Shouts 2021 Sampler Vol 1
Cat: RS 044. Rel: 26 Oct 21
Liluzu - "Nano" (5:11)
Mafou - "Warda" (5:12)
Nidia - "Celebration" (3:37)
Yushh - "3.15" (5:05)
Dylan Bryne - "Cherenkov Blue" (4:54)
Klein Sage - "The Sayers" (5:04)
Review: Rhythm Section International is one of the scene's most influential and therefore respected labels. Its Shouts 2021 compilation has already got plenty of plaudits and for good reason. It is a diverse selection from sure to be star names such as Liluzu who opens with the slow and snaking house of 'Nano.' Elsewhere Nidia brings a richly melodic perspective to some loose broken beats on 'Celebration' and Klein Sage's 'The Sayers' is a superbly vibes, stripped back bit of jazzy basement house with finger clicks to die for and a great monologue that pokes fun at plenty.

Supalatino Vol 1: The Funky Sound Of Latin America EP
Marcia Maria - "Meu Amigo Branco"
Ray Barretto - "Pastime Paradise"
Eddie Palmieri - "Spirit Of Love"
Paulinho Da Costa - "Love 'Til The End Of Time"
Yambu - "Sunny"
Review: From the creative, crate-digging minds of the Supafrico imprint, Supalatino digs deep into rich annals of South American disco and funk to present five previously rare-as-hen's-teeth floor fillers. Highlights include Ray Barretto's extended cover of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise", Marcia Maria's seductive, off-beat vocal delivery on "Meu Amigo Branco" and the soul jazz fusion of "Sunny", a track that's gave the house scene a very well-known brass sample. Heavenly.

Bob Musella - "Baby Hot Stuff" (5:33)
Ysheso, Ralo - "Right On Ponce" (5:02)
Ghosts Of Venice - "Disco Nouveau" (5:21)
Sebastian Badi, Nico Cortazzo - "You Know What I Want" (6:00)
Monsieur Van Pratt, BROLORIZO - "Ticket 2 Ride" (extended mix) (5:17)
Monsieur Van Pratt, BROLORIZO - "Ticket 2 Ride" (Derrick McKenzie mix) (7:35)
Review: Happiest of birthdays to Super Spicy who celebrate half a decade in the game with an EP of irresistible tunes. Phunque kicks the party off with an old school vibe that pairs a superb male vocal with crisp, effective drums. Bob Musella brings sample magic on 'Baby Hot Stuff' and Ysheso, Ralo keep the disco-tinged house feels flowing with a percussive monster. After the smoother sounds of Ghosts Of Venice, the flip side brings a trio of funked-up and guitar-laced house grooves that take it back to the glory days of New York.

African Leaders
Cat: MESS 002. Rel: 05 Feb 24
Yoanson & Karamie - "African Leaders" (5:23)
Prof Jah Pinpin 4tet - "The Final Bird (Le Temps D'une Vie)" (3:18)
Review: There is scant little information out there about Yoanson & Karamie. What we do know is that they were young artists from the French African diaspora who met with Nessim Saroussi and his label Ness Music in the late 80s and were encouraged to record the music presented here. It is their only official EP and it is a brilliant mix of Afro-tropical percussions, disco, electro and vocals that call to mind the likes of Arthur Russell. Philippe de Lacroix-Herpin is the man festered here as Prof Jah Pinpin and he brings some of his signature saxophone brilliance to flipside jaunt 'The Final Bird (Le Temps D'une Vie)'.

Jungle
Jungle (7")
Cat: ES 054. Rel: 05 Jul 16
Jungle (3:27)
That's The Way It Is (3:20)
Review: "Jungle" is the second batch of Numero-reissued gems by The Young Senators from the '60s; actually, we should really say that these are released for the first time ever. The song is a no nonsense Detroit slinger with one of the best breakdowns we've heard on the label. "That's The Way It Is" is a softer tune, a delicate 60's pop song guided by organs, horns and prophetic vocals. Bang tidy.

Ringing Bell (Sweet Music)
Cat: ES 055. Rel: 05 Jul 16
Ringing Bells (Sweet Music) (part 1) (2:52)
Ringing Bells (Sweet Music) (part 2) (2:56)
Review: The Young Senators released two EP's back in 1976: one called Boogie Time, and another called Ride The Tide. The sound was laid-back, sleazy and full of that boogie slack, but another single of there's called "Ringing Bells" was never released... until now, that is, and courtesy of the unstoppable Numero Group. "Ringing Bells (Sweet Music)" is a classic Detroit soul banger, deep and spacious but fast-paced and built for the dance. "Ringing Bells (Sweet Music) Part 2" is where things really start to get hypnotic - the song is a percussive, psyched-out continuation of the original, and it's one of the best soul B-sides we've heard in a while. Warmly recommended.

What Do You See In Her
Cat: SJR 1857. Rel: 15 Jul 22
What Do You See In Her? (3:02)
I Remember The Summer (3:15)
Review: Inell Young's What Do You See In Her is often said to be one of the most powerful soul songs to have ever come from the great New Orleans scene. Eddie Bo is of course the great man behind it - as he was so many of these great tunes from this place and this ear - with the voice of Inell adding the spice. Finding an original is hard as, and will also cost you very close to four figures, so snap this one up while you can. Both sides are pure gold.

Beautiful Bamboo Flute

Sado Okesa (3:54)
Tairyo Utaikomi (3:16)
Soma Bon Uta (2:56)
Komoro Mago Uta (2:58)
Nanbu Ushio Uta (3:44)
Itsuki No Komori Uta (4:35)
Hietsuki Bushi (4:06)
Yasuki Bushi (3:36)
Yosakoi Bushi (4:06)
Kuroda Bushi (4:24)
Review: In 2002, the Japanese government recognized bamboo flute maestro Hozan Yamamoto as a "living national treasure". It was in honor of his lengthy career in music, and in particular the way he championed a traditional Japanese instrument even when he was turning his hand to Western music. "Beautiful Bamboo Flute", an album first released in 1971 and almost impossible to find since, is a superb example of this. It sees him deliver haunting, emotional and life-affirming solos over funky jazz, big band and fusion backing tracks that tend towards the fresh and funky. It's an unusual blend, but also an invigorating and exciting one.

Wamono Groove: Shakuhachi & Koto Jazz Funk '76
Cat: 180GWALP 04. Rel: 27 Jan 22
Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Nanbu Ushioi-Uta" (4:52)

Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Hohai-Bushi" (3:38)

Toshiko Yonekawa - "Saitaro-Bushi" (3:39)
Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Soma Nagareyama" (4:23)
Toshiko Yonekawa - "Yagi-Bushi" (2:49)
Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Asadoya Yunta" (3:47)
Toshiko Yonekawa - "Konpira Fune Fune" (3:21)
Review: Unlike previous instalments in the 180g label's Wamono series, this isn't a compilation in the strictest sense of the term, but rather a retrospective. It showcases a range of killer jazz-funk and rare groove tunes recorded at Nippon Columbia studios in the mid 1970s by arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakahuchi master Kifu Mitsuhashi. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the mellow, slow-burn lusciousness of 'Nanbu Ushioi-Uta' and the up-beat, guitar solo-laden brilliance of 'Hohai-Bushi', to the all-time Japanese jazz-funk classic that is 'Saitaro-Bushi' and the solo-laden brilliance of 'Asadoya Yunti', whose dazzling Fender Rhodes solos are reminiscent of the early '70s work of the late, great Billy Preston.

Review: Thai funk greatness wafts over to the Netherlands from South-East Asia, as we revel in this new, second album from Yin Yin - 'The Age Of Aquarius'. An 8-tracker of gilded and groovy proportions, it's paramount to keep in mind the deft fusion of electronics and acoustics on this album. Also informing on the project are the band's experiences on the road, where the band felt an unexplainable, psychic interplay between their fans' reactions to their performances, and their ability to create even more music.

Joao Donato - "Liaisons" (Dibiase remix) (6:03)
Azymuth - "Rendor Do Samba" (DJ Spinna remix) (5:28)
Review: The popular Jazz Is Dead series has put out a wealth of killer tunes headed up by Adrian Younge and now a bunch of them get revisited for this special remix album. It reads like a who's who of contemporary jazz players and opens with none other than broken beat maestro Kadi Tatham. His take on Marcos Valle's 'Gotta Love Again' is a real joy, while there are low fi beat delights from Pink Sifu, chopped up sounds from Cut Chemist and a gloriously sunny and upbeat version of Doug Carn's 'Windfall' by Natureboy Flako who produced Fatima's excellent last album.
