Dbridge & Instra:Mental - "Detroid"
Review: Autonomic unleash two fierce collaborative drum & bass tracks on "Acacia Avenue". The title track is D'Bridge, Instramental and Skream all working together on a synth flip out that layers over deep, murmuring sub bass. "Detroid" is D'Bridge and Instramental nurturing a real monster out OF a baron sound field.

Pacific Heights (5:46)
Sakura (6:18)
Photograph (5:45)
End Credits (6:02)
Review: Eight years after their ground-breaking "Resolution 653" full length, pioneering duo Instra:mental make a welcome return with their new album Timelines, and this first selection of tunes from it gives you a good idea why. "Pacific Heights" is a jumble of minimal drum beats and futuristic synth smears that is atmospheric, while "Sakura" is more sparse and zoned out thanks to forlorn chords which speak of romantic pain. Things slow down into deep rubbery rhythms on the lush "Photograph" while "End Credits" has an unexpected Balearic vibe to it, with breezy chords making for a mood that feels akin to gazing out to sea.

Memory Implant
Review: Alex Green and Damon Kirkham's debut album has been a long time coming. It follows an action-packed decade that's seen them morph from drum & bass punishers to dubstep fusionists and, more recently, bass music experimentalists. With such experience behind them, it's perhaps no surprise that Resolution 653 is an eclectic set. What's more surprising is the expansiveness of their approach. Within the album's 13 tracks lies glass-clear electronic futurism, brain-warping acid tracks, murky dusbtep, slo-mo 4/4 sweetness, hard edged electro bounce, off-kilter IDM and, naturally, 140 BPM bass bangers. As a summary of where British bass music's at in 2011, it's unsurpassed.

When I Dip
Review: Nonplus allow us a peek at what the forthcoming Instra:mental album will sound like and on the evidence of these two tracks it's going to be quite rowdy indeed! "Thomp" was perhaps named in honour of the sensation that hits you as soon as the truly evil juke rhythm finds its place amidst the bass heavy industrial mist. Embellished by loose rackets of percussion, "Thomp" is a thrilling example of how Instra:mental are always looking to flip the sonic script. The flipside presents 'When I Dip", a trip into the swift retro electro territory Addison Groove recently explored on Swamp 81, with a brilliant vocal sample battling it out with rough futurist vibes over crisp 808 rhythms.

Let's Talk
Vicodin
Review: Naked Lunch unleash two effortlessly cool, idiosyncratic productions from Instra:mental. "Let's Talk" is an ocean deep, slow burning crossover between house and dubstep. It utilises the warm, clicky tone of the constant kick drum that penetrates the atmospheric soundscape of background chime and tension building static. Echoed melody snatches and pulsing synthesized bass stabs create an ominous sense of foreboding that is heightened by the somewhat unsettling, down-pitched vocals. On the flip, "Vicodin" picks up the tempo as the duo indulge their dubstep palette once more. Keeping their futurist sentiments in hand, they keep the sound unique and fresh with some intricate percussion and beatless structure. Wrapped around thumping sub bass and Detroit styled piano chords, this is an atmospheric stepper that moves with a fluid arrangement for the deepest part of the night.

D Bridge - "From The Start"
Instra:Mental - "Detuned Heart"
Review: Hats off to Instra:mental and D-Bridge. So far, their Autonomic label has offered up a fresh new take on drum and bass and dubstep, utilising downtempo, pop and experimental elements to stunning effect. This two-tracker, featuring a cut each from the label head honchos, is just as surprising and enthralling as any of Autonomic's previous releases. Instra:mental's "From The Start" doesn't really sound like dubstep or drum and bass. It has a sparse rhythmic pulse all of its own, alongside electronic melodies that sound like Broadcast at their ethereal best. D-Bridge's "Detuned Heart" moves even further towards vintage Warp territory, coming on like early Autechre or Aphex Twin circa Selected Ambient Works.

Instra:mental - "Scene 3"
Mode - "Stepping Stones"
Review: Exit Records drop a second tantalising Mosaic Vol 1 ten inch sampler ahead of the main course which is set top drop at the end of the month. Instra:mental plough deep into the bowels of downtempo machine funk drum and bass experimentalism on "Scene 3", with a decidedly neon tinged synth hook swirling around the spaces between cascading industrial percussion and spurts of sci fi bass menace. On the flip, Mode works at a similar tempo on "Stepping Stones" with the barbed electronic pulses and intermittent bursts of sub bass dynamics that ride the half step stutter, offset by pads rich with ethereal detail. Big tip!
