Count On It
Reprise (Noha Reprize edit)
Count On It (Noha Count On Me remix)
Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Torc (ERP version)
Review: Synchrophone proudly present the latest Gerard Hanson aka. Convextion release; a head-turner moment, since the last proper EP by the 2845 artist was over seven years ago, with Vectorvision for the EP 'Zy Clone'. Since then, Convextion has been hard at work, eschewing all concavities for a purely thermal, fluid sonic exercise. 'Torc' and 'Andas' are unsettling, looming techno visions, confecting a hypothetical world in which the hard sciences have taken total precedent over the human, resulting in a rapid dissipation of heat. The only energy that remains is that which is fed through the machine, as further evidenced on the sinister murk-movements on ERP's version, its two-tone Reese stab suggesting utter indefatigability when begged for mercy.

Heike (Mood mix)
Review: Ricardo Villalobos wasn't always the cult figure he is today. At the start of his career he was an underground producer still finding his feet and fomenting his own sound. It was in the first decade of his career that he cooked up this tune and had what is about as close as he will ever get to a techno anthem. 'Heike' rides on big drums with detuned synth lines layered up next to female vocal coos, pixelated synth modulations and prying bass. Its a mental workout as much as a physical one and still bags today, which his why it gets this reissue on Rawax alongside the Mood Mix on the flip which is more dubby and dialled back into to deeper beats.

Review: When this superb double-pack was first released in 1996, Bandulu had already spent four years finely tuning their trademark sound - decidedly spacey and subtly percussive take on techno that offered nods aplenty to Motor City minimalism and the dub-fired end of the Berlin techno spectrum. As a result, the eight-track set became the North London trio's standout release - an album in all but name that remains the purest and most finely crafted expression of their distinctive take on techno. Now reissued on vinyl for the first time since (and in remastered form to boot), its many highlights including the pounding deep space techno of 'Serial Operations', the dub techno masterclass 'Episode 7', the Regis-esque hedonism of 'Paranormal Channels' and the restless, delay-laden riffs of 'Advirus'.

Review: On Synchrophone Records comes Conforce for with second edition in the Commuting series, bringing stygian control room techno to already chapped ears. Sometimes, to feel good on the floor, warmth isn't what you need; and these further four fan-greasers are perfect complements for said latter kind of mood, the cold and unattached unjamming of inner vibes. With coolly bureaucratic track titles like 'Recuperation' , 'Self Assessment' and 'Stable Velocity', Conforce's series has succeeded in portraying the secret joys of humanity's greyer modern face; the tracks here of course continue to fit us in sleek uniform, now deploying such neo-futuristic cyphered titles as 'SCC-ML' and 'RTM-Zuid', the meanings of whose acronyms you'll just have to deduce from the zapping, emissive sound design yourself.

Fabric Presents Laurent Garnier
Cat: FABRIC 223. Rel: 24 Jan 25
Review: In alignment with London clubbing institution Fabric's 25th year, the huge figural techno head Laurent Garnier joins on for the former's Fabric Presents mix series, which selects artists to record different stylistic kinds of DJ mixes - separate to the longtime, peaktime, and often drum & bass-oriented Fabriclive series. Among the shortlist of artists drawn up, Garnier's name stuck out like a sore thumb, not least since those who are inevitably chosen had to have risen to fame in roughly the same timeframe as the Farringdon nightclub did. Fabric make the following promise: Laurent's mix, released here in the form of a deluxe CD compendium, will not only pay homage to the club, but also showcase his own mastery of genres and the diversity of his genius. The release will drop physical-only as a deluxe vinyl collectable and on CD and it'll also feature a new original four-track EP from Laurent.

Review: Millsart is an alias of Jeff Mills which the Detroit tech pioneer and cosmic ambient maestro uses to explore some of his most melodic sounds. 'Theme From Star Child' is a lush soundscape with rich piano chords and glowing synths all over a mid-tempo beat that is perfectly inviting. 'Satori' is more percussive with loopy drums and scintillating hi-hats dancing over the beats. 'Love Warrior' is a broken beat trip with orchestral melodies and sustained chords that all glow like distant stars. Last but not least is the jazz-dancer 'Starlight Trance Dancer' with its rippling keys bringing future soul to the supple rhythms.

Review: Ron & Roland was a mid-90s collaboration between Matt Hodgson (7th Voyage) and Laurant Webb (Housey Doingz) and at their peak they made some untouchable records that perfectly straddled the house and techno divide. This new reissue on Pariter is one of them and it features a trio of cuts laced with visceral acid energy. 'Nassaur Bassed Party' kicks off with crispy drums and snares that cut through the rich bass. 'Acidless Party' gets wilder with extra 303 energy and 'Track Ball Treck' balances dynamic drive with sonic detail for a dubby, elastic groove that was initially recorded at Swag Studios Croydon in 1996 and, with these other cuts, was initially released on Surreal. It's been a cult favourite ever since and still sounds magnificent.

Mike Clark & Marcus Harris get things underway with 'Hey' which has a subtly uplifting feel thanks to the bright, sustained chords and cuddly drums. Santonio Echols's 'Piano In The Light' (DJ Emanuell Echols mix) is laidback, playful deep house with magical chord work and Brian Kage brings his classy depths to the smooth grooves of 'This Saturday Night.' The first release revives Connective Zone's Palm Palm, a millennium-era cult classic and Ben UFO favourite that first came out on Mark Broom and Dave Hill's Unexplored Beats in 2001. They are also mad consistent both in style and quality which means they never age. Here he steps up to Lempuyang with his Blue Channel alias alongside Jonas Schachner aka Another Channel for more silky smooth fusions of authentic dub culture and Maurizo-style techno deepness. Watery synths, hissing hi-hats with long trails and dub musings all colour these dynamic grooves. They're cavernous and immersive and frankly irresistible and the sort of tracks that need to be played loud in a dark space. In that context, you'll never want them to end.

Review: Stephen Brown is a Scottish producer known for his deep, Detroit-influenced techno. Active since the 1990s, he's released music on labels like Transmat, Skudge, and Subject Detroit. His productions blend melodic elements with rhythmic precision, a sound he's been honing and tinkering with for nearly 30 years. The 'Variations' EP on Syncrophone is a prototypical example of his sound. Each track is underpinned by a blend of skipping upbeat house rhythms with classic Detroit pads. The first track 'Compare' even adds some weird percussive sounds in the background and an ambiguous vocal sample that could be a child, or the nearby rapturous chants of a pigeon surely appreciating the groove as much as we are. The second track 'CZ3' is a raw groover with overdriven kicks and dry synth hits. One for the 'Djax-Up-Beats' heads! Track three 'Replika' is our choice cut, with a synth lead that sounds straight from dub techno but with more groove than the majority of tunes that you'll find in that genre. The final track 'The 5' has the biggest kick drum of the release which is sure to tear down any club floor is played at the right moment. An EP for the heads and the dancers.

Review: Dan Piu and Grant's Theory of Movement project has served up gold for lovers of heady tech and minimal. After something of a hiatus, it is now back on When The Morning Comes with more of the sort of tuneage that is going to quickly sell out and soon become the ID request du jour at your favourite underground parties. These are of course sophisticated sounds from the silky house bumps of 'Now & Then' with its seductive vocal allure to the throwback 90s sounds of 'Over Time' (Acid Mix). 'Basis' (Foundation mix) is another immediately classic house sound with analogue and dusty drums and zippy melodies next to more smooth chords. 'Motion Of Objects' shuts down with a more zoned-out vibe and widescreen melodic architecture for late nights.

Review: New York-based minimal electronica artist Brendon Moeller takes cues from drum & bass and lowercase on his latest record for ESP Institute. Like a sonic Hockney painting, just six generous tracks span a curtly two sides on 12", as classy deluges marry with designer percs, conspiring to make a large but radially controlled splash. Every experiential stylistic base Moeller has passed so far, such as IDM or ambient dub, is revisited and checked off, and combined to form a wet emulsion here. 'Vibrations', the highlight of ours, pays special attention to fricative, stimulant audio-exploits in the sound design, with its synthetic mid-claves and potent rubber basses sounding like the reflex responses it predicts and expects from us. No wonder ESP liken the entire record to one big tingling sensation.

Review: Underground Resistance alumni Scan 7 spew forth four rather glommy, malleable techno goos. 'Addicted' and 'Light Seekers' are delightfully simple yet well twinned tracks, charming up the A-side; the former track builds on class-ick acid formulae of cliffhanging repetitions and languorously delivered narrations - of course reminiscent of Phuture's 'Acid Tracks' - and the latter's core, convected "womp" hears things move into increasingly plasmic vats. Driblet triplets ensue on 'Born Out Of Darkness', while 'Code 7' veers meta and self-referential, deploying ringtone tings and what sound like social media notification sound effects. Eerie and muted, just how the founding fathers of techno did it right.

'Stygious Night' follows, offering crisp subterranean techno with an edge that feels both modern and timeless. Review: Pumping new Syncrophone remixes from producer Rolando, who helps the label celebrate its 60th outing with a fresh crock of remixes of star releases from its back catalogue. Including versions of Derrick Thompson, Zadig and Malvito, this collection brings a powerful Detroit-inspired sound to a cutting-edge modern feel, not getting too bogged down in tradition and yet keeping quite true to the raw and unvarnished finish incipient of the early motorised sound. Best here has to be the B2, which heads in a broken direction, splitting rhythmic hairs with auto-somatic woodblock strikes and deep pads.

Review: Essential minimal techno reissue from the late, great Finnish electronic musician and producer, Mika Vainio. Originally released in 1994 under the unassuming O moniker, 'Metri' was way ahead of its time and continues to sound as vital as ever more than 30 years after it was composed. The album first appeared on Sahko Records, and its reincarnation arrives on the very same imprint. Echoing long Nordic winters, the sparse but powerfully immersive collection effortlessly ebbs and flows, meandering through spaced-out textures, darting into paranoid acid topography, and submerging into the depths of abstract noise. Best enjoyed from start to finish, there are, nonetheless, plenty of highlights to savour. The frantic four-to-the-floor of 'Muuntaja', the haunting bells of 'Kuvio', the relentless acid dirt of 'Hornitus', or the shimmering pitched rhythms of 'Hion'. Nothing short of seminal.

'Magenta' follows, delivering a hazy dub experience that channels island vibes, with deep, gentle chords that immerse the listener. Review: This 30th anniversary reissue celebrates a groundbreaking electronic release that continues to stand as a benchmark for minimal techno. Originally released in the early 90s, the album introduced a stripped-back sound that pushed the boundaries of the genre, focusing on elemental rhythms and sparse, hypnotic structures. The music is deliberately repetitive, drawing listeners into a digital wormhole where subtle variations in looping basslines and synthetic polyrhythms create a mesmerising, almost alien atmosphere. Tracks like 'Home' laid the groundwork for ambient techno movements, with their intricate yet minimalistic percussion and atmospheric sound design. Despite the minimalism, the album is packed with sonic depth, offering everything from digital chirps to crunchy metallic percussion, creating a sense of space that allows each element to breathe. The reissue's sharper sonic clarity enhances the album's subtle density, making it even more immersive. This release not only codified a new era of techno but also remains a timeless, hypnotic gem. Its influence is still felt today, proving that even the simplest sounds can create profound, futuristic music.

Review: A captivating exploration of Finland's underground electro scene from the late 90s to the early 00s, showcasing 12 rare and previously unreleased tracks. It unveils a fiercely DIY-driven movement that blossomed far from Europe's electronic centers with its raw, innovative energy that has since been overlooked. The collection opens with two tracks from the early 90s, including B-Rock and the collaboration between Mika Vainio and Jaakko Salovaara, setting the tone for the album's eclectic journey. Highlights include the unreleased early work of Mr. Velcro Fastener, brimming with robotic charm, and dark electro cuts from Decepticons and Dr. Robotnik, whose minimal wave influences stand out. Another gem is the extended track by Jori Hulkkonen, originally a promo-only release, alongside Markus & Kristian's cult-classic take on Kraftwerk's 'The Model'. Industrial beats from Feng Shui feat. Monsieur and gritty bass-driven anthems from Imatran Voima pay tribute to the era's diverse sounds. The compilation also delves into Finland's demoscene roots with primitive synth explorations from Spektor and Tero that revel in the early days of digital hardware. Liner notes from curator Erkko Lehtinen and artwork by Ed Cheverton complete the package, preserving the raw underground energy of a vital moment in electronic music.

Side-1 opens with 'Destruction Industries', a heavy, dramatic track that pulses with acid electro, creating an intense, alien vibe. 'My Vision Of Space' follows with a futuristic, Carl Finlow-esque feel, offering a sleek, forward-thinking electro sound. The Belaria Remix of the track slows things down, providing a lower BPM version that retains the original's spacey atmosphere but with a more subdued, deeper groove. Side-2 shifts gears with 'Ammoniax', diving into otherworldly techno with a hypnotic, immersive quality and 'We Come For Acid', a darker, trancey track that builds tension with heady, layered acid sounds, perfect for late-night listening. Overall, this release offers a varied, yet cohesive mix of high-energy electro and atmospheric techno.

Resolve
Review: JS Zeiter returns with another masterclass in dub techno, proving why he has remained a staple in the genre for nearly three decades. The first track, Momentum, delivers the atmospheric, deep dub techno that has long defined Zeiter's sound, with swirling textures and a hypnotic groove that pulls you into its immersive world. On the second side, Exodus takes a more melodic turn, layering emotive synths over a deep techno foundation, creating a track that feels both expansive and introspective. Closing the release is Resolve, a more reserved offering, moody and subtle in its approach. While understated, it serves as a subliminal peak, building tension without overt intensity, showcasing Zeiter's ability to create depth with minimalism. This release is yet another testament to Zeiter's skill in crafting refined, atmospheric techno that remains both timeless and forward-thinking.

Turkish Bazar (Chris Liebing Remake)
Review: Emmanuel Top's 'Turkish Bazar' is a relentless historic bastion of hard acid. First released in 1994, this six-minute trail of gunpowder came with an ominous, poetic forewarning: "the music was new, black, polished chrome and came over the summer like liquid night." Allegedly sampled from a spoken word B-side written by Doors founding member Jim Morrison, lending the record a timeless edge. Only natural, then, that it should see a remake from next-gen techno torch-carrier Chris Liebing, whose mega-production adds extra cladding and armour plating to an already monumental mix, though it refuses nevertheless to let up on the track's unfiltered 303 and matchingly unabashed feel.

Review: DBH welcome Mihai Popoviciu & David Delgado the the Pleasure Zone series with the 'Evolution' EP. Bringing jazzy, sloshy, jerking flavours to the tech house palette, 'Evolution' and 'Shifting' evolve and shift, convoking a delegated moot of propulsive chords and forward-driving janks, conveying the mood of a finely tuned closed clockwork system chugging away like the central engine of a wider contraption. Closer 'Black Light' operates more readily in the lower regions of things, proving unafraid of sounds that lean towards the more peripheral and umbral.

Review: Melbourne-based artist Dan Goul takes flight with his debut release, showcasing his impressive command of techno's deeper shades. Released on Berg Audio, this collection is an immersive journey through ambient textures, experimental soundscapes, and weighty dancefloor rhythms. 'Currents' sets the tone with its hypnotic groove, while 'Low Tide' explores a more introspective soundscape. The title track, 'Paraglider', soars with its expansive melodies and driving percussion, and 'Peninsula' closes the release with a mesmerizing blend of ethereal textures and pulsating rhythms. Goul's deft touch is evident throughout, seamlessly weaving together intricate sound design, hypnotic grooves, and moments of pure sonic bliss. This is a testament to Goul's artistry, a captivating exploration of techno's diverse landscape that will appeal to both headphone listeners and dancefloor devotees.

Review: The exceptionally named Panty Soaker Sound System bursts onto the scene here with a powerful debut EP on their own self-titled label. 'Hormones' marks the inaugural outing and is a track that ignites the floor while exploring self-empowerment and inner desires. It has picked up early praise from Honey Dijon and is a full-throttle and steamy, erotic house sound that is sure to become a bit of a winter anthem. The EP includes three acid-infused original mixes, followed by the Prosumer HorMoans Remix which is a dark stomper with prickly 303 lines and a heavy groove. For those craving a harder vibe, the LUXE Dark Room Remix delivers a broken-beat reimagining with high-energy that takes you to new heights.
