Cong Burn 03
Cong Burn 03 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 03. Rel: 16 Jul 18

Techno
Chekov - "Spring" (5:34)
Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

Anthony Child - "Unconscious Fearless Determination" (5:53)
Duckett - "Breaks My Heart When I Remember That Day" (6:19)
Steevio - "Pendulum" (6:25)
Tom Ellis - "As A Take" (7:00)
Review: The Welsh purveyors of quality electronic grooves known lovingly as Freero are not just content curating one of the world's best festivals dedicated to exceptional music so they started a label. Their third edition of Freerotation Records presents the legendary Anthony Child aka Surgeon with "Unconscious Fearless Determination", certainly a departure from what we're used to but enthralling as always on this esoteric and slow burning exercise in hypnotism. UntilMyHeartStops mainman Duckett presents yet another exercise in utterly sublime deepness on "Breaks My Heart When I Remember That Day"; it doesn't get any more bittersweet and emotive than this. On the flip, label head honcho Steevio serves up some pure form modular techno with "Pendulum" which really captures those ghosts in the machine, while other core member Tom Ellis delivers the dreamy and immersive ambient house of "As A Take".

Whole Night Long
Gathering Wisdom
Review: Tom & Duckett live in north Wales in the UK. They have been producing their blend of deep techno from an early age and although Tom is only 23 years old, it's immediately apparent where their musical mindset is. They are great advocates of live analogue music and you can hear a wealth of knowledge, both musically and production wise, in these tracks. The title track 'climate flu' is a beautiful melodic structure that stays with you, rapped around subtle swung percussion and contra melody that, although deep, still maintains enough intensity to hold a dancefloor.

Unneccesary Cosmetics EP

Unneccesary Cosmetics
Sumtimes
24th Avenue
Review: Tom Demac & Duckett from Wales in the UK worked hard at providing us incredibly deep and swinging groovy materials. Best know for their release on Electronic Audio, the Tom Demac owned imprint, the duo present here some darker tinted than usual materials. Swing and shuffle is a defacto ingredient in Tom & Duckett's dance alchemy and we just ask for more! "Unnecessary Cosmetics" rattles and shakes as it should, a deep tech house monster that appeals to straight dancing for sure. Tiny details, percussive shots that definitely have this human touch and finally that freaky clubby bassline that hit you're head for good. Brilliant! "Sumtimes" has weird pads, shuffled to heaven percussion sounds straight out of Mars, rattling & shaking minimalism. Subtly added arrangements, very clever dosage of darkness dancefloor action. "Sumtimes" is contemporary modern minimalism. "24th Avenue" is a darker deep minimal exploration here, full of underground sound actions and experiments. All never loosing the obvious goal of getting you on the floor. Tiny and effected to death vocals that add to the duo's bizarre twistery. Again a deep minimal track full of what we're after, groove and experimentation!

Who Am I (3:49)
Review: Berceuse Heroique never ceases to disappoint when it comes to a bit of comic relief. That sounds strange for a label which specialises in uncompromising outsider sounds, of all shapes and sizes, and predictably dark shades of music, but there is a surprise at every turn. Now, the Athens-based imprint makes a turn to Duckett, a relatively unsung figure of the early minimal and tech-house scene from the UK. Emperor's New Clothes Part 1 is a varied dance single with six effective cuts riding shotgun; the bounce begins with the trippy bleeps of "Rights", followed by the more broken, off-kilter noise approach of "The Way You Make Me Feel" and the sleepy minimalism of "Tension". The B-Side is similarly hedonistic, with all sorts of chanting making way for yet more tooled-up beats and wayward samples.

There's Things About You That I Would Never Tell You (4:51)
Half Remembered Days (4:47)
Review: Although primarily known for mining techno in all its forms, Freerotation resident Duckett has shown great versatility through his recording career. That versatility comes to the fore on Feeding Paper Tigers, which could well be the producer's single strongest EP to date. It contains a string of ear-catching highlights, from the shimmering IDM melodiousness of "Simulation" and deep house-meets-post dubstep warmth of "There's Things About You That I Would Never Tell You", to the wonky and mind altering drum machine rhythms of "Half Remembered Days" and sparse-but-funky "Outsider". Opener "Living With The YPJ On Venus", a kind of deep, post-dubstep/broken house fusion layered in techno style bleeps and fluid jazz-funk electric piano solos.

No Relation To Me (7:20)
My Other Life On Earth Begins This Morning (6:54)
Everything Works Backwards (6:39)
But My Mind (5:38)
Review: Having delivered a stand out pair of EPs to Untilmyheartstops last year and moonlighted on Greta Cottage Workshop, Freerotation alumni Duckett lands on the ever adventurous Galdoors with a spellbinding collection of compositions that seek to send delicate synthesiser sequences into romantic, cosmic pastures. "No Relation To Me" shimmers with intricate layers of melody while "My Other Life On Earth Begins This Morning" works around off-kilter rhythmic configurations to create a hypnotic workout. The subtlety carries through to the B-side, where "Everything Works Backwards" pulls at the heartstrings before "But My Mind" settles into a woozy, uneasy funk.

Ewloe Drive (8:04)
Cobwebs and Waiters (6:06)
Nervous in Regard to Waking Up (5:29)
Are Things OK At Home (7:55)
Review: Welsh purveyors of deep and mysterious subterranean grooves UntilMyHeartStops return with a lovely second release by Duckett. He keeps on with the consistent quality and aesthetic that these label has become renowned for. The sombre, tripped out repetition of the groove to "Ewlowe Drive" is quite original "Cobwebs And Waiters" meanders about with its rolling bass, broken beat and lush Rhodes piano and mysterious bells jangling away subtlety in the background. On the flip; "Nervous In Regard To Waking Up" gets more on the techno tip with its razor sharp arpeggio and haunting pads and "Are Things OK At Home" almost like a version of "Cobwebs and Waiters" again but more upbeat with its bleeps and shuffling rhythm. Tip!

Crappop (5:40)
Blackbody Radiation (6:14)
Valentines Day Is For Animals (6:12)
Naked And Fearless (5:11)
Track 3 (2:28)
Review: The latest release from Untilmyheartstops sees the label turn to an individual they know all too well in Duckett, a fellow resident at the excellent UK festival Freerotation. As the title suggests, Part 1 (Coffee, Women and Skits) is the first of two releases due on Untilmyheartstops from Duckett and backs up his status as an unsung hero of the Welsh scene. All four tracks nestle snugly in the brand of deep house this label has cultivated, yet Duckett still covers quite a lot of different ground stylistically. From the Borft style guttural throb and shuffle of opening track "Crappop", Duckett veers off into more cerebral, introspective territory on the delightfully fuzzy "Blackbody Radiation" whilst "Valentines Day Is For Animals" is a shimmering highlight.
