  1. Esteban Adame - "Guaguanco"
  2. Esteban Adame - "Guaguanco" (Frequencia deconstruction)
  3. Santiago Salazar - "October 17"
  4. Santiago Salazar - "October 17" (dub mix)
Review: The latest release on DJ Bone's Subject Detroit label is a split 12" featuring Esteban Adame and Santiago Salazar. This is how they do techno, Californian style, and you can tell it from the off. The beats are tough as hell, but there's a sun-kissed vibrancy to the synth work that positively leaps out of the speakers and shakes your cerebellum. Adame leads on the A side with "Guaguanco", an effervescent stomper that takes a turn for the deep when Frequencia jumps on board for a remix. Salazar is in a housey frame of mind on "October 17", letting smooth pads lead the way without losing that all-important impact. The "Dub mix" of the track actually beefs things up with a grinding lead synth pitched at big room scenarios while maintaining a steady tempo.

  1. Generators (7:35)
  2. Minilogue (8:34)
  3. Frame (3:28)
Review: Wurzburg wonder Johannes Albert returns to Frank to cast more of his signature melodic techno spells. As always it's a vast spread; "Generators" is the initial full-pelt blast. A power lightning strike, causing your body to move involuntarily, it's Albert at his most active. "Minilogue" pays homage to Korg with a vibrant arpeggio and shimmering peaks while "Frame" closes on a beatless note; dense atmospheres that enshroud and mystify, it's Johannes at his most alluring. 1. Figure Of RA (7:08)
  2. The Acid Runner (6:38)
  3. Virgo's Echoes (6:27)
  4. Third Eye (7:24)
Review: Last year, Berlin-based Italian Ilario Alicanti pitched up on Drumcode for the very first time, following nine years spent building up his reputation via releases on some of European techno's best-loved labels. Figures & Echoes marks his return to the high profile Swedish imprint and begins with one of his most intense and energetic compositions yet: the throbbing, acid-fired, arpeggio-driven darkness of "Figure of RA". "The Acid Runner", a foreboding and panicked stomp through jacking acid house/big room techno follows, before fuzzy, ghostly and otherworldly motifs dance around a tribal techno groove on "Virgo's Echoes". A fine EP is completed via the creepy, sprinting-away-from-a-mugger-at-4am techno thump of "Third Eye".

  1. BFTT - "Public/Private"
  2. Lack - "Absent"
  3. Chekov - "Celeste"
  4. Howes - "Untitled"
Review: Cong Burn made a mighty splash with its first release, clearly flaunting the kind of wares you'd expect to hear from Livity Sound alumni or other such esteemed techno renegades. The second installment is no slouch either, featuring a new cast of crooked creators offering up their wares for the modern mutant dancefloor. BFTT has a weighty low end thrum powering "Public/Private", while Lack takes things in a scuffed and nimble direction. Chekov pushes out into more experimental pastures with the broken beats and displaced sound design of "Celeste" and Howes creates a wonderful strain of mystical deep house for darkened souls. Each one of these tracks is loaded with flair and personality, yards ahead of your average generic knock offs and presenting something with real merit to the convoluted world of dance music.

  3. The Willers Brothers - "Goes On & On" (7:11)
  4. The Willers Brothers - "Don't Slip" (7:01)
Review: Since the We_r House label appears to be jointly run by Berliners the Willers Brothers and Cinthie, it seems fitting that both artists make telling contributions to the imrpint's second 12". Cinthie handles side A, serving up both the early Morning Detroit techno hypnotism of "Control" and the chunky and tactile, U.S style deep house bump of "Palm Trees in Wedding". The Willers Brothers' "Goes On and On" offers a return to the locked-in dancefloor hypnotism that marks out Cinthie's EP opener, albeit with a few more dreamy melodic elements to entice the deep house heads, before those tuneful, warm and atmospheric vibes are further explored on the skipping New Jersey vibes of closer "Don't Slip".

  3. In Pursuit (Cop Envy remix) (5:15)
  4. In Pursuit (Leo James Greyscale mix) (5:19)
Review: Melbourne based retroverts Dormir present two great tracks, that merge classic synth pop sensibilities with electro influences on the sweltering "In Pursuit" while the sensual and darkly romantic "Rendezvous" allows the singer's performance to shine through - sounding quite like Robert Smith. On the flip, there's some top remixes by some of Sydney's hottest producers - Cop Envy (Templar Sound) delivers a seething electro bass perspective reminiscent of Dynamic II, while Leo James (who some of you may remember as part of Canyon's on DFA a while back) remains respectful to the original of "In Pursuit" but provides a bit more dancefloor dynamic on his Greyscale mix.

  4. 2DS (6:02)
Review: Adam Feingold once again dons the Ex Terrestrial alias, this time for an outing on box fresh Canadian imprint NAFF. He's in a typically melodious and glassy-eyed mood on the A-side, where "Portal Living (Kali)" and "Portal Living (Plain)" provide two contrasting takes on the producer's warm and wavy interpretation of early Italian dream house. "Vanilight (Re-Zoned)" sounds like his tactile take on obscure bleep pioneers DJ Martin and DJ Homes' brilliant (but little-known) bass-heavy remixes of Man Machine's "Animal", while closer "2DS" is a kaleidoscopic slice of deep musical bliss that sits somewhere between original New Jersey deep house and the turn-of-the-'90s Soul II Soul sound.

  3. Ornithurae (6:11)
  4. Higher (feat Nk) (5:55)
Review: Dusky's 17 Steps are back with a heavy hitter courtesy of Sheffield's Liam O'Shea - he of Hope Works, 100 Years and Seaghdha fame. Unlike the funky tech house jams heard on his last effort for REKIDS, "Iterations" is the sort of heads down, strobe-lit and tunneling affair for clandestine warehouse raves. Swedish noise terror Peder Mannerfelt steps up to the challenge next and provides a typically frantic rave deconstruction. On the flip, you begin to remember that Lo Shea has quite a diverse repertoire within his arsenal, considering that "Ornithurae" - the kind of rolling minimal tech house with druggy elements popular on m-nus or Mindshake several years ago, while the euphotic hi-NRG/trance aesthetic of "Higher" (feat Nk) shows he's just as good at making old-school inspired grooves - the Sheffield veteran has been DJing for the better part of 20 years after all.

  1. Temples (7:35)
  2. Hyper Seconds (7:52)
Review: One of the joys of Lone's Ambivert Tools series has been the sheer rush-inducing cheeriness of the whole thing. Melodious, colourful, giddily positive and shot through with heaps of Sunrise-era rave nostalgia, each of the EPs has come packed with music that makes you want to dance with a goofy smile on your face. You'll be glad to hear that both tracks on volume three are likely to have the same effect. On side A you'll find "Temples", a mid-tempo, breakbeat-driven affair rich in swooning Motor City chords and spiraling, intergalactic electronic melodies. Flip for "Hyper Seconds", a fluttering 4/4 excursion that sounds like Orbital (circa the Brown Album or Snivilisation) jamming with Juan Atkins. Pure sonic bliss.

  1. Deep Sea Reminder (7:54)
  2. Lex 2001 (6:50)
  3. Optical Illusion (8:00)
  4. Frau Bowie (6:55)
Review: We had to double check that this was indeed the first time the mighty Luke Eargoggle had graced Jan Svensson's Borft label, such is their shared DIY ethos and heritage within Scandinavian electronics. But here we are with Train To Illusion, the Borft debut for Luke Eargoggle and a wonderful four track foray into the classic electro sound the Swede has become renowned for. "Deep Sea Reminder" is a delight that could easily snap on for a lot longer than its eight minute reminder, but the record doesn't stay on this hopeful note throughout. Indeed there is a ruff and ruggedness to "Optical Illusion" which will probably appeal to the Helena Hauff's of the world, whilst "Frau Bowie" could easily be mistaken for a Panzerkreuz b side.

  1. Mcoolaid
  2. Fuego
  3. Techmoreno
  4. Techmoreno (Alejandro Paz remix)
Review: Ricardo Medina has popped up intermittently through the years as a wielder of hefty deep house, and so it goes on this new 12" for Wonder Stories. Take snappily titled "Mcoolaid", where the synths ping out bright and bold while the acidic bass and slamming drums keep the pressure at a constant peak, or the dark and nasty throb of "Fuego". Medina means business, and he's unabashed in his aim towards the big room peak time tech house crowd. "Techmoreno" keeps up the intensity, which gives Alejandro Paz the necessary ingredients for an equally smoking remix for the crafty jackers out there on the floor.

Review: Having initially snuck his jams out in the early 90s as Memphis, Paul Williams has been around longer than most and his excursions into ambient music are definitely worthy of attention. As well as a 12" on Mirror Zone, this release marks 24 years since we last heard from Memphis and it's startling how relevant the sound is now. It's dated for sure, but only in the same way as much of the music you'll hear our favourite deep digging DJs reach for. There's a heady, trancey pulse to these productions, but without any naff strings or cheesy leads - this is proper trip-out box jam business from an unsung champion.

Review: UK don Luke Slater returns with the fourth instalment of Deep Heet. The last edition released in 2012 on his esteemed Mote Evolver imprint is recognised by those that know as some of the most reliable techno tools in recent years: who can forget the sinister hypnotism of "Flat Tire": what a classic! You can bet there's yet more austere and ergonomic tracks for serious DJ use on offer here. Starting off with the driving and cyclical grunt of "Desert Races", then the tunnelling and trance inducing bell melody of "Life Rhythm" representing the A side. On the flip, the full throttle intergalactic charge of Random Kingdom and the dystopian minimalism of "Lazer Organical" which would make even Mike Parker stand up and notice! Slater is still without doubt one of the most singular talents in techno, respect!

  3. Laccy - "Spectrum Of Vibrations"
  4. Laccy - "Coincidence Of Opposites"
Review: The fourth installment on Spinning Plates comes from Andy Rantzen and Laccy, featuring a wealth of off-beat techno adventures for wayward souls. Rantzen is an Australian producer with a history remixing the likes of Severed Heads and working alongside Paul Mac as Itch-E & Scratch-E. His lead track "Digital Elf" is a stripped a raw beats n' bleeps workout, while "The Dial" finds Mac chipping in as they rework the track into a deadly old-skool burner for lovers of bleep techno. Laccy has only had one prior outing to date, but sounds in strong form on the sleek and crafty "Spectrum Of Vibrations" and delightfully freaky "Coincidence Of Opposites".

Review: Central Processing Unit chief CP Smith is keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the shadowy producer(s) behind the Secret State project. Smith describes this debut EP as "an attempt to rise above the all-pervasive, vacuous, decaying culture." We'll let you judge whether the men or women of mystery have succeeded in that aim, but we certainly think it's a fine EP. By CPU standards, it's a rather eclectic affair, flitting between druggy, arpeggio-driven alien funk ("CIA UFO Google Search"), ghetto-tech influenced deep electro (the wonderful "De-Pattern"), sparkling dacenfloor electro positivity ("The Sleep Room") and glistening, bass-heavy techno/proto-house/deep house fusion (sublime closer "Weep For Joy").
