  2. Blood Moon (5:58)
  3. Home (5:18)
  4. Different Places (6:58)
  5. Orion Trance (7:07)
Review: Idris Bena & Paolo Mosca take care of one side each of this tasty new 12" on Opia. Their brand of techno is hugely funky, with a healthy reverie for the past but also a passion to take things forwards. Bena kicks off with 'Earth Delight' which is all happy melodic business and tight, kinetic drums. 'Blood Moon' again brings retro video game melodies to shimmering, well polished tech drums and 'Home' gets busier with the chords and layers up woodpecker hits and sheet metal snares. The b-side is no less intergalactic with 'Different Places' riding a nice buffed up neon bassline while synth modulations get freaky, and last of all 'Orion Trance' brings the subtle waves of euphoria with its trance chords and jacked beats.

  3. Floorwax (feat Foremost Poets - Cardopusher remix) (5:10)
  4. Floorwax (feat Foremost Poets - Hrdvsion remix) (5:05)
Review: Captain Mustache is a new energy in the club scene who surfaced with a bang last year and has since notched up releases on Bordello A Parigi, My Favourite Robot, Bedrock and Kompakt no less. Now he's stepping forth with his biggest belters to date on Return To Disorder, kicking off with the massive 'Danger' featuring certifiable legend Paris The Black Fu on vocal duties. 'Floorwax' is also packing some club scene clout into its electro fantasy, with the mighty Foremost Poets sneaking some spooky lyrics into the mix. On the flip, 'Floorwax' gets remixed by Cardopusher and Hrdvision, who respectively jack the track up and freak it right out, widening the scope of the record without leaving the seedy ambience Return To Disorder prefers to lurk in.

  1. Dysfunctional (6:28)
  2. Modern Utopia Thoughts (6:14)
  3. Libertarian On A Mission (5:41)
  4. The NATA Liaison (6:18)
Review: Following up the inaugural release by Braintalk, Zurich-based label Human Sense Technology returns for its second edition here, this time from hometown hero Dan Piu. He rebooted his career after a 16 year hiatus a few years ago and has been more prolific than ever, with releases on Childhood Electronix, Cartulis, and Hizou Deep Rooted Music. The Modern Utopia Thoughts EP is dedicated to his youth and influenced by future visions of creation, featuring early '90s UK techno sounds that are very much in fashion at the moment ('Dysfunctional / 'Libertarian On A Mission') deep subterranean 303 acid journeys Modern (the title track) and classic Chicago house tropes as heard on 'The NATA Liaison'.

  3. Vandal Eyes (5:23)
  4. Vandal Eyes (Luca Lozano'A Perfect Circle remix) (8:16)
Review: At this point we don't know who DJ Steve is. A few years ago, some masterful leftfield disco edits came on the Beats in Space label from an apparent Spanish butcher named DJ Steve, but we sense this is a different person entirely. Mainly because these are prop throwback acid tracks that transport you to a '90s dance floor in an instant. 'Azul Electrico 1' is all rugged bass undulations, cowbells and bleeping melodies. 'Secret Touch' layers in a classic vocal sample to add some soul to the glistening electronics then 'Vandal Eyes' offers a scruffy drum track overlaid with more bleeps and squeaks. Luca Lozano's A Perfect Circle remix is a chunky bit of cosmic tech funk to close down with.

  2. Vexed (5:44)
  3. Distant (5:04)
  4. Slam Deep (6:13)
  5. Channel & Transmission (2:00)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: For his first outing of 2020, Kyle Hall returns to the label he founded last year, Forget The Clock, with a suitably strong five-track missive. Check first languid opener "Shark", a splash around in crystal clear waters where simmering chords, luscious pads and glassy-eyed melodic motifs stretch out over bubbly, Latin-tinged drum machine beats and a dubby bassline. Hall makes bolder strides towards the dancefloor on lo-fi house cut "Vexed", before doffing a cap to Larry Heard and Ron Trent on the gorgeous deep house positivity of "Distant". Elsewhere, "Slam Deep" joins the dots between Steve Poindexter and the 2000 Black style of jazzy broken beat, while "Channel & Transmission" is a skewed skip through wonky deep house/jazz-funk fusion.

Review: Waterford native Leonid has been quiet of late but we're glad he's now back on the always excellent Lunar Disko label with a widescreen exploration of deep techno. 'Mind Control' is an absorbing piece of cinematic ambience, with slowly turning rhythms and lush ambient pad work. 'Dual Link' bristles on glistening analogue drums and thick, pixelated chords you almost feel you could grab in to. 'Thermodynamic' marks the high point with bulky, busted drums and undulating acid lines while tow further tracks get a little more heady ('Single Link') and fully cast themselves adrift into the cosmos ('The Long Stare.')

Lion's Drums Edits: Manos Tsangaris Drum
  1. Manos Tsangaris - "Drum 1" (Lion's Drums edit) (5:04)
  2. Manos Tsangaris - "Drum 2" (Lion's Drums edit) (5:20)
Review: Cocktail D'Amore know a thing or two about party starting wild cards, and thus far Lion's Drums has proven to be adept in that department with drops on Hivern Discs and his own self-titled label. He comes to the Cocktail party with two edits of Manos Tsangaris' powerful drum sermons - visceral percussive flurries from a man with enough rhythm to partake in the lauded Drums Off Chaos project. You should have a good idea from that what these two tracks are about - heavy, physical tracks for maximum dance induction, moments of pure abandon and the odd firework or two.

  5. Do U Feel Me? (D Tiffany remix) (6:29)
Review: Following a pleasingly intoxicating debut on NAFF earlier in the year, Maara-Louisa Dunbar transfers to Isla with an even more psychedelic and mind-mangling collection of cuts. We're particularly enjoying title track 'Potion Activated', where echoing bleeps and breathy, whispered vocals ride rolling techno drums and a delicious acid bassline, though the trance-inducing 'Miss Sweetie's Inferno' and trippy ambient techno number 'Dungeon Babes' are equally as potent. Those searching for breathless tribal techno thrills would be advised to check 'Do You Feel Me (featuring Nap)', which is subsequently pitched-up on D Tiffany's hectic and energetic remix.

  3. Trance Towers (7:06)
  4. Magnetic Latency (5:41)
Review: Following a two-year absence, Sense founder Morphing Territories has finally released the follow-up to his quietly impressive solo debut. Lucid Dreams. There's something pleasingly old-fashioned about title track 'Paper Brain', a snappy and mind-altering affair in which psychedelic TB-303 lines and metallic electronic motifs ride a jacking groove. 'Dicephalic Snake' is deeper, weirder and more sub-heavy, with trippy electronics riding a locked-in late-night beat, while 'Trance Towers' is a quirky, brain-melting take on psychedelic techno. To round things off, Morphing Territories doffs a cap to Snivilisation-era Orbital on the shuffling ambient techno treat that is 'Magnetic Latency'.

Review: Steve Rachmad is one of the Netherlands's most assured techno talents. He has a long discography and already assured legacy. For the next release on the rightly acclaimed Delsin Sterac series, he dives into his archives to unearth two timeless dub techno classics. Opener 'Helix' is perfectly smooth and serene, with frictionless drums and shimmering synth work braking back to prime era Detroit techno. 'Gnosis' picks up the pace, is a little more hurried, but still just as gorgeously sleek and soulful' This is the sound of someone speaking ably through their machines, and what a conversation it is.

Acid Dip (12")
Cat: REKIDS 189. Rel: 14 Oct 21
  1. Acid Dip (8:14)
  2. Armani (11:31)
Review: You always know what you are going to get from Radio Slave, and that is high functioning techno that never fails to make an impact in the club. The man behind the music, Matt Edwards, is one of techno's most enduring and consistent performers and he confirms that again here with the pair of bangers on his own Rekids label. 'Acid Dip' has punchy, funky drums that hammer home the groove with big, bouncy hits bring further dynamics as an occasional slaying synth sprays across the face of the tune. Devastating. 'Armani' is a brian-frying, loopy, synth-heavy workout full of texture.

Review: Vivod label boss Ali Renault pays tribute to his late friend Peter Mangalore of Human Shield on this moody new EP of twisted electronics. 'Northdown Acid' opens up in downbeat fashion, with glass Italo melodies and busted bass on a rugged groove. 'Imminent Salad' picks its head up to ride a chunky, organic house beat with glistening synths and 'Peter Summoning' is misty and pensive ambient interlude. 'Forbidden Mind' drags its heels to sombre effect, with splashes of cymbal and heavy finger clicks heightening the melancholy. 'Nawce Blizzard' rounds out the EP on a sense of hope and optimism.

  1. Pacific Paradise (4:34)
  2. I Can't (8:03)
  3. Dry Thoughts (7:14)
  4. Withoutyou (4:32)
Review: There's been a lot of discussion recently about "new age house", a decidedly tropical take on analogue deep house with distinct influences from classic ambient house and 1980s new age compositions. Here, Lobster Theremin follows in the footsteps of Mood Hut, Confused House and Future Times (amongst others) with a formidably atmospheric EP from Route 8 (AKA producer Gergely Szilveszter Horvath). Opener "Pacific Paradise" is particularly good, offering an enveloping plunge into ocean-deep waters (think dreamy chords and snappy drum machine rhythms). That said, the darker, fuzzier "I Can't" and "Dry Thoughts" - all bumpin' beats and subtle melodies - are just as good and demonstrate the Budapest-based producer's range.

  4. Fasid303 - "Lost Communications" (5:44)
Review: Brussels-based Analog Experience returns with a various artist EP titled Exospice Corp which features two tracks on the A side by Welsh legends Somatic Responses. Firstly the Healy Brothers unleash the breakneck acid techno stomper 'T2D2PtSlot3' followed by the more restrained yet undeniably seething futurism of "LV-426 Carrier" containing the same abnormally high levels of resonating 303 squelch. Over on the flip, label chief Lnt Mike appears with a heightened (that's putting it lightly!) sense of euphoria on the intense epic 'Soma Pills Experience' and FaSid303 (an alias of a bloke called Fabian) closes it out with one more blowout on the Roland boxes called 'Lost Communications'.
