz Trax'). Voiron, who last graced the label back in 2016, takes over on the flip. The Paris-based producer first fuses glistening, spacey melodies, twisted acid lines, post-electro beats and dirty bass on 'Bon Kick Voiron', before opting for deep acid house on 'Digital Voiron Workstation' and atmospheric, Orbital-meets-'90s tech-house on 'Sugar Voiron'.

SDB & B2 - "Reunite" (5:00)
Specific Objects - "Sneaky Business" (5:42)
Versus - "Those Things" (6:01)
Nano Rinnegato - "Ghetto K" (5:51)
Review: A label's first release is always a big one which hints at what to expect in the long term and for that reason Introspective debuts with this new five track compilation. They say that "Instinctive Senses is a compilation focusing on precise and cutting sonorities." We say it is a fresh techno offering with plenty of interesting details. Grafin drops 'Vespers' which is tightly looped and quick as hell then SDB & B2 get more dark, heavy and gritty on the twisted 'Reunite.' The flip side kick off with more rough and ready hard edged techno from Specific Objects, sleek tribal loops from Versus on 'Those Things' and Nano Rinnegato gets paranoid and revs up the sirens on 'Ghetto K.'

Music Takes You (7:11)
Silk (7:12)
Review: Unbelievably, Drumcode Records celebrates its 25th year in business in 2021. Adam Beyer's popular imprint has already delivered a swathe of must-check releases this year, and this collaborative outing from Pig & Dan and Victor Ruiz is another that label fans would do well to take note of. A-side 'Consciousness' is particularly potent, with the trio adding gnarly, mind-melting, dark room-ready riffs to a throbbing, trance-inducing techno groove. If tech-trance/neo-trance isn't your thing, turn to the flip. They're you'll find the moody and stomping big room techno of 'Music Takes You' - all doom-laden stabs and kick-drum driven heaviness - and the more melodious, colourful and rushing peak-time bliss of 'Silk', whose lengthy breakdowns are likely to send shivers down the spines of suitably refreshed dancers.

Re:Axis & Scalameriya - "Spectra" (5:57)
Review: Portuguese techno powerhouse Re:Axis has been working with Planet Rhythm for over eight years now, presenting a dynamic big room sound across a steady stream of EPs. Now he heads up a new VA 12" with 'Protoportal', a sinewy, seductive workout for those darker corners of the dance which originally came out in 2015 alongside tracks by Petter B. Petter B himself then steps up to rework 'Protoportal', twisting it into a thrumming, heads down weapon with an industrial tinge. VSK's 'Wrap' opens up the B side in a masterful display of contemporary Italian techno before the record rounds out with a collab from Scalameriya and Re:Axis, the knotty, dramatic 'Spectra'.

Review: Panta Rhei is many things - the concept of 'everything flows' in the philosophy of Heraclitus, a rock band from Hungary and now also a new Parisian techno label that makes its bow with a various artists' EP. There is plenty of analogue jack to the groove foundations of Prince De Takicardie's hurried 'Ammoniak', then Baptiste brings some depraved acid lines to his mind-melting cut 'Space'. On the flip you will find more prickly acid lines, stark drum textures and future techno sounds from Idris Bena, Zapp-ared and Djamal Nait.

It's the world of dubby technician Stelios Vassiloudis and opens with 'Laureles', a menace and broken beat cut with a dark soul. 'Include Unistd' brings a more unsettling mix of clanging industrial sounds to an underwater world and as if by magic it is Conforce who remixes have ing put out a vast wealth of sounds that explore similar sonic territory. He brings a little extra drive and dynamism to his version.

Mystic Voices (8:22)
Butoh (8:00)
Review: Midway through 2021, Sven Vath delivered his first single in well over five years, the squelchy, warming and melodious goodness of 'Feiern'. Here he begins 2022 in style via a two-track missive that's every bit as rushing whilst opting for a more abrasive, angular and foreboding sound. 'Mystic Voices' is particularly potent, with its combination of panicked TB-303 acid motifs, throbbing electronics and emotive chords recalling the majesty of Orbital circa the Brown Album. Flipside 'Butoh', meanwhile, is a much more hushed affair, with long, atmospheric ambient build ups dropping into dark techno grooves, pots and pans percussions and more high-register, Orbital style electronic flourishes.

Review: Pomelo is one of the longest serving pillars of the ever inventive Austrian techno/electronica community and the fact It's never had the profile of a Cheap or Mego doesn't mean it's not responsible for some of the country's most exciting and most maverick material. Austria's trademarks are a general and laudable ignorance of current fads, an irresistible groove-ability and an indefinable flair in executing their ideas and the four cuts have all three of those properties in heaps. The newest addition to the Pomelo roster is Spanish talent Vedelius, who delivers the late night burner 'The Crypt' here before turning it over for a rolling breakbeat version by Phosphene, jacking techno by Lodig/Dibek and a dubbed out electro-techno stepper by Lok44.

Review: Jersey City-based Jorge Velez has long been one of the US underground's most revered figures to those in the know. Largely predating the current fascination with lo-fi analogue productions, something shown on the excellent MMT Tape Series compilation which delved into his early archives, his work as Professor Genuis on Italians Do It Better and Thisisnotanexit was followed by the conceptual Hassan LP on L.I.E.S. which provided a soundtrack to an imaginary film based on a shadowy Middle Eastern cult formed in the 11th century. Here Velez return to Ron Morelli's stable with Territories, a six-track LP that passes through "menacing drones to EBM influenced floor tracks to Sakamoto-esque melodic experiments," with a "distinct atmosphere suitable for home listening or adventurous club play." Even for those who are familiar with the odd structures Velez creates with his hardware, this is a wild trip worthy of much closer inspection.

Review: Cedric Vermue's Perpetua album from this time last year explored neo-classical and ambient with a mix of piano, organ, synthesizer, electronics, woodwinds, horn and even a female choir. Now one of its most standout cuts gets reworked into a more club-ready sound by master sonic craftsmen. Italian deep techno son Donato Dozzy goes first and brings his signature smoothness, supple rhythms and bubbly drum and bass combos for a delightfully heady trip. Then comes a Grand River rework, also of 'Patterns', that is more tense and textural with fizzing drones marbling the rising synth work and suggestive minimal rhythm.

After one in 2020, now it is back once again with some stunning new material from label head Dan Arthure which again has us swimming in deep house, acid, downtempo, dub and techno waters. Review: 2023 marks a decade since Bas Mooy launched Mord, an outlet for forthright, heavyweight techno of the type that's now all the rage but was once frowned on but all but those who followed the style. We'll have to wait and see what they have - if anything - in store in way of celebration, but first Mooy has decided to offer up this collaborative EP from Dynamic Reflection regulars Viels and Pyramidal Decode. They begin with the dark, buzzing, atmospheric intensity of the Donatto Dozzy-esqye 'Privazione Individuale', before opting to pepper a more minimalistic techno groove with leaping modular pulses on 'Sintesi'. 'Entropia Variable' is a dense, locked-in chunk of noise-smothered industrial techno, while 'Moto Ondulatorio' is a surging slab of peak-time energy peppered with mind-mangling modular motifs and razor-sharp electronic riffs.

On the A side of this one, you have the emotive and contemplative deepness of 'Julius Cease ' and its utterly hypnotic melody playing centre stage. Track 2 (6:31)
Review: Levon Vincent continues to serve up high-grade techno workouts on his own Novel Sound imprint, with releases appearing with little or no fanfare or fuss. Concrete Jungle, his latest two-tracker, is deliciously raw, fuzzy, weighty and sleazy, with Vincent's choise of sounds and arrangements conjuring mental images of late-night walks through high-rise housing projects. A-side 'Track 1' sees him build up a dense, sub-heavy, cymbal-rich techno groove featuring subtle nods to British bleep techno, onto which he then adds shimmering, life-affirming pads. 'Track 2' flips the script a little, with Vincent wrapping a dubby techno groove in metallic motifs, concrete-clad electronics and spaced-out effects. He rarely pits a foot wrong, but even by Vincent's high standards both tracks are excellent.

Review: Levon Vincent's particular brand of techno is so percussive, club-ready and mind-altering that very few realise how sonically experimental it is. In a bid to make us more aware of this, the information sent to shops and press about 'Niresa', his latest single, features the popular producer discussing his love of creating a 'unique tonal dialog'. He also frames the two-track missive as 'music for astral planing' [sic]. The untitled A-side is certainly intergalactic, with sparkling, deep space melodies weaving in and out of a crunchy, drum machine-driven techno rhythm. Over on the flip, he goes further, offering a more pared-back beat, insatiably exotic and hallucinatory electronic motifs, bubbly synth stabs and waves of psychedelic synth sounds. It's utterly brilliant and beguiling, but we'd expect little less from the NYC-based producer.

Review: Wherein Dutchman Vincent lays down a heartfelt study of the soul entitled 'Pre Melancholy'. His findings are as follows... Before the melancholy one can expect a wave of emotions and pressures, all of them ingredients for a tumultuous storm that flies in a whole flurry of directions. Technoid drum & bass causing anxiety with every rolling fill ('Mono No Aware'), timeless breaks triggering moments of unsolicited joy ('Agent Of Distraction') and spacious leftfield that's so disarming and abyssal that it comes in two forms ('Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F'). Review: If you ever wondered where the line between techno and hard dance lies these days, let Viper Diva be your guide. The collaborative project from Shlomo and Hadone is a boisterous barrel of fist-pumping fun with plenty of hard trance motifs filtered through that evil techno veneer. As 'Broken Dreams Club' explicitly "welcomes you to the gates of hell", you might well be reminded of the sound you'd as likely hear at an early 00s Tidy Weekender, but that's absolutely fine with us. '24/7 You' has a slightly more melodic tint, although still shot through with certain gothic malaise, while 'Love & Riot' brings some poppy vocal slithers into the mix to up the emotional factor without dialling back the punishing rhythm section.

'Carpet Crawler' is a great name for a track that is all about bendy bass and warped, low lying synth lines that creep like snakes thorough the undergrowth. 'Luficer' then has a more hiccupping deep tech rhythm that is embellished with spooky and watery sound effects. 'Saffron' is another mind melting trip through bendy techno brilliance and last of all, 'Take My Hand' slows things down and strips things back to more expert atmospherics.

Their eleventh release is by hometown hero Craig McWhinney aka Vohkinne, who presents three excursions into the more hypnotic fringes of techno on the Set Theory EP. 'Infinite Space' is a tunnelling and mental strain of the genre which will appeal to fans of Mike Parker or Ness, receiving a pummelling rework by Berlin's Denise Rabe up next who takes the track into deep space territory. Review: Hospital Productions is a non-stop operation and following this year's long-players from Alessandro Cortini, Ninos Du Brasil and Ron Morelli, Vatican Shadow's latest swoop is this ambient album produced with Function. The seven-track LP was recorded between Berlin and New York, and it's described as best suited for after-hours home listening, but whether you really want to listen to this after a big night is up to you. Indeed "A Year Has Passed" and "A Year Has Gone By" are downbeat and melancholic, whereas other tracks lean more towards industrial ambient, similar to fellow Hospital artist Lussuria's work. "The Nemesis Flower" is a darker highlight while "Red Opium" and "Bejewelled Body" is where the house and techno beats lie.

Review: Italian techno heavyweight Giorgio Gigli has been at the forefront of his country's scene for some time now, working with Dozzy way back in 2004 and releasing an album on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label in 2015. This release on Planet Rhythm gathers together a series of collaborative EPs Gigli recorded for the label between 2015 and 2018, working with tough techno operators Ness, Paul Ritch and VSK. Gathered together in one handy triple-vinyl package, this is an essential set for anyone who cherishes dark, driving techno loaded with steely atmospheres and next-level production.

Review: Second time around for Jean-Michel Jarre's 2022 album Oxymore, a loving tribute to French composer and 'music concrete' pioneer Pierre Henry. As the title suggests, this version features new remixes of album tracks (all of which feature sounds originally created by Henry) by a disparate group of musical talents. That makes for an interesting mix of interpretations, with armin Van Buuren's sizable trance translation of 'Epica' rubbing shoulders with a trippy, off-kilter electro take on 'Sex In The Machine' by Nina Kraviz, a moody Martin Gore interpretation of 'Brutalism', Irene Dresel's raw techno revision of 'Zeitgeist Botanica', and ambient pioneer Brian Eno putting his spin on 'Epica'.

Review: He might be in the autumn of his career but Jean Michel Jarre remains an innovator in the field of electronic music. His last album in 2022, Oxymore, was another pioneering exploration of rhythm and sound that has now been reworked alongside a series of collaborators all picked by the man himself. The nine-track selection brings wholly new perspectives to the originals which he calls "a vibrant collection of musical dialogues." An immediate standout for us is the track with Nina Kraviz which is crunchy, distorted minimal techno, while 'Epica Extension' with Brian Eno is laced up with otherworldly melodies. A great work from a mix of great artists.

Review: RECOMMENDED
The DJ Kicks series has managed to outlast the vast majority of other DJ mixes we can think of - the good, the bad, the populist, and the plain cash cow. Even the mighty fabric compilations have rebranded and rethought, bringing the original legacy, FABRICLIVE included, to a respectful end at 200 outings. Strange, then, to think, that !K7's mighty offering to the world of "What should we listen to at the afters?" has arguably managed to become more relevant as the years have flown by.

There was a time when the series existed at the lighter end of club fare, with some examples barely even matching that description. These days, though, there's often a dance floor heaviness central to the selections, with Jessy Lanza's broken, bass-driven set a case in point. Pointless attempts to describe the music, and lazy track list namedropping aside, this is energy-packed, heads down, futurist stuff packed with infectious percussion.

Review: Intense, rave-fired big room techno is all the rage these days, and Amelie Lens is the undisputed Queen of the sound. It makes perfect sense then that Global Underground has got her to deliver the latest volume in their long-running mix series. It's named in honour of the Belgian's home city of Antwerp and, as you'd expect, it's an exemplary two-disc romp that perfectly captures the sound and style of Lens' club sets. She eases us in gently (by her standards, at least) on disc one, which features more melodic excursions from the likes of ARMA, AIROD, Luca Eck and Farrago. Both the tempo and intensity markedly increase on disc two, where Lens opts for a full throttle sprint through heavy techno slammers from herself, SWART, Lars Huismann, Elise Massoni, Max Rossi and many more. Brutal and brilliant in equal measure.

Review: Overmono is a real techno-making machine that rarely makes a misstep. He's landed on Poly Kicks and XL already this year and now his entry into the long-running and legendary fabric series is another doozy. Here we have the double 12" selection featuring key tracks from it such as his own 'If U Ever' and a fantastic cut 'I Have A Dream' (feat Benjamin Zephaniah) for an LB Dub Corp album of a few years ago. Blawan's typically supersized 'Fourth Dimensional' is another big moment in an album that is jam-packed with them.

LUZoSCURA (which means light and dark) is the new compilation that has resulted having evolved from the playlist of the same name. It's packed with new music from the man himself as well as newer names and more established artists. There are floaty, synth heavy ambient pieces like the 'Yin/Yang' opener, lush melodic electronic grooves from QRTR, symphonic garage cuts from MJ Cole and crunchy old breakbeats with more than a hint of Renaissance from Because Of Art.

Be it bowel emptying rave as Special Request, festival baiting piano house tunes or chart topping pop dance crossovers under his own name, the man is proving himself to have a real golden touch. He sure does crank out all these tunes at a prolific rate, too, but you still feel he does everything with meticulous precision. This DJ Kicks is a case in point. It touches on all the many different facets of his sound from glossy and feel good house to early Chicago classics, post-rave dreamscapes to brutal jungle breaks. What a legend.

Review: Global Underground is one of the longest-running DJ mix series and it has always been one of the best. Plenty of big-names over the years have made their mark, often more than once, and now it is the turn of the famously long-playing New York titan Danny Tenaglia to show us what he's made of. He brings his signature grooves and a hint of Latin flavour to proceedings on this, a third and final installment of his trilogy for the series. It is mostly contemporary names serving up new school sounds but all delivered with Danny's cultured and old school DJ mentality.

Review: Troekurovo Recordings is a production team made up of Toki Fuko, Vadim Basov and Evgeny Vorontsov and they have been hidden away deep in some enchanted Russian forests recording music. Now they are putting out the results on this superb double pack. This project started back in 2016 as a live experimental jam and is now an annual tradition made on loads of analogue gear on the banks of a canyon that was formed many years ago by a melting glacier. The locale provides inspiration - from the fresh country air to the meteor showers often visible overhead - for the music making which is strictly "no preparation, no pre-programming - hardware, friends and live improvisation only."

Review: This quadruple-vinyl extravaganza gathers together parts 30 to 33 in Rotterdam imprint Mord's Herdersmat series, which has been offering up intense, lo-fi and mind-bending takes on industrial techno since 2015. From track one - a buzzing and stomping effort from SHXCXCHCXSH - it's full-throttle almost all the way, with the compilation's warehouse-ready highlights including Temudo & Ribe's wonky, pitch-black 'Rite', the panicked, paranoid intensity of Razbibriga's 'Cicada', the arpeggio-driven mind-melt of Kaiser's 'And Yet Again', and the almost unfeasibly lo-fi fusion of Isolee-esque electronic motifs and distorted drums that is 'Confusion' by Anthony Doria. No-holds-barred industrial techno for those who seek darkness rather than light.

Review: Mama Told Ya is French DJ & producer Anetha's own record label, where for its fifth release she presents the creme de la creme of global talent. Indeed, L'eau Repousse Les Feux Agressifs covers the many shades of contemporary techno: from austere and strobe-lit warehouse bangers like that of label staple UFO95's 'Naturbath' or MDR alumnus Ryan James Ford's 'Snake Bitter' (1999 mix). X-Coast and Isabella channel the early '90s heyday of rave, on the breaks-driven energy of 'Mutation' and 'Impresia' respectively. Elsewhere, the more experimental fringes of the genre are covered as well, courtesy of Varg2TM who collaborates with Posh Isolation's Croation Amor on the sonic contortions of 'Bully', while EMMA DJ veers off into hyperware territory on 'Extremely Urgent'.

Review: Anyone looking to bolster the freakier end of their techno collection could do worse than checking out this bumper compilation from Advance Public Listening. It is a mighty four vinyl box set with tens of tracks across eight sides of heavyweight vinyl (that makes the whole thing weigh in at not that for off a kilo of wax.) There are also wonky peak time workouts and plenty in between from a classy selection of artist from all over the world.

Review: DJ soFa continues his Elsewhere compilation series on Kalahari Oyster Cult with a superb sixth instalment that showcases a load of exciting and hybrid electronic styles. These are tunes that are ripe for club play but are rooted in odd-pop, synth-punk, DIY and post-kraut styles. The artists hail from all over the globe and include the twisted funk of Seytan Tuyu's 'Anita,' hall of melodic mirrors that is Cilin's 'An Abhainn Mhor' and Mytron & A Von F's soot-black and gritty motorik thriller 'Confiture.' This series has been going since 2017 and this proves, it is still as strong as ever.
