Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

The Essential Seven B Collection
Eddie Bo & Inez Cheatham - "Lover & A Friend"
Roger & The Gypsies - "Pass The Hatchett"
Little Buck - "Little Boy Blue"
Lenny McDaniel & The New Era - "Something Out Of Nothing"
Pat Brown - "The Good Got To Suffer For The Bad"
Eddie Bo - "From This Day On"
Review: Blimey....not one single, not two but three 45's housed as a triple pack of essential re-issued releases from New Orleans label Seven B via the mighty Jazzman label. This package picks out possibly the rarest and best tracks from the label which traverses the genres of breakbeat funk, Northern Soul and original Rhythm n Blues flavour. One highlight for us here at Juno towers is the infectious "Something Out Of Nothing" from Lenny McDaniel & The New Era which starts off with a stompy organ and fierce brass section before a thumping bass and fat beat drums take over the proceedings. Elsewhere there's the amazing Roger & The Gypsies jam "Pass The Hatchett" which starts off with a growling bass, picked rhythm guitar before Roger drops those immortal lines.''Let Me Chop It.. Let Me Chop It'' over b-boy drums. Pure gold!

Cedric Im Brookes & Roland Nambo Robinson - "Let's Do Rock Steady" (3:19)
Cedric Im Brookes & Lloyd Brown - "Carry Go Bring Home" (2:45)
Review: This is a red hot 7" feature plenty of reggae gold that has never before been served up on this format. First up is a cover of a rocksteady classic from Alton Ellis. Roland "Nambo" Robinson is actually a trombonist but he provides the excellent vocals with driving rhythms from Mikey Lass Starr and a horn section that feature none other than Cedric Im Brooks. Flip it over and you will find a funky cover of Justin Hynes & The Dominos' ska gene 'Carry Go Bring Come.' It features Lloyd Brown on vocals with some fine drum work from Russ and it has never before been available on 7". Don't sleep.

Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:52)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:26)
Review: It might be getting cold and dark and wet here in the UK but music will always be able to transport us to warmer, sunnier, happier climes. And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:51)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:25)
Review: Discodelic obviously rates this latest 7" of theirs because they have released it in more than one format. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Two belters and this one looks as good as it sounds, too.

Ebony Evans - "Loving You Is All I Wanna Do" (4:38)
Lewzarius - "Step Up" (4:54)
Review: Ebony Evans is a superb soul talent who for this single worked with Manny Campbell who wrote and arranged. Originally recorded in 2004, 'Loving You Is All I Wanna Do' appeared on the Luv's Fire CD Maxi Single and later on a full album in 2006 through Coastal Records but now debut on vinyl thanks to Soul Direction. On the flip side, Lewzarius' 'Step Up" shines as a rich collaboration between Campbell and Haran Griffin, who is best known for 'Movin' Much Too Fast.' Atlanta-born Lewzarius recorded this track during his time at Coastal Records in the late 90s.

Review: If you're looking for some killer 7"s that offer two different soul sounds from some of the best to ever do it then you could do a lot worse than checking out all of the recent releases from Tower Vinyl out of Japan. This is number five in their Free Soul series and it pairs off some more legends. The Jackson Five kick off the A-side with 'It's Great To Be Here' which is a big energy soul jam with those characterful MJ vocals front and centre. Lexia's 'Good Morning To You' is a little more deep and emotionally stirring.

Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most aptly named labels in the game. Its latest releases have focused on The Last Poets with 'Tribute To Obabi' droopy on the same day as this one to kick off 2023 in style. As per that 45rpm, this one features a special 7" edit of a longer tune in 'Blessed Are Those Who Struggle'. It's laced with musings on oppression and slavery with funky drumming and speak-sung vocals making for a compelling mood. On the A-side is the Afro-jazz of ''It's A Trip' complete with unique vocal styles and funky basslines.

The Latin Souls - "Tiger Boo-Ga-Loo" (3:40)
Los Gatos Franceses - "Boo Goo Loo" (3:32)
Review: Spainish label Cuero digs deep into the archives to serve up some more Latin heat in the form of two vintage boogaloo cuts. They put together on this red hot double A-side 45 with fully remastered sound. The Latin Souls was made up of four Puerto Rican musicians who served up a-side 'Tiger Boo-ga-loo' in 1968. It's all sashaying beats, South American percussion, wooden hits and loose limbed beats. On the other side is the hard hitting, high speed hip dancer 'Boo-ga-loo' by Mexican crew Los Gatos Franceses, from all the way back in 1970.

All I Do (4:34)
Review: This excellent 7" single dips into the archives of flautist Hubert Laws, offering up two rarities that date from 1981. On side A you'll find a superb live version of Laws' then recent single 'Family', which first featured on the Japanese-only LP Aurex Jazz Festival: Super Fusion Jam. A languid jazz-funk number featuring Laws' younger sister Eloise on vocals and plenty of fluid solos from the man himself, it's argualy a better version than the one originally featured on the 1980 album of the same name. Over on the flip you'll find a previously unissued recording of Hu Eloise and the rest of their top-notch fusion band giving their interpretation of Stevie Wonder's 'All I Do'. It's as fresh, breezy and emotion rich as you'd expect, with Eloise Laws' delivering a brilliant lead vocal.

Review: Recorded and originally released in 1999, "The Bottle" has been released twice by Expansion on 12" single and now finally gets its first 7" issue. The song is the most classic Gil Scott Heron song, vocalist Maysa Leak (of British supergroup Incognito) is still the finest contemporary soul singer with a unique voice and all here with the magic of a full Incognito production. It is coupled with "Hooked On Your Love", both songs from the Incognito produced album All My Life'. Another fine rendition of this timeless anthem by one of the all time greats.

Madame Butterfly (4:18)
Review: Dynamite Cuts come back with a bang with four sublime cuts taken from the criminally short discography of funk soul troupe Leo's Sunshipp. The first half of their only album, we kick off with their cult solar celebration "Give Me The Sunshine" before "I'm Back For More" shreds through the stratosphere with a swooning Average White Band sparkle, "Get Down People" salutes with an Off The Wall style shine and shimmy before "Madame Butterfly" drifts back into the atmosphere with velvet falsetto harmonies and a groove so laid back it drips off the wax. Review: Two formerly passed-over bonus tracks from two of Lettuce's earlier records, 2008's Rage! and 2012's Fly respectively. The US collective and Berklee College graduates, seasoned stalwarts of funk and soul, first featured 'Monorail 3000' and 'Star Children' as afterthoughts on their otherwise sprawling third and fourth records, both funded by Velour Recordings. The tracks alternate between dextrose sweetness on the light-rail A and cosmic rocketship B-side, demonstrating the great versatility of these all-heart alumni.

Review: As the Mad About label hurtles towards release number 100 it looks to the talents of Webster Lewis and The Spirit of Atlanta for two more fiery gems on a very useful 7". There are hints of Library music in the noodling melodies of the A-side jam 'El Bobo'. It has jazz-funk keys and organic drum rhythms gently tumbling below the Rhodes magic up top. The Spirit Of Atlanta's 'Freddie's Alive & Well' then picks up the pace with a more high-speed and 60s-influenced jazz-funk sound featuring some buttery smooth vocals up top. Two effective jams for sure.

Review: Occasionally a single comes along that shows off a contemporary group's samplework. 'Hustler's Convention' from Dynamite Cuts is one. This new 7" recalls funk supergroup Lightnin Rod's album of the same name - originally released in 1973, it is renowned for being one of the major influences on hip-hop, bringing a sociopolitical commentary to black music at the time. Here the original track 'Sport', named after one of the album's protagonist hustlers, is blended with the B-side 'Four Bitches Is What I Got', which builds a smoke-filled narrative story involving poker tables and underworld czars around the funk backing.

Four Bitches Is What I Got (3:48)
Review: While Last Poets are rightly regarded as the 'godfathers of rap', others would insist that Hustlers Convention - a 1973 solo album from member Jalal Nuriddin under the Lightnin' Rod alias - had more influence on the birth of hip-hop. In part, that's down to the funk backing he received on the album from his chosen backing bands, which included the mighty Kool & The Gang. Here, Dynamite Cuts prove the point by offering two killer cuts from the set on 7" for the very first time. A-side 'Sport' is a Blaxploitation style delight - all ear-catching horn motifs, shuffling funk breaks, weighty bass, wah-wah guitar and languid spoken word vocals - while 'Four Bitches Is What I Got' sees our hero make merry over a more stripped-back take on the same backing track.

Review: Last year Rocafort Records delivered a rather good retrospective of the early works of Peruvian band-leader Alfredito Linares, an unheralded star of Latin jazz and later salsa and boogaloo who made some seriously good music in the late 1960s and '70s. This sequel, which features six scintillating tracks stretched across three seven-inch singles, tells the next chapter of the story, following Linares' relocation to Cali, Colombia in the early '70s. What's an offer is a heavy, club-ready mixture of righteous boogaloo - all infectious grooves, loose-limbed South American percussion, breathless group vocals and rising, big band style horns - and breezy salsa workouts, all of which hits the spot and then some.

Review: Having previously compiled two boxsets of dusty, sought-after "Nuyorican" boogaloo and salsa jams, Rocafort Records has decided to continue on a similar tip via a triple seven-inch set focusing on the early works of Peruvian artist Alfredito Linares. The set mines his first two albums, El Pito Y Otros Exitos (1968) and Yo Traigo Boogaloo (1969), delivering horn-heavy, percussion-rich, piano-sporting boogaloo and salsa treats. Our picks include superb opener 'Cool', the expansive vibraphone solos and "party atmos" style spoken word vocals of 'Tutu Tata' and the downlow brilliance of closing cut 'Sin Tu Querer'. Review: Discodelic is starting a series dedicated to the music of Panama and they kick off with Los Criollos and a fully authorised reissue of their 'Pa' los Panas de San Francisco.' The band might not be as well known as they should and that's down to the fact they recorded only two tunes with this orchestra in the mid-seventies and disappeared forever. Which is a shame, because as this 7" proves - it also comes on coloured vinyl - they had a red hot and infectious sound full of big horns, percussive liveliness and fiery vocals.

It is believed they were recorded in 1970 and the band themselves have given over the original tapes for the remaster job done for this EP. A thunderous version of The Ides Of March's 'Vehicle' occupies the a-side of our album and shows the unbeatable power of the band's horn section with Mario Rodes doing wonders with his voice. Review: Mexico city label Discodelic shares the first edition in their Eclipse series and sublabel, which focuses on obscure and undocumented or under-documented Mexican groups. On the first of two new 45s, the label focus on Los Sabios and Los Eliceos, two obscure monster Latin funk psych groups who recorded in the mid 1970s. Packed with a wowwing lead guitar focus and a vintage psychedelic baste, Los Sabios' 'Trip To The Moon' takes its name from the first ever sci-fi film, and aptly lays back while playing through a distinctive Latin pulse and swarthy funk dust-cloud. Eliceos' 'La Cabana', meanwhile, teleports us right on down to the poolside beach hut, as a chuffing electric organ line buzzes atop a bustling drummed undercurrent.

Review: Mary Love didn’t quite reach the acclaim of her soul-funk peers like Betty Wright, but she laid down a breadcrumb trail of essential tracks across her career on classic labels like T.K. Disco. ‘More Love (And Then Some)’ was a hidden treasure recorded by George Semper with Love’s 12-year-old daughter Robbie and the mighty Fontella Bass on backing vocals which lay in wait in his archives until it was unearthed for a compilation in 1997. Since then the track has snuck out into the wider consciousness, but it’s never had the proper airing such a monster track deserves until this much-needed reissue on Record Shack.

Somebody (2:45)
Review: African American funk and soul group The Lowdown Band was made up of musicians from both the East and West coasts of the US. They rose to prominence in the 1980s across California and took inspiration from the proceeding decade's funk and soul. Their basslines were always groovy and their drums tight with plenty of catchy melodies and soaring horns. 'Music Is The Answer' was their biggest hit and it came in 1982 with the soulful vocals of lead singer Raul Gallegos. It claimed tot he top 20 of the US charts at the time and is a gorgeous cut to this day. Here it is reissued with another of their big ones, 'Somebody.'

Review: Dynamite Cuts continue doing good justice to the label's obsession with Jon Lucien, the soul and funk crooner who eluded overt popularity but refused to let that crimp his style. Four of his most timeless classics here get the reissue treatment, and are compiled into one EP, traversing the lengthy ranges of b-boy breaks ('A Sunny Day'), percussive soca ('Ghetto Song'), post-highlife prayers ('Listen Love'), and everything in between.
