Review: Underground techno veteran Johannes Volk's impressive discography has seen him release on Jeff Mills' Axis and 6277 imprints, in addition to labels as diverse as Dolly, Token and Cocoon in addition to his own operation - Exploration. Volk can now add Running Back to his list of credible affiliations, where he incorporates all of his influences from the glory days of Frankfurt's legendary techno scene in the '90s on the Extra Dimensions LP. From the Giorgio Moroder-style homage of the electrifying title track, the Motor City also receives a respectful salute in the form of the Reese-driven dancefloor drama of 'Reload Love' and the funky techno workout of 'An Old Android On A Broken Piano', while the neon-lit "Rainbow Rockets" channels the spirit of Paisley Park.

Review: German producer Johannes Volk runs the Lifeworld and Exploration imprints. On this new EP for Belgian techno imprint Token, he firmly wears his old school influences on his sleeve. This EP being a dedication to sorts to the hypnotic polyrhythms from the late nineties and early noughties. "Designing Evolution" creates some basic trance induction with its complex layers of steel drums, bongos and syncopated 909 hats all working in wonderful unison like early James Ruskin. The bleepy bell tones and sonar qualities of "Escapism" create wonderful style of suspense over a furious warehouse groove. On the flip "Cosmic Clockwork" is the EPs true standout which is reminiscent of Jeff Mills and Oliver Ho's finest moments on Purpose Maker or Meta respectively.

Review: Exploration label head, Giessen's Johannes Volk, has previously appeared on Jeff Mills' 6277, Sistrum and more recently on Zadig's Construct Re-form. Now he steps up on Steffi's Dolly imprint for some soulful and synth driven techno that proudly wears its second wave Detroit influence on its shoulder. "Hydro Funk" has a razor sharp bassline and euphoric strings facing off against syncopated drum machine shuffle. Yeah, he knows how to emulate the Motor City sound, that's a given! The sublime high tech soul of "Shadow Selection" channels the heyday of early nineties Detroit Techno, taking you back the good old days of Metroplex, UR or Strobe. 313 dub techno genius Luke Hess gets on with remix duties on the flip for "Shadow Selection" delivering a more powerful and cyclical remix for those peak time moments.

Review: Since launching his own Exploration imprint, Johannes Volk's output has hit a confident stride which allows him to continue extolling the virtues of creative, imaginative techno in the classic sense of the word. With the colourful flair of earliest Detroit, "Submarine Funk" makes this point the clearest, but certainly there are rich melodies and weighty rhythms to be enjoyed across all three tracks. "Aquanautic Tales" is a more stripped and brooding slow burner, while "Newborn" glides on a thick bed of synth, but it's the last track that brings all the elements together for a sci-fi jam that Juan Atkins would be proud of.
